I'm a dentist. You can brush your teeth with a manual or an electric toothbrush. It's all about your technique! Electric toothbrushes are great because they make brushing easier. They can also have cool features like a timer and a pressure sensor. That's why I recommend them. But remember, toothbrushes bristles can't fit between your teeth. That's why we say to use floss, to clean those tight spots.
It's best to brush your teeth two times every day, but if you can only do it once, do it before bed. When you sleep, you don't want the germs in your mouth to eat your dinner leftovers all night. When you brush with toothpaste that has fluoride, only spit it out and don't rinse if you are a grown up. You want the fluoride to stay on your teeth to make them strong!

@@Lmb_kunhe mentioned a timer. My toothbrush has a pressure senser to watch me from pressing too hard, and goes off every 30 seconds to tell me to move on. It reminds me to check everywhere.
However, as a once-a-dayer, I'm glad that before bed is better than the morning since that's what I do. Maybe this will push me to be a 2 times a day person though.

Even after each day, *after brushing,* you still have plaque build up. Do not skip brushing. It builds up quick, and eats through your virtually irreplaceable teeth.

@@SarahAbramova I can confirm being raised in a dentist household I was told constantly that flossing IS PART of the brushing process. Your tooth brush can not reach in-between your teeth, and since your teeth are a three-dimensional object, plaque can build up and start forming cavities anywhere on the outside of your teeth.

IDK about that I have skipped brushing plenty of times and my teeth have always been healthy Not one issue. Back before I was told I had type 2 diabetes I rarely flossed and had a day or two where I forgot to brush and was only brushing once a day. NEVER had an issue, Healthy teeth. I still have a healthy mouth but to combat other health issues I floss daily and brush 2 if not 3 times a day and Sometime I only do it once a day But still no issues. See that in just myself I figure that if you're at least more regular and miss here or there the damage wont be even half as bad as if you don't brush or floss at all.

I have super sensitive teeth, so I get sensidyne. I honestly look for the tooth paste that has the most coverage, like if there is a cavity protection, sensitivity help, whitening. But, sometimes that isn't the best. Cavity protection is the highest priority for me, I am prone to cavities, so I always choose a toothpaste that helps with that. Idk if this helps, but this is how I have navigated the toothpaste aisle.

They didn’t taste bad though, so it’s kinda weird to me that whoever made yours decided to have them taste bad. The ones I used as a kid was made so both adults and kids could use them, so they obviously made sure it didn’t taste bad so kids would also be fine with them.

i actually use the nano/1000 bristle brush for sensory reasons as an autistic adult, and also because it gives me feedback when ive done an efficient job (my teeth sort of feel and make a small squeaking sound when the plaque is off). i do use the plaque revealing tablets too to help, you definitely need to be brushing for longer with this toothbrush than others as well so thats something to note. i previously had an electric toothbrush and i felt it was so harsh, especially since my gums are already oversensitive because dental hygiene has always been a struggle for me (and brushing after awhile of not brushing does hurt). anyway i didn't realize how much the sensory aspect of brushing played a part in it

another factor that affects how well you brush is how crowded are your teeth. For example it is more difficult for me to brush properly as my teeth are packed to the point that my teeth rotated a little to make space for themselves. from the front my teeth are straight and easy to brush but in the back it is hard to reach without practically shoving my toothbrush right into my gag reflex

I've tried a ridiculous amount of brushes over the years and nothing comes close to a tangle teezer - I have longish, thick, processed hair so there are a lot of knots & tangles to deal with and other brushes just hurt or take too long and rip knots out rather than actually detangling them 🙃. (The only other brushes I do actually love and use are kent boar bristle brushes but they're more for smoothing and distributing the oils at my roots down to the lengths).
I'd be super interested to see if there are any other brushes nowadays that compare bc I'm not gonna try another brand at this point unless I know I'm not wasting my money 😅

I am sure others have mentioned it here, but I figured echoing crucial information is never a bad thing. I will preface this all with the fact that I am not a Dentist or a trained professional related to teeth. I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with several amazing dentist that give me lots of insight and information:
    1. When using an electric or sonic tooth brush you actually need to do a different holding and brushing method. I have never heard of this "hold it and let the spin move around the teeth". My dentists have told me that you are supposed to hold the brush at and angle towards the gum and hold it in place. Slowly moving it laterally (forward and back). You need to put the strength in to hold it in place to make sure it brushes everything properly. The other way to see it is that if you are moving it around, then the moving brush won't be able to properly scrub the surface. It won't be able to go deep enough.
    2. Also another great thing about new electric tooth brushes is that they have a self timer of 2 min in them. So many of them shut off after 2 minutes which reminds you to keep brushing that whole duration. Some even have intermittent buzzing (at like 30 sec) as a heads up.
    3. One of the nurses that cleaned up my teeth told me that if I were ever too busy to brush and floss, that I should always choose to floss. This comment is directed towards someone who is in their late 20s so this probably doesn't apply to everyone. But she emphasized that floss is one of the most important things to do. Its THE way to get rid of plaque.
I think the first point is the most important. Sadly this might mean that your results are a little skewed. But it also highlights the fact that these tools are becoming common place, but many are not aware of the proper technique to use them so in the end they come out being used improperly and seen as less effective. (Definitely looking at Amy as she is violently brushing her teeth with the electric tooth brush). Just wanted to put this out there to share information to ensure the general public are more aware of these facts

It'd be interesting to see a test on that if there's a follow-up to this theory.

Hello there, I'm a dental student here to answer your question! You really don't need much toothpaste, and that's because toothpaste doesn't really do much to remove plaque. 80% or more of the plaque that is removed when you brush is from the mechanical action of the toothbrush. So, if you were to brush without toothpaste, it would be at least 80% as effective as brushing with toothpaste. The main benefit of toothpaste is the fluoride, and the other ingredients are much more about the psychology of making you feel clean. So, as long as you have enough toothpaste to put a thin layer over your teeth, you're all set! It doesn't take much.

I switched from a rotating electric brush to Sonicare and the big benefit is, that Sonicare has solid stems, while the rotating ones are hollow. For me that resulted in all sorts of mouth fluids to run through the brushhead down my arm with no way of stopping that. With Sonicare I can brush for way longer and hopefully getting a better cleaning result.

I get your logic, but most consumers don't have access to dentist direction outside of regular visits which is often once or twice a year if at all. It may be better to go without to demonstrate how the average consumer will choose and use a brush.

14:25 honestly, that was my same question! Last I read, the Vikings used chew sticks, which is very different to a pillow-like brush.
Also, here’s a tip; don’t brush at a 90 degree angle: brush at a 45 degree angle. Helps get under the gumline

  • @ubtpixielox

Tips on electric toothbrushes from discussions I've had with dentists: Don't use them like "brushes" (i.e. rubbing them back and forth), just give them a second or two to sit on each tooth (but remember to do all sides of each tooth). Specifically talking about the rotating round ones, angle them so they can do their work and clean stuff out from under the edge of your gums.
The main reasons I prefer electric toothbrushes is because of the ease and consistency. I struggle with being certain I'm doing things "right", so having something that brushes at a consistent speed and has a built in timer for how long to brush my teeth means I don't have to keep questioning if I've been doing enough/not too much. Also, I struggle a bit with some of the movements required for brushing my teeth with a regular toothbrush, so having something I can just hold and put against my teeth gives me a much better ability to properly reach all the parts of my mouth.

I know a water pick isn’t a replacement for floss, it’s supposed to be used in conjunction with it. But like you floss gets stuck in my teeth. I’ve had wisdom teeth pushing my other teeth together, and now some teeth I can’t even get floss in between. So I’m saving up for a water pick so I can do something.

Idk if anyone from Team Theorist will see this, but if/when you guys do end up doing a theory on flossing, I think it's important to note the battery life of water flossers and various non-rechargeable electrical dental products. When I first got my water flosser, it definitely had a learning curve much life the toothbrushes you all used during this experiment, and it also felt like it destroyed my gums from how powerful the water pressure was. That being said, when the batteries start to get low, there's significantly less pressure from the water flosser. So much so that when I change the batteries, it always startles me with how powerful the pressure is all over again; it almost causes me to have to relearn to use my water flosser all over again. To me, it feels like I get a less sufficient job of flossing done when the batteries start to lose power, but I don't know if that's actually true or just my perception of what's happening because I'm feeling less in my mouth. I've also been wondering for a while now if said lack of power (that also possibly includes a gradual performance loss) and the price of regularly buying batteries is better than just using floss/ a floss pick.

It is, floss tends to catch between teeth, and now that we eat less grains our teeth have less space to grow.
