@Jake Maxton thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
"how soon is now in an 80s Sedan?" evokes so much! This is one of my favorite aspects of pheobe's song writing. She finds these little mundane things that are so full of memory for all of us. Something written by a stranger speaks to so many other strangers, solely based on these little occurences and matter-of-fact observations.
This might be one of the most simple and pure performances of a simple and pure soul - sometimes less is better. In this case, it's perfect. "I want to live at the Holiday Inn where somebody else makes the bed..." Thank you for sharing this, and for Phoebe and Marshall for this intimate performance.
For people who thumb down beautiful music like this, I wonder what they think is good, because, honestly, I don't think people like that have taste in music.
This song, particularly this recording of it, is my damn spirit animal 😅. No joke. It repeatedly pulls me right out of crippling anxiety. I can get it not being to everyone's taste. But I ❤ it to the max.
Incredible voice & guitar strumming! Very sweet... Velva from Santa Fe, N. Mexico 3-25-17 I will send to my granddaughter, Sammie, who also plays the guitar & sings...
Love the "Sweet" at the end of the video. I don't think she understands how good she is. If I wrote a song and performed it like that, I don't know if I could just say, "Sweet" when I finished playing.
"Smoke Signals" I went with you up to The place you grew up in We spent a week in the cold Just long enough to "Walden" it with you Any longer, it would have got old Singing "Ace of Spades" when Lemmy died But nothing's changed, L.A.'s all right Sleeping in my bed again, and getting in my head And then walk around the reservoir You, you must have been looking for me Sending smoke signals Pelicans circling Burning trash out on the beach One of your eyes is Always half-shut Something happened when you were a kid I didn't know you then And I'll never understand Why it feels like I did "How Soon Is Now" in an '80s sedan You slept inside of it because your dad Lived in a campground in the back of a van You said that song will creep you out until you're dead And you must have been looking for me Sending smoke signals Pelicans circling Burning trash out on the beach I want to live at The Holiday Inn Where somebody else makes the bed We'll watch TV while The lights on the street Put all the stars to death It's been on my mind since Bowie died Just checking out to hide from life And all of our problems, I'm gonna solve 'em With you riding shot-gun, speeding, 'cause fuck the cops And you, you must have been looking for me Sending smoke signals Pelicans circling Burning trash out on the beach I buried a hatchet It's coming up lavender The future's unwritten The past is a corridor I'm at the exit looking back through the hall You are anonymous I am a concrete wall
This Josh Rogosin dude is a wizard. This sounds really really great! I prefer this version to the album version. I'm probably a couple hundred of the views by myself.
Yeah, it was a nice small venue too, the Magic Bag I believe it was. I'm more familiar with Julien than Phoebe, but she did a great job and was very sociable when I talked to her after her set.
Taylor B those are nice seen first aid kit and april smith and the great picture show , in a couple private little show .... check out there music i dont think you will be disappointed april is a sweetheart
Nick Van Houghton I was thinking the same but I’m thinking it’s the way it has been recorded. All the S sound are way over the top. She is still amazing tho
looks like a sennheiser mkh 418s, its a ms stereo mic in super cardioid, thats why it is so isolated and cranked up with upper high frequencies in post
So....I finally decided to mess with playing this. And while I AGREE that is the tuning she is using...Sharp A (B flat) makes sense with the Flat B and then it's an open tuning and you never have to mute the A string. The fingering is easier. It's easier to play that way. Using the tuning she is using with A Natural puzzles me. Something I am missing????
Yeah I’m like 2y late but anyway I thought this was some type of open tuning but it’s not. First string is tuned down a half step, 6th high e is tuned down a whole step to d and the 5th is tuned down a half step. The rest is in standard. Weird tuning. Anyway idk the particular chord names but intro chord is 1st string 2nd fret and 4th string of the 3rd followed by the open second string being played to a chord change to 1st string of the 4th fret and 4th string of the 3rd fret to a chord with the 2nd string of the 3rd fret and 4th of the 3rd fret then a 2nd string 1st fret and 4th string 3rd then you move back to the intro chord and repeat. There is a portion where you hold that last shape in the chorus longer before starting back over and also a portion where she plays the second chord I Showed you to the 3rd to the 4th and then back to the intro before repeating. It’s not too tricky once you get the tuning and you figure out the open chords you have to hit
Tune A string to A#. Idk why she doesn't. Try it. You'll see you never have to mute that A string then and also don't have to fret the A# ever. Makes way more sense to play that way.
The tambourine is annoying...the other percussions are ace, but that tambourine stomped on the carpet is a mess and a distraction - it overwhelms the piece.
If you tune the A up a half step to A# it is open and easier to play and makes more sense to me to play that way. Try it and you'll see what I mean. You don't have to fret the A# then and if you don't tune to A# you have to mute the A sometimes.
Instantly fell in love with her sound. Then her voice. Then her lyrics. Then her.

@Jake Maxton it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much you really help me out !
@Ford Eden No problem =)
Knowing this was written about Marshall, behind her, breaks my heart to watch this.
Charlotte Stein who is Marshall?
The guy behind her, the percussionist.
after you pointed that out this becomes so intense
i want to know more about this omg
Are you sure about that? I thought Ask Me To (Steamroller) was about Marshall.

Smoke signals on her album gives me twin peaks opening vibes. Beautiful artist.
It's definitely the bass line, I noticed it too!
this song should have been on twin peaks. what a pity they were released the same year.
@@KizCat I though this was a joke at first, but then I realized a third season indeed came out then :)
Whoa i never noticed that but now i can’t unhear it. It totally sounds like falling
YES
hey whoever mixed this, your de-essing gave phoebe a lisp
she does lisp and omg how cute this is
@@anotheraleks She definitely does not lisp.
@@anotheraleks phoebe doesn't lisp, those extremely crisp mics emphasize the 's' sound way too much, it happens a lot

Love at the end when everyone is clapping and Phoebe just says "Sweet", like yea I nailed it, whatever
i’m so in love with her it’s kind of crazy. she’s like the coolest subtle cool girl in the world

Just outstanding. In every way. Man that guy is a sweet harmony singer too.
that guy is also who the song is written about

danman6669 everyone’s entitled to an opinion. You may thumbs down things they like.
No thumbs down up on this to date. Sweet!
This is my favorite performance i've ever seen on NPR. Frisson from head to toe for this entire video.

I like how their voices complement each other.
Their harmonies are beautiful. The voices match so well.

"Smoke Signals"
I went with you up to
The place you grew up in
We spent a week in the cold
Just long enough to
"Walden" it with you
Any longer, it would have got old
Singing "Ace of Spades" when Lemmy died
But nothing's changed, L.A.'s all right
Sleeping in my bed again, and getting in my head
And then walk around the reservoir
You, you must have been looking for me
Sending smoke signals
Pelicans circling
Burning trash out on the beach
One of your eyes is
Always half-shut
Something happened when you were a kid
I didn't know you then
And I'll never understand
Why it feels like I did
"How Soon Is Now" in an '80s sedan
You slept inside of it because your dad
Lived in a campground in the back of a van
You said that song will creep you out until you're dead
And you must have been looking for me
Sending smoke signals
Pelicans circling
Burning trash out on the beach
I want to live at
The Holiday Inn
Where somebody else makes the bed
We'll watch TV while
The lights on the street
Put all the stars to death
It's been on my mind since Bowie died
Just checking out to hide from life
And all of our problems, I'm gonna solve 'em
With you riding shot-gun, speeding, 'cause fuck the cops
And you, you must have been looking for me
Sending smoke signals
Pelicans circling
Burning trash out on the beach
I buried a hatchet
It's coming up lavender
The future's unwritten
The past is a corridor
I'm at the exit looking back through the hall
You are anonymous

Can get along playing this kind of guitar for hours on end, with vocal in my head. Coming out stiff in the ribs from hugging my guitar.
I always come back to this version of the song for some reason ).i'll keep following your music :)
Her voice is just incredible
Best debut album in yrs 👌
i like how her feet hang off the bed and don't touch the ground.
God that frontier guitar sounds amazing, goes perfect with her voice
I saw her in Paris, opening for Conor... She was amazing...and in the backstage very nice and kind!!
Holy hell, she's beautiful
Eric Reid same thing that i thought

I saw her open for Julien Baker in Ferndale last year or so. She's a great performer! Great songwriter too.
Taylor B that would be an awesome show to see

Pelvaind except it seems to emphasize the "s" sounds a little too much. Maybe I'm hearing things. But this version is absolutely beautiful.
sounds like she has a lisp Lol
Purple panty dropper 2.0
Bad mixing, I'd guess. It's common to tame the 'S' sounds in recordings using a de-esser plugin, but if you overdo it, it sounds like a lisp.

phoebe is a huge fan of Elliot Smith, she even wrote a song for/about him on her new album.
oh boy is that a lisp?! so....adorable
Keanu Reaves it’s not
What tuning is she in and what are the chords, please to anyone with a better ear than me?
I think from low to high, eflat a d g bflat d, trick is to mute the open a string whenever possible.
Thanks. I got the bflat wrong.
Tune A string to A#. Idk why she doesn't. Try it. You'll see you never have to mute that A string then and also don't have to fret the A# ever. Makes way more sense to play that way.

Does anyone know what chords she's using?
Elizabeth Kolb I haven't sat down and figured it out yet, but she's definitely in an alternate open tuning, maybe DADGAD?
i tried to sort it out yesterday without success, unfortuately DADGAD didn't seem to work out..I think it's actually in D# anyway
Tuning is D# A D G A# D...weird one
@@Odoth Try tuning the A string to A# and then you'll see how EXTREMELY Weird it is she Doesn't do that.
