In a hotel room near midnight, Bridgers shares a lullaby for the lost. You can't help but hang on for dear life.

Phoebe Bridgers was one of our top discoveries going into SXSW, a quiet and powerful voice in the loud din of the festival. After she performed at Central Presbyterian Church, a favorite venue among our staff, Bridgers and percussionist Marshall Vore came to Bob Boilen's hotel room just before midnight to play the striking "Smoke Signals."
Stripped of the strings on the studio version, there is still a sweeping quality to this acoustic performance, something like Low's elegiac waltzes blurred into open chords, suitcase percussion, children's toy bells and vocal harmony. You can't help but hang on for dear life.

"how soon is now in an 80s Sedan?" evokes so much! This is one of my favorite aspects of pheobe's song writing. She finds these little mundane things that are so full of memory for all of us. Something written by a stranger speaks to so many other strangers, solely based on these little occurences and matter-of-fact observations.
Knowing this was written about Marshall, behind her, breaks my heart to watch this.

This might be one of the most simple and pure performances of a simple and pure soul - sometimes less is better. In this case, it's perfect. "I want to live at the Holiday Inn where somebody else makes the bed..." Thank you for sharing this, and for Phoebe and Marshall for this intimate performance.

This song, particularly this recording of it, is my damn spirit animal 😅. No joke. It repeatedly pulls me right out of crippling anxiety. I can get it not being to everyone's taste. But I ❤ it to the max.

Love the "Sweet" at the end of the video. I don't think she understands how good she is. If I wrote a song and performed it like that, I don't know if I could just say, "Sweet" when I finished playing.
Their harmonies are beautiful. The voices match so well.

Yeah, it was a nice small venue too, the Magic Bag I believe it was. I'm more familiar with Julien than Phoebe, but she did a great job and was very sociable when I talked to her after her set.

looks like a sennheiser mkh 418s, its a ms stereo mic in super cardioid, thats why it is so isolated and cranked up with upper high frequencies in post
Pelvaind except it seems to emphasize the "s" sounds a little too much. Maybe I'm hearing things. But this version is absolutely beautiful.

Bad mixing, I'd guess. It's common to tame the 'S' sounds in recordings using a de-esser plugin, but if you overdo it, it sounds like a lisp.

So....I finally decided to mess with playing this. And while I AGREE that is the tuning she is using...Sharp A (B flat) makes sense with the Flat B and then it's an open tuning and you never have to mute the A string. The fingering is easier. It's easier to play that way. Using the tuning she is using with A Natural puzzles me. Something I am missing????

I think from low to high, eflat a d g bflat d, trick is to mute the open a string whenever possible.

Tune A string to A#. Idk why she doesn't. Try it. You'll see you never have to mute that A string then and also don't have to fret the A# ever. Makes way more sense to play that way.

Yeah I’m like 2y late but anyway I thought this was some type of open tuning but it’s not. First string is tuned down a half step, 6th high e is tuned down a whole step to d and the 5th is tuned down a half step. The rest is in standard. Weird tuning.
Anyway idk the particular chord names but intro chord is 1st string 2nd fret and 4th string of the 3rd followed by the open second string being played to a chord change to 1st string of the 4th fret and 4th string of the 3rd fret to a chord with the 2nd string of the 3rd fret and 4th of the 3rd fret then a 2nd string 1st fret and 4th string 3rd then you move back to the intro chord and repeat. There is a portion where you hold that last shape in the chorus longer before starting back over and also a portion where she plays the second chord I
Showed you to the 3rd to the 4th and then back to the intro before repeating. It’s not too tricky once you get the tuning and you figure out the open chords you have to hit

The tambourine is annoying...the other percussions are ace, but that tambourine stomped on the carpet is a mess and a distraction - it overwhelms the piece.
