Actor Charles Durning dead at 89

The actor Charles Durning died at his home in New York at the age of 89. CBS News' Jim Axelrod reports on the man known as the "king of character actors" and appeared in more than 100 movies over his 50-year career.

He's my grandfather's cousin. My last name is Durning. I never got to meet him, but I would have loved to.

Mr. Durning was the coolest guy you'd ever want to meet. I met him at The Raindancer restaurant in Fort Lauderdale about 25 years ago. He talked with me forever. He was sharp as a whip. Some guy wanted to take his picture. The guy said "on three." So the guy says "ONE.......TWO.......and then he quickly took the picture. Durning didn't miss a beat and said "WHAT HAPPENED TO THREE?"

He was also in the 1997 Canadian dark Comedy-Drama movie, The Secret Life of Algernon and he was also known for doing the voice of Francis Griffin, Peter's father on Family Guy in 2000, 2005, 2007, and 2009

One of the best episodes of NCIS had Durning playing a Medal of Honor recipient who wanted to turn himself in for killing another marine on Iwo Jima. Such a great actor.

I recently saw Siskel and Ebert If We Picked the Winners 1983, the year of Durning's Oscar Nod for To Be or Not to Be, both Siskel and Ebert (especially Siskel) thought Durning's nomination was the worst of that year, and they would rather see that slot go to any of the actors from the Right Stuff or Jeff Daniels for Terms of Endearment (the fact that they really knew of Daniels talent that early in only his second major film amazes me in a good way).
