- According to the @2ndSouthCarolinaStringBand , this song was "Published by J. W. Randolph in Richmond in 1863. The composer was not credited. The melody is from the Scottish tune Bonnie Dundee. "
I was first introduced to this song by listening to Tennessee Ernie Ford. I learned this myself.
Check out @2ndSouthCarolinaStringBand's version here:
• RIDING A RAID
I'm playing a Gardner's Dulcimers Minstrel Banjo in an 'Open' Gb Tuning.
There's old Stonewall the rebel who leans on his sword,
and while we are mounting prays low to the lord,
now each Cavalier that loves honor and right,
let him follow the feather of Stuart tonight.
Come tighten your belt and slacken your reins,
come buckle your blanket and holster again,
try the click of your trigger and balance your blade,
for he must ride sure that goes riding a raid
Now gallop, now gallop to swim or to ford,
Stonewall still watching prays low to the lord
goodbye dear old rebel, the river's not wide,
and Maryland's light's in her window to guide
[come tighten your belt...]
There's a man in the White House with blood on his mouth,
if there's Knaves in the North then there's Braves in the South,
we are three thousand horses and not one afraid,
we are three thousand sabers and not a dull blade
[come tighten your belt...]
I love the inclusion of the songs 2SC brought back into the light. Both you and a couple of people are doing wonders in bringing back early American music and I’m all for it.
Thank you. Love to hear it, only wish 2nd SC still played live
A couple! You need some Old Cremona for breakfast!
this is awesome nice job
If prairie home companion were still a show Knox would fit right in.
Boy do I miss the old Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor. If I remember correctly, Keillor still publishes his 'writers almanac' and does a touring version of PHC.
… love these videos. The singing reminds of Bob Dylan. His is a unique voice. Not particularly or popularly beautiful, but strong and bold.
Can’t get enough of these videos
Thank you! I always strive for good intonation and sound but I'll say i'm certainly no opera singer
Great tune and performance!
I love listening to these songs. Thank you for the respite these videos provide
Lovely! An old Scottish tune "Bonnie Dundee".
Another banger
That was good ! I have listened to a lot of 2nd South Carolina and hadn’t heard that one ~ Jackson did pray low to the Lord. I have a nostalgia for a time I didn’t live in 🙏🏻❤️
Hopefully more Civil war era tunes on the way

Strange as it sounds - I love seeing you go into “flow”
Watch the lead singer from pearl jam’s eyes whenever he really gets into what he’s singing and you’ll see they go vacant whenever he hits a point that’s of emotional importance
Me circa 2026
hey knox what banjo are you playing, im starting to look for one to save up for!
I'm Playing a Gardner's Dulcimers Cherrywood Minstrel Banjo.

Just a quick copy from Google:
Tis old Stonewall the rebel that leans on his sword
And while we we are mounting prays low to the Lord
Now each cavalier that lover honor and right
Let him follow the feather of Stuart tonight
Come tighten your girth and slacken your reigns
Come buckle your blanket and holster again
By the click of the trigger and balance your blade
For he must ride sure that goes riding a raid
Galloping galloping galloping galloping
Tighten your girth, slacken your reigns
Galloping galloping galloping galloping
Buckle your blanket and holster again
Then gallop, now gallop to swim or to ford
Old Stonewall's still watching, prays low to the Lord
Goodbye dear old rebel, the river's not wide
And Maryland's lights in her window to guide
Come tighten your girth and slacken your reigns
Come buckle your blanket and holster again
By the click of your trigger and balance your blade
For he must ride sure that goes riding a raid
Galloping galloping galloping galloping
Tighten your girth, slacken your reigns
Galloping galloping galloping galloping
Buckle your blanket and holster again
Then gallop, then gallop by rivers and rocks
Who'd bar us the way take his toll in hard knocks
With these points of steel on the line of Penn
We've made some fine strokes and we'll make them again
Come tighten your girth and slacken your reigns
Come buckle your blanket and holster again
By the click of your trigger and balance your blade
For he must ride sure that goes riding a raid
Galloping galloping galloping galloping
Tighten your girth, slacken your reigns
Galloping galloping galloping galloping
Buckle your blanket and holster again
Riding, riding, riding, riding, riding, riding the raid
