  • If you have or had a grandfather/grandmother or father/mother who served in World War II and you wondered why he or she never talked about the war, this is why. Charles Durning was only one of 16 plus million who served and when asked to speak about his tour of duty he would only say "Why....do you want to see me cry?" Finally, in 2004, he spoke. Listen carefully to his words and watch his emotions. War affects each and everyone of our service men and women and their families deeply for the rest of their lives. Remember this when you meet a vet no matter where or when he/she served. Honor them, thank them and most of all "Remember".
This is an excerpt from the National Memorial Day Concert that was aired last night. I used my camcorder to capture this portion of the show that is why it sounds like television. No copyright intended. I do not own any of this footage. All rights belong to KERA Public Television.

My Grandfather was a Veteran of World War II. He was a Canadian member of The American/Canadian First Special Service Force and saw action in The Alutieans in the Pacific , Southern France and Italy. The Greatest Generation. Mr. Durning from a Canadian to an American thank you for your service. 🇨🇦🇺🇸

In all the years of watching Charles Durning in movies I did not realize how brave he was.
I watched him speak of landing on the beach with group. I closed my eyes the second time upon listening him describe the landing. And how all the soldiers who landed were so brave under constant fire.
We are all blessed around the world for their valour.

it reminds me of the clip of ww1 veteran, harry patch. at the age of 109, he went to paschendale in belgium. he hadn't been there in 90 years. and you could still see how much being there and fighting there and what he had endured still haunted him.

that is good to know. Unfortunately, with the time difference in Europe, it does not matter much. That is why it nshould be archived, at least for a few days.

YOu know, it is amazing, God has been cast out of the schools and prayer is not allowed, nor any mention of religion in schools, but how much of the music at the NATIONAL memorial day concert has to do with God and heaven, the music our country turns to for comfort. Sh..........don´t tell the Libertarians and Atheists. Praise God!
