I am an acoustic guitar player, but nothing hits me harder than a fine sounding saturated bass. Easily the thing I spend the most time on on my home recordings. Thanks for these wonderful explorations!
This is my TV/movie theater program for a little enjoyable time out! I don't have a TV and the movies are never worth it. So here and now, I buy my movie ticket for Philips' 'You Need Saturation', even though I'm just an amateur bass player - always curious, constantly learning, quite an art enthusiast. In every respect, lots of success, Philip!
That's really an amazing approach to everything, from recording to editing and mixing. Excellent sounds used throughout the whole track. Great job, Philip.
Philip, this more than almost anything else that I've viewed on the Colour Box, makes me want to own a Colour Box. I love the content you're putting together - as long as it's life-giving to you, it's certainly worthwhile watching for me! Love what you put together with Rhett Shull too, but I'm really appreciating your bass-centric content here as well, being a multi-instrumentalist who started with bass guitar over two decades ago.
I purchased one of these a few weeks ago in the anniversary color - this was the perfect video to get me excited for using the CB when it arrives! Thanks!
Love this video. I think I saw you consider the CB v2 back when you did that board rig with rhett, nice to see you get one and use it for mixing. I just got one and love it on bass!
Nice video! Listening to isolated tracks by bassists like Jamerson, there's a lot of saturation from pushing the mixing board back in the day. Gave the bass some definition without overpowering the bottom end of the mix. I borrowed a Colour Box from a drummer and really liked it. I also play a Mustang with flats and the pedal can add some warm saturation and bring out the overtones. Ultimately I had to return the pedal, but found I can get in the ballpark using Logic's stock plugins such as the soft-clip on the compressor.
Loved this! I use the colourbox on my bass pedalboard and I love the way it enhances my tone. I now feel like I need to buy a few more for other instruments!
Philip, can you do a video of IEMs specifically for bass players? My church wants to start using IEMs for all the musicians and I want to learn your insight on using IEMs to hear all the inputs and the metronome. Thanks.
Very inspiring video. I wonder, would another Preamp Pedal like my Origin Bass Rig Super Vintage lend itself to these applications? The EQ controls are not as diverse, but generally it can serve a similar purpose, right? I'll definetly be trying it out on some drums soon
Love that preamp. You should absolutely try it. That pedal is great at an SVT sound which is pretty specific. Different pedals have their own saturation character. It’s up to you and your taste. I’ve only used that one on bass; haven’t tried it much for other instruments.
Well played sir! Came for tasty Mustang bass tones and stayed for cool production voodoo. I may have to give one of those a go and try some of those tricks. Thanks for the killer content! And... Kevin gets a subscriber too. Who can't use an occasional break beat to jam to?
Voxengo Tube Amp is the only thing that i found that gives me this saturation without making it hard to use, i love it for palmmuting im using it for everything tho
A lot of the narration was isolated. Left some of the background orchestra buried in the vocal at times and kind of liked the temporary dissonance/tension you can hear towards the end. Great question!
What pups are in that mustang? I ended up getting a vintera ii, put some chrome xl flats on em, but i find the pups a bit lackluster. and noisy. any advice?
Whenever I saw this pedal I didn't understand it and I saw no point because it's a pedal. Now I see that the form factor is deceptive. I need to think of it like a console. And record everything into it. Instead of fitting it on a board.
Yo, this is good storytelling. But as a filmmaker of 20 years I want to offer one critique. Just talk to the camera more. Its really offputting to see where you are looking and NOT see what you are looking at. Plus, if you ever spoke to me like this in person, I'd walk away. If you are going to talk AT the camera like this, you need to talk TO the camera. We need your eye contact, even if you are blind. I bet you'd get 2x the views and video retention. You looking away the majority of the time makes this really uncomfortable to watch. I couldn't finish it. That said, I hope you make more vids! Its obvs ok to look off camera but when you are speaking you really need to give us your attention. -best
Oft times,...these "production value" vids (generally), are like a bunch of dudes gathered round sniffing corks (or farts)! This video is not one of those.
Sick Opening
That bass tone!
Perfection
i said the same thing about your mother
I am an acoustic guitar player, but nothing hits me harder than a fine sounding saturated bass. Easily the thing I spend the most time on on my home recordings. Thanks for these wonderful explorations!
We need a whole album of the opening music... PLEASE!
Yeeeeah

So cool of you! Thank you for your support and interest. You are always welcome here and glad to have you ⚡️
Man, that's a sick demo of a music product. Super fun and creative way to show how you could use the colour box. The intro song came out awesome!
That's really an amazing approach to everything, from recording to editing and mixing.
Excellent sounds used throughout the whole track.
Great job, Philip.
Thank you!! 🙏🏻

This video is so sick man, I love how you broke down the entire track. The whole video feels very Tiny Songs-esqe and I really dig it 👍
Thank you!!
Great track and video.
Made me think about The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist.
Thank you!
Cool track and awesome explanation of small tweaks to make it just a bit better in each case for a net larger impact.
Great conception and execution. Great to see/hear the device used in context
I purchased one of these a few weeks ago in the anniversary color - this was the perfect video to get me excited for using the CB when it arrives! Thanks!
Excellent work. I really enjoyed the great intro song followed by how the colour box was used in creating the overall mood of the song. Cheers
Thanks so much! Glad to have you here ⚡️

Awesome video! I def need to get into my Colour Box V2 more so I love every cool video like this really showing awesome ways to use it on tracks
Love those Quincy Jones Serge gainsbourg basslines
*Herbie Flowers *Larry Johnson

Man, great opening track. Late 90’s Ninja Tune feel.
Thank so much!!
Great vid! From the first seconds I was hyped that it was a 15 minute song. Release that beast!!
Awesome track with some old school mixed with innovative sounds!
Thank you!
Loved this! I use the colourbox on my bass pedalboard and I love the way it enhances my tone. I now feel like I need to buy a few more for other instruments!
I’ve read that this pedal does not work great with bass cut it cuts a lot of bass frequencies. Is it true ?
@RJ_HTx if you use the high pass filter then definitely. But that stays turned off for me. I have dialed in a little sub-bass boost for extra oomph.
Such a great sneak peek into your producer’s brain. Thanks!
Wow that intro !! 🔥
Saturation = Win. From drums, to vocals and of course bass.
please release that intro song, it's so awesome!!
And with vocal and no vocal versions !!!!!
Let's go with "Underwater Donkey Kong level" for $800, Alex
😂
It’s called “Aquatic Ambience”, put some respect on its name.
Funky groove and timeless visuals for that intro
Heck yeah!!! We need more filthy Phillip! More of the raddest Conrad! Yes!!!!

I love your playing and tone ... and your style of your vids
“Green Dolphin Street” on a color video? Well played trumpet. Well played. 🎺
KILLER track
Thank you!!
Fantastic!

Thanks so much! Glad to have you here. And Kevin is awesome; you won’t regret it!
Ooh imma have to add a comment to boost you in the algorithm! This shit rules!!!
Thanks so much! Glad to have you here ⚡️
Fascinating video and great tune!
Fantastic video! Very cool.
Thank you!!
One of your best vids
Thank you!!
Very cool video, very cool idea, very cool sponsor!
damn dude this rules
Viiiiiiiibes 🔥🔥🔥
⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️ thanks for starting them with the pocket fatness
Great song
Thank you!
Great video !
super cool

Which headphones are you using Phil?
Man if all ads were like this I wouldn't be mad at all.
Where is your keyboard from it looks rad
1970s moog prodigy. Bought it from the original owner.
@ haha I meant your typing keyboard! It looks cool
Oh haha that was on Amazon 😂
Groovy baby
Thank you!
We want that song out !
Thinking about releasing it…
Man you sound so good on a mustang!
Thank you! Love mustang 🐎
How did you separate/isolate the vocals from the music of the old commercial?
The latest version of Logic can separate stems
A lot of the narration was isolated. Left some of the background orchestra buried in the vocal at times and kind of liked the temporary dissonance/tension you can hear towards the end. Great question!
Jamerson’s bassline influenced 🙂
One of my heroes! Thank you 🙏🏻
Which half-round set are you using?
D’Daddarios. The pink box; can’t remember the model.
Long scale, right? They don’t feel floppy on a mustang?
@@McDoinky There are two versions "ENR71regular light gauge" and "ENR72 medium gauge" - haven´t tried both but I definitely want to...
@ yeah but I’m looking for medium scale half wound strings. They don’t have to be daddario
Mustangs go through body, so I haven’t had an issue with full length strings personally.
What pups are in that mustang? I ended up getting a vintera ii, put some chrome xl flats on em, but i find the pups a bit lackluster. and noisy. any advice?
These are the Curtis Novak fat pickups ⚡️⚡️⚡️
@phillip. Great pickups and really nice playing !!!
@Smokes. Quality pickups matter but pickup height and playing technique are key.
I don't know why they put a switch in it, id never turn it off 😅
Ooh, omnichord.
Whenever I saw this pedal I didn't understand it and I saw no point because it's a pedal. Now I see that the form factor is deceptive. I need to think of it like a console. And record everything into it. Instead of fitting it on a board.
Yeah, I just think of it as a console channel strip in a box. Works on all kinds of things, and plays well with other pedals too!
Do I?
Sup Justinnnn
Smooth 🙌💫💦
🙏🏻

That’s a You problem.

Glad to not sniff farts. Thanks for watching!
Or just use a free EQ and a compressor in your DAW?
you would probably need some more free plugins than just that but yeah, achievable... in theory ...
