Alchemy - The Hermetic Gold-Making of Cleopatra the Alchemist - Ancient Alchemy in Theory & Practice

  • Cleopatra the Alchemist (fl. 3-4th CE Alexandria?) was a profound innovator in the field of the hermetic science of alchemy. From theory, to laboratory practice, to the literary character of early alchemical texts her influence can be felt centuries later in both Islamicate and European alchemy. Indeed, the powerful image of the Ouroboros or tail-devouring serpent with the Hermetic thesis that "ἓν τὸ πᾶν - All is One" is to be found on her famed Chrysopoeia ("gold-production"). This episode explores her theory and practice of alchemy.

There's a french translation of some of the Zosimos' texts made by Michelle Mertens, and she says that the title of "Cleopatra's chrysopoeia" might be a copyist error, based on the fact that this exact page comes after a Zosimos' text and that some of the diagrams (specially the stylized ouroboros) correspond with the diagrams found right after Zosimos' texts on other alchemical manuscripts. If that's true, I think it's really sad because that means the chrysopoeia of Cleopatra has not been transmitted to us.
By the way, thank you for your amazing content. I've been learning a lot with your videos in the last few months.

10:10 -- Honestly, that little collection of symbols near what looks to be a serpent's tail reminds me of the catholic mass. It looks like a figure standing next to an altar with a monstrance on it calling down the spirit of Christ -- the P with the line through it (or a P with an X through it) is sometimes used to denote Christ. I think that symbol is trying to refer to transubstantiation of the eucharist. Maybe it's trying to imply that following the instructions on the page will result in a similar change in substance -- turning something into gold.

@@TheEsotericaChannel and fusion is being developed as a safer source of clean atomic energy and even in theoretical and observational astrophysics, specifically heliophysics, the workings of the sun (why its coronal shell is counterintuitively hotter than its surface) remains a physics problem yet to be solved. I’m thinking it’s no surprise that one of the earliest recognized founders/fathers/geniuses of modern physics, Isaac Newton, was an alchemist.

I'm interested in your thoughts about Jung's exploration of Alchemy & Gnosticism from the psychological perspective. My 15 y/o self ended up following these same studies to Jung, a true #sexyhermetic #pleroma

Interesting, so did Cleopatra the alchemist precede the solomonic hermetic traditions? Of course I know that she did not preceded the historical figure but did the hermetical text and legend show up before the ones on solomon? Thanks for clarification on this!

@@TheEsotericaChannel that sucks, it's so interesting that the oldest confirmable alchemists were women but Nicholas Flamel is the poster boy for mainstream media, and he most likely wasn't an alchemist. Thanks for the amazing videos I have been devouring them!
