Oh my. This band spawned so much music in the 80s and 90s, it's scary. First you had Bobby Brown (husband of Whitney Houston), who had a huge solo career. Then you had Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant, who also had a string of solo hits. The other three - Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe, formed Bell Biv DeVoe. They were just kids here, with their whole lives ahead of them. Other classics include "Candy Girl", "Mr. Telephone Man", "Count Me Out", and "If It Isn't Love".

New Edition is such a talented group. Many hits as a group and then more outside the group with Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, and Ralph Tresvant doing solo projects and the remaining three members forming a separate group, Bell Biv DeVoe. NE performed on the American Music Awards a couple weeks ago with New Kids On The Block. It was the performance of the night. Hope to see more New Edition reactions from RSR, including some after their voices have matured more.

Oh my, didn't know you guys didn't know them. That opens a DEEP rabbit hole of hits. The group probably had at least a dozen, then the solo hits from Ralph (who sang lead on this one), Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill and BBD. Altogether you're looking at 25-30 hit songs at least. As New Edition other great songs of theirs from this age period are Mr Telephone Man, Candy Girl, Count Me Out. Then Bobby leaves the group and goes solo and they replace him with Johnny Gill and about 3-4 years later put out the magnificent Heartbreak record with If It Isn't Love, Can You Stand The Rain and the amazing Boys to Men, which is where the 90s group got their name.

  • @ronnix23
    @ronnix23 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

In this video they’re probably about 15 years old. I would recommend If It Isn’t Love in which they were a little bit older and their voices had matured. This group probably spawned more successful acts than any group I can think of. Bobby Brown was the first to go solo and he became a mega star. Ralph Tresvant, the lead singer also went solo and did well. Johnny Gill who replaced Bobby Brown in the group also had a couple of huge hits as a solo artist after joining New Edition. And then of course there are the remaining three members who formed Bell Biv Devoe after everyone else went solo and they blew up. Then after that time apart they all rejoined together under the New Edition moniker and it was like the super friends of R&B reuniting to save music. I really hope you listen to all of these acts, together and individually.

Their later hits as a group are some of the best R&B you'll ever hear. "Can You Stand the Rain" "If It Isn't Love" and "Boys to Men" are classics. Adding Johnny Gil after Bobby Brown left, gave the group a deep soulful voice which elevates these 3 songs into legend. Bobby Brown's solo LP turned him into a phenom when it came out. "Every Little Step" "My Perogrative" "Roni" "Rock Wit'cha" and "Don't Be Cruel" all reached the top 10 and came from the same album. 3 other members, Michael Bivens, Ricky Bell and Ronnie DeVoe formed a group called Bell Biv DeVoe and had 2 hits "Poison" and "Do Me!" reach #3 on the billboard charts. Johnny Gil had a bunch of solo hits. "My, My, My" and "Rub You the Right Way" are his most popular.

"Bubble gum Pop" is what early New Edition was labeled as. They evolved into a R&B, New Jack Swing style as they got older. Other than the Jackson 5 they're by far the best boy group ever, imo. They actually should've been even bigger than they were but internal conflict with management and group members kept them from reaching their full potential.

New Edition is a mega group with a career spanning 40 plus years and still going. They are Iconic and you can't just say that about other groups. They started as preteens in 1983 and here it is soon to be 2022 and the have a new album coming out. What makes them so great is as the original lineup with Bobby Brown they were big, without Bobby, that still were big. When Johnny Gill joined the group they were more mature and still big, Bobby went solo and he was massive. Then Johnny Gill (who was originally solo) and Ralph went solo they were big and the 3 remaining members formed a trio called BBD (Bell Biv DeVoe) and they were massive too. Then the got back together with Bobby back in the group and now it's a six member group instead of 5 and are never lost a step. How many groups can say they are big as a group and each member of the group was big separate from the group?

Brown left the group in 1985 for solo career before Johnny Gill joining group in 1987. Gill & Tresvant left group in 90s for solo careers, leaving the remaining 3 members to form group, in early 90s, known as 'BELL BIV DEVOE.

New Edition (Ralph Tresvant, Ricky Bell, Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe...Johnny Gill would join the group in 1987 taking Bobby's spot) first came out with Candy Girl in 1983 as 14-15 year olds. This song was a year later as 15-16 year olds. Their NE Heartbreak album of 1988 is a more mature sounding NE. You should watch The New Edition Story and Bobby Brown Story (B.E.T.) one day. Some good songs from their younger days are: Is This The End, Candy Girl, Popcorn Love, Jealous Girl, Mr Telephone Man, Lost In Love, My Secret (Didja Get It Yet), Leaving You Again, A Little Bit Of Love, Maryann, Count Me Out, Kickback, Sweet Thing, Who Do You Trust, Tonight's Your Night, Delicious & Let's Be Friends. Some good songs from their older yeears are: Can You Stand The Rain, If It Isn't Love, (Sorry) You're Not My Kind of Girl, Boys To Men, One More Day, I'm Still In Love With You, Hit Me Off, NE Heartbreak, Crucial, Superlady, I'm Comin' Home, Hear Me Out, Something About You, Oh Yeah It Feels So Good, How Do You Like You Love Served, Newness, Home Again, Re-Write The Memories. The group members also had success outside of the group as Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant & Johnny Gill had platinum solo careers full of hits. While Bell Biv DeVoe (BBD) ushered in the whole R&B/Rap phase on songs in the music industry with their Poison album in 1990. Bobby Brown was married to Whitney Houston as well. They made it big time for some guys that started out in the Roxbury/Cathedral public housing projects located in Boston (Johnny is from Washington, DC).

@@breebree9319 That would be a good choice too. Anything that showcases their voices I'm all for. Plus you get a little splash of Brian McKnight in that one too. :)

Ralph Tresvant was the lead singer! We girls of the eighties loved his voice! This was early New Edition and definitely early puberty voices! The rap break’s were nice and set them apart from most of the boys bands of the day that followed their popularity and tried to be the next NE who frankly was patterned after the Jackson 5!❤❤

I'm surprised you never heard of them before, probably the most famous if not one of the most famous boy bands ever. The lead singer is Ralph tresvant n u also have Ricky Bell, Michael Bivens n Ronnie Devoe from bel biv Devoe. We can't forget Bobby Brown was in this group as well. Bobby was replaced later on by Johnny Gill n later they were all in the group together. Check out " if it isn't love" " still in love" " can u stand the rain" or another one with them as kids was "Mr telephone man". So many more songs I could be here for awhile lol.

I was 11 in 83 when I got this Album! I had a nice stereo system from Santa. 🎅 It had a turntable, 8-track, cassette deck & am/FM. Me & my friends made up dance routines to the entire album! 😂
And at the skating rink jam!!!
So glad I grew up when I did.
    Love y'alls reactions!

The reason they are compared to the Jackson 5 so much is because they were young and they looked up to them as idols and patterned. The Jackson 5 was the blueprint for groups back then. Yall need to listen to them now. They have outstanding choreography and stage presence. Check out "You're Not My Kind of Girl" music video. They have lots of others as well.

Wow, I can't believe you guys have never heard of New Edition! Ralph's voice sounds the way it sounds on this track because he was a teenager and his voice hadn't changed yet. "Coo It Now" was from their second album. Their first album (Candy Girl) had three number one hits and they weren't even teenagers. A number one rated miniseries of their lives was made and broadcasted on BET. Because of them, you got groups such as "Boys II Men", "Backstreet Boys", "New Kids On The Block", "Another Bad Creation", "N'Sync", etc...these guys are legends! The group has been together since 1978 and is still performing concerts. Come take a journey down the rabbit hole known as "The New Edition"...trust me, you will not be sorry!!

You guys have no idea of what a deep well of music you've just opened!!!!!!! New Edition leads to so many other acts, all within that one group. You have New Edition, Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, Ralph Trevant, and BBD (which stands for Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, and Ronnie DeVoe.) That is just the acts directly from NE. Then you have two more acts credited to members of NE; ABC which stands for Another Bad Creation and one of most successful boy bands ever produced BOYZ II MEN!

New Edition was based out of Boston and were trying to become the new edition of the Jackson 5. There is a common factor between New Edition and New Kids on the Block, aside from being from the same area. They were both discovered by the same guy, Maurice Starr. Bobby Brown was the main breakout star of the group in the 80s and early 90s, this would be the same guy who married Whitney Houston. Three of the guys would form a group in the early 90s called Bell Biv Devoe, who's biggest hit was Poison. And one of those guys helped discover Boyz II Men. Plenty of talent all coming from this group.
