I have a theory that the Alpha Legion has been deliberately split up into three factions by Omegon: a branch loyal to the Imperium, a branch in service of the Cabal and likely in concert with other xenos, and a branch that has deliberately fallen to Chaos. I believe he is doing this to test which faction is strongest, and therefore determine where his loyalties lie, and then he will emerge and retake his legion as Alpharius once more!

Sons of the Hydra is a fascinating Alpha Legion book. It follows a traitor Alpha Legion group, that believe they do the Emperor's will by purging the weak from the Imperium
You can't be a traitor if your war cry is "FOR THE EMPEROR!"
I like that part more where the protagonist, witnessing how Lord Dominatus took control over multiple Alpha Legion warbands, comes to believe he's Omegon and urges him to return openly to the Legion, unite it and help bring back Emperor's vision of Imperium.
@ i don't think he means eugenics purging, i think he means something along the lines of "Oh, you have a small hole in the wall you're supposed to defend? Pathetic, you must be culled so the Imperium notices this weakness and deal with it" type purge. They're weird like that, just doing things that they think will aid the Big E and his corpse of an Empire.

One of my favourite pieces of 40k fiction is a short story from a White Dwarf about some imperial troopers who are saved by some Space Marines who turn out to be Alpha Legion.

They are all Alpharius. At this point I won't be surprised that after being slew by Rogal, Alpharius somehow fragmented his spirit and dispersed those fragments into every single Alpha Legionnaire (and Omegon too). Thus when any of them says that they are Alpharius, then it ain't a joke.

It's also not necessarily just "head canon." They use the pyscho training normal marines go through to like learn Imperial Gothic and basic knowledge stuff to basically scan and copy Alpharius's mind. So like, it's possible that many/most/all Legionaires individually believe they're an undercover Alpharius hiding in plain sight as a normal infantryman.

@@garpogods8323 Harassing and destroying weak elements of the imperium while acting as the enemy is sth that could be praised as loyal except for the fact that there a better ways to do it, less convoluted than this one, and while they battle against the imperium to strengthen it they also weaken it and create more problems for the inquisition and other organizations to solve but then again this is the Alpha Legion and it is probably part of a greater plan.

Yeah the emperor almost defeated chaos.
The Cabal had some kind of psychic device that was supposed to prove that what they were saying was true. I don't remember the exact details, but Alpharius and Omegon walked away genuinely believing in the prophecy. As for whether or not they really intended to go along with the plan, that (like a lot of things) is murky, but they did cut ties to the Cabal after the Drop Site Massacre.

@Pedro Kantor's Crimson Fist up your *** while I agree that GW treat the Alpha Legion as an afterthought, however I think the "good bad guy" is meant to be the counter to the Space Wolves being the "bad good guys".
And as for "helping destroy humanity to save the universe", I think it makes some sense. Out of all the Primarchs Alpharius is really the only truly cunning one. Almost all the other Primarchs tend to be blunt, direct or only interested in their immediate status or success.
Who beter to understand the grand machinations of a malevolent force than some one who's whole existence is working in the grand machinations of a "benevolent" force?
Chaos tries subtlety, coercion and guile to win followers, the Alpha Legion are perfectly comfortable in that role and would see it better than anyone else, so it makes sense that they could see the final outcome and decided to help...

In Greek mythology, if a hydras head is cut off, It regrows. The alpha legion revere the hydra. Could alpharius's essence flow through each warrior making them alpharius/omegon in the process and should they die the essence goes to another alpha legion warrior?

I still cant figure out if they are helping the imperium or not. They always seem to contradict themselves as every story has them doing something different.

Out of all the Traitor legions, the Alpha Legion is definitely tied for first with the Thousand Sons. The Alpha's color scheme, their tactics, the fact that they barely side with Chaos and will side with the Imperium from time to time. Everything about them is against what the other chapters and legions are and I love it.
Master of disguise would fit perfectly as their theme.

I believe Alpharius has a special gift, he is able to spread through space marines like a virus. There’s something in his blood that once consumed allows Alpharius to link with that marine.
I remember in a short story a alpha marine legionnaire had to drink a concoction before his mission began. I believe it even said that some of the primarchs blood was mixed into the potion. After drinking the marine becomes more intelligent and stronger. He then began referring to himself as Alpharius.
This would fit the hydra symbol. Each time you kill a Alpharius their are more to take his place. The only way to eliminate him, is to cut off the original head.

Its quite simple really, the alpha legion are everyone, they hear everything and see everyone, they are your cup of tea in the morning or your favourite family pet, they know everything about you.

My theory of how they are multiple Alpharius /Omegon across the Galaxy, I would like to believe that Alpharius and Omegon's unique ability is first that they share the same soul and mind (One soul in two bodies) and two that they can either temporarily or permanently transfer their essence in any of their Space Marines bodies. And since many Alpha Legionaries fashion their look, body build and even height according to Alpharius (Omegon), their ruse goes undetected. Which explains why not even a psycher can't tell who the real or fake Alpharius is. They all feel his (their) essence in every Marine or even agent of the Alpha Legion. If their body gets destroyed their essence just transfers to another vessel and so on. So basically Alpharius / Omegon is similar to Vulcan. Instead of their bodies, their souls are perpetual and they keep existing as long there is a vessel. The perfect deception, the perfect lie. Cut the head of the Hydra and two more heads will grow in its place.

i have 2 theories, one of them starting from this video.
1. The Alpha legion is a loyalist legion but, knowing that the emperor of mankind is a perpetual want to release him from his current bonds so that he can regenerate, basically believing that the empire is keeping the emperor a prisoner.
2. Alpharius and Omegon took what the Xenos said and made it their own, basically they dont want either side to 'win' so a little bit of help for human here a little help for the chaos powers there and sprinkle a good amount of secrecy on top to make a alpha legion brew.
I wonder what if Omegon became an open loyalist during the horus heresy, a civil war within a civil war

My guess regarding their recruitment strategies: They conduct it by corrupting the geneseed and psychoindoctrination of other chapters and legions, and among those MIA or straight up AWAL a number of them induct themselves into the Alpha Legion.

Complaining loudly about why Slaaneshi Daemonettes won’t talk to them
I had a very different interpretation of why Alpharius Omegon joined Horus: they were aware that the side they joined would lose (and why not? They'd be perfectly positioned to sabotage the efforts of their "allies"). They weren't trying to protect the galaxy by destroying Chaos; they were protecting humanity from Horus. It doesn't really make sense for them to forsake humanity for the sake of the filthy xenos inhabiting the rest of the galaxy.
So why do many of them continue their war on the Imperium? Well, Alpharius Omegon did like their secrets after all...
I would have laughed so hard if after the opening titles he just said.
"Simply they are Alfarius" and then ended.
The legion we know nothing about and we love them all the more for it.
I’m still of the opinion that some of the Alpha Legion are not all traitors. Some are still loyal to the Emperor but maybe not completely loyal to the Imperium.
Just double agents working all sides from behind the scenes, but keeping the scales in the Imperium favor albeit slightly so to not show their hand.
In the case of the Alpha Legion. Trust no one. Not even yourself.
