Lol yeah that’s gotta be challenging to just sit there hands crossed on stage as a drummer while your singer guitarist plays, especially an electric guitar lol. I’m looking for the brushes or something, maybe a cajol or djempe, this song is suited for it.
the sinking feeling in my gut that i get when this song plays is unmatched by anything in the world. the way she so nonchalantly sings gets me every time. the singer truly believes that they are a bad person. i can’t explain the way this song makes me feel.
I love Phoebe Bridgers. Her music entered my life at just the right time. Here is a piece of Phoebe interviewing the original song writer, Mark Kozelek. (Mark with Phoebe at Piccino, San Francisco, April 2018) Phoebe: I have to ask about ‘You Missed My Heart’. When I heard you play it at a show in Koreatown in 2013, it completely floored me. I immediately wished I had written it. How did you come to write it? How long did it take? Mark: The first part of the song was literally taken from a nightmare that I had in a hotel room in St. Catherine’s, Ontario. In reality, I was frustrated with a repair man and then dreamed that I pulled a knife out of a drawer and stabbed him and that he turned to me and said “you missed my heart”. The song was written in that moment. I don't recall how much time I spent writing it, but not long. I really love that church in Koreatown.
Hhmmmmmn. Bullshit Mark. I wrote this and gave it to you in the telecourse office in the basement of the Spokane Falls Community College library in 2000.
It is truly a gift from the universe when the right music comes into your life when you need it most.. I came across Sun Kil Moon/Red House Painters almost ten years ago after a hard breakup and completely fell in love with everything Mark has done. I've actually had the pleasure of smoking a cigarette with him and having a casual conversation with him after a show. Great dude... and now sort of going through another depressive stage in my life I hear a song by Pheobe Bridgers and love it. Then I go to explore other songs of hers and what do I find? A Mark Kozelek cover. I believe the universe is gifting me again, this time with Bridger's music...
Was reading through the comments as I’m listening through this album for the first time, and I wasn’t really getting the comments the first couple minutes of this song. Obviously it was very moving and meaningful, how she kills this person who won’t leave her but it still just wasn’t hitting me. And then we got to the verse that this character went to jail and tries to escape, and then what happens to her after. That gave me chills. Those lines were a gut punch. Existential. Stunning. There aren’t even enough words to describe it. This song blew my mind
This is a cover. Mark Kozelek is the original songwriter. It was inspired by a nightmare he had. And this song isn't even close to one of his best songs. I suggest looking up and listening to his bands Red House Painters, and after that his second band Sun Kil Moon. This song is part of his solo/collaboration work. Just letting you know, because if this song blew your mind then you will totally dig Red House Painters and early Sun Kil Moon. I wouldn't recommend any SKM after 2017 though until you've had a listen to everything before it dating back to the mid 90s. The newer material will not make sense and will most likely put you off. I don't even like it and Kozelek is in my top 5 favorite artists.
Outrageously talented. Huge Kozelek fanboy and even I can admit she blew him out the water with this. A LOT more than a moderately talented young woman.
It is fitting, his covers of Modest Mouses Neverending math equation and Space travel is boring transcend the originals with similarly beautiful anguish
I heard Phoebe's version first & then I listened to the others, and while I like them all, I feel like Phoebe adds a special note to the song...I love it so much 💙
"driving into downtown wheeling, showing her off" 🤕 this song has come up 3 different times on the queue of a 200+ song playlist today. it's like the universe wants to break my heart lol
I have found a new artist to love.. I came across Phoebes song called Garden Song and now I find she did a cover of one of my favorite songs of one of my favorite songwriters of all time... she is beautiful and Kozelek is horribly underrated.
Broke into her house, saw her sitting there Drinking coke and whiskey in her bra and underwear Saw him in the kitchen, hanging up the phone I asked him nicely once to pack his things and go He gave her a reassuring look, said he wouldn't leave But I asked him one more time, this time pulled out my shiv Stuck him in the back and I pulled it out slow And I watched him fall down, and as the morning sun rose He looked at me and said "You missed my heart, you missed my heart You got me good, I knew you would But you missed my heart, you missed my heart" Were his last words before he died Looking out the window, up at the blue sky Listening to her scream, listening to her cry A feeling of relief came over my soul I couldn't take it any longer and I lost control I chased her up the stairs and I pinned her to the ground And underneath her whimpering I could hear the sirens sound I rattled off a list of all the things I missed Like going to the movies with her and the way she kissed me Driving into downtown Wheeling, showing her off Backyard barbecues and reunions in the park I said I missed her skin and when she started laughing And while I clenched down on her wrist, she said "that's quite a list But there's one thing you missed "You missed my heart, you missed my heart That's quite a list, but what you really missed You missed my heart, you missed my heart That's quite a list, but what you really missed" Running through the parking lot, running through the fields Policemen on my back, something hit my skull and cracked They dragged me off to jail, set a million dollar bail Where I tried to tie a noose, but I failed and I broke loose I went racing through the prison yard, shot down by a tower guard He got me in the shins, and he got me in the arms They strapped me in the gurney, took me off to the infirmary Where the priest read my last rites And just before, everything went dark I said: "He missed my heart, he missed my heart He got me good, I knew he would But he missed my heart, he missed my heart" And just before, everything went dark The most poetic dream came flowing like the sea Laying there my lifeblood draining out of me A childhood scene, night sky moon beams Fishing with my friends sitting in the wild reeds Watching the Ohio river flow at night Waiting for the bullhead catfishes to bite Downriver from the Moundsville prison graveyard
I don't have enough love to give this song the love it deserves.
“Now that I’ve burned every playlist and given all my love”
A shout-out for my man the drummer havin' an existencial crisis behind Phoebe

Mark Kozelek aka Sun Kil Moon has so many great songs.
especially the Red House Painters earlier stuff
Lyrics written by Mark Kozelek & music by Jimmy LaValle (aka The Album Leaf)
Fantastic cover of a beautiful song
Fuck em, Phoebe is better than they’ll ever be!
@@AnonymousQwerty Kozelek is a veteran song-writer, fantastic at his work. Why not appreciate both Bridgers and him?

Absolutely man, this girl is the future of folk music. Much love from an eclectic metalhead lol
Nice Kozelek reference there!
the genius is creating the song. not signing other's genius.

My god, you completely broke me. Thank you. Thank you so much...
shaking and crying rn
Better than the studio version, there are many things about her I like but I’m sure about two of them : she’s so talented and has got a great voice
Broke into her house, saw her sitting there
Drinking coke and whiskey in her bra and underwear
Saw him in the kitchen, hanging up the phone
I asked him nicely once to pack his things and go
He gave her a reassuring look, said he wouldn't leave
But I asked him one more time, this time pulled out my shiv
Stuck him in the back and I pulled it out slow
And I watched him fall down, and as the morning sun rose
He looked at me and said
"You missed my heart, you missed my heart
You got me good, I knew you would
But you missed my heart, you missed my heart"
Were his last words before he died
Looking out the window, up at the blue sky
Listening to her scream, listening to her cry
A feeling of relief came over my soul
I couldn't take it any longer and I lost control
I chased her up the stairs and I pinned her to the ground
And underneath her whimpering I could hear the sirens sound
I rattled off a list of all the things I missed
Like going to the movies with her and the way she kissed me
Driving into downtown Wheeling, showing her off
Backyard barbecues and reunions in the park
I said I missed her skin and when she started laughing
And while I clenched down on her wrist, she said "that's quite a list
But there's one thing you missed
"You missed my heart, you missed my heart
That's quite a list, but what you really missed
You missed my heart, you missed my heart
That's quite a list, but what you really missed"
Running through the parking lot, running through the fields
Policemen on my back, something hit my skull and cracked
They dragged me off to jail, set a million dollar bail
Where I tried to tie a noose, but I failed and I broke loose
I went racing through the prison yard, shot down by a tower guard
He got me in the shins, and he got me in the arms
They strapped me in the gurney, took me off to the infirmary
Where the priest read my last rites
And just before, everything went dark
I said: "He missed my heart, he missed my heart
He got me good, I knew he would
But he missed my heart, he missed my heart"
And just before, everything went dark
The most poetic dream came flowing like the sea
Laying there my lifeblood draining out of me
A childhood scene, night sky moon beams
Fishing with my friends sitting in the wild reeds
Watching the Ohio river flow at night
Waiting for the bullhead catfishes to bite
Downriver from the Moundsville prison graveyard
The best voice in the world 🌟🌟🌟
fun fact this is my fav song to ever exist
Oh wow I love her beautiful voice ❤
Phoebe has such a great voice
one of my favorite songs
Great. Such an emphasis on the words...great !
The album version on piano is excellent as well
Imagine your soul was so deficient that you thought nothing of walking around the venue while this heartbreak unfolded.
Haha. It’s insane to see anybody walk away from her during this song of all songs.

Kozelek is a master lyricist, and Jimmy LaValle, a master of atmosphere. Good effort by Phoebe Bridgers
I RATTLED OFF A LIST OF ALL THE THINGS I MISSED LIKE GOING TO THE MOVIES WITH HER AND THE WAY SHE KISSED ME
Too fucking raw.
underrated
i love this song yet i dont understand the lyrics and how the verses relate to each other

What the fuck was Marshall thinking about back there. Dude looks like he is questioning every decision he has ever made

This cover is on her album that came out in 2017- Stranger in the Alps.
