There are just some horrible people who use the anonymity of social media to make snide, negative remarks that make them feel like they have some significance- they don’t . Ignore them, your real YT community has only constructive, supportive, positive things to say!
I am so glad to have found your channel. Exactly what I was looking for! I am 82 but I don't "feel" old, just "older". I still want to look my best and not become an invisible little old lady, but in an elegant way.
I never gave up my matching, more or less, accessories, even when it was supposedly “out of style”. I love the classic, restrained look of a same-color, high-quality leather bag, belt and footwear. I so agree about simplicity, about 90% of elegance is just simplicity and restraint, the rest is about quality, classic styles and well-chosen, personally flattering colors. I’ve always preferred a timeless, elegant and classic look and I think it’s the most sustainable. We get extra mileage from classic, simple wardrobe items, they don’t look dated for a long time, and they’re much more versatile than super-trendy, statement items. I always find a few trends I love, but they are always the ones that fit into my classic style framework. The rest I ignore or perhaps adopt a less extreme version, if I like a trend.
I bought a complete wardrobe, unexpectedly, while in England - all in charity shops. I came home with 5 pairs of linen pants the were £2.50 a pair! No one here in Canada has the same clothes. My base colours are black, navy, dark chocolate, grey and oatmeal. I came home with what I now know would be considered a Tea dress - thanks for informing me! Blouses, sweaters, a handbag, and a scarf...all can be mixed and matched. Loved that trip and my souvenir wardrobe!
Hello, thank you for your comment. Ah, that sounds like a great find. Yes the charity shops here can be great if you know where to look. Yes I have come to learn they are not called Tea dresses everywhere!
The thing I’m learning is that since I retired I do not need as many clothes. Very few in fact. And the clothes I need are entirely different from before. I dressed up every day for work complete with heels, jewelry, makeup etc. The whole enchilada so to speak and I loved it. Now I only dress like that maybe once a week or every other week. I see clothes in the store or online and think “oh I want that” then reality sets in and I remember I just won’t wear it. My wardrobe is a 1/4 of what it was and I’m okay with that. Im learning to dress pretty but comfortable just for me even when I am staying home. I love being retired but wow it’s an adjustment.
Hi Lala thank you for your comment. I can only imagine it must be a huge adjustment. But what I love about your comment is that you have taken control of it in a way that suits you.
I clicked on this video because i thought it was going to show flattering, but updated hairstyles for over 50! I stayed and watched the whole video anyway. It was interesting. I’m 68.
Hi Barbara, thank you for your comment. I’m glad you enjoyed it even though you did not come here for that! Interestingly I am planning on doing a few collaborative videos with hair and make up artists so stay tuned!
Thank you for this excellent video! I agree with everything you said. Getting confidence is probably the most crucial advise of all that nobody else seems to mention. Would just like to add one thing: wear clothes that fit your body well. If they don't, bring them to a tailor for altering.
I love your advice and glad I found your channel. Although the online shop recommendations are great, most are really expensive! I know you said quality items but just can't afford most of these
Oh bless you. This is not uncommon, I know that doesn’t help, but I see it all the time. Shout if you need my help and I we can book in a consultation 😊
Would love to see more for fashion conscious 80 yr olds. I’m 5’1, size 18, and like most women over 70 carry weight around my middle. I was a slim size 10 in my twenties and have gradually crept up in weight, which affects confidence. I don’t wish to diet at my age, but want to feel good again so any tips would be appreciated!! ❤
Hi Joy, Thank you for your comments. This is on my list of videos to do as I have had several requests for this. Subscribe to the channel to get alerted to when I upload. I have a few scheduled right now, but plan to record and upload this too.
The thing about confidence: when menopause hit, people started ignoring me, to the point that they don't even allow me space on the sidewalk. I don't think I walked without condidence or even changed the way I looked, but I became invisible. Now I have decided not to step away from the sidewalk, but it takes extreme amounts of assertiveness, so people walk by me, not even looking at me for a second, or acknowledging me. I don't feel the fault is with me. It reflects society's opinion of mature women
I find this really sad however I do understand what you mean. When I feel like I’m being fobbed off or ignored, I think I take up more space. I feel like that is what we need to do as a collective - take up space and be seen.
I so agree! Somehow we just don’t seem to matter any more. Shops and brands should take more care, we’re the only ones with big budgets to spend! Nit those teenagers who still live at Mom and Dad’s. 🙂
Thank you, I have just come across your channel and I bloody love it 💌. You are so amazing to listen to and make everything so easy to follow. Just going through all your older video 👍. Can you do a video showing putting colours together, especially natural colours (beige/brown/coffee etc). also you mention length of trousers, can you please do a video (sorry if you've already done these) showing if wearing wide leg and Block heels, or high or flats and if wearing straight leg trousers etc. Thank you that me sorted watching your video's for the next few weeks. xx
Thank you for your kind comments yes I will keep this in mind for future content. I have a few lined up at the moment but thank you for the suggestions.
Thank you for creating this channel. I'm 65 and have always loved fashion, primarily classic styles. While I don't see myself as vain, it's important to me to look my best. You're right about confidence - it makes a huge difference! Elegance is timeless and attractive at any age! I would like to see a video about elegant and sexy clothing for mature women! I’m in a relationship with the love of my life and live in an area with many beautiful women. I want to stand out for my man, who appreciates beauty and always tells me I'm beautiful.
I find it so odd that so many 'celebrity' women like to say that there is a magical age where they say they no longer feel pressure to conform to fashion, beauty etc. or other stress situations when this is clearly not true. They say they know who they are, but they still actually conform. The difference is they understand the rules and they helped set them. I believe it is a form of one upmanship, so it is useful for all of us women who want to look good/better as we get older to have the advice you are giving.
Hi Francesca thank you for the feedback. This is why I suggest the Pinterest boards as it helps the individual create their own style. Shout if you need any help.
Hi Francesca thank you for the feedback. This is why I suggest the Pinterest boards as it helps the individual create their own style. Shout if you need any help.
Love your ideas for maintaining style without that sad, "I'm trying to look younger " look. Would love to see/hear more ideas for different climates. I live in a climate that is warm and humid year-round (75-85 F. /24-29 C. highs daily), so most "seasonal" advice doesn't apply here. (Sweaters/jumpers and 3-piece suits are not practical options.) Thoughts for variety within the context of a consistently warm (or cool) environment would be great. Thanks so much - Love you and love your work!
My Wonderful Mother taught me as a child to buy Quality over Quantity 😊❤ I am 70 now and know that she was correct - especially now with the plethora of cheap clothing ❤❤❤❤ and I am a Big Fan of “Pre-loved”. And don’t even get me going on the quality of linen ! Of which I am a Big fan !
I agree, fabric/material type (no synthetics - I’m allergic to plastics!) and quality are the most important considerations to me when choosing clothes and accessories. I stopped buying H&M cottons because they’re so cheap they can’t be ironed properly. I can wear and do like plant-fiber based lyocell/viscose/rayon, but quality and thickness are super-important with these fabrics. The thin, cheap ones, like H&M’s, don’t iron well, are limp and pucker like crazy. Nordstrom, and a bit surprisingly, Zara, use good-quality, thicker versions. In high quality, these fabrics substitute well for silk, they share many of its properties like softness, breathability (critical to me!), good “hand” and nice drape. Of course, initially they were called “Artificial Silk”, they were invented to replace precious, hard-to-procure Chinese silk fabrics, which were desperately needed for parachutes, in WWII. Some sharp practitioners still call it “Art Silk”. It’s not silk, though. Only genuine Mulberry Silk is really silk, but some rayons can be very nice. I wear a lot of silk, but the style selection is always very limited in silk clothing. So, if I can’t find what I want in silk, I look for it in rayon/viscose, which is more widely available.
Hi Kimberly, This is great advice and great ideas. I agree silk can be limited, though I find in South East Asia it is quite common. That said that is not helpful if you are the other side of the world!
Hi from an over 50 Australian! Love your channel, especially your recent content, and love your style. As my once coppery red hair gets lighter by the year, it is seriously affecting my relationship with colour, and even small changes to my body make a lot of difference to how I feel in my clothes. It's quite confronting and I've been having a hard time working out where to go with it. I'm finally using Pinterest and find it so useful for helping me think about how I might make changes to my style and rediscover my confidence. Thank you! ❤
Ah I love it when I get messages like this thank you so much. I am glad you are finding it helpful. Yes it really can make a difference. Take your time with it though and embrace it. See it as a new and exciting chapter where you get to start again. I love Australia BTW 😊
69 in Northern California. Really enjoying your advice. I had my waist length very wavy hair chopped in layers a few months ago. The stylist who is my age, told me gray hair makes you look old and tired and so does long hair.🥴 I tried HER way and now I’m done with the wild layered curly style and ready to grow it back out…much easier to style in a braid or up when it’s long! I really love the classic Ralph Lauren style but I can’t spend for the $700 herringbone blazer I adore! I have to wear a lift on one shoe (motorcycle accident at 19). With a 2” difference I cannot wear heels over about 3/4”. Also a large deep unsightly scar on my leg. This limits my clothing choices. I love fall because I can wear skirts and boots! Seems a fair amount of us deal with body issues. Feeling pulled together in spite of our challenges appears to be an overall theme. I look forward to hearing more. ❤
@darrisnelson5223 thank you for your comment and feedback. Yes I like my hair long it’s much harder to manage short as it grows even thicker! Have you looked on Poshmark, EBay or Vinted? I’m not sure if Vinted is in Cali yet. I rarely buy new but look for what I like new then search for it preloved. That way you can get quality at a much better price. Also I live California I have more family there than anywhere else in the world 😊
@@capsuleclosetstylist your hair is healthy and flattering. And mine is the same since it was cut… too thick! In California it’s Poshmark and Ebay. I’ve not heard of Vinted but will research. I too prefer secondhand everything! I live on the Northern CA coast. Would you ever consider an in person event… maybe ‘shop with me’ type of thing? I’d love to hear your take on Rent the Runway or similar sites. Thanks again for your tips!
@darrisnelson5223 It is interesting you should say that because I spoke to a lady recently about doing an in person event in Australia. I am in the UK ut have family all up the coast of Cali so it is possible. I am not sure where you are but some of them are in Seattle and Portland.
@@capsuleclosetstylist You may have to do a 'road show' haha! Seattle is Washington, Portland is Oregon. We too have family in Oregon : ) I am on the Northern California coast about 50 miles north of San Fransisco in Sonoma County. I have been to England but it was nearly 3 decades ago. I would love to go back... it's such a beautiful country!
@mamalovesthebeach437 Apologies for my belated reply to this it some how got missed! Yes I am thinking I might have to - Australia too haha! I am glad you loved the UK.
Comment to promote videos you like, especially with an emoji - they get extra weight with the algorithm to help promote the channel, its videos will be offered to more viewers with similar interests. Here’s my opinion of your channel, Michele❤❤❤Goodness, I love fashion and wardrobe styling! It’s always been one of my principal creative outlets, along with home decor. It’s my feminine antidote to being a physical scientist, there’s more to a woman’s life than math! Or, to be 🇬🇧, I should say maths!
When I was younger we wore our trousers very long, touching the ground. The hems frayed and that was a look. It doesn’t seem frayed hems are a look now, but I see you wear trousers that drag on the ground. How does that work for you?
Hi, I disagree; that is the beauty of building your own capsule wardrobe. You can wear what you want, how you want. I do not like heels, and I like my trousers long. If you don't and you like them shorter with heels, you go for it 😊 Oh, and I am absolutely not walking on them.
Hi Maria, thankyou for your comments I do not do hair unfortunately. However, may i suggest you take a look at Donna May London? She is a friend of mine and does lots of content around hair and make up.
Just watched your video. I'm a 'young' 67 and like to dress fashionably, smart and elegant. The tailored look is more my style (especially when I was working). I wear natural fabrics whenever I can, but two things I struggle with....one, being retired and having a dog, I'm wearing mainly casual clothes. The other problem I have is due to a very painful knee injury (torn medial meniscus) I can't 'walk tall' and with confidence anymore as I'm literally hobbling about. It's very frustrating.
Hi Hilary, thank you for your comment. Bless you that sounds very uncomfortable. I think more than anything it is more of a metaphor for having confidence in yourself. If you are mainly wearing casual options now to hang out with your dog, maybe look at the recent trend of having tailored looking clothes in comfortable stretchy fabrics that feel like casuals. I know that Halara do some. Take a look at them and see if they are for you, if so you can use the code stylist15 for 15% off.
@@capsuleclosetstylist I envy your long, thick hair! It keeps you young IMO. Mine is short and just cannot wear hats well anymore which makes me sad. Thank you for sharing!!
My fashion/wardrobe interests: all-natural fiber fabrics and materials, dresses and skirt outfits year-round, classic, elegant, timeless style in mostly light colors and light neutrals, petite styling (I’m the average US woman’s height of 5’4”, US size 6/8 and 125 lbs. (the average US woman is now a chunky size US 16/UK 20)! Both clothes and accessories, Premium High Street price range, please. US-accessible links. I love to support favorite channels by purchasing through their links, but trying to get to British ones is a nightmare. Plus, many brands don’t stock the same items or colors on their US version websites. I spent ages this morning trying to find something I saw on an influencer from M&S, no joy - very typical experience. Thanks, Michelle
Your usage of “shirt” only is correct, and completely sufficient. I’m American and have to say that many of my fellow Americans know little to nothing about apparel. A shirt is an upper garment that opens in front, saying “button-down” is completely unnecessary. Then, it’s mostly misused anyway, 99% of what are called button-downs aren’t that at all. Button-down only means a particular collar style, one that buttons the collar down onto the shirt front. A “blouse” opens in the back (usually just at the neckline). There is also a tendency here to call a fancier shirt, like a silk one, a “blouse” - but they are still just called shirts! I learned most of this terminology from my Mom as a child, but also from my research, I know what apparel items and style details are properly called. Most were established at least a century ago. Most brands, even US ones, usually get the terminology right, but customers don’t notice this. That’s because designers learn the proper terminology in their training. A few brands keep trying to reinvent the wheel every time, like one (Talbots) calling Polo shirts “Johnny Collars”, apparently a name they just invented. Then there are the Chinese brands, who have no clue. One, Goelia, persists in calling midi skirts “half-skirts”, which makes me laugh as I picture a skirt that only covers either the front of the body or the back! I do use British usage a lot for apparel terms, I say trousers, not pants, and even caught myself saying jumper for sweater! The reason is that the British really standardized tailoring in the early 19th C, so their usage became the worldwide standard through colonization and the size and influence of your daughter country in the 20th, the US. The trickiest apparel term is the US “turtleneck”, some British call these “Polo-necks”, which means something else to us - a knit shirt with a classic, pointed collar with a few, often three, buttons. The Ralph Lauren Polo is the classic example.🙂
This is always really interesting. I agree that the 'button down' part is not necessary. It is like 'waste paper basket' or 'horseback riding' we just call it a 'bin' which we know is for rubbish and 'horse riding' because it is pretty clear which part of the horse you ride! 😂
Good ideas, but I felt slightly disappointed that all the pictures were skinny, mostly young models, with fake grey hair. My body has changed with menopause, even though I eat a pretty clean diet and get more exercise than I did in my 30s. It was nice seeing you in some cool, classic clothes (and your hair is great!) and the dress examples are just like my very favourite dress pattern, which is super flattering and one I have made at least a dozen times, in different colours, and different fabrics. It's my go-to pull-on dress when I want to look pretty and pulled together. Since many of us "over 50s" learned to sew when we were girls, I'll include the pattern number: McCalls 7381.
I’ll have to schedule time to make my own clothes again. I’m an ice hockey goalie and I can’t find any readymade that doesn’t make me look fat. It’s almost impossible to feel comfortable in anything other than workout clothes because of how my shape has changed.
Oh bless you. Making your own clothes is always a great option. If you need more help book in for a consultation with me or check out the blog as there is loads more help there too. capsuleclosetstylist.com/blog/

For years, I would try to match a bottom and top of similar or same fabrics but not bought as a set, and be upset that the color wasn’t an exact match. SO many blacks; SO many navy’s. Then I discovered that if the fabrics were of a different texture, the slight difference in color didn’t matter. If you are trying for a monochrome look and you are buying the pieces separately; then opt for different textures. It looks like a deliberate choice, rather than an unintentional mismatch.
One element that is never, ever, covered in the videos on fashion suggestions: UNATTRACTIVE LEGS. I have not worn a dress since my wedding 40 years ago. Long skirts make me look tubby. My body shape fits best in boxy clothes.
Hi Sam, Thank you for the feedback I will add this to my list of ideas. I am surprised you best fit boxy clothes because that is quite rare. However more importantly it has to feel right on you. 😊
I like the tea dress idea, Ty. I agree and like just about everything you have said, however the white wide leg pants you model are, in my humble opinion, too long and baggy at the bottom. They would drag and get dirty straight away
Hi Jennifer, I have come to realise this is down to personal taste. My trousers don’t drag on the floor but I do indeed like them very long and baggy. If they do not work for you absolutely go for a cut you prefer. 😊
Love your cream flowing trousers but they are too long! Surely they would get filthy and tattered? Personally I love ankle grazers, they look chic and show off both footwear and ankles. Love all the other advice.
Hi Rosemary thank you for your comment. The beauty of building a capsule wardrobe for yourself is that you include what you love. I love my trousers long. I’ve had lots of compliments on them too. I do not like ankle grazers for me as they do not work so well for my height. That’s great they work for you though. This is why it is best to not be swayed away from what works for the individual. I have learnt over the 25 years that I have done this job that we all have different interpretations of style and that is what makes life interesting.
We do need to visit our opticians. I went for my two yearly check to find I had a macula hole leaving me with no central vision in one eye. Use these glasses by all means but Do get your eyes checked. Doing that saved my central vision in the other eye.
I'm an optician in California. Eyeglasses are the most important accessory because they are on one's face. I sell expensive eyewear and have helped women and men improve their style by enhancing their eyewear. It's genuinely transformative; people leave my office feeling more confident. I'm often appalled to see the ill-fitting and styleless frames people wear. We women have a closet full of shoes and one pair of glasses - WRONG! Invest in eyewear! It's the first thing people see when looking at your face! 👓
Fashion advice is very confusing. Here you're suggesting matching belt, bag and shoes which always used to be the advice but other channels are saying thats old fashioned and ages us into frumpy territory 🤔
It can be yes, I would say take the advice that suits you best. In addition check the experience of the person giving you the advice. There are lots of people giving advice based on simply their own personal preference, which is fine but it does not come from a professional background. If you’re not sure ask them. But yes do what works best for you. I suggest it because it pulls an outfit together and makes it look coordinated.
I forget who it was, but he told the New York Rockettes - “Carry Yourself as if your underwear is Made of Gold !!!!! “. Or something to that affect. ❤❤
Hello thank you for your comment. I disagree I think long flowy linen trousers look lovely and I love them. The beauty of having your own style is that you can make decisions about your own wardrobe. In addition you are free to not include them. 😊

It seems we used to be a kinder, more gentle people. Since a political character at the top started being a mean bully, other people have followed his example and abandoned being nice.

Good tips but I have a hard time taking advice seriously from someone whose hair looks like an ol horse’s tail… a hairdresser once told me that at least 85% of women do not wear a becoming hairstyle!

Totally agree it simplifies it and makes it less confusing too.

You are welcome.
This is very true
My entire life I have moved out of the way for people on the sidewalk. Not gonna do it anymore. I'm 67.
Good stand your ground. I walk and look them in the eye.
I love this video so much and it's very helpful to see the little shots of you or demonstrating this type of outfit

Thank you that me sorted watching your video's for the next few weeks. xx

Hi Lori, no problem I will keep that in mind for future content thank you for the feedback
Ah it sounds as if your lovely mother was a wise woman. I totally agree.
@@capsuleclosetstylist That she was 🥰 - with her own beautiful sense of style - until she passed at 85 ❤️🩹

Love this video!
I am so glad you found it helpful. Thank you for the feedback.
I have a skirt made from polysilk - I assumed it was a blend of polyester and silk. Anybody know about this?
It is 100% polyester made light to appear like silk.
@@capsuleclosetstylist thanks! But oh no I thought there was some silk in it 😕
Hi from an over 50 Australian! Thank you!

Thank you Kimberly much appreciated.
Casual chic looks 65 and over please
Thank you for the feedback I will ad that to my notes
When I was younger we wore our trousers very long, touching the ground. The hems frayed and that was a look. It doesn’t seem frayed hems are a look now, but I see you wear trousers that drag on the ground. How does that work for you?
Yes I remember that too. Mine were much longer then. I just like them very long. It is not for everyone, but so far so good I’ve not had any issues.
@@capsuleclosetstylistIMO, slacks that look like you're walking on them do not look 'elegant', they look sloppy.
Those slacks look ill-fitting and sloppy. Why not just wear a shoe with a small heel to elevate your legs with allows the slacks to hang better.
Hi, I disagree; that is the beauty of building your own capsule wardrobe. You can wear what you want, how you want. I do not like heels, and I like my trousers long. If you don't and you like them shorter with heels, you go for it 😊 Oh, and I am absolutely not walking on them.
Would you be able to do some hair styles for women over 75, i will appreciate it thank you ❤
Hi Maria, thankyou for your comments I do not do hair unfortunately.

Ah thank you. I like it long. I am sorry you feel you can not wear hats anymore have you tried different styles?
Noted. I do try to include various UK based and US links, but when there is enough space I will include both.

Hi Susan, Yes the tea dress is a timeless classic for everyone! Thank you for the feedback 😊

Yes exactly this!
One element that is never, ever, covered in the videos on fashion suggestions: UNATTRACTIVE LEGS. I have not worn a dress since my wedding 40 years ago. Long skirts make me look tubby. My body shape fits best in boxy clothes.

Glad you liked it
After age 60: longer dress, longer sleeves. Thats the story, morning glory.
If that works go for it. Feeling your best is the most important thing
Yes I do this regularly as it is in my family.
This is very true
Fashion advice is very confusing. Here you're suggesting matching belt, bag and shoes which always used to be the advice but other channels are saying thats old fashioned and ages us into frumpy territory 🤔
It can be yes, I would say take the advice that suits you best. In addition check the experience of the person giving you the advice. There are lots of people giving advice based on simply their own personal preference, which is fine but it does not come from a professional background. If you’re not sure ask them. But yes do what works best for you. I suggest it because it pulls an outfit together and makes it look coordinated.
Walk as if your underwear is expensive silk and lace.
And get good fitting lingerie

Never could understand why anyone would want to wear someone’s logo geeeeze it’s free advertising to that brand….and where’s your salary lol
I think quality over quantity is always key, but wearing a brand for the sake of it is not.
White pants too long puddling makes legs look big.
