      that's a good actor there. He stayed in character, didn't draw unnecessary attention, kept it normal. If the bottle had broken, there's a chance they might have redone the seen, or the breaking bottle could have distracted someone or caused someone to break character. That was a good catch.

    I love how Val Kilmer delivers _"Let's have a Spelling contest!",_ he looks exactly how a person holding to burst into laughter looks, it was so natural you can tell he had to find that line funny even after dozens of times of rehearsing it; that's some method acting right there.

  • @natecolb9479
    @natecolb9479 ปีที่แล้ว +65

    1:56 I understand why everyone is talking about Val’s performance obviously but Sam Elliott’s eyes and voice is probably one of the realest depictions of just pure rage struggling to be let out in a film I’ve seen.
    The way Ike just keeps talking and getting closer and closer, you almost see Virgil’s eyes lighting up as he gets more and more angry with Ike’s attitude.
    Truly great performances by everyone in the scene.

    • @EternalRoman
      @EternalRoman 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Indeed, and it is as you said, everyone involved on this film performed so good that one could have a big difficulty having a preference objectively speaking. From the coward Ike, his performance was so real and the actor made you really hate Ike so much. Sam Elliot is just a master of the craft, and Indeed, Val Kilmer took on so much that every scene with him was pure gold. Bill Paxton was like the innocent puppy that really puts the pain in you.
      I don't like cowboy movies whether based on real life or not, but this film is my favorite along with Outlaws with Collin Farrell.

    Ike was about to get a serious beat down from Virgil's moustache. Sam Elliot's facial hair is so epic that I can see the left half of his 'stache grabbing Ike by the neck while the right half turns into a fist that starts punching him in the face, Looney Tunes-style.

    Doc knew the end was coming soon, and he wasn’t ready to die. There was a sad reflection in his eyes. He simply wanted to live deep while he lived, to excessively enjoy the world he knew and loved while he was still above ground. The irony, he was well-aware, was that he was the very best at what he did, but the one thing he had no power over was the thing that everyone else took for granted: his health. Doc wins big against Ike, but he feels like the biggest loser at the table. And all his “fabulous luck” (i.e.: his skills as a psychologist and poker player) turns out to be little more than cold comfort. But he knew how that hand would play out. So he got a little drunker than usual. A little meaner, too. He stirred the pot more than Wyatt may have wanted, but Doc was a chess player as much as he was a poker man. With his remaining time, he wanted to flush out the little cowboy problem they had in Tombstone. To make life easier for his friends and the townsfolk. Doc’s actions may have seemed reckless and uncalculated to some, but he was always ten steps ahead of everyone, including his friends. And he was never that drunk. In many ways, he really was in his prime. And that’s the tragedy of Doc Holliday.

    Stephen Lang said he was drunk for most of his scenes as Ike, in order to create the kind of realism that was needed to portray Ike. The biggest irony is after filming was completed, Lang had to check into a hospital in Glenwood Springs, CO to get treated for kidney stones brought on by the fact he drank so much alcohol, but drank very little water. Glenwood Springs is also the same town that Doc Holliday died in.
