I would guess the new rings will eventually lap into those small groove in the cylinder walls. For economic reasons I think you made a good call on that intake valve since its already mated to the profile of its valve seat. I really like the way you improvise. In my shop I don't throw ANYTHING away because you just don't know when you will need that piece of scrap for a project like yours. You are a good mechanic. I have a Chinese made dual sport I bought new for a song and a dance. It was a piece of junk even as I built it new from the crate and there is something breaking on it all the time but I have managed to keep it alive for the past seven years using improvisation techniques like you.
Try and using a bottle of SeaFoam.. if you pour into a container, and soak parts, it'll clean all the carbon, oil, grease, dirt etc etc and make it new looking
After you put the valve in spray some lube or gas in the intake and exhaust ports and check for any leaked around the valve set ..to see if you can use the valve and is settled good
Nice of it to seize at TDC. Wouldn’t surprise me if a stuck ring was why it was running badly. I’d have left the piston and head in a pan of water on the boil for a few hours.
The problem with the intake valve is, if that edge is too sharp, it will attract too much heat and warp, the piston however, will last another 4 lifetimes.
Ha ha your nuttyer than a squirrels belly :-)) You have done really well, i half expected the piston to be unusable. With new rings im sure it will work, im just not sure about the valves sealing, i would put the springs back on and try the water test. And talking to valves....... well the men in the white coats are coming for you lol.
zx8401ztv It's not my fault, it was talking to me first!! I was kind of worried about the piston, because of the abuse I gave it with the hammer, but it looks pretty good so we'll see what happens.
I use a brake caliper hone for doing small bore engines. They work great and do the job. Oh and your improvised hone did all right. Oh and is this bike a 1969?
BrucieDiesel haha thanks, better late than never I guess. I've got a slow connection, and the wife was perturbed because I clogged up the interned all day :P
how often do you work with gasoline because id try to keep that to a minimum lol when you start to talk to engine components i think its a sign to maybe take a break lol but other than that good work on the honda.
Iseekoutthetruth After you mentioned that you had luck with that method I tried boiling the piston for about 10 minutes but that top ring would just not budge.Maybe I didn't boil it long enough?
I know this is a four year old video, so i doubt anyone cares anymore; You can be cheap, but you have to be within reason. Putting known bad parts back in that are less than 20 dollars to replace is really pushing it. It's some kind of reverse sunk-cost fallacy of "i didnt spend much on this bike, so im not going to spend much fixing it". We live in the land of things, and especially with the horizontal honda motors being basically universal, there is no excuse for reusing bad parts.
I mean really! How much could a piston and a couple of valves cost?! I can't watch this! As a former tech and motorcyclists, I can't do this butchery! You sir, are a hack!
These are by far the best videos on TH-cam in regards to small single Honda motors. Well done! I’ve used your series as a resource several times.
You are such a spiritual type of guy that's why God blesses you with knowledge and abiliry, tenacity is over whelming!! Thank you for your spirirt!!

When the end of the world comes...... I want you there to MacGyver everything. Your mechanical abilities are freaking amazing!🤓
Great videos, Mr very well explained & los of triks with details thanks, keep sharing with us Joe & bros.thanks.say hello Joe.
This guy is so awesome hope he keeps making more project vids
Nice! It's so satisfying to see all those parts cleaned up. Can't wait to see the bike up and running.
Ryan Brock thanks! It's (slowly) coming along.

I am learning so much from these vid’s 👍 thank you 🙏
If Elsa won’t take the carrot, then give her the stick. Well done Jake.
You've been watching Ichiban haven't you !. gotta stop that !

This is a good series of videos. Thank you for putting these up as it gives me hope to try and salvage parts.

Respecting the valve, gotta love it!
Douglas Malcolm haha I tried to expect it's wishes......see pt 5 for the follow up :)
Almost forgot, make sure you clean the cylinder after with some soapy water to clear out your new cross-hatching. Good luck!
Ha ha your nuttyer than a squirrels belly :-))

Woah, woah, woah... "Cheaper side" we see that carrera over there... We see whats really going on here. I think.
This inspires me to keep working on mine
A better way of removing the carbonized crud on the piston would be a soak in Gunk Hydro-Seal or Berryman Chem-Dip.
all gussied up and ready for the big dance! awesome
vwomar haha glad you enjoy the nonsense
a good overnight vinegar bath would have helped and I like pb blaster for removing carbon.
Please don't use gas . gunk and kerosene is much less flammable . love the vid .
Did he just say "reuse the rings" I would sandblast the head and cylinder hone it and replace all moving parts
for a minute there I thought you where going to break out into a new song about Elsa.
Iseekoutthetruth haha, no not this time :-)
Looking great! Cant wait for part 5!
Cap10323 Thanks! I'm hoping to get the motor back together in the next video.
I bet She'll start right up.. Those old Honda's are nearly Un-Killable!
U can hit the head with a wire brush on drill in the combustion chamber
good job! I love to watch you work ! you remind me of me`, except your smarter!
tod cooper Thanks, but don't be so sure. I can just edit out my really dumb moments!

Been hearing those voices long?
What about the HEAD bolts? Did you enmesh yourself with them? (that's a Greatfull Dead reference).
Yep show all that love
looking forward to part 5!
ZTINGR Thanks! Should be pretty soon.
You could seat the valves very cheap
Why not try muriatic acid to clean the rust from the piston?
Jim Morrison SALUTES YOU!
Mars Rover haha it's good to hear somebody caught that one
I even thought about the song before you got to mention it! :D
Love the references, paint it black on the Elite 80 also springs to mind ;)
This guy reminds me of Itchinan Moto
hahaha this was great for a 230am upload!
BrucieDiesel haha thanks, better late than never I guess. I've got a slow connection, and the wife was perturbed because I clogged up the interned all day :P
I need to ask in relation to the intake valve are you high?????
how often do you work with gasoline because id try to keep that to a minimum lol when you start to talk to engine components i think its a sign to maybe take a break lol but other than that good work on the honda.
+Michael Bryson It's not my fault, they talked to me first!
lol true dat
jake, where do you shop for parts?
When's part 5 can't wait ??
aaron yates Check the channel, put it up 8/5 :)
Just watched it, when do we get to hear Elsa sing ??
ah yes.the government says our gas cans must have foreskins.
I would have put it in a pot of boiling water
Iseekoutthetruth After you mentioned that you had luck with that method I tried boiling the piston for about 10 minutes but that top ring would just not budge.Maybe I didn't boil it long enough?
😁😁😁pokey tool, i got those😉😉😉
❤
Ooops nearly forgot, there is gold under that rust :)
zx8401ztv That would be nice!!
Are you long finger nails part of your tool kit?
What model Lincoln Electric welder is that?
rusco321 It's a mig 140. I just bought it a while ago, I thought I'd start up a new hobby.
I have that same gas can, and that spout is a real pain in the ass

you don't need to use that much compound
DrATV has new, big bore kits, new valves, bigger cam shaft..all cheap..Build big and bad!! 110 kit is cheap!
category: Zen :)
Wire wheel would have been much faster.
I swear if you use that piston you are an official super Jew
+Daniel Bargas well at least I'd be official at something
+Jennies Garage lol it works though
+Daniel Bargas fix whats broke, throw away what falls apart
Na
