I am an acoustic guitar player, but nothing hits me harder than a fine sounding saturated bass. Easily the thing I spend the most time on on my home recordings. Thanks for these wonderful explorations!
This is my TV/movie theater program for a little enjoyable time out! I don't have a TV and the movies are never worth it. So here and now, I buy my movie ticket for Philips' 'You Need Saturation', even though I'm just an amateur bass player - always curious, constantly learning, quite an art enthusiast. In every respect, lots of success, Philip!
That's really an amazing approach to everything, from recording to editing and mixing. Excellent sounds used throughout the whole track. Great job, Philip.
Just wanted to say, I'm a drummer who has recently started playing bass. Recently found your channel and have purchased both your triad courses. LOVE your channel, your production on the videos, playing and knowledge are all awesome, keep doing what your doing, really digging it!
Philip, this more than almost anything else that I've viewed on the Colour Box, makes me want to own a Colour Box. I love the content you're putting together - as long as it's life-giving to you, it's certainly worthwhile watching for me! Love what you put together with Rhett Shull too, but I'm really appreciating your bass-centric content here as well, being a multi-instrumentalist who started with bass guitar over two decades ago.
What a pure joy to watch this video. The groove and the video.. This is art. When i started the video i thought: Oh this is probably something existing he is jamming to. No he made this all by himself. This funky soulful jam is awesome.
Phillip - I feel that someone else has probably made this comparison by now, but the song you were working on in this video is making me think of Air's "La Femme D'Argent. You nailed the vibe whether you meant to or not. And you convinced me to order a COLOUR BOX! Congrats JHS!
I just picked up a 10th Anniversary Colour Box and searching brought me here. Loved this whole vid. The track is fantastic and your insight into production is as well. Insta-sub.
This was really interesting. Blown away by the production value and creativity here. I own a colour box v2 and have never really gotten my head around it so this is also super helpful.
I purchased one of these a few weeks ago in the anniversary color - this was the perfect video to get me excited for using the CB when it arrives! Thanks!
Man, as a musician, this video was so inspiring, what a great job you did, it really showed me a different perspective to music production, well done e
Nice video! Listening to isolated tracks by bassists like Jamerson, there's a lot of saturation from pushing the mixing board back in the day. Gave the bass some definition without overpowering the bottom end of the mix. I borrowed a Colour Box from a drummer and really liked it. I also play a Mustang with flats and the pedal can add some warm saturation and bring out the overtones. Ultimately I had to return the pedal, but found I can get in the ballpark using Logic's stock plugins such as the soft-clip on the compressor.
Love this video. I think I saw you consider the CB v2 back when you did that board rig with rhett, nice to see you get one and use it for mixing. I just got one and love it on bass!
Philip, can you do a video of IEMs specifically for bass players? My church wants to start using IEMs for all the musicians and I want to learn your insight on using IEMs to hear all the inputs and the metronome. Thanks.
Loved this! I use the colourbox on my bass pedalboard and I love the way it enhances my tone. I now feel like I need to buy a few more for other instruments!
Great video and great soiunds. I love the track a lot! Your bass sounds awesome and gives so much to the track! Really cool! PS: The drummer is a hero, too! Super drumming!
Well played sir! Came for tasty Mustang bass tones and stayed for cool production voodoo. I may have to give one of those a go and try some of those tricks. Thanks for the killer content! And... Kevin gets a subscriber too. Who can't use an occasional break beat to jam to?
I wish JHS would make stripped down, smaller budget version of the color box. To expensive and to big now. Anybody got a tip what I should get that would tick those boxes?
Very inspiring video. I wonder, would another Preamp Pedal like my Origin Bass Rig Super Vintage lend itself to these applications? The EQ controls are not as diverse, but generally it can serve a similar purpose, right? I'll definetly be trying it out on some drums soon
Love that preamp. You should absolutely try it. That pedal is great at an SVT sound which is pretty specific. Different pedals have their own saturation character. It’s up to you and your taste. I’ve only used that one on bass; haven’t tried it much for other instruments.
Voxengo Tube Amp is the only thing that i found that gives me this saturation without making it hard to use, i love it for palmmuting im using it for everything tho
Hello, I just got one of these and I noticed the noise floor (white noise) is quite loud when the master is turned up, how did you deal with this? Or did you just take it as part of the deal?
Noise floor on a preamp is rarely something that bothers me. It’s something that is par for the course and part of the vibe. In the mix no one will hear or care IMO.
Hey Philip, awesome video! Really inspiring! I’ve also made some good experiences using the Origin Effects DCX Boost on vocals and other sounds to give a little UA610 saturation. Just curious how you are running the drums and horn out of the DAW through the pedal and back in. My IK Multimedia Axe I/O has a reamp output but just curious about your process. Thanks!
A lot of the narration was isolated. Left some of the background orchestra buried in the vocal at times and kind of liked the temporary dissonance/tension you can hear towards the end. Great question!
No doubt the color box is cool for all kinds of things but if they had only made the high pass knob lowest setting at 20Hz instead of 160, then that feature would be super helpful for bass to control boominess. As it stands that feature just has to be switched off for bass use, and I have to use a separate HPF. Is anyone else frustrated by this?
sincerely love your style of video making, skilled, talented and creative and absolutely impressive plus informative and educational. thank you, you rock. happy thankful weekend.
What pups are in that mustang? I ended up getting a vintera ii, put some chrome xl flats on em, but i find the pups a bit lackluster. and noisy. any advice?
Whenever I saw this pedal I didn't understand it and I saw no point because it's a pedal. Now I see that the form factor is deceptive. I need to think of it like a console. And record everything into it. Instead of fitting it on a board.
Yo, this is good storytelling. But as a filmmaker of 20 years I want to offer one critique. Just talk to the camera more. Its really offputting to see where you are looking and NOT see what you are looking at. Plus, if you ever spoke to me like this in person, I'd walk away. If you are going to talk AT the camera like this, you need to talk TO the camera. We need your eye contact, even if you are blind. I bet you'd get 2x the views and video retention. You looking away the majority of the time makes this really uncomfortable to watch. I couldn't finish it. That said, I hope you make more vids! Its obvs ok to look off camera but when you are speaking you really need to give us your attention. -best

Cool track and awesome explanation of small tweaks to make it just a bit better in each case for a net larger impact.

“Green Dolphin Street” on a color video? Well played trumpet. Well played. 🎺
Man, great opening track. Late 90’s Ninja Tune feel.
Thank so much!!
This was an incredible video concept and execution. Well done. More please.
Man, that's a sick demo of a music product. Super fun and creative way to show how you could use the colour box. The intro song came out awesome!

Great conception and execution. Great to see/hear the device used in context
That's a pretty cool track! Great groove!
I appreciate the behind-the-scenes production peek.
Thank you, Philip 🙏🏻🤍
Thank you for this video. I’m an amateur that records my own stuff. It’s cool to see how you can shape music through Using EQ 😅🎉❤
So glad you liked it! You can really shape a song in tons of cool ways with eq

Excellent work. I really enjoyed the great intro song followed by how the colour box was used in creating the overall mood of the song. Cheers

I’ve read that this pedal does not work great with bass cut it cuts a lot of bass frequencies. Is it true ?
@RJ_HTx if you use the high pass filter then definitely. But that stays turned off for me. I have dialed in a little sub-bass boost for extra oomph.
Great video and great soiunds. I love the track a lot! Your bass sounds awesome and gives so much to the track! Really cool! PS: The drummer is a hero, too! Super drumming!

Check out the jhs crayon. It’s exactly that. Specifically the saturation side, not the eq side.
@@philipconradmusic Cool, thanks mate!
Fascinating video and great tune!
I can never seem to hear an effect a person calls “a subtle effect”. In this case, it just makes it a bit louder.

How did you separate/isolate the vocals from the music of the old commercial?
The latest version of Logic can separate stems
A lot of the narration was isolated. Left some of the background orchestra buried in the vocal at times and kind of liked the temporary dissonance/tension you can hear towards the end. Great question!
Which half-round set are you using?
D’Daddarios. The pink box; can’t remember the model.
Long scale, right? They don’t feel floppy on a mustang?
@@McDoinky There are two versions "ENR71regular light gauge" and "ENR72 medium gauge" - haven´t tried both but I definitely want to...

you would probably need some more free plugins than just that but yeah, achievable... in theory ...
