FL Studio is my jam. I've been using it since version 3 about 2001. I have used other DAWs such as Pro Tools, Reaper, Ableton and others. Ableton is the only other DAW that seemed to come naturally after using FL for the majority of my work. I love the concept you present of the shinning metal. Thanks for everything you share sir.

If only there were a fuckton of official how-to videos and a comprehensive manual covering everything hmm.. :D I used to do the same thinking i will know things just because i have used something similar in the past. But whenever i utilized manuals and how-tos I have saved a lot of time and energy! All the best

agreed! i’ve been using FL since 2009, and it’s sometimes hard to remember that we all approach everything in our own way.
Drop me in Cubase and I won’t remember my own name! But it’s weird to realize that not everyone works the way you do…it boggles my mind when FL confuses others, but it’s because it’s my native tongue :)
My most recent armor test has been working on this album for a client who needed professional-sounding filmscore-y outros, and god that pushed me to the brink of hating the whole project. But we made it, and the label listen through went amazing and everyone’s happy.
Sometimes you gotta test yourself hard, whether it’s figuring out FL or writing a totally new style that you’re totally unfamiliar with.

Venus Theory's demo video was really promising for me. I have FL Studio but I am using another DAW for scoring. I once used FL studio for scoring but there aren't many resources to help me make it work for scoring. I hope FL Studio continues to makes it more freindly for film composers. I'm gonna switch back to FL if it does.

FL Studio has been my DAW for many years (since FL Studio 4) and really only for 2 reasons: 1) I had "acquired" a copy of Fruity Loops 3 in high school (which was already starting to implement some DAW features) and had gotten pretty good at it, and 2) when I got my first paying gig, I got nervous about using "acquired" software. FL Studio had just come out and was offering lifetime upgrades for the reasonable price of $150.00. I've never looked back. I recently downloaded a licensed copy FL Studio 21 without shelling out a cent. Now that is bang for your buck.
I love the humility. I went from Pro Tools to REAPER many years ago. I still feel that I don't know what the fuck I am doing but at the end of the day, I, like you, am creating something. Thanks for all of your efforts. They are appreciated and recognized. Thanks!

I used Ableton for years as my daily driver, and spent many months using Reaper as well. Lately, I have gravitated to FL Studio---which I have used off an on for about 2 decades but never dug incredibly deep. In the past few months, I have dug deep and am truly amazed with the depth and the power of the DAW. Totally unconventional with lots of hidden gems. Gol, its primary architect, is a genius.
Reaper, Ableton. FL Studio....tells a persons ability of musicality without really telling us
Yup, i used ableton and fl, and while ableton is pretty cool, i feel like you can do more stuff more easily in fl studio. A lot of "hidden" features that are super convenient
Also the zgame visualiser is a huge bonus
@@Pabloesc571 Childrens toys. I use Cubase along with Native Instruments and Dorica....that is what REAL MUSICIANS. FL Studio and Ableton are GREAT TOOLS because it allows non-musicians to make music

fl is very convenient there at the top all the icons are available and when pressed they give you work with what you need.and the most significant plus is that a piano roll and a VECTOR-TYPE playlist, that is, they can be made to the full screen and work with the editing of notes!!!But you're professors.....Here there is a genesis synthesizer of the 1st version, because as you know, its second version has recently been released, this is a synth that no one likes, and I used it to create a cool track in a couple of hours that recorded it in 2018.I really like his chorus and delay effects section very much!but there is not a big problem that it works perfectly only in the 32-bit version, but for me it's almost an obstacle, I love this complex and incomprehensible vst synth!!!people are very boring and they can't do anything from a small synth, but I can squeeze out the maximum using even the pitch of the notes, you can get a completely unusual sound.but today is the age of professors and you are all smart here

I've used FL Studio for about a decade now. There was a time, about 5 or 6 years into using it, where I thought I had reached a standstill. I assumed I had maxed out the DAWs potential, and I became frustrated with how it felt my music wasn't constantly improving like it initially was in those early years. I tried some other DAWs, like Ableton, but I never felt that comfortable with them. In the end, I abandoned my old music project out of this frustration.
Those were dark times; I lost my creative outlet, and in turn, I felt like I also became lost without it. Late into 2021, around Christmas time, I got really high one day and was doing my favorite thing that I like doing when I'm high, which was listening to music. At the time I was really getting into noise and experimental music (Merzbow, Prurient, Sissy Spacek, etc.), and it gave me an epiphany: what if I got back into FL and just threw out all of my preconceived theory and techniques and patterns and just experimented with it? What if I just went all out, like creating a purely abstract painting of random colors, shapes and textures, trying to make something cohesive out of chaos? What if I just... played with it? After all, it started off just being a fun thing to mess with when I was a teenager. Why not try to revisit that mindset?
What ended up happening was something truly extraordinary. I managed to create sounds I had never heard before. I was creating things I had no idea I could even make. Just like that, I was officially back at it. That creative outlet I once threw away had been fully restored and completely reimagined.
I'm fully convinced at this point that there's nothing you can't make using FL. It's not about the DAW you choose, it's about how you choose to use it. Kind of like how they say the best programming language is the one you're most comfortable with, I feel like that can be applied to DAWs as well.
It's encouraging and validating when I see someone I look to for instruction and inspiration go through the same struggles I do. The honesty and vulnerability of this video is beyond appreciated.

Due to circumstances in my life, I quit making music back in 2010 and eventually lost the use of FL Studio as I was using an associate's copy to make music up until that point. I've only just managed to finally get a copy for myself and am finally returning to it after 13 years. Even for something that was second nature to me back then, it's... quite challenging now. That challenge and unfamiliarity was manifesting as an overwhelming sense of anxiety on the first day or two. On day 3, things just started to connect. Frustration and anxiety became curiosity and excitement, and then finally genuine purpose and an eagerness to improve. I really wish I had come across this video sooner because this comment will likely be lost in the shuffle, but still. Great video, dude! Thanks so much for sharing this one.
I'm so sorry you went through that frustration and pain, but THANK YOU for posting this. It truly does help to see (not only know, but see) that even people as talented and skilled as yourself face the same issues and hardships the rest of us face. I'm not yet in my dream job of making sounds/music, but even with a completely different background, I find your videos to be immensely helpful and inspirational. I wish you the best and I sincerely hope you keep making these types of videos. Your music is amazing and these videos are equally amazing.

Smirk aside, your channel has been a big inspiration and endless library of information on my music journey. Thanks to you for most part on finding and learning gems like PaulXStretch, Vital and Surge XT. I also really like the philosophical aspect you have on your channel to what's/why's and how's of creation. FL studio was indeed my first DAW long time ago.. now on Reaper, talking about the learning curve. Keep them great videos coming VT.
I am also trying to learn Reaper. I had not touched a music instrument in over 15 years. I used to play drums and guitar with a couple of local bands that basically just played the local bars and what not, until the heroin addiction got me. I'm 44 now, and finally have a small collection of instruments to start recording some music. If your serious about using Reaper, I highly recommend checking out Kenny from the YT channel "Reaper Mania". He has content ranging all the way from complete noob to advanced power user, his stuff has helped me immensely.
I think it's rad that you went out of your comfort zone! I really appreciate your videos and your goal of encouraging people to create - thanks! I personally love getting dropped in the middle of something that I know very little about and figuring things out along the way.
I just recently went back to FL Studio after almost a decade of ignoring it simply because I started on it. I’m actually back on pretty much full time. Once I got over the “make unique” thing for midi clips, I realized how powerful and streamlined it does things compared to other DAW’s.

FL Sudio was created and market for people with ni musical talent to make them feel they are making music..specificvally for EDM and hip hop...its not offensive to say that..Ive been using DAWS since their early inception..and I used Frutiy Looks (now FL Studio ) when it came out in 1997..
Composer arrangers and REAL musicians do not use Fl Studio or Ableton because they are too limited music wise...nothing for YOU to get emotional about..there is just a difference

You CLEARLY continue to create some of the best music creation related videos anywhere on the 'net, but I must admit that I am interested in the emotional/psychological impact that this journey has had on your life and your willingness to share it and talk about it, because invariably I find myself sharing your pain in my own endeavors. This isn't easy, making music and sharing it with the world or creating it on demand for clients who know f***-all about music production, but I cannot imagine making my living any other way (other than my fine art paintings).

@@richardridings7511 No, but I'll give it a listen. I'm pretty good at finishing music. Tomorrow (Monday 2-13-23) I turn in the music for my tenth album since 2010, to my label. More is better, though (as long as the quality remains).

Aphorisms are helpful if they are not turned against ourselves. Pushing is good. Self abuse is not. I really liked the steps you outlined for the project. FLS is a great DAW for in the box and all around great sample-workbench. The shortcuts are obscure and powerful - so certainly frustrating. I still prefer Cubase for working with outboard gear, but still use FLS for idea & loop generation. Thanks for more inspiration.
This is the program I use for my tracks, so yeah, I feel your pain. The first time I started using was so frustrating that I wanted to toss my computer overboard, but then as🤗 Keep using it, You will succeed in the end. And this is coming from an inexperienced music producer, by the way.

As someone with a hard drive of ideas and very little finished projects, this is inspiring me to just sit down and dedicate a day to building something.
I work in the creative fields as a photographer and animator and can complete projects for clients and things I dream up in those arenas, no problem. Music is a whole different beast.
Some of the tracks I’ve made that were the best received were the ones where I sat down and just kept it simple, didn’t over think it and basically willed it into existence.
It’s so easy to get lost in the details and the process that nothing ever gets done. I suffer from choice paralysis and falling down the sound design rabbit hole rather than keeping it higher level and refining it later.
Thank you for your inspirational and “behind the curtains” content. It’s a good, grounded wake-up call that can be applied to many disciplines.

Those 6 "basic steps" you defined are certainly useful to keep in mind! as you go through these "stages" in the creative process it's like closing one door behind you which can also give a sense of progress. I will try to keep these in mind as I go out there and ..
Have always wanted to try FL Studio as well, as soon as it runs on my OS I will do just that.

The fact that there is so much content on Fl Studio speaks volumes. People who don't even use FL are now trying FL for views because its the thing to do... it cracks me up. Fl gets a bad rap because of its beginnings. It has evolved into a powerhouse. Yet it still gets sh*t on, mainly because its workflow is so different from all the others. First impressions really can be lasting. It started out as pretty much a toy or a game and many think it still is.
Honestly I find this inspiring. To see someone who is so cracked at his craft be humbled by changing it up like this reminds us you're still human, and I respect very much that you're showing it online.

I scrolled past the Image-Line video in my feed and I thought it was strange to see you were using FL, since you never used it in a video. Then it all made sense when this video came after. FL is my DAW of choice, but I know how quirky it is after trying Ableton. It's not the easiest to understand and there's some things I don't like about it, but good work for going out of your comfort zone.
Cameron, I just added this video to my shortlist of favorite videos ever. And as for the final result, if ImageLine decided to put your video right beside a video made by a man with 20+ years of experience with FL Studio in their bundle page, I would say it was at the very least good enough. And considering it all led to this video here, I can safely say you made something (two things, actually) awesome.

Just watched the finished product and I have to say it's an amazing job. I would never in a million years guessed that you were new to FL Studio and the software bundle!
I am reminded of my favourite demotivational poster from 25 years ago with the quote “if you can’t do something well, then learn to enjoy doing it badly.” These words have made my life much more interesting.
I switched to Ableton completely last week after using Logic Pro X for 4 years, I thought it would be a pain but to my surprise I got the hang of it in just a few days and now my workflow is like twice as fast and efficient.
yeah fl studio is just way different than anything else out there. most other conversions are likely easier
What features did you find quicker to use?
@@ethanwimsett the biggest noticeable difference for me is that the plugin workflow is wayy more efficient in ableton, you can add a plugin/effect/whatever in less than 3 seconds by just doing CTRL + F and typing the plugin name, while in logic you have to navigate multiple dropdown menus to find what you’re looking for. Also tweaking parameters is far easier with ableton because basically every effect is “opened” up at all times in the bottom bar, also makes creating new automations far easier. Also the quality of the ableton stock and max for life plugins is really good. As someone that often has 4-10 effects on any sound, the workflow change is amazing
@@ethanwimsett Like all Daws, each have a workflow...And each daw can match your workflow... Not everyone plays, not everyone uses loops, not everyone writes to film etc..

Bro you are one of the most real people out here, you are not afraid to show that you are human and can screw up to, and that you don't know every thing. I am one of those people that has 50, I started tacks but none done. I've had FL since FL4. but never really dove into it, so with the latest version I still don't know some of the basics of the DAW, all my fault with some life changes that did not help. I'm just glad there is some one else that sometimes feel the same frustration I do, but you don't stop . thank for you honesty and sharing what wisdom you do have.👏

Your videos help me a lot. I turned 30, studied music now electronics and making music was always hard. But always worth it. It is getting harder for me to keep going and many of the problems i have, seems like you have them too. It is kind of cool to know i am not alone with the struggle. The struggle not to quit, even if you could anytime.

Yesterday, I was setting up to play a game for a bit when I started listening to this in the background. The message really resonated with me. I'm very much a beginner musician, and being keenly aware of it, frequently run into challenges to my skill. However, after listening, I felt inspired and encouraged. So, I saved my game file, closed it, and sat down to work.
Several hours later, I finished a little remix, from start to finish. It's my first time doing something like that, and I’m actually quite pleased with the result. So, I decided to play the game I'd started earlier and chill until I'd get tired. It turned out, I had saved my file as the prompt that pushed me to begin: "Do Or Do Not". I am very happy to report: I did.

This reminds me of of when I just started out as a chef few years ago. I always knew how to cook food at home for my self and so occasionally I did agency work for a stadium and hospital where the work was very easy I only had to cut the vegetable or food the food was already cooked and I had to plate it up. Then I realised I like cooking more the more I worked for the agency I was in my safe zone and didn’t wanna get out . I had opportunity to work for a better agency with better pay but it was for an actual chef position. This is where I really started cooking and it was really really hard at the beginning, there was many times I wanted to give up but I had a very supportive girl with me who always gave me words of encouragement and after like 2-3 week I entered a new level off cooking and I sharpens my steels.

I think it's important to show that it's not easy. It's not a walk in the park. This is a great motivator to when times are tough. That all artists go through this. And it's a part of the process that must be accepted to move forward. Amazing video as always.

For me it took a while to accept that i might not be as good others and maybe i'll never be professional But i can always strife to be better and improve. Thats one of my life philosophy. I'm a data consultant 9-5 so I've learned by now that if you find yourself in a situation where you need to do something quicker than you're able to learn to do it then IMMEDIATELY you should seek help. glad you did it bro! :D
