    You've got to try the Walrus Audio Kangra filter/fuzz. Highly underrated and has got the warmest envelope filter. Switch the envelope off and turn the filter all the way counter clockwise with the fuzz on (vintage no mid boost) and you've got an epic sub synth. Took it off the board only to put it back on.

    My first pedal was the MXR Envelope. Its one of the best on the market. I agree that the filters are lacking. I managed to get one of them to be decent however after coming back to it.
    Ill take a look at that octave pedal that youre talkinf about in the video. I was stoked when i found out the "Boctaver" was coming but was sadened by the lack of bottom end. I tried sticking eq on it, and it just doesnt have any. Sometimes i want that sine wavy type sound but im stuck with the regular octave in the helix until i find something different. I just used the Manta Filter with the helix for the first time and got some really cool organ type sounds and was able to adjust the filtering better with the Manta

    The MXR preamp is such a great tool. Simply super neutral and the EQ works great. It doesn't take up that much space on the board either. If I also get the HX Stomp, I'm having a hard time thinking about it, the MXR preamp with DI function will definitely be on the board too.

  • @craigsi16
    @craigsi16 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    34:52 just flip the placement of the first 2 pedals so the octave is on top with the input going up away from you instead. It would mean a slightly longer cable run from the filter to the stomp, but it's not too bad

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I considered that, but I need to access the octave way more than the filter so it's a little more convenient to on the front. I'll use a right-angle instrument cable into the octave to avoid catching it with my foot.

    I too have gone with an HX Stomp into the MXR Bass Preamp. No need to use the HX Global EQ, knobs are so much easier, a good signal to the amp, plus a nice out to go to the sound board.

    Did you arrange the octave and envelope pedals so their switches were close to the Stomp for a reason? Like ease of getting power to them? Or keeping the switches close together? Having feet like flippers myself, I'd have been minded to arrange the octave and envelope switches so they were at the edge of the board so it'd be less likely to catch the Stomp's switches inadvertently. Would be interested to know the design decision on that front

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The layout was all about the location of the power inputs plus the ease of using one small patch cable between the octave and the filter. It keeps the cabling neat.

    Hey thanks for the vid very cool small board! Quick question, I am thinking about buying an HX Stomp, is it possible to take a DI signal from the HX to FOH that would have any EFX blocks as well as an Amp and Cab sim while sending just the EFX blocks signal minus the Amp/Cab sims to an amp? Thanks!

  • @merdashuta4891

    Don't know if you already thought of this, but if you want a preamp you could start the signal from the hxstomp with the preamp you like and then use the send/returns for the octave and envelope, i use that exact setup and for me it works amazingly. The only problem i find is that i would like to use an analog compressor since i don't like the stomp ones, do you use in the stomp that works well for you?

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are major issues with the AD/DA conversion in the send/return on the HX Stomp. It destroys the natural sound of the bass when you have the block bypassed. I don't know why more bass players aren't experiencing this when they use the feature...

      But everyone on TH-cam is using DI’s with their HX Stomps 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Because I still need to rely on a DI pedal to go to the front of house, and I'd much rather have control over that, especially with the added bonus of EQ that the MXR Bass Preamp gives me.
      I could use the EQ in the Stomp, but that means using an EQ block on every preset. I like to have EQ separate from the multi fx, just like the octave and the filter. The Stomp is amazing for certain things, but in some areas it's still in its infancy.

      @@janekgwizdala You can go straight from HX to FOH. HX has Di built in. The only difference - its TRS output (Stereo Jack) instead of XLR. You can get TRS/XLR adapter and your good.

  • @conorlarkin1111
    @conorlarkin1111 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I believe that the HX Stomp’s outputs are actually TRS balanced outs, so you should be able to run a TRS-XLR adapter and not have noise, bypassing the need for a DI. I prefer a DI to an adapter cable every day of the week, but when trying to scale things down that’s always an option and then I just keep a couple spare adapters in my gig bag.

    Love the Podcast Janek! Regarding your Temple pedalboards comment. I have 2 different Temple pedalboards and love them! But I am NOT a fan of their screw on pedal mounting system. Your comment wasn't specific but I assume you ruled it out because of the mounting system. Firstly I found the adhesive from the mount to the pedal is almost permanent so after almost ruining 1 pedal I immediately abandoned that system and I just use dual lock on top of the board. That also allows me to be a little more accurate of my pedal placement vs the mounts. The boards are lightweight and I'm a big fan of their patch bays for i/o and power, makes life so easy. On the other hand the Mono Tick is such a high quality convenient little bag, as you've done here it almost pays to build the board around how you are going to carry/transport it.

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Totally right about why I chose not to use the Temple board. It's the mounting system that I'm not crazy about. Again, it's not that it doesn't work, it's a personal preference, and I feel I can be way more creative with the positioning and design with using dual lock.
      I can also see why Temple's add-ons like the I/O module are very attractive for people, it's a great idea.

      Because I don't own the Sushi Box. I also might still have chosen the MXR for this board even if I did though, just because it was such a rough stretch of traveling into a pretty hostile environment. I'm not sure how much I would have been into having a tube out in the middle of nowhere in Morocco for a gig.

    • @peadookie
      @peadookie 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@janekgwizdala makes total sense. Wind-blown sand + electronics doesn’t sound like a great combo, for sure. Admittedly, when you mentioned not wanting to drag a tube through a hostile environment, the very first thing to come to mind was “stage juice” before I realized you were talking about Morocco 😂
      I’m looking at putting a tube stage after my HX, Finally seems to fit the bill. I’m just a little cheap and lazy (the weight) to put the noble on my board.
      Anything else you’d recommend looking at in between the prices of the Noble/REDDI and the Finally for warming before putting it through a DI (if it isn’t a DI anyway)? I love my HX through my Mesa TT800, but as soon as I run direct it just sounds a bit sterile for my taste.
      Honestly, I’ve considered just sending a dry pre-EQ out of my Mesa (nice clean tube in the input gain stage). But it’d be great to get something on a board and not have to also carry around an amp.
      Have to say, I feel like a weenie for even insinuating that carrying an 8lb, small class D head is a “burden” when I think back to the glory days of 125-lb 2x10’s in the 90’s and 00’s haha
