  • Ever since childhood, many of us have heard the notion of "being yourself." As we grow and enter the workplace, we become masters of manipulating how we show up whether that is through mimicry, telling people what they want to hear or even engaging in facade creation, confirming to values that we don't believe in, wearing "the mask."
    Leadership consultant, researcher, and rebel against the status quo, Kevin Sansberry's talk centers on investigating the research and factors involving why many spend their lives wearing masking with hopes to evoke a journey of introspection, reflection and perspective shifting. Kevin Sansberry, II is a leadership consultant, researcher and nonprofit executive. He is a rebel against the status-quo, a seeker of justice who strives to lift underrepresented voices by combining experience in organizational development/effectiveness with research expertise in destructive leadership, organizational culture and coping to provide solutions informed by best practices balanced by cutting edge research. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    Everybody wants to feel like they fit in, the issue is that there is no 'normal' everyone is just mimicking everyone else and going along with the accepted societal 'status quo' this is why it's so important to be authentic and allow others to show their true selves as well. Thank you Kevin for the encouragement to do so!

    Such a great job, Dr. Sansberry! I lived with that mask for many years and am so grateful that I never have to wear it again!

    My workplace is rife with toxic niceness! I love that someone is drawing awareness to this concept. The way my manager plays 'nice guy' is absolutely just avoidance and it affects the rest of us in the exact way this guy is talking about.

    I really enjoyed this talk, especially the part about the four horsemen of fakeness. Very accurate tell-tale signs.

    Want to know a sure fire way to get the job? Know their "core values" before the interview and you look heaven sent to the interviewers.

    I think we start wearing the mask a lot sooner than when we enter the workplace. Maybe it's a little more prevalent there but the mask he's talking about is created a lot earlier than we realise.

    Are we ever really given an opportunity in our youth to really discover what values are important to us?

    • @sansberryk
      @sansberryk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In most cases no. Unfortunately, most people tend to respond to values that are important for others hence why the mask exists in the first place! I appreciate you watching.

    Burnout is a huge issue, we all know it yet those who suffer from it seem to be trapped because we all have these structures and responsibilities to adhere to. Employers know what an issue it is and ‘address’ it by offering EAP and debriefs and all kinds of things- basically anything that looks like they are doing the right thing except for reducing workloads. What is worse, you burn out and leave, along comes the next eager beaver ready to do all you did and more just to prove their worth because they also have those responsibilities to adhere to. Everyone is replaceable. The best thing we can for ourselves and others is work to our healthy capacity in our allotted hours and show employers what is realistic.

    Brilliant Kevin, I wonder if COVID has changed that in some ways now.

    • @sansberryk
      @sansberryk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I definitely think so. In some ways, remote working has facilitated a decrease in people "wearing the mask" as much. However, I think this is a bandaid fix and only short-run. At the end of the day, I think it is essential for organizations and individuals alike need to be intentional about this process of discovery.

      Yeah, there is one thing about cohesion but how can an organization truly embody inclusion if our idea of "culture" is a "cult?

  • @jonrhome
    @jonrhome 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think a lot of this can be avoided by just working in a place that suits who you are and what you believe, right? Like if you're an environmentalist don't work in the mines and then get upset when they don't want to use your ideas.

    The stuff he says around 5:35 is really poignant, I don't think people realise just how well courage and vulnerability go hand in hand, and when they're exercised, especially in a workplace it can be a really powerful way of bringing people together.

    Diversity inclusion in the workplace- le sigh! I worked in the disability industry, so you would think inclusion is just second nature- NOPE! The corporate limb of the organisation is still all about making it ‘appear’ they are inclusive when it comes to employees and they kept coming up with new buzz words and structures and all kinds of flashystuff that never solved the issues. In one of my last training days, HR come in and asked us what we feel needed to change (because the employee satisfaction survey came back very low that year). I shared that they needed to stop changing the names of things so it sounds more inclusive and actually be willing to listen to staff address the concerns which weren’t new because we had been voicing them for years. They were stumped, and I left a few months later. Once the mask was off, I couldn’t stay there any longer.

    It's a shame that peoples options are so limited they have to go and work in places that aren't suited to who they are as people.

    I can't help but wonder what happened to make him have such high moral values that he'd call the cops on his mother at the age of five. I know he was just a kid but that's a bit much in my opinion.

    I agree and I also don't agree. I think more importantly, we need to exercise our right to just be human - to have boundaries and not spend our energy in places it doesn't serve us.

    I understand what he's saying about 'we're only inclusive if you think like us' but surely that's the right of the people running the business? Like why would you want to hire someone whose morals aren't aligned with what you're trying to achieve in your business?
