    I'm American and I have heard of and eaten all of these cakes except for the grapefruit one. Those of you saying they aren't American haven't been to many cookouts, potlucks, and other gatherings. They are all popular cakes (except for the grapefruit one).

      +Amanda Jade Well, just because YOU have heard of it doesn't tell us what percentage of Americans have heard of it. I've never heard of any of these cakes except the Boston Cream Pie. I could make a cake called Tony's Mustard and Mushroom Chocolate Broccoli Cake, and, yes, it would be an "American Cake" because I'm American and I made it. And I could force my mom and my sisters to eat it. And then my mom and sisters could post on TH-cam "I've heard of Tony's Mustard and Mushroom Cake". So what? The question to ask is what percentage of the American population knows about this cake? 75%? 1%? It matters.

      +Crystal Except he's correct. Typical mass produced American sweets are excessively sweet compared to many many other countries. And cake in of itself isn't particularly sweet, it mostly comes from icings/fillings/toppings. Marshmallow fluff, whipped cream and custards are usually really heavy on sugar.

    • @xXCARTAXx
      @xXCARTAXx 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      i'm sure that by, "it's sweet" they meant that it's overly sweet. americans due to tend to make things excessively sweet. if you tried other "sweets" from other countries, you would find out that the sugar levels are completely different. it's subjective.

      +King Doomfist A few of the Brown Derby restaurants were in the shape of a Derby hat. In "Mickey and the Beanstalk," the giant villain walks by and places the building on his head to wear as a hat. That's probably why you thought of Disney.
      I think there were four total Brown Derby restaurants in LA back in the day and they were Old Hollywood haunts. . They've all been demolished but one, but I don't think it's open anymore.

      I grew up with dirt CUPS, not CAKE. The reason they were called that was, because it has the appearance of mud and dirt (I don't see any whipped cream in it) and many times gummi worms are added to it. While their is a version made with a brownie crumble, the Oreo crumble is the best hands down.

    • @sethbush509
      @sethbush509 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      No it is not. True red velvet uses a slightly different liquid ingredients than your standard chocolate cake. Namely using buttermilk and vinegar which is typically not present in most chocolate cakes. This mixture reveals the natural red hues of chemicals in natural cocoa and makes the cake more fluffy. This red hue was enhanced by beet juice.
      True, a lot of modern recipes don't use this, but rather make a standard chocolate cake and add in red food colouring. However, those recipes aren't imo true red velvet cakes.

      +AN HE well clearly they exist as theyve done research - it's just that theyre probably not as popular as other types of cake but the rest of the world HAS the other cakes so they had to do ones that were specifically American .

    I love these vids where they try American foods but I always can't help but feel it's not a true taste test bc that food was most likely prepared by an Irish baker/chef following a recipe they found online. Some of these things can only truly be tasted on someone's grandmas back porch around dusk

      +tyvek05 Actually it is totally American. It is German's chocolate cake , not German. It was named for the chocolate manufacturer, not the country of Germany. Most Germans wouldn't even know what you are talking about if you said 'German chocolate cake'.
