Bus 1170 : Vince Li and the Greyhound Bus Murder (2011) - the fifth estate

  • A seemingly random decision, to take the Greyhound from B.C. to Winnipeg rather than a friend’s offer of a plane ticket, would cost 22-year-old Tim McLean his life and profoundly change the lives of those who witnessed his murder. On Greyhound 1170, Vincent Li, a diagnosed schizophrenic on his own randomly chosen bus journey, sat beside McLean and then, obeying voices inside his head, repeatedly stabbed and then cannibalized McLean’s body. The Fifth Estate recounts the story from the perspective of two of the surviving passengers, a truck driver who stopped to help, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Stanley Yaren, and Tim McLean's family. His father, stepmother and mother struggle to understand why the RCMP stood outside Bus 1170 for five hours, as Li cut up their son’s body, before intervening.

    In December of year 2000, at midnight, I boarded a Greyhound from Edmonton to Fort McMurray. I sat beside a guy who had a pair of scissors and pasting clippings on the back of the seat in front of him. I thought it was weird. Looked around for a vacant seat to move and couldn't find any. It was a long journey so I thought I need to inform the driver. Got up and told the driver and this guy got up and was going to follow me to the front. Then someone by the second or third row offered me a seat. We stopped in the nearest town where the driver alerted the authorities and the police boarded the bus and took this guy away. This experience still come to me to this day and wondered what would have happened if I didn't tell the driver. We can never tell what's going to happen to us until it happens. All these off chances and coincidences are just the way life goes and that we can never explain when it happens to us.
    God speed my humankind. ❤️🙏🙏

      Bad Bianca - Have you seen & read ALL evidence of this WHOLE incidence ? If NOT what gives YOU the RIGHT to pass any JUDGEMENT on ANYTHING that transpired or didn't transpired ? NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO PASS JUDGEMENT WITHOUT ALL THE FACTS. BUT IN TRUE HUMAN FORM -- JUDGEMENTAL HUMANS ALL THE TIME MAKING IGNORANT UNEDUCATED, UNINFORMED OPINIONS AND STATEMENTS WITHOUT ALL THE "INFORMATION". Doing such doesn't help anyone, just creates more problems & pain.
      I have experienced too many of these situations (both while working and seeing my 17 year old sisters mangle body - from a MVA to say good bye to her) to ever understand why some people chose to torture themselves with unrealistic expectations of wanting to see a mangled body.
      Tim's father was able to physically say good bye to his son. Saying good bye to a body is NOT say good bye to the person and the spirit of the deceased. There are MILLIONS of people that are unable to physically to say good bye to a body, which is NO longer their loved one.(bodies never found, bodies damaged by war, ect). And all these years later Tim's Dad still needs some serious counselling to understand this. For some people it is much better to NOT see a mangled body and to be able to remember their loved one as a health person. They only remember the destroyed body that now haunts them and NOT what was their loved one.
      This whole situation was a HORRIFIC NIGHTMARE and I feel for Tim's family & friends as well as all the people involved - bus passengers, the truck driver who reached out to HELP, rescued people on the bus & prevented the perp from escaping. Too many have suffered.

The majority of people with this diagnose don't kill people and can live a somewhat normal life. This guy never even tried and let his condition get worse, much worse, THIS is his crime in my opinion. This fact should've been considered when sentencing him, in Canada he could've easily have gotten treatment but he didn't. @cat Stapleton no one can determine if a person reacted in his right mind or out of it. What's more important is this person has proven he is capable of committing the worse crime imaginable and one time is never enough for a killer. I would consider the fact that he was choosing suicide by cop. He decided he had no future, didn't want to live, and a person that don't want live and to much of a coward to kill himself this was the perfect thing for him. I listen to what he said and it didn't sound as though he was guided by voices. He was to determined for a death sentence. How stupid can a psychologist be. Does Canada even care of its victims? No one is asking for them to go against what they feel is right but to show society that we are with you, more than a killer. This is crazy to even think about saying he will be released. I suppose now man can determine if and when a killer will strike again. Have they took into consideration why some killers come to Canada in the first place . It is known back in the 18th century's criminals knew where the border was before Canada's law enforcement knew it's borders Every criminal seems to know where they should go to get away with a crime. It hasn't stopped yet. I use to be angry when killers head to the Mexican border only to get away with a crime, at least some things have changed as far as them getting away with heading to the Mexico borders. I don't know but have they thought about when to release him? One thing I do know is every criminal is high fiving, go for Canada it's the place to be. The whole outcome was unheard of.

      @Dizzle At this point, Tim was already dead. There was a lot of criticism about how the police handled this while Li was desecrating the body but the way the law is structured, there was no legal authority to shoot him unless he put another person’s life in immediate danger. There’s no way a police officer would have been justified in sniping Li off, although they certainly had the ability to do it. Tim McLean was already dead and Li was clearly arrestable for that. As horrible as the mutilation and cannibalism is, that’s a relatively minor offense in the Canadian Criminal Code. The officers at the scene made the decision to wait Li out rather than make an aggressive arrest attempt where someone else may be hurt or killed, including Li. I believe they made the right choice as the incident ended without further violence however many will disagree with that. They acted within the law and that’s what they’re mandated to do. Shooting Li would amount to murder.

    • @lerobshow6300
      @lerobshow6300 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Hayden Blanchard I think you missed my point. Tim McLean was dead in less than 2 minutes. How did the cops failed? They weren't even there. Tim got stabbed at least 20 times including around 8 times in the neck in less than 30 seconds. There's nothing anyone could have done at that point. Then the driver of the bus along with one passenger and one truck driver that stopped grabbed a hammer and gave a crowbar to the passenger. They blocked the bus door so the killer couldn't go out. When the police arrived the killer was stuck inside the bus and was at that point eating body parts of Tim. I definitely agree with you that the Canadian system has it flaws and i'm not saying that i agree with all of it.
      You also have to take into consideration that there was kids and people there. The cops can't just start shooting and kill the guy in front of the kids. First well it that would've been considered murder and second imagine the added trauma that the people would've faced.
      Tim was dead. Half of his body was already cut up and his killer was stuck inside the bus. The reason why the police didn't shoot the killer (and that's where the Canadian system is flawed) is that they couldn't shoot him. If they shot him it would've, once again, been considered murder.
      Of course i agree that if it was up to me or you i would've shot him on the spot. But in the eyes of the law and considering the situation they couldn't just do that.
      The killer being released after 6 years though is totally unacceptable. WTF were they thinking

    I've traveled in greyhound and to this day they dont check your bags. Just last week a man had a gun and started shooting in the bus. I just cant understand how the cops didnt shoot the killer. I am in disbelief of this. Now the killer is free, almost all witnesses have PTSD, the family left with no closure. The killer will kill again, and I confirm now that you just never know when and how you will die. RiP to Tim😭
