I found your video on a "Change Points Tune Up Ignition Magneto 1959 5.5 HP Johnson" that includes the magneto removal. Also realized the oil wiper clip on my 1958 is missing.
How about a video showing “the rest of the story” ?Most anybody can change a wire .We need to know how to disassemble the mag head and reroute the wires.I recently bought an old Johnson 4 that someone else had worked on nothing is as it’s supposed to be.Your videos are very helpful and put together very well but please finish the job for us.
Question: Can I just put a very small smear of wheel bearing grease on the cam lobe to lubricate the rub block on the points in place of the factory felt pad? This was done routinely in old cars with points for decades. I think it would work fine provided you didn’t over grease.
Probably a stupid question but does the plug order matter? And how deep do the plug wires need to be dug in? I recently replaced the coils in my 5.5 but It seems to only be running on one cylinder,The screw in my coil also made a cracking sound when straightening it as it was bent to the side when it arrived,do you think I could’ve damaged/disconnected it by accident?
@@michaeljsimon just did that and the bottom plug isn’t getting spark, could’ve sworn it was when I first changed the coils though but Im gonna go ahead and take it apart again and mess with the wires and possibly swap them out if I can find replacements
@@michaeljsimon turns out the coil I got off amazon had the wrong sized magnet and wasn’t allowing full spark along with points set wrong,Fixed all that thanks to your videos now my motors running like new,Thanks again mike, your videos have saved me a lot of time and stress, ready for the lake now
Man you are good at rebuilding magneto ignition systems. Did you figure these systems by reading technical papers or at a technical school or maybe another ignition guy. I’m very good on the mechanical part but any thing that uses electricity confuses me. Your stuff always interests me.
@@michaeljsimonIs the base just an appear in my hand? Is it pressed on and require a puller. I just inherited a 1958 5.5 and must replace the plug wires. every video always start with the base in hand, not on shaft. I don't want to apply force till I figure this thing out. It has been 30 years at least since I have seen points.
Invaluable information for a first time boat owner that wants to learn how to do this stuff himself (me) 😂 Thank you!

How do you accurately locate the coils on the reassembly if you don’t have the factory metal spacer ring?
Use a screwdriver to align coil with base

I’m not a big fan of using to much grease - it attracts dust and can do more bad than good - just me ..,.

Did you check for spark with a spark checker ?

How do you know which starter coil is for the top cylinder and watch starter coil is for the bottom cylinder?
Standing in front of motor - the coil closest to you is top coil.
Thank you

I learned from TH-cam videos - I have an electrical background as a telephone man.
I'm still standing in my shop waiting for the magneto to just appear in my hand.
