  • Samsung’s 2024 flagship Android phone brings a host of small improvements that keep the Galaxy S24 Ultra at the top of the heap. Thanks to our video’s sponsor ESR Cases, use 10% off Code JHFKKD6V valid until March 31, 2024 amz.run/7dmi . The S24 Ultra has a flat 2600 nit OLED display, a titanium frame, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and a new 50MP 5x tele camera. It retains hallmark features like the S Pen in a silo, huge display, 4 rear cameras, long battery life and now comes with 7 years of software updates.

It does have the added benefit of having a higher resale value. If you use your phone for 4 years and then sell it, people would still be okay buying it and using it for another 3/4 years because it would still be supported. It's one of the reasons why iPhones retain their high resale value

These smartphones are really strong and have great hardware. We aren't advancing as fast as we used to do in the early days of smartphones. If you look at smartphones like PCS then we can see that we don't need to upgrade that often. Also OS upgrades are mostly just user interface changes. It doesn't feel like the drastic changes of newer OS of yesteryears.

I'm still on my Samsung S10+. I use the headphone jack and microSD card. The new phones have neither plus unless I get the Ultra, the screen resolution is lower. I read books on my phone. Samsung has yet to offer a reason for me to "upgrade."

    • @ngroy8636

I understand the argument for lower resolution. Such as tradeoff for battery life, brightness, cost and refresh rate. But I can't get over the feeling that getting a new expensive phone is more of a downgrade. My S9+ is perfectly fine, besides the camera or OS updates, there is really no reason for me to get a new phone.

I apologize if I missed it, but I didn’t catch u mentioning that this the first cellphone licensed in the USA with a Qualcomm x75 modem, that thing which gives it all current radio frequency bands and carrier aggregation. Not one youtube reviewer I’ve seen has mentioned that or that this Samsung is the very first to have dual eSIM capability, something important to some of us. iPhones and Pixels have this feature.
You’re technically more knowledgeable than many reviewers on here, so please try to include mention of other facets of new phones, not just the “sexy” stuff, like cameras & AI. Those are very well-covered by others.

The S24U is a sideways upgrade despite some rave reviews. The AI is coming to the S23U so not really an upgrade, and the chip is so far in real-life use (forget benchmarks) is maybe hotter and less performant (FPS) than the much more optimised S23U. The new 5X camera may be a downgrade for some. I never once complained about the S23U brightness so for the extra nits is not a selling point.
The only de facto upgrade for me is the flat display, as I hate the form-over-function curved displays. I upgraded for that and because of the deals. With the trade-in, and deals it cost me a net £30!

The 3.5 mm jack is, sadly, gone (but not forgotten) for good, at least on phones & tablets. These OEMs make too much $$ on Bluetooth earbuds for them to ever go back.
You can still use a dongle to connect wired buds/headphones, with the compromise of then having to charge wirelessly (save a dongle with a dual/split solution).
Perhaps if enough of us publicly pressure Samsung, there's a chance the micro-SD slot could return to their phones (thankfully the Galaxy S Tabs still retain it).

My concern with that ESR case kickstand is that if it's anything like the kickstand case samsung had for the galaxy note 9, then in time, that kickstand will eventually come loose and just stop working. Sure if it pops out on a drop or something you can just clip it back in, but eventually, it will just no longer clip back on securely, which sucks.

Regarding the camera comparisons, we tend to forget that the s22 and s23 ultras have had several updates vs the s24 ultra that has had none. If the s24U's camera, without firmware, is at least as good as the s23 Ultra with, you have to assume that the s24U will be the better camera phone as the weeks/months go by.

The sound is what got to me. Far inferior to my old Note 9. I returned it. First I called Samsung and Verizon. They were useless. Told me to make sure my volume control was turned up. When I brought it back to the Verizon store where I got it the man told me that people haven't been complaining because they have become used to bad sound. He said the last phones that Samsung made with good sound was the Note 9 (mine) and 10. He said that the only company still making phones where phone calls sound good (I'm weird, I use my phone primarily as a phone!) is the Sony, but Sony doesn't sell their phones in the US. Too bad, because, like my N9, Sonys still have earphone jacks and memory cards. Well, I'll stick with my Note 9 as long as I can.

The Note 20 Ultra was a great phone with speakers that sounded louder & more rich than my S22 Ultra; I nearly pulled the trigger on it, but I felt it was a bit "top heavy" for my taste in one-handed use. I wound up getting the Tab S7 Plus instead.

    1. I hope no one you love is affected by those increased maternal mortality rates. The news out of Texas is scary.
    2. I really don't care about those synthetic benchmarks. I don't game, I don't edit video, so I'm simply never going to need massive performance ratings on the CPU or GPU. Sometimes those performance boosts mean better battery life for those of us who use phones normally, and I care about that.
    3. I really don't care about these AI features, especially given that Samsung will likely charge a subscription for them after 2025. I'm upgrading Verizon relatives to the S24 line solely because their phones are getting really old.
    4. 7 years of firmware updates sounds really good, especially since my brother is among those getting a new phone, and he tends to hold on to phones for pretty much forever.

Lisa, out of curiosity have you tried playing around with the vivid vs standard mode for the display? There's a recent video floating out there comparing the changes between the two and there doesn't seem to be any difference, but on previous phones it's a significant difference.
I wonder if it's some kind of issue that only affects certain units.

There seems to be a bug in the software build number that hopefully would get ironed out soon in regards to this issue. Here is a video explaining things in more detail: th-cam.com/video/rSkhC4AGhxg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=TRqhoFm9n_v38jqB
People seem to think it is the new anti-reflective coating causing this issue, however the video I linked explains that it is a software issue rather than a hardware one

  • @NM-vw6xq
    @NM-vw6xq 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Im still waiting to hear about the massive changes (sans all the AI bs) that warrants spending this much to upgrade from an already very capable S22 or S23 ultra (hell even the S21 ultra). All reviewers seem to rave about this phone and I still cant justify it. Its essentially a pixel now with a Samsung name + one UI. And no I am not an apple fan boy, I own a S22 ultra and probably will not upgrade til I see more than incremental upgrades. I need something more than a minor bump in processor and screen brightness and software gimmicks to spend so much. Ppl need to stop buying these (and buying into all the AI marketing) so it forces Samsung (and other companies) to actually innovate again.

I totally disagree with you on the display. Regardless of display "over saturation" on previous models, the S24 goes so far the other way, it's laughable. It looks like an LED panel versus an AMOLED panel. It's been mentioned by other reviewers that the inky blacks on some pages that have been truly jet black, are now a really dark gray, so how does that equate to energy efficientcy, considering now the entire display is lighting up? Like everything else, I'll get used to it, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. You did a good review, but you lost me about the display quality.
