The cook was putting rat poison in the stew. That big green box said “rat poison”.

As to why Jonathan was using a rifle to kill himself, it was likely the only firearm to which he had access. Probably his father's hunting rifle. Also, lunch lady was pouring rat poising into the food she was making.

This episode had to be delayed as it was set to air right after the Columbine High School shooting in the United States. Sad that high school shootings are still an issue, and even worse, 25 years later.

It's kinda wild that Elie hit this episode just shortly after the Uvalde massacre.

Yeah I remember, Buffy had to go on pause for a couple of months.

Actually, they aren't an issue. They rarely happen. Crimes happen all over every day. The media for political reasons, make them big stories. But, in the inner cities of America, murders happen every week end, but somehow that isn't an issue.

    1. This episode wasn't banned. It was pulled from airing on its regularly timed scheduled because of the Columbine school shooting. Crazy how nothing's changed after all these years.
    2. Buffy's reaction to finding out her mom and Giles hooked up was great. Loved how Sarah paused and sat up quickly LOL. Poor Joyce, she's trying so hard to leave that room as quick as possible. And then Giles bumping into the tree, which btw wasn't part of the script but Tony (Giles) wanted to add that for laughs.
    3. OMG Elie, I can't believe you missed it. The camera even zoomed in closer to the lunch lady so you can see what she's pouring in the pot lol. Xander caught the launch lady pouring rat poison into the food. That's why he runs out the kitchen and starts throwing people's lunch trays onto the ground to keep them from being poisoned. So this would make it Xander's 3rd time saving the day. Awesome.

Last week on my birthday Tuesday, 19 children were killed and two teachers in the Robb Elementary school shooting. I live in Texas just 4hours away from the school. And yeah I've been crying daily reading about each children and teachers life who they are and what they liked in life and I cry for those poor babies having to go through terrifying horrific day like that in their elementary school. Glad you watched this episode and understood the importance this show helps aware that mental health with everyone dealing with their own pain.

19, 21 - it keeps changing. I'm not liking the lack of proof which has become stranger and stranger as the years progress on these stories. Especially, since this specific school district made headlines not too long ago when local police were teaching young boys on how to run and shoot targets scary similar to a school shooting.

    • @reactorhighlights1251
      @reactorhighlights1251 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@xejelah The proof is overwhelming. Don't fall for insane and dangerous Alex Jones type of far right conspiracy theorist lies.
Also, the numbers haven't changed between 19 & 21, you're just missing the context. It's 21 total. 19 children + 2 adults. Sometimes the media is specifically referring to the number of children and sometimes they are referring to the total tally.
Even if the numbers had changed that can be explained by getting incorrect or not updated figures while trying to report what's going on or when the injured later pass away at a later date.
Not everything is an insane conspiracy theory. Use critical thinking and keep a wide range of sources.

@@xejelah Lack of proof? This isn't a conspiracy Alex Jones. 19 students died, 2 teachers. 21 people died overall.

i remember being 18 when this episode was to come out. we as fans did things like go to shady websites that had just the audio of the episode that people found and posted. i read the script that was posted on a site.

i've read a lot of teen murder mystery books...most likely people to commit a crime or school shooting are:
the journalist (knows too much about everyone)
a loner like a punk or goth or very quiet person (serious emotional or trauma issues)
popular kid (male or female doesn't matter...stress from that lifestyle makes them go nuts)

This was one of the best episodes of S3. Even though the tone is very comedic in terms of Buffy being able to read minds, it deals with potential mass murder, and teenage suicide. The writers did an incredible job to match these two themes throughout. The embarrassing Xander's thoughts, as with other teenage boys obsessed with sex, and Joyce's attempt to try and stop Buffy finding out that Giles had sex with Joyce are embarrassing and so funny at same time. Earshot is always a fan favourite, keeping up the quality of S3 episodes. It was if course not shown on tv at time as well it coincided with the Columbine massacre. It was a brilliant piece of writing.

It's not that it was banned. It's that it was originally due to air one week after the Columbine school shooting. In the days when mass shootings in schools happened a lot less often than now. So it was broadcast out of sequence, a few months later, out of respect for those involved.
Here in the UK, it was broadcast in sequence, cos we were a few months behind.

This is not a race Elie. Most reactors do 1 a week . you can slow down if you think you need to. 2-3 a day with editing and other shows. Be careful of TH-cam burn out. Its a thing. But as always, love the reactions!!

I like that you were so focussed on your thoughts about who the real killer might be that you didn't take in what was right in front of you with the lunch lady and a massive box with "RAT POISON" on it. I've been there, you're so caught up in your thoughts that you just don't process what you are seeing. Just don't do that while driving! :)

I said the same thing about the lunch lady's stunt double. Worse double ever. In a post I made years ago on a Buffy Facebook site where three people were watching the show for the first time and reacting to in, I wrote the lunch lady dropped like a hundred pounds during the fight. It was hysterical.

22:53 it is a monster of the week episode, these demons/monsters never show up again, This didn't further the season plot. It was a great episode but it was 100% a monster of the week episode.

So many Columbine comments, but no mention of the OTHER real world tragedy that connects to this episode. Even more interesting because the comnection is in the episodd itself. The writers took inspiration from the 1966 shouting on the University of Texas at Austin campus. Wherein the perpetrator did go up in the clocktower and with a rifle rained down death on innocent persons below. THAT is why Jonathan has a rifle in a clocktower.

    • @bfdidc6604

Yes. The Texas clock tower shootings are often considered the first American mass shooting of the modern age. There was a good movie called Targets (starring Boris Karloff) that was influenced by that incident.

This episode was supposed to air the same day that the columbine school shooting happened. When the news broke about columbine the episode was pulled out of respect for the victims and family's and aired after the season finally.

"A SENSITIVE EPISODE" To the point where not only is suicide a sensitive subject, but Columbine delayed the episode due to the week of said airing being when it was originally supposed to air. As such they postponed it until after they aired the rest of the season.
Missing the rat poison made for an interesting reaction.
