  • Sailors assigned to Construction Battalion Maintenance Unit 303 detachment discussing performing their duties and what it means to be a U.S. Navy Seabee.
Transcript: If you had to describe what a Seabee is, what would you say? - A fighting construction worker. - Even better a construction worker on steroids. - [Donald] Yeah, a construction worker with a rifle in his arm. (intense music) - Really, you get two different responses, "Seabees, what's that?" - What's that? - What a heck is a Seabee? - [Levi] Well, the Seabee's are, they're construction force for the Navy. So that's what the Seabee stands for: Construction Battalion, sea bees. We're very unique to the Navy is that we don't go on ships. - [Adam] You know we do the construction. We do all the vertical, we do horizontal, we do plumbing, we do welding, we do electrical. You name it, we can do it. (intense music) - You know, in the wars, the civilian construction workers were deployed to maintain bases and everything else, but they weren't able to carry, carry rifles or defend for themselves. - Cause you know that's kind of one of the reasons we came around because you couldn't arm civilians to go and help out in the fight, so whenever they're marching forward, the marines, the Seabees were right there with them. - [Levi] Construction force that can fight was important to have, and that's really, you know, how it comes full circle. We're out here in Hawaii, continuing that legacy and doing that. (rifle cocking) (intense music) - [Arturo] Mostly what we do is carpentry. So any vertical construction, sometimes even horizontal construction, we do it, so. - [David] The backbone of Seabee's freedom is, I mean, we pretty much do everything as far as construction goes, almost everything. - [Alexander] Uh, we did everything from underground to overhead electrical, so part distribution, generators, interior electrical, pretty much just a little bit - Are any of these wires are - of everything.

My grandfather was a seabee in ww2 and my father was a Seabee in Vietnam. I'm not sure what my grandfather did, but I know my father was a sw2 in CB 74 from 1970-1975 and was part of the team that built the hospital barge on lake Titicaca

Huge respect for the SeeBees. They are construction workers when not in a fight, but when they have to fight, boy they really do put up a fight. They were in Fallujah too fighting alongside the Marines and Army.
