    The space marine chapter that operates under the assumption that surgical strikes on enemy weakpoints and assassinating critical leadership figures is the ideal way to wage war; by ending it as quickly as possible.
    Otherwise known as the "Sensible" Astartes.

      Black Library simply lacks the authors who can convincingly represent their way of war. Gav Thorpe does a very good job in the Horus Heresy books, but George Mann who deals with 40k Ravens isn't as good IMO.

    Its sad that there is a major underappreciation of the fact that the Raven Guard are actually super nice guys even if fatalistic. Sure they may not equal the Salamanders in this aspect, but they are a close second, especially with their tendencies of protecting the weakest and forgotten

    • @p_serdiuk
      @p_serdiuk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      On the flip side, they will and do purposefully sacrifice Guardsmen units in the name of victory as preserving lives isn't their primary concern. Winning is. I would rank them behind Salamanders, Blood Angels, and even Ultramarines on friendliness to mortals because of that.

      @@johnivanoplimo5172 I love how when Ultramarines went to kill Alpha Legion in the aftermath of horus heresy, the Alpha Legion dug in their homeworld and painted their armors blue. A boatload of Ultramarines died to friendly fire, no-one knew who was who, and finally when the Ultramarines pushed into Alpha Legion's core camp... well, Alpharius came to fight Guilliman one on one. And Guilliman oneshot Alpharius, who was the size and shape of one of his normal marines.
      Best of all, Guilliman thought he had killed alpharius, but he just killed a Alpha legionnaire sergeant whose soul had been lit by Alpharius to make him 'feel' like his primarch. And Ultramarines retreated from the planet soon after, breaking the planet's crust with orbital fire while the rest of their fleet, which had oddly grown more numerous since the invasion, left the system.

      The idea is that most space marines utilize the Mark 7 variant of Power Armour. The Raven Guard use Mark 6 because 1) the armor is known as the "corvus pattern" 2) They were the first astartes to use mark 6 during the Horus Heresy, so they were the only ones equipped with it during that time.

    I liked that Raven Guard ships during the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy utilized unorthodox shields that rendered them invisible. The pursuing Traitor Legion Fleets had to blind fire in an effort to destroy Covus Corax's fleeing battle barge; a tactic that failed because Angron was lacked patience and Perturabo had the biggest cannons that fired too slowly.

    Don't let the new 'emo fringes' fool you. These Astartes were preeminent in warfare that MAKES SENSE and had no shortage of deeply talented combatants through out its history. Corax was amongst the best all around Primarchs in strategy as well as personal combat. (Ref. Beating Horus in a spar and Guilliman in a chess like game)
    If you read deep into their symbols they are reminiscent of early American culture.
    They nod to Native American cultures with their Raven symbolism/motifs, Edgar Allen Poe, and even the combat style of the Revolutionary army. I could be wrong to some extent but that's what I get from them.

    I'm not generally a big fan of the primaris, but gw could really win me over with them by giving the ravenguard some unique units, like stealthy boy primaris with long range rifles like the eliminators or the option of a unique close combat weapon and suppressed bolt pistols that can strike, disappear and redeploy.
    I think it could be very fluffy while being strong, with a small surgical elite army that's hard to kill because of stealth and hard hitting if deployed correctly.

      According to the "Sons of the Emperor" Anthology chapter "Shadows of the Past", Corvus was still in the warp some time after the heresy, and will probably not come back from it... that doesn't mean he is dead though, oh no. Lexicanum, the Warhammer 40k wiki, put it this way:
      "At some point he became mutated by the powers of the Warp, turning into a creature made of darkness and shadow itself. Using his new abilities, Corax wreaked havoc on a Word Bearers Daemon World in the Eye of Terror. Far beyond the abilities of average Word Bearers, the Daemon Primarch Lorgar himself appeared before Corax and the two engaged in a vicious duel. Corax managed to dominate the battle, forcing Lorgar to retreat and close the portal he had arrived from. As Lorgar vanished, Corax vowed that he would hunt down and slay the Daemon Primarch."
      Note that will Lexicanum states that he became "mutated" by the powers of the warp, he was *NOT* recognized as something daemonic by Lorgar. Corvax literally said that the primarchs, underneath all their human facade and superhuman bodies (... that they got from big E... with help?) were nothing less than creatures of the warp.

    I believe their "modern" problems with the Raven Guard geneseed were an early attempt by GW to explain their proficiency with the kind of warfare that produces the fewest losses, but because we now know of Istvaan and their travails during the Heresy, it's a bit redundant, and it also doesn't make sense as Terra should have preserved their original geneseed that didn't significantly degrade due to Corax's experiments.
    In my head canon, while the Raven Guard geneseed deteriorated a bit over time, it remains as good as that of any other First Founding chapter. The long time that they spend training in the Scout company and the autonomous and wide-ranging nature of their Companies mean that they still fight understrength more often than other Chapters (as it's harder for them to send replacements) and they're okay with that.

      "Wraith-Slipping"
      Described as being a combination of mental discipline and martial art, the process of "wraith-slipping" is to take advantage of one's surroundings to conceal one's presence. This is not a psychic power but rather a collection of disciplines and techniques that the Raven Guard use to conceal their visual and aural presence despite their use of power armour. It is a technique that is described both prior to the outbreak of civil war in the Horus Heresy[28] and up to the 41st Millennium[24a].

    • @ianharrison5758
      @ianharrison5758 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      All the legions had general redundancy in them. They all knew how to fight by any combat doctrine. They simply had preferences and specialities that are wholly unique to them.
      The Alpha Legion act more as agents than soldiers. They are like the Astartes equivalent to the FBI in an abstract sense. They were best when they completely and utterly unseen. They were masters of subterfuge and knowledge manipulation. They were who you sent in to weaken the power bases through spies, informants, and even potentially puppet authorities.
      No one did this better.
      The raven guard are the gold standard of guerrilla warfare and covert operations. They are like Navy seals or Green Berets more than agents like the Alpha Legion. You sent the ravenguard to strike key points in the power structure of any enemy. They would utilize spies just like the alpha legion, but unlike them, who would whittle the core of their enemies power away, the raven guard struck fracture points as soon as they became known.
      The end result of either legions methods is the same, and the final method of ending the conflict may even be the exact same(an assassination, informants leading to critical information being exposed, etc) but the overall strategy either of the legions would have used to achieve this was unique in many many ways

When an aspirant astartes fails to take the RG gene seed it is like rejecting an organ transplant, but not because they mutated to death. And there are no major mental or physical ailments residing within the gene seed. The raven guard look funny, but to no ill effect. They act emo, but that's a cultural thing. The lost some astartes organs, but it's always the same ones missing in each new marine.

    • @garglthunder9627

      "Nevermore" will I fail my Legion. He was desperate to replenish his Legions numbers and did, what only the Emporer had done before him, modify the Gene-Seeds. He wanted to speed up the process of adapting a Neophytes to the various genetic augmentations so as to speed up the forming of new Astartes. For a while it looked like it worked, too! But then ( And it is rumored that various Warp Entities had their hand in this) some Neophytes mutated uncontrollably, they grew gigantic and disfigured, growing new and grotesque limbs. Some lost their minds, becoming nothing more than jibbering, howling beasts, others still held onto their minds. These mutants, those that kept their minds are still regarded as honored brothers and part of the Raven Guard and even are fitted with custom armor to fight with their Brothers! But even the mindless ones that survived are still locked up in a cellar... Corvus Corax, who felt responsible for all this was crushed by this. For a whole year, he locked himself in his Tower not speaking a single word before leaving for the Eye of Terror. "Nevermore" was his first spoken Word after a Year of Silence and his last, a Vow, a Warning, a bitter Good Bye...
