It sounds like there wasnt going to be a competition. A report just released moments ago that they didn’t even think they were going to land Wilson. Then they did but assured his camp that he’d be the starter if he signed (that was confirmed by Schefter) Kenny found out via Tomlin that Russ was the number 1 barring any major changes. He wants to leave. It’s really that simple. They gave up on Pickett when they scored Wilson.

He didn’t seem to comprehend that the Steelers have put up with BS from guys in the past but those guys were top of the league at their positions to be worth the headache. Not hard to replace a 13 TD 13 INT guys production and if you have two options to do that for low cost it makes it a pretty easy call to just move on.

I really think the Steelers did intend to give Pickett a fair shot, but the minute he refused to compete with Russell Wilson, it killed his future. If he won't compete with Wilson, he won't compete with Rudolph. The Steelers are as loyal as any team in the NFL. If they were so willing to move on from Pickett so quickly, there's a reason. They assessed what they saw in him and what they saw was a mediocre QB who didn't have the leadership qualities or maturity to make it worth giving him more time to develop. It's also sort of wild that there's this idea the beat reporters were "lied" to. My guy, things change. Stuff happens fast in free agency.

Picket should be applauded. The steelers are a joke. Rudolph knew it too and ran for the door. Picket had a winning record with one full year. You do not dump a first round guy like this ever. They jerked him around and then the insane fans blamed him for doing what he was told and having to deal with a bad line, bad OC and joke receivers all year. You do not draft a qb and then act like he is some instant savior with no support. They deserve to lose every game next year.

Yes, we all rooted for Kenny, but he let the Steelers down. He deserves no sympathy. Tomlin realized the team's temperature was going in the wrong direction. Once the Reindeer exposed Kenny as the true problem, the handwriting was on the wall. The playoff loss would have been closer had TJ Watt played in the Bills game. The team hung in there after multiple mistakes and still had a chance. People forget how many injuries the team overcame and still practically swept the North. It's time to reclaim the throne.

@@Steelfan-oe7ok Come on now. I think most of us had thoughts that Pickett could have been a franchise QB. I don’t know of anyone who thought he would be the next Dan Marino or Big Ben. The organization finally realized they have to face Lamar Jackson (who they’ve handled pretty well so far) and Joe Borrow who is unquestionably the real deal. And Kenny Pickett wasn’t gonna cut it no matter how good the defense is. Let alone competing with Mahomes and KC for the AFC Championship. They saw Josh Allen in Buffalo put the game on his shoulders and steamroll the Steelers in the playoffs. It would have taken many years for Pickett to develop to that level if he ever could. They’re tired of hearing about and witnessing 1st round blowout playoff exits. They had to do something.

@@Steelfan-oe7ok I heard that Marino story somewhere. I thought that Pickett had a chance to be a franchise QB just because you never know until he was given a shot. Look at Brock Purdy or even Brady for that matter. I really wanted him to succeed for the Steeler’s sake. At first he seemed lost. First start vs Josh Allen and Buffalo not really ideal. Understandable. He seemed to slowly improve in his first year. Still thought there was a chance but less of one. The passed preseason had me believing a little more. The ass whooping in week 1 by the 49ers started to bring me back to reality and by about week 3 I knew it was hopeless. He did actually start to move the ball against Cincy in his final start after the Canada firing but didn’t produce points. After he got hurt I thought Mitch might show something. Boy was I ever wrong. Then Rudolph came in and lit it up. All doubt was erased at that point. Especially when he pouted when asked if he learned anything by watching Rudolph and he smugly said no. Hard to say what the coming season will bring. But as far as the offense is concerned I can’t see how it could be any worse.

I watched Pickett last season and he was always the biggest issue in the games.
Matt Canada was bad, but Kenny was terrible.
Go watch film of the Texans game or the Jags game.
Pickett wouldn't read the field and guys would come open as he bailed from the pocket (some clean and some not).
It got so bad that Pickens and Johnson started acting out because they didn't get the ball when they called for it.
QB school and a couple of other channels called it out in multiple games.
Pickett is not an NFL QB. He can't anticipate, nor does he have the patience to go through reads properly.

All that said, looking forward to seeing Wilson play for Tomlin. I think Fields can grow backing up Wilson for a season or two. Queen is going to really take this defense to another level. So if the Offense can stay on the field, we should have a top five defense.

I think it all came down to the fact that Pittsburgh had a chance to sign a QB with a SB ring for veteran minimum. He was much cheaper than resigning Rudolph. Pickett was told he was QB1 initially because Rudolph was an unrestricted free agent and they had to bench Trubisky because he was awful and was going to be cut. I guess at that point he was going to be handed the job because he was a first rounder. Then Wilson came along and he knew it was going to be an uphill battle at minimum especially with the defensive veterans trying to recruit Wilson. Apparently the whole team wasn’t behind Pickett. Knowing all this he wanted out. It was the best move for all parties involved.

This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to completely change and upgrade your quarterback room at virtually no expense at all. That's why the Steelers could do it. It doesn't change anything for them cap-wise. They're not making any long-term commitment to do it. It was essentially a no-brainer. They went from the lowest ceiling QB situation in the league to one of the higher ceiling QB situations in the league while also raising the floor. I'm not saying they don't still have one of the lowest floors, but it's higher than it was, and Fields gives real potential as a franchise quarterback (and some, not me, but some might still think Wilson could get back to top 10ish in the short-term).
