- Today we'll be talking about the Raider Class Corvette - a nice imperial ship with some cool backstory, but one which was ultimately improperly used by the Empire. That and more for today's Star Wars video!

The Raider’s sudden change I think is just representative of how it feels like the campaign of Battlefront II is missing a middle section of the story.
To be fair, BF2's campaign does have a somewhat big time skip.
@@anzaca1 but it's not THAT obvious that the time skip was that big
@@anzaca1 well, the Time Skip is the missing middle section or scene where they could say, got hit pretty hard and had to do some repairs with some CR-90 Parts and make some upgrade while they at it.
i mean, two logical options would be, they had to cut 1-2 Missions or the designers thought it would be fun to have a new Republican Version of the Raider, but it misses an explanation of the how or why.
But the design is quite thoughtfull and makes sense if you think about it: they changed the engines and Solar Panels with some Spare parts that looks like some CR-90 engines because the Rebellion//Republic did not had that much OEM Parts for an Raider Class Corvette
They probably wanted to sell that section as DLC or something lame.
Or that fact that was hinted at by a DICE employee, that the campaign was originally almost entirely Imperial, but as the story development neared completion, Disney popped in and said the game had to be about "the good guys" so the story had to be hastily rewritten.
The raider to be honest could've been a great patrol craft type ship for the more "remote" regions of the empire
@@miniaturejayhawk8702 not to mention CR-92 Modified Corvettes.
It would go great with other “remote” patrol ships like Venators and especially the mighty Praetors. Those guys would be big enough to CARRY raiders lol. And on that subject, why didn’t every ISD have a CR90 in its belly? It would make for great recon and anti fighter support. Two things the TIE fighter often struggles with. And we know you can fit at least one. The first three minutes of A New Hope make that clear and yet we never see it again.
@@starcaller6448 well instead of storing the cr90 you know you could... use it as a escort
@@starcaller6448 Imagine an Imperial Venator with a Raider in its ventral hangar bay and a full complement of Tie and transports. Due to how easy they are to transport, the Venator could carry nearly 600 Ties (50 squadrons)
@@darthball2723 Well, you would. You’d just be carrying your escort with you. You don’t need it all the time so you launch it like a fighter and it can be launched fast. Plus when you know you need it it can jump with you just like a rebel starfighter. The basic idea is to gurentee you’ve got a Star destroyer escort while greatly extending the range and service like of said escort due to keeping it in hanger most of the time.
The Raider with some TIE Defenders feels like a miniboss in a star wars campaign.
Funny in my X4 Starwars Interworlds playthrough i use raiders with a compliment of 6 defenders frequently
@@Ronin.97sadly you can't have a hangar in the Raider, otherwise it would literally be the best ship in the whole mod lmao
@@Eggmayor Ikr that would be amazing. The one downside. Luckily the fighters can keep up well enough with the raider if they all stay in sector. Normally just used them as QRF and police/patrol.
Loved the Raider. Neat design, fit the aesthetic of the Empire without feeling too forced. Curious what a commander like Thrawn could have done with a small battlegroup of these. Even outside of direct combat engagements, this would have been a great patrol craft for the outer regions or even some of the core worlds. Maybe even some variations (strip the hangar and replace it with light broadside capabilities or ass some more forward mounted weaponry. A few ion cannons would have made this a great craft for chasing down and dealing with freighters and frigates, and it would be well defended against possible fighter attacks.
its not a good strategy but i have a pincer stratgy with the raiders and some other ships
phase 1: 2 interidctor cruiser retreat behind an ISD 1 and draw out the rebel fleet
phase 2: a fleet of raiders jumps oit of hyperspace behind the rebel fleet and launches fighters
phase 3: the destroyers and cruisers launch fighters some protect the defense fleet the rest enage the rebel fleet
phase 4: whit the TIEs from the raider fleet protecting the raider fleet the raiders outmanuver the rebel ships and cause chaos
phase 5: as the rebel fleet falls apart the remaining sjips are hunted down and defeated
@@Voidsterrr seems lika pretty good strategy.
Thrawn would treat it like his own Chiss warships. Always rotating, always moving to avoid getting hit.
Personally i always liked the idea of smaller ships that are somewhat overpowered for their own good. I can imagine that the designers of this ship had a look at the USS Defiant from Deep Space Nine and went like "Star Wars should have something like that". And they even added some extra functionality since the Raider could carry fighters. In any case i like this ship, if only it could've been used in Squadrons the way they used it in Battlefront.
This is just awesome ship. I love the idea of small team operating independently and this was the perfect ship for that.
6:17 I'd love to see you talk about that Stealth Transport ship the Republic uses in TCW. That whole submarine-esque feel to it is really interesting.
Yeah it really was a cool couple of episodes. Wish they’d returned to it tbh
@@spacecat7377 Yeah, but then it would've become less special. Would've made for a great hero ship, though.
The carrion spike..basically Tarkins personal ship
Would love to see a video about either the assault gunboat or the missile boat! Two great assault fighters from the Empire that are rarely talked about
I'd love if Eck would talk about the Tartan Patrol Cruiser

Skipray is another great one to talk about!
I genuinely really like design of the ship. Looks like something that could be made not to far in the future
The Raider is the next ship I'm getting for my Imperial fleet in Star Wars: Armada, purely due to how cool it looks (the rules for it are good as well, but mainly it's just for the looks)
Sticking overload pulse on those things is always good for a laugh (when it works lol)
I LOVE the raider design! It looks so good and I imaging it would work really well in a real fleet
Me personally, I always have a love for the VT49, a ship that definitely doesn't get used enough.
I think it's because I have played a LOT of space sims over the years, but the SWG VT49 was the first ship I "owned" that I could decorate any way I wanted...
Extra seats in the bridge (including a captain's chair), an ops center, living quarters for the crew in the main hold the captain's quarters forward and some spare parts and cargo space in the engine room.
Great little ship!
You could get into the Storm Commandos and their lore. I always thought that Inferno Squad and their loadout was based off of their existence in Legends.
Mainly because Palpatine was compensating.
That is why he hated lightsabers, because his was very "weak" in the force. 😁
I actually have an X-Wing Minis Raider. It makes a great centerpiece to my Imperial ships. Photos of the thing don't do it justice, it's MASSIVE.
Regarding the confusion regarding it being a "Legends" ship, X-Wing Miniatures is known for bringing back a LOT of Legends ships like the various TIE variants, the K-Wing, etc. Additionally, X-Wing Miniatures specific content (what little there is of it, anyway) is specifically stated to be non-canon, so while the Raider was never a Legends ship, it did originally fall under the same category as far as canon is concerned.
I don't believe that it doesn't have a reactor, it kinda needs one since even the TIEs had small ones, but it definitely doesn't need nearly as big of one, and can probably cruise under solar power alone. That would give it effectively infinite range within a star system.
As for the hangar on the Raider II, I think it's really just a service hangar just like on the CR-90, designed to accept small shuttles, personal craft, and the like. It's really not big enough for proper carrier duty, at least with manned fighters. Now, if the Empire decided to bring Vultures back into service, that's another story.
I myself would like to find a 1st Ed. Raider mini to complement my CR-90. Its definitely a missing spot in my X-Wing 1st Ed. mini game collection for my Imps
If you want Droid fighters, why not ask for the TIE/D fighters from Legends
@@joshuaaxford516
I mentioned the vultures specifically due to their compact size and self-sufficient design. TIE Drones are still TIE-sized for the most part, they have smaller panels but their overall footprint is the same, plus they require all of the normal TIE support systems which takes up hangar space.
@@VestedUTuber vultures must've been self-sufficient in canon. In Legends, they were one of the worst fighters fuel wise, using a chemical fuel. It's why they were only armed with blaster cannons
@@joshuaaxford516 By "self-sufficient" I mean that they can take off, land, and receive service without the need for support equipment. Vultures have always had a short range but you could literally stick them on the outside of a ship's hull and still be able to launch, retrieve and refuel them without much issue. Whereas most TIE variants require a launch/retrieval gantry.
A small task force consisting of a Lancer, a couple of Raiders, and a Nebulon with attendant fighters would be an ideal Imperial anti-pirate task force. It's pretty much the same tactic I like to use in EAW; herd fighters into a killing zone near a larger ship with the corvettes, then drop in the heavy anti-fighter frigate directly behind them.
I could see these things being modded into a badass ship for a pirate or something
That ending always puts a smile on my face.
I know your specialty is Ships, but I'd love an in depth look at the B2 Super Battle droid, including their creation process/cost, effectiveness, and how they were used after the Empire rose to power. I know a bunch of CIS stuff got scrapped but I remember somewhere the B2 got repurposed by some powerful governments as body guards and the like. IDK why the B2 has just always been a super cool droid to me. And a second vid I'd love is an in-depth look at Jango Fett's gear he used. I feel he gets over looked too much because of Boba, but I guess that's understandable.
I'd love to see more videos about how Star Wars multimedia has evolved over the years from cooperation (Or lack there off) with authors and how it all mixed and matched together.
Eck, if you need a video idea, could you do an in depth cover on the Saboath mercenaries amd their fleet(s)? They range from statfighter squadrons, destroyer-type heavy starfighters, frigates, tugs, missile deployers, bombers, and even their own destroyer-clsss capitol ships. I have always wanted to see something about them ever since i've played SW: Jedi Starfighter
I would like to see you cover the Strike class medium cruiser.
I really like the Corvus redesign after it joined the New Republic.
I love the Raider, she such a cool nippy looking little ship. I love that her weapons can retract into the hull rather than just hanging out waiting for someone to blow them up. I want the Bad Batch to steal one and fly around in it.
Little late in the timeline for the Bad Batch, at least without a decade or so time skip.
@@boobah5643, maybe they steal the prototype. Navy ships typically undergo years of testing.
Raider I class technically has has 6 double heavy lasercannons, 4 double (light) turbolasers, and a chin mounted ion cannon. (I believe two turbolasers are chin mounted and the other two are on each side. We see in game a quad array on each side. Maybe its a configurable ship, like correlian cr90's or cr92a's).
Raider II corvette just swaps turbolasrs for concusion missles and cluster warheads for starfighters. Better for starfighter screening, but seriously lacks anti capital ship weapons.
My personal head cannon is that the corvus was a modified raider that traded weaponry and reactor space for hanger space and an improved sensor array. Again just me, but i would say an unmodified raider has an additional 2 or 3 double laser cannons on the underside, truly making it a starfighter killing machine. This would eliminate the blind spot under the corvette. And with 4 twin light turbolasers, it matches the firepower of even some cr 90 configurations. I know some people think the raider is under armed, and that may be true for the raider II, but the raider I has 4 twin turbolasers in addition to and ion cannon and 6 heavy laser cannons, which can still pack a punch against enemy Corvettes.
The Raider reminds me a lot of the Elite Dangerous Federal Corvette
I fell in love with this when I first laid eyes on it and easily became my favorite Star Wars ship of all time
Eck, I’m surprised you never got into Star Wars Armada table top. Love the fleet building aspect and at the very least the miniatures look great on display. Biggest downside is that they’re not cheap.
Indeed. I had come across a Super Star Destroyer for Armada at my gaming store. DAYUM that thing is big. And costly, at I think 240$ ? if my poor memory is correct
Armada is such a fun game once you get the rules down too. The miniatures look great as well. Just wish they released expansions more than once a year. The SSD is definitely the prize of my collection though.
I adoooore the Raider. That and the Imperial Light Cruiser are my two favorite Imperial ships.
You mean the arquitens right?
@@daltonsherrod1573 better not be the 546
I hope you do some videos on the the ships of the Ssi Ruuk, Yevetha and Killiks. Break up the Imp Reb stranglehold.
The Ssi Ruuk only had a couple of ships really. For the Yevethans, I have covered the Black fleet, including their thrustships before. I'll do Killiks after my next re-read of Swarm War, but they also only had a couple ship types.
@@EckhartsLadder reread the Swarm War? You've my sympathies on that.
Do an alligence star destroyer! Also it think the raider if it was a bit bigger it could carry a few fighters witch would help it a lot.
Would you consider a video or series of videos covering the Lightsaber Combat forms?
The strengths and drawbacks of them, their prominent uses and users, other history about them?
I would love a video about the arquetens. Probably my favorite ship design along side the raider.
You could make a video about the First Order Tie Whisper. A “modified Tie Advanced” that appears to have been created for the sole purpose of providing a cool scene for the Episode IX trailer even though it makes no sense and then was never seen again.
Underrated and Awesome. No clue if you've done it, but can we see the Arquitens or the Qussar Fire next?
I'd drop the hanger to add more laser and turbolaser cannons. It is a good small ship that the Empire needed far more of.
I would love to see a video on the Liberator-class cruiser designed by the SoroSuub Corporation and your opinions on how it fits into the Rebel fleet.
Believe I covered that one back in the day. Not much on it sadly
The Raider is one of my favorite Star Wars designs alongside the Arquitens.
Like the ISD the Arquitens was effective but not so well designed in my opinion. It is reeeally nice looking but if u consider the imperial version (A.class command cruiser) it is really crew intensive, it has not anti-fighter cannons and the worst part is that a 325 m long ship carries only 3 tie fighter if retrofitted!! im so dissatisfied with this because it it could have been a perfect capital ship. What do u think about this?
@Il Saggio Porg It's not made for fighter screening. It is meant to punch above its weight class as an escort ship. In the context of a fleet, we'd see it accompanying an ISD to assist while TIEs and Raiders would deal with fighters and ordnance.
Idea for your next topic!
I've been thinking of ditching the current game franchise I'm playing and getting back into Star Wars. Let's just say I hate - blank-, it's my favorite game. Haven't played any of the games since Rogue Squadren on the NGC.
Maybe you could put together a collection of game play footage and briefly describe what the game is about (time-line, characters, perspective of player, related stories, when released), what platform(s) is it available on. Maybe even a personal recommendations list.
Nice to see the intro/outro together there at the end. Another great video here, thanks lots.
I would love to see a starship versus between the Nebula Star destroyer from the New Republic and The Resurgent from the First Order.
The Nebula would pulverize it. The entire point of that thing is to kill entire Imperial battlegroups consisting primarily of Imperial-2's, and the Resurgent is basically just an upsized version of those things. That won't be enough to save it.
With the new season of The Bad Batch coming out, it might be good to run a video on special operations soldiers through Star Wars.
Would love you to cover some bulk freighters to cover the non personal frieghters transports
And the Vindicator.. and the Victory II.. and the Tartan Patrol Corvette.. the list goes on..
1:00 I still prefer the Tartan Class Patrol Cruiser. Fast and with a huge amount of Laser Cannons.
Tartan is a really great and underrated imperial ship. Fast and modern. Though it is 250m which makes it 100m longer, and too big for that board game lol. I personally like the cr 92a. Its like a highly configurable, dedicated combat corvette version of cr 90...
I'm thinking the engine configuration may have been that the newer one was more common ones to hide trails and easier parts availability. Just a guess I wondered same first time I saw the design changes
I absolutely love the design of the Raider. Sleek and angular in classic Imperial fashion while still looking new and modern.
It's like a Star Destroyer with Tie Interceptor wings. Looks kinda vulnerable.
As you are looking for things to talk about:
I was wondering about fighter heat dissipation in space vs in atmosphere.
As often noted a variety of ship designs use s-foils for more efficient heat dissipation when firing their weapons.
And I was asking myself if the pilots had to be more aware of the heat buildup when fighting in atmosphere.
Absolutely love this ship. If I could have a hero ship to explore the galaxy in, it would be the Raider.
The Raider is easily one of my favorite ships in Star Wars. It's just so cool.
if youre looking for topics, the V-Wing is my favorite star wars ship ever and it goes almost entirely untalked about. I'd love to hear your discussion on it with informed details, whether or not it was a bad ship used in a good way or the right ship for the wrong faction or a super fighter far too expensive to lose/use. I'll always hold it in a special place in my heart for it's form factor alone. It looks fast and lethal. Small but in a way that says "I don't need to carry huge guns to kill you"
I've heard people describe it as analogous to the TIE due to the vertical "wings" and use by the empire but from the pointy nose, astromech, bulbous canopy, and twin big engines, I think it has a lot more looking like an A-Wing ancestor. Maybe it was a mix of rebel and empire and the V-Wing was the last common ground in their design philosophies, but that's just an outlandish theory to justify the idea.
Another idea, I'd love to see you create your own fighter or capital ship from scratch. Super out of format for you I know but I'd be 100% entertained to see you hand draw a design you would want to fly in if you were in universe
Be well my man
Great video! If you need an idea, how about reviewing the ships of Lando Calrissian?......the Millennium Falcon, the Cobra, the Lady Luck, etc.?.....
Love the raider! One of my favorite craft in Fantasy Flight Games' Star Wars Armada. Love to hear the love for FFG's (now Atomic Mass Games'?) X-Wing miniature game
I’m still really upset that Squadrons turned out to be a soulless pay-2-play MOBA with a short 6 hour tutorial “story” than a proper spiritual successor to the old X-Wing and TIE Fighter games with a 30+ hour story campaign.
I literally bought the game only for the the story mode, and I still wasn't motivated enough to finish it. I desperately wanted that game to be better than it was.
I hope that you do more halo stuff soon, though there isn't really much to cover.
@Pickle Rick Yeah that's understandable.
Reider I like it a lot, especially for its size, especially the number of fighters (4x Tie/x-wing and if there are so many x-wings, it would fit 2x as many Ties (8)), but mainly it would be good for every icd, defense against fighters and Survey
Forget not the joy that X-Wing Miniatures players had when this bad boy showed up,and the additional joy when it become canon.
And the main reason FFG didn't use the Lancer was that they thought it was too big for the game, albeit people who have made Nebulon Bs for the game proove that it wasn't too big,but now we get this cool vessel.
So glad you decided to give us a breakdown on the Raider it's definitely one of the more interesting 'new' ships in Star Wars, despite its misuse. There's a ton of other vessels Id love to hear you talk about but my suggestion is going to be the Arquitens-class cruiser and its strange variant used by Moff Gideon. Two more Imperial designs that I really like but don't really know much about, aside from the fact that there's a pretty stark difference in scale between those we see in Rebels and Squadrons versus Gideon's ship, would love to know why that is and what they're intended for.
Keep up the awesome content mate, we may be in a bit of a lull right now for Star Wars but it's a vast galaxy and Im sure my favorite TH-camr can find plenty more to talk about 😉
Gideon's ship is less a variant than a something entirely different that has the same profile. You can scale the hull size up, sure, but if you don't redesign everything inside the hull you aren't getting a functional vessel.
as an X Wing player and TH-camr I absolutely love this thing. I love the shape and over all counter to the CR90.
I really wish squadrons had more support. like planet surface dogfights or canon missions
I would have loved to see that. Or at the very least full mod support, the community has done a lot with 90s TIE Fighter and X-Wing flight sim games that inspired Squadrons, it deserves to carry on that modding legacy.
The Raider II is easily my favorite Imperial Ship and I think it deserves a lot more use.
The change in the Corvis' hull and engine configuration could be explained by the necessity of upgrading the ships engines to a more efficient engine resulting in installing a typically "non-imperial" modification. Same is true for the addition of hull armor. A secondary benefit is making easier eyes on identification of the ship by friendly craft by the above mentioned non imperial modifications. In WW2 combat pilots trained using vessel silhouettes to identify targets in combat. Even in hi-tech combat, low tech techniques are useful.
The Raider reminds me a lot of Darth Maul's Scimitar, at least design-wise
I agree, and it felt sort of obvious to me. I guess not, judging by the comments and video.
You could talk about starship modifications, its possibilities, limitations and how it was done, for example with the Rebel One. Or you could talk about planetary/ private defence forces and how to build one without getting into conflict with the empire.
doing an EAW AOTR campaign right now and a squadron of 2-3 raiders will do so much more for you waving away a cloud of x wings than a lancer, plus for some reason theyre really effective at taking out other corvette sized ships, especially useful when the bot decided to go full DP-20 spam in late game lol
The ship really represents the state of the Imperial Navy pre-Galactic Civil War, I personally have a list of ships that the Empire typically has at its disposal for all sorts of mission/situation types.
Gozanti - cargo transport/passive garrison
Arquitens - active garrison/local command
Star Destroyer - sector command/fleet supplement
Super Star Destroyer - Fleet command/system command
The Raider class to me fits in between the Gozanti and the Arquitens as it's not as taxing as an Arquitens for supplies yet it can still fight to a much higher degree than a Gozanti and its many variants.
Some time ago, you put together a rather excellent review of the early chapters of my Heir to the Empire adaptation. I'd be very interested to see what you think of the more recent installments, especially as we head toward the end of the book :)
The Imperial Raider-Class Corvette reminds me of the Darth Nihilus's command ship in Knights of The Old Republic
The raider is my favorite star wars ship! I have the xwing miniature even though I don't play, I love it so much
A couple months back we were tearing the Raider apart in the GC because there's absolutely no way it can carry TIEs internally. It's just not big enough to support a hangar of that size.
Flat ships like rebel starfighters could fit, but nit standard TIEs.
Well... Tie bombers, perhaps. And Tie Hunters.
A good analysis, but I do feel like you've missed a couple of important points:
1) The Raider-I is a natural evolution of the doctrine that saw the creation of the Victory and Gladiator-Class Star Destroyers. Lira learned from her father, who designed both vessels. Both were created with battle against the CIS in mind. The CIS had large but relatively fragile vessels and preferred large, decisive engagements in their doctrine. This preference for pitched battles and cheaply made but impressive ships made the kind of big missile batteries you see on both vessels a considerable asset, because they can provide MASSIVE punch in a short period of time. However, in the Empire, both ships were found to be excessive and were re-tasked as long-range patrol vessels, more designed for counter-piracy operations than pitched battles. They saw their missile batteries stripped and replaced with ion cannons, and often had their electronics and engines overhauled.
2) This makes PERFECT sense, especially given the Rebels operate much like pirates do. They do not seek to engage in pitched battles. They do not favour decisive engagements. In fact, they avoid them at all costs. Better for the Rebels to appear from nowhere, hit a vulnerable station or convoy, and then RUN LIKE HELL. A battle against the Rebels is likely to be a pursuit as they attempt to flee, a running engagement possibly hopping through several systems over an extended period of time. In that case, you want a fast, lean ship that isn't reliant on supply lines. Missiles are powerful, but limited by ammunition reserves. Furthermore, it was far more valuable to the Empire to take in Rebel or Pirate ships intact. A rapidly expanding debris cloud can't break under interrogation and tell you where their base is, or who their suppliers are.
3) We know that the Raider-II did not carry any concussion missiles at all. In the Resurrection DLC for Battlefront II, Iden outright states "The Corvus never had any missiles!". We also have never seen any evidence that the Raider-I has a hangar bay. It is reasonable to assume that the hangar bay replaced the missile banks. Given the amount of space saved by removing missile launchers, ammunition magazines, loading mechanisms and all that, you've got a LOT of space left over. If you're switching to ion cannons in an effort to capture ships intact, why not have somewhere to store your booty whilst your techs rip the navicomp for clues about the HIDDEN REBEL BASE (tm)?
4) Within a year of the Raider-I coming out, we start to see the Empire flirting with a 'quality over quantity' in terms of starfighter doctrine. Models like the TIE Advanced line start to be developed. We know that the Raider was associated with TIE Advanced x1 test flights (Fantasy Flight Games introduced exactly that as an intro scenario for the Raider Expansion for X-Wing). A Raider-Corvette and a pair of TIE/x1's make for a surprisingly robust patrol force that can handle just about any pirate force. Imagine pitting such a team against, say, the Cumulus-Class Corsair and its R-41 starchasers. It's no contest. In that context, it isn't a weakness at all. It's a natural evolution of the Raider's role in the Empire.
5) Overall, I'd argue you have it backwards. The Raider-I was designed for direct conflict and it is GREAT in that role. In a decisive engagement, it can effectively blunt attacks from bombers or corvettes and cover the blind spots of their bigger brothers, all whilst being protected from the big guns of the enemy by the very ships they're escorting. Imagine a Raider-I in Rogue One. You wouldn't get the Y-Wing bombing run or the Hammerhead ram that really cost the Empire the battle. They'd fly into a wall of flak, and there wouldn't be enough left to effectively finish the strike.
Meanwhile the Raider-II is designed for the kind of operations where a fleet conflict is simply impractical. Pirates and early Rebels will have a converted civilian ship or outdated warship with a small fighter complement. The Raider is a potent deterrent to such raids - it's fast enough to respond before the enemy can retreat (or pursue them), it packs sustainable firepower, its own fighter escort and it has the means to TAKE THE ENEMY ALIVE. For something like Inferno Squad, it is the perfect vessel, and Inferno Squad, doctrinally, is a great response to the kind of guerrilla tactics the Rebel Alliance insists on.
IN SUMMARY: The Raider-Class Corvette and its variants are brilliant. Exceptional. In their ideal role, they're almost unbeatable. They are, however, the tragic victims of poor timing. The Raider-I was around in a time and fighting an enemy that the Raider-II would have been perfect for. By the time the Raider-II had come into full swing, the conflicts had reverted to the kind of big fights the Raider-I was designed specifically to handle.
The Raider-I is a great escort vessel that covers much of the Imperial Navy's weaknesses. It is the cure to Trench Run Disease.
The Raider-II is tailor-made to hunt pirates and insurgents. It has everything needed to hunt down, disarm and capture small raiding teams intact.
I think it was just an over sight to have a larger, anti fighter craft when fighting a force, mostly stacked up by fighters that out class ties in every single way. Giving a good threat when filling a nice whole in sizes of ships / roles.

If you want ideas on what to talk about; then what about this, so firstly as I’m sure you were already aware there is a game called Star Wars Empire at war; for which there is a large number of mods (many of which are available through the steam workshop). Amongst them are at least 3 apparently rather popular ones called Thrawn’s revenge; awakening of the rebellion; and Empire at war remake: while there are a lot of things I could say; to make a very long story short I will mention that I am really unsure about the first, as for the latter 2; 1 thing I really like (even if I don’t necessarily like everything they’ve done regarding units in general) is that they’ve tried to use larger sections or even divisions per unit rather than a couple of squads: 1 major thing I dislike is that they have made it so that missiles go straight through shields (WTF!?.;): with your obviously broad knowledge base about the Star Wars universe; I’m wondering if you would at all be interested in talking about and giving your own perspective on things like this amongst a wide variety of other things to do with said game\mods?..
What about a tourist guide to the Hyperlane routes? Interesting sights to see on the Cornelian Run or what not to miss on the Salon Corridor.
You could also do some videos on the buildings - the Senate, the Jedi Temple, Yavin 4 Base, all have interesting back stories and even the cantinas are pretty cool.
Interesting lore video, thanks. To me the Raider was just a heavy shuttle designed to ferry around Imperial black ops teams (and to sell toys IRL 😝) in Battlefront 2.
It's funny that the Empire commissioned several ships ideally suited to counter starfighters and made a point *not* to deploy them alongside ISDs even when the Alliance's hit and run tactics became clear.
If you enjoy talking about Corvette class ships, I love the Marauder class Corvette. A bit heavier than the Raider, with a starfighter compliment. Honestly, "pocket cruiser" fits it well.
The Raider (specifically the Raider II class) is one of my favorites to play with on the Imperial side in the table-top miniature game: Armada. Second only to the Arquitens!
If I were to make a Raider 3 corvette, I'd keep the New Republic engine layout, the solar panels, and add turbo lasers to the tips of each solar panel. Oh, and only have its hanger filled with TIE Advanded V1 Fighters. With some small fighter racks in the hanger, it could hold probably about 8 starfighters. Use the fighters and standard wepaons to take care of any starfighter escorts, the ion cannon to disable the shields, and the turbo lasers to take out the enemy capital ship
That is a super sexy ship for sure. One thing that always kills me though is when anyone calls the wingaling things "Solar Panels". I mean, on the TIE, Twin Ion Engine fighter, that's where all the space magic thrust and maneuvering comes from. I can see how it could be something to make an Imperial Corvette way more maneuverable, with the ability to vector space magic thrust in all directions like that. It would also explain why the Alliance version needed a lot more engines in the back if they removed them to add the armor plates. But whatever they are, "Solar Panels" is not it.
The Raider is amazing and one of my favorite ships in the Star Wars universe, the squadrons game though, that's another story.
Master Chief: *gives the Covenant their bomb back*
4:04 Iden Versio: “Hold my beer.”
To be frank, it is one of the most beautiful, most striking, most elegant and most adequate for a Main Character ships I've seen in Star Wars to this day. Love the design of this craft!
A pragmatic New Republic would be smart to keep the Raider in service...with the cosmetic changes. Or even give it a upgrade with shields improved by the Mon Cala and so on.
Fitted with X-Wings in the hangar it makes a fantastic Patrol ship and mobile base for a squadron, filling a very useful niche.
And the X-Wings will cover a few of its weaknesses, particularly its anti capital ship capabilities.
Basically the X-Wings can beat up on enemy capital ships while it acts as command and control.
A command and control that can outrun other ships big enough to be a problem for it, and that can swat any enemy fighters that could catch it.
All while messing with enemy communications.
That covers the corresponding weakness of the X-Wing as a patrol and police fighter - keeping it on station.
It would've been awesome to see the Raider fill more of a traditional destroyer role. Outfit it with a disproportionate amount of turbolasers, ion cannon, or mass drivers - essentially just specialize the heck out of it - and then use it in an anti-ship role. Charge all weapon capacitors, jump in, release a devastating first strike, and jump out. Rinse and repeat with multiple Raiders and you've got an extremely effective way to take out enemy cruisers and pester larger capital ships.
Raider vs Arquitens please
A video idea I had if you haven't already done it would be what you would have spent the death star money on. Or let's say you had 12 billion credits. What would you have used them for if you were the Empire. Just some ideas. Keep up the great work.
I had a blast writing some fanfiction involving the raider both as a friendly and enemy ship.
I have, like almost any SW fan, has always like the YT freighters. But unlike most, I tend to like the YT2000 design and because of the Falcon you never heat much at all about other YT ship designs.
I would like to see a video on that. I know, it's probably been done a billion times
The Raider Corvette for the empire I think is certainly a sleek looking ship. A shame its specs seem to be a bit underwhelming in the fighter carrying department but like you said its a patrol craft meant to escort ISDs. Perhaps they could have added a mini carrier version at the sacrifice of weapons for a third variation of the ship.
I never realized how much the Corvus changed after Inferno Squad's defection, and how much it looked a like a Nebula SD. I like it. I mean, the original look also looked similar to the Nebula, and it's probably why I like the design of the Raider a lot. Or rather why I like Nebula a lot because I was first introduced to the Raider before the Nebula, but regardless I like the sleek design with the small bridge.
The Raider, Gozanti, and the Arquitens are the real workhorses for the Empire. It's smaller multipurpose ships like these that can be used for fleet escort, screening, and reconnaissance.
I'm not sure if you went in depth on the gladiator star destroyer. Personally, that's one of my favorite designs next to the arquitens. Side note- in my opinion, the empire actually underarmed star destroyers. Yes, they were meant for intimidating foes, but their size versus armament is stupidly inefficient. I seen some improved redesigns like in legends. There was one imperial remodel in legends that didn't really get fleshed out. It's was near the end of fate of the jedi series where the remnant joins the alliance against caedas
Very cool model. X-Wing miniature is just gorgeous.
Question for you: I'm running a Star Wars rpg, & one of my players is trying to build a ship from basically scratch. Like he's put together a small swarm of mining probes together in an asteroid field the group has been using as a hideout to gather ores. What does he need to build a starfighter? How long would it take a single person/ small team to build?
the fact that its one of the few ships we see that the "guns" fold into it to give it the sleek design
I immediately understood the Corvus’s makeover. It was a purposeful shift from Imperial design language to NR design language
the Raider is a thing of beauty. it's sleek, fast, packs a good amount of firepower, takes down fighters like it's supposed to, and best of all; it looks like a Doritos chip.
I'm glad the Tie fighter game mod includes this ship. The Raider just needs an escort of Assault Gunboats. They can travel with it and bring more ship killing firepower.
Weirdly enough, I think the Raider would also work alright as a planetside close air support vessel. It might be a bit vulnerable to anti-air missiles because it is larger than a fighter, but if it hugged the terrain, popped up to surprise enemy formations with all its guns and then sped off, I think it could do some serious damage, especially to armored units or big walkers.
