In the US you cannot comprehend just how this blasted the established order. All the media were "shocked & horrified" at this song. The BBC banned it, newspapers vilified it and it became THE song of the middle 80's. I am 69 yrs and I love this tune which to this day will fill a dance floor (with people of a certain age) whenever its played. Relax tee shirts are now in fashion again and their music will always have a lot of Brits telling you "Frankie says RELAX!!"

People today wouldn't believe how popular this song was. World wide It's probably the second biggest hit of the 80s after Thriller. For a couple of years this song was *everywhere* and we couldn't get enough of it. I'm still shocked it has been ignored in all the 80s revival when there's nothing more 80s than Relax.
Not to mention ' Two Tribes ' .. 🤩

'RELAX' was a gigantic, huge mainstream hit in the UK, and in Europe more generally, an actual cultural phenomenon all on it's own. It's still listened to and referenced like almost nothing else from the '80s - I can't stress enough how big a deal this was, and it's still echoing through the years.

I even wore the "Frankie Says Relax" T-Shirt. Laughingly - I danced with my future husband for the first time to this song at my local nightclub. We even made sure it was played at our wedding reception in 1985... we wanted everyone to dance - even my grandma danced to it.
This song was banned from virtually all TV and radio when it was released in the UK. As a result it went straight to No.1 and stayed there for weeks!

They had an alternative video for MTV when the song came out in the early 80’s cause it was such a huge hit. Was also featured in the movie Body Double written by Brian DePalma.
This was a very VERY popular song in the clubs. The dance floor was slammed with everyone when it came on.
This song was a massive hit in the UK and topped the singles chart for a few weeks, even though the biggest national radio station banned it due to its' spicy lyrics. The video was controversial at the time (mid 80s) and was specifically made to get people talking about the band. Their follow up single, "Two tribes", is less explicitly sexual but .equally catchy.
Of course all the kids at my school bought it, and we all sang it at the top of our voices!

This song actually hit number 1 on top 40 while also being actively banned at the same time. The full music video had to wait over a decade to be seen as the video had been more heavily banned than the song.

I loved Lex's reaction to this!! I walked through a crowd of guys dressed very similar to the costumes in this video around 3 AM lots of years ago in the course of a job I had at the time. It was outside a club called "The Anvil" in Manhattan. Leather, hairy chests, muscles, facial hair, the works. Some of them were making comments directed at me, but they didn't bother me physically. I found out that night what it feels like to be a pretty woman walking past a construction site at lunch time LOL.
Banned on the TV and radio in the UK back in 1983. It was no. 1 for 5 weeks. The video for their second single was also banned from the airwaves. The song Two Tribes was no. 1 for 9 weeks. Relax climbed the charts again to sit at the no. 2 spot. The first time an act had the number one and two slots in the UK charts since the Beatles. Frankie were from Liverpool too. Their third single also hit no. 1.

@@jmag579 The BBC banned it for the lyrics - the video came later. Not surprisingly this had the reverse effect of everyone wanting to buy it to see what the fuss was. Other stations still played it anyway, so the ban became an embarrassment to the BBC, especially when the song stayed at number 1 for five weeks but was banned from the BBC's flagship music show 'Top of the Pops'.
@@jmag579 it took them a while, but they finally worked out what the lyrics were about. Banning it made it even more popular, and the cool kids were all listening to pirate radio that summer anyway.

I am Jurassic, this song was everywhere in Seattle. I didn’t have the slightest clue as to what the song was about and we were banned from watching MTV back then so I never got the inferences that took place in the video.
In school the “Frankie said RELAX” t-shirts were everywhere, when the “Frankie says use a condom” t-shirts popped up the King County school district banned all of the ‘Frankie’ t-shirts by that Friday.
At the time I didn’t even know what a condom was. I asked my mom at dinner and was immediately remanded to my room, small blessing as it was the dreaded ‘liver’ night.

'Two Tribes' would be a good reaction, also. 'The Power of Love' (a Christmas No.1 in the UK, keeping Bandaid of top spot) is, in my opinion, FGTH's finest hour, and a TOTALLY different type of song. Quite beautiful, in fact.
Holly Johnson, the lead singer, also did a solo song that might interest you guys, 'Americanos'.
Sorry but no. The Power of Love went to No. 1 the week before Christmas- making FGTH the 1st band since Gerry and the Pacemakers to have their 1st 3 singles hit number 1, but then Band Aid was released and that went straight in at No. 1 for the Christmas charts.
This reaction was great, Lex got the vibe and with Brad you could almost hear the gears moving inside his head trying to compute what he was watching and hearing. Was a massive hit here in the UK and spawned a whole fashion for Frankie says relax tee shirts. Great fun .
This was followed up with "Two Tribes" which was a massive hit. "Welcome to the Pleasure Dome" and their cover of "Born to Run" are stand out tracks from their first album. Well worth checking out.

I was big into heavy metal when this song came out. So why did I love it so much? Why did I always get on the dance floor at work/office events when the DJ played this? Because the beat is fantastic. Classic 80s song, was huge in the UK.

So, there are several videos for this song. This was the OG. Then there is a slightly edited version of this video, editing out some of the more "controversial" parts. Next there is the most well known "green laser" version that was made for more mainstream audiences. There also is a segment of the movie Body Double where they perform the song on the set of a movie (within the movie itself!) So as a 12 year kid, I had NO IDEA what this song was about and loved how everyone had the Frankie Say ‘Relax’ shirts. Looking back, was probably wise not to buy one myself. Didn’t want to give the wrong impression to anyone….not there’s anything wronng with that!

One of the best mixes I've heard in decades ....a true masterpiece covering all instruments and voices. I still use that mix as reference for my music productions in these days. If you think that this song goes back for some 40 years you might understandhow great that was in its debut days.

Lots of people also bought the T-Shirt saying ‘Relax’ on it in one of the fashion trends of the year. Eventually, the BBC did ‘relax’ and dropped the ban by the end of the year.
Frankie Goes To Hollywood, a Liverpudlian band, also released Two Tribes and The Power of Love the same year, and all three records reached No.1, which was the first band to achieve this accolade with their debut recordings since Gerry and the Pacemakers (also from Liverpool). Unfortunately, the didn’t last much longer with an album and single release of Welcome to the Pleasuredome the following year, and then a break up of the band.
Obviously, the song is something of a gay anthem, but it's hypnotic baseline and beat made it an instant success in nightclubs also. The controversy merely amplified its notoriety and sales.
