Robert Palmer did a concert back on Guam, back in the late 80's. In case you didn't know, Guam is a tiny, very tropical island that can be quite humid. He was wearing a double-breasted suit. After his first song, he was drenched!!! The crowd screamed, "Take off your suit!!!" He simply said, "A gentleman NEVER removes his coat!" And finished the concert. For some reason, that STILL sticks with me. So classy...
I saw Robert Palmer in a small venue in Cleveland back in the 90's. The entire audience knew Palmer made fun of people in the crowd that weren't dressed. The entire place was dressed to the 9's. He came on stage in what appeared to be a 10 thousand dollar suit. He had the lights turned on and said we were the best dressed audience he ever played for. A great show.
Really? I never paid to much attention to Robert....I was just trying to see HOW sheer those tops were the models were wearing. I think I'd listen to Pee-Wee Herman recite the phone book, as long as those chicks were wigglin in the background....
He had style but he has competition for that title. Bowie was a snappy dresser. As was Scott Walker and Bryan Ferry. But Charlie Watts has to be the snazziest dresser. Impeccable.
"Dapper" was the exact word Naomi Judd used when describing his attempt to get her to go out with him. She turned him down, but was flattered nonetheless.
Fun fact: The woman on bass, Mak Gilchrist, went on to found a community organisation which plants and promotes urban gardens in public spaces such as bus stops. In 2016 she was made a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
@@tomgeorge7281 She's not a musician, none of these girls are. Robert had them pretend play for the clip. If you look closely they're not really doing shit lol. It's painfully obvious for me when I look at the one on the drums, being a drummer myself 😂
Best Robert Palmer: You Are in My System, I Didn’t Mean to Turn You On, Bad Case of Loving You, and the much earlier Sailing Shoes-Hey Julia-Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley, a trilogy that must be heard together.
Robert had so many good songs, can't believe it's nearly 20 years since he died. Check out his version of "I'll be your baby tonight", which he recorded with UB40 👍🏻
This is an iconic memorable video that is even copied or parodied in the movie, Love Actually. The women were not models or performers - they were secretaries and staffers who were just available.
This song was supposed to be a duet with Chaka Kahn but her record company wouldn't let her do it. So she sang uncredited background vocals and did the arrangement for the song. You gotta check out Tina Turners live version of this song too. Also, he fronted a band called Power Station with members of Chic and Duran Duran. Check out that song Some Like it Hot. Sonically amazing song.
This Song became a Huge Hit in the US as MTV gave it a Big Rotation. This Song, Released in the US in 1986, was almost 6yrs Before “Grunge” started. RIP Robert Palmer. Gone to soon.
As others have said Robert Palmer was very dapper in his dress. But the director of the music video took some inspiration from a popular artist in the 80's called Patrick Nagel who drew and painted women very much like what is shown in the video. The video for Simply Irresistible follows the same artistic direction.
Still, my favorite by Robert Palmer is his Trilogy. Sailin' Shoes, Hey, Julia and Sneakin' with Sally through the Alley." Three songs, one after the other, that just click and show Robert Palmer's Range and Coolness.
Robert Palmer's "Doctor, Doctor" was his best song... it came out as a hit before he'd really crafted an image & style. It was just a great song... You should check it out
This video was SOOOOO famous back in the day. It stayed famous and referenced, long after the song was off the charts. Btw, the shirt and tie look was actually fashion outside of the office too for a while. The preppie look. Que Shania Twain.
The genius of one of England's finest: Robert Palmer. A real blue-eyed soul boy. Every Kind of People and his cover of Marvin Gaye songs Mercy Mercy Me / I Want You are two of my favourites. This song, along with I Didn't Mean to Turn You On and Simply Irresistible was during his raunchy rock period in the 1980s
Good '80s pop rock. Palmer has always been a great dresser, very cool cat. Great jazzy, R&B singing style voice. Good looks for the ladies to look at He and David Bowie similar vibes. lol. The five models in the video are Julie Pankhurst (keyboard), Patty Kelly (guitar), Mak Gilchrist (bass guitar), Julia Bolino (guitar), and Kathy Davies (drums). Mak Gilchrist recalled: "I was 21 and got the part on the strength of my modelling book. We were meant to look and 'act' like showroom mannequins. Director Terence Donovan got us tipsy on a bottle of wine but as we were having our make-up retouched, I lost balance on my heels and knocked the top of my guitar into the back of Robert's head, and his face then hit the microphone."
Loved that song. It's one of those songs that anyone can dance to. Fun fact :they actually hired 5 musicians to line up behind the camera and each girl had her guy to watch so they knew what to do with their hands... So he kind of invented the avatar as well.
This is absolutely one of the best videos of the entire "Golden Age" of MTV. This propelled him -- in the minds of guys everywhere -- to King of Coolness.
I remember when he was Allen Palmer, lead singer of a local band called the Mandrakes. It was obvious he had star quality from the age of 16. The Mandrakes impressed boththe Who and Hendrix when they supported them. They also had a very good lead guitarist called Pete Liley. This was Robert Palmer's first video that took the aethetic of him in a dress shirt and tie surrounded by models. The video was so iconic, it's been done everywhere. If you see 'Love, Actually' there is a scene towards the end where the character of Billy Mack (played by Bill Nighy), an aging rock star is in a video very much like this for his Christmas single...but it's played for laughs. Robert Palmer was one of the few "clothes horses" of rock and roll. In the 80s, he was all about the Italian cut suits (especially Armani). He was one of the best dressed guys in rock. GQ cover guy several times. My favorite Robert Palmer song is "Every Kind Of People". Amazing song!
Ahh memories, a Classic song and video - when this song/video was first released in 1986, my husband was memorised, he'd watch it 24/7 on MTV. We went out for dinner at friend's one night and I appeared in a tight black dress, heals, slick back hair and wearing red lipstick - his only word when he saw me was WOW! That night, I was cooler than cool.
I worked in a hotel in Manchester in the 90s. Palmer stayed there one night when on tour, seemed a nice guy, talked a little to us, also tipped me £100 for carrying his bags to his room.
Big late 80s hit, and yeah the girls aren’t playing the instruments, they’re purely models, but gives a cool look to the video. Nice to see you guys doing the odd video here and there!

He made a trilogy of these videos; Simply Irresistible (the first), Addicted to Love and I Didn't Mean to Turn You On. Some of his classic early work is the bluesy Sneakin Sally through the alley.
