- I have been so excited for this game since development was first announced and it's finally here! Today we play Venba, a narrative cooking game where we play as an Indian mom who immigrates with her family to Canada in the 1980s. Follow along as we cook various dishes and restore lost recipes, hold branching conversations and explore in this story about family, love, loss, and more.

A noticeable detail I like is how the son eats the biryani with a spoon while the father is eating it with his hand as it's the more traditional way of eating rice (this is coming from a southeast asian who also eats rice with their hand)

The stained bubbles are for english they have difficulty understanding but the bubbles thar aren't blurry are Tamil just translated so we can undetstand it.
they also differentiate between the two languages by the font color, the english is always in yellow while the tamil is in white
It’s so funny because it’s actually kinda accurate, like when u don’t know fluently it’s like there’s just empty spots in the sentence

Although kavin irritated me through the game; I could actually feel my self relate to him. I related to me distancing from my culture. I finally embraced but I failed to do it before my grandfather died. If only I embraced it sooner maybe I could have connected with him more. My Spanish was crappy he couldn’t understand me either
Omg same, my moms from PR and moved to the states for school but moved back to have me with my dad. But after my brother was born he made us move back to the states and didn’t let us speak Spanish anymore and I lost it for awhile, he didn’t even let us listen to the music. it’s such a lost feeling, like I don’t fully fit in to either American or Puerto Rican culture and it’s frustrating af

I love watching this gameplay. So many emotions and I got a little sad when Kavin said he wanted to be normal that one really hurt.

- Murukku (crunchy, slightly salty fried dough usually eaten as a snack)
- paniyaaram (soft steamed dough balls that can be either sweet or salty)
- Meen varuval (Fish fried with spices and masala)
- Rasam (A thin, tangy, savory soup usually mixed with rice)

As the dautgher of two hispanics parent in many foreign countries except ours, I always loved to share food or experiences from both of my countries, even if the places where we were we didn't had as much difference as Canada and India, it always hurt me thinking that if I ever cook him any of this foods to my future kids, their will be ashamed of it.
I hope all people know how much culture is beautiful and its something we shouldn't be ashamed of

So the mask is a ward! From my understanding it operates a little similar to the Evil Eye from the Mediterranean. When I was living in Southern India (was only 3-4 months so not long) I saw them everywhere outside- especially at construction sites! Considering how the eyes followed Kavin at least once? I think it’s protective and familial. I wasn’t in India (Karnataka specifically) long enough to know all the intricacies, history, and meaning behind it but I hope what I shared is somewhat helpful!
Traditionally we keep those masks outside the house. It's supposed to contain a demon that will ward any other demons off from the house. No one keeps it inside the house, idk why it's inside here.

awww god i cried like an absolute baby bc of this. as a south indian (to be exact, malayali, so us and tamil are actual neighbours) i really really resonated with their experiences, especially kavin's as someone who wasnt raised in india and surrounded by western culture. i could most relate when he couldnt even speak tamil fluently, because thats what im experiencing-- i know english better than my own mother tongue. cant forget about the food ofc, i love and have eaten everything made here so i felt really connected. also learnt the recipes so thats awesome. this game really opened up the water gates haha this was soso heart warming

As a Tamil immigrant to the US, I never thought I'd see myself represented in a video game. People talk about diverse representation in media all the time, but this is the first time I've been able to experience that. Maybe I've missed out on other examples of Tamil representation, but this game really touched my soul.
I'm so happy Kavin was able to reconnect with his culture and mom. Really pulled at my heart on a personal level

My dad is from south India and a lot of this hit especially the rejecting of culture and internalized racism, for years I was ashamed of culture due to the bullying from others. I accept it now but the impact was already made, I don’t even know Tamil cause of how hard I rejected it.
As I stay in India, I didn’t realise how much the internalised racism can affect us Indians in foreign land. Obviously things are changing now, but I really have deep respect for immigrants out there who preserve and enrich their culture despite all these struggles.

I know other people told you already probably but the white text is Tamil, yellow is english and the spots in the speech bubbles mean Venma has difficulties understanding what's said
My parents both came from bangladesh. My father immigrated to america in the 90s to help with his family, by the early 2000s, he met my mother back when he got to bangladesh and they both decided to immigrate to america because my mother was pregnant at the time to have me. This gameplay has made me feel emotional being the eldest child to immigrant parents who have sacrificed so much for my future. Ive been through periods of poverty and now have times of wealth because of the sacrifices my parents have made. I am greatful for all they have done. Kavin is such a relatable character as being in america, (or cananda in this game!) can place you in a position where you have to embrace 2 cultures and carry that with you in life.
Wow. Me and you have a very similar story. My parents also came from Bangladesh and moved to the US. My mom was 17 and my dad 24, they met here and got married. My parents tell me stories of every job they've worked, from retail, gas stations, waiters, they have done everything and sacrificed so much for me to get here. My mom got her education here and now has a good job. My dad couldn't afford to go to college here, but he worked his way up and went back to school. Now we have a nice home and a good life, but i wish i was closer to my culture.
Depending on what state youre in, there is always cultural programs bangladeshi people make for their children- especially for pohela boishak! If you have a big university nearby with a significant population of bangladeshi people high chance they throw cultural festivals@@luvie2098
Im damn near in tears watching this let's play. I'm a child of immigrant parents from Haiti and i remember when I was young being ashamed of my culture's food or the way I spoke not knowing certain English words. Ugh. This hits home :(

i cried so hard while watching bc all of it just resonates with me so much and all of the details, the fact that the father writes poetry again after the park incident showing what Venba said about him only writing poetry when he's upset is true, the way Venba and Paavalan don't talk about it at all, Venba leaving Canada because she no longer feels at home since her husband has passed and Kavin has distanced himself
I was raised in a very similar situation and what Paavalan said about their child resenting them because of them not being able to provide everything other parents would be able to and how they might resent them for taking away this opportunity, that hits way too hard and I think I'm going to view my parents really differently after this, im going to make an effort to connect more with my culture and family while living and experiencing the culture of where im living
also the sound design i love how when Venba walks the churi makes noise as well

Ouch man. This game. I'm not Indian but I grew up being danish in the USA and I remember too how people would react to our cultural differences. Some of my classmates really judged us hard because we were "weird whites" who didn't eat pb and j sandwhiches but ryebread and stuff like it. I remember once getting judged so hard over the fact that our little family of four didn't celebrate Thanksgiving with turkey and we would eat rice pudding with almonds and cherry sauce on Xmas with was the 24th, being told I was wrong for doing that. Thankfully my sister and I could embrace our culture without caring so much, but I remember the whispers and comments kids would have to "weird food". I can imagine for Kavin it probably became too much with racist jokes or comments that he became ashamed of his background which is just sad to think about.
I’m first gen Cambodian American, and this hits close to home. You get a sense of inheriting a rich culture and customs, but also the conditioning of the environment around you making a point to convey you’re not conforming. Stories like this are very touching and relatable
I’m a second-gen Cambodian Canadian and it hits really close to home for me as well. Being connected with my culture in a vague sense, but still feeling isolated was always a point of contention growing up and till to this day. I understand some of the language, but I don’t speak it fluently and I don’t enjoy some of the food due to texture and smell issues. Part of me wants to reconnect, but I genuinely don’t know where to start because rediscovering it feels overwhelming. Maybe I can someday.

I am part Indian, my grandfather was Indian and my mom really liked him! Sadly he passed away not so long after my mom was just about to grow up into a tween/teen. One time when eating i think it was Chapatti with the yellow beans kind of thing, my mom smiled and told me "you eat just like your grandfather" and said "did you know that this is his favourite food?" I was younger that time and didn't think much of it other than (it's weird.. why is mom talking about grandpa?) I've never seen him before, and my mom didn't get to see him as she grew up. I didn't knew about him passing away early that time all i thought was (strange.. well just gonna continue eating then) i still cant believe i remember that one specific memory!
I live in asia, south east to be specific! I love so many asian food! Like Indian food, Malaysian, Chinese, my own county's food, thai..so much more! As a kid back then i wanted to be all kinds of things, and which included to be a master chef! Like a gourmet or whatever you call them, or just a restaurant owner but who also cooks and is a waitress there 😂😂 as a kid i thought i could do everything! But till this day i can't even cook fried rice without getting scared or kind of overcooking it!
And since I'm part Indian plus other ethnicities, I really wanted to make cultural food and well.. eat them myself, 🧍idk when i was a kid i didn't like sharing- dont knoe how my "imagery restaurant" would work well if i just eat the food i cook? But anyways-
I don't click much eith my culture, tradtions, etc.. it's sad- My native language? I can speak it but I'm bad at reading and writing it, it's funny how i even go to school like this!?
I don't pray that often, but i still go to sanctuary/temples if i can or wanted to- idk whatever English people calls them-
And my lack of skills of making a friend that's also native in the same country i am?? Hilarious- It's hard to even talk to a 7-9 year old, their grammar and speaking is better than mines!

seeing all the indian foods being cooked made me so nostalgic for my amma cooking but also really cool cause ive never seen it in games before! i never got made fun of for my indian food cause i lived in a diverce area but rejecting my culture because i never saw it in the media and was never represented hurt. this game made me so emotional oml thankq for playing it!!!!
That is such a beautful game. Diferently from Kavin, I'm third generation okinawan-brazilian (aka my grandparents came from Okinawa to Brazil and my parent were born and raised here) so this experience may resonate more with my parents. They have gone through the same process as Kavin, but never got to redeem themselves with my grandparents (their parents passed away) and can't speak japanese anymore. Then, with me, at least my ma said she wanted for me to learn japanese, but my father didn't (plus we never were close with the community when I was little). As Venba, we still kept contact with culture through food which still is an important bond for me. In the end, it is true that food is how some families demonstrate affection even with language barrier.
I feel so connected to this game. I also left my home of where I grew up, to move somewhere safer. The place I am now has a completely different culture that is difficult to acclimate to and my family is still back where I grew up. I miss them every day, but since moving I began to cook tons of food from my culture to share with my friends here and it has helped me feel connected to home.
I enjoyed watching this! I relate to it. My dad is from Zimbabwe and moved to the US. I'm not fluent in his native language, but am trying to learn more now.

As a Tamilian, this made me cry so bad, and made me appreciate my culture, I wasnt doing that before, i didnt feel the need to be connected with it i dont know why, westernization maybe?....AFTER WATCHING THIS VIDEO, i just realised howw many things that i have missed and forgot in my own culture that i grew up with.....I NEED TO GO SEE MY AAYA(grandmother)😭😭😭😭, things come up and i didnt have the time to visit her and my native place, she take care of these little things too, the thing that venba did, wiping kavin's mouth after feeding him, it reminded me of her....angry love is her love language, whenever i showed her something that i made or like wore a new dress, she'd say "azhaguuu tha po" in a cute angry tone..... there is so many things that i adore of her....

As a tamilan I can relate with everything venba and pavalan says .. all those small details from our culture, the food and its emotions are true and iam missing it. And the fact is I was the same as kavin. I left my home for uni, and here sometimes I just prioritize my surroundings and then my parents. Even now, when I visit them, they feel weird about my language and my body language and even mock me for that ( not in a bad way though). And I miss them sometimes and I love them a lot❤. Now I feel like I should say this to them or what if regret doing that just like kavin did......

watching you play this game made me realize how much i relate to this
my parents both left their life in eastern europe to raise me and then later my sister in the US because they wanted us to live a better life here, as compared to their childhoods in Europe, where both their families struggled. but as we (me and my sister) began to go to American schools, we started losing our skill in speaking the language that my parents communicate in all the time. we would look back at old videos of when we were maybe 3 and 5 years old, and you can hear my sister speak beautifully in that language. she could easily pronounce everything, and she would speak sentences at 3 years old that she cant even say now at 12 years old. we now tend to struggle with forming regular sentences, we cant even read or write in this language, and even worse we cant say a single word in our real, native tongue, only the secondary one. when we try to have conversations with our parents, we would often have to switch to english because we cannot go a single sentence without having to say atleast one english word since we struggle. nowadays, talking with relatives that are still back in our mother country is challenging because unlike with our aunt and cousin that have been learning more english from visiting us often, our grandparents use strictly that language, and more specifically the more traditional version, where they use more older words that even i cant understand very well. it breaks my heart that i cannot be as close to my culture compared to my friends who are also from the same country as me, even strangers that we hear on the streets. it scares me that later on, when i have kids, i wont be able to teach them about where im from because i wasnt close to it, and like how kavin said, it makes me feel like a fraud talking about my culture. but really, this game was beautiful. ❤
I feel the same as an immigrant from Eastern Europe as well :(( I was born there and grew up here, although I can kinda relate to Kavin in some aspects I was the opposite. Instead of being embarrassed of my culture, I wore it on my sleeve. My embarrassment came from me feeling I didn't know my native culture well enough to even be considered an Eastern European kid.
It didn't help that I didn't look Eastern European. Slavic people can often pinpoint other Slavic people by their facial traits, you start noticing those patterns of similar features a lot of us tend to share, and as a Slav yourself it becomes easy to tell. I didn't mind that Americans couldn't tell I was one based off looks, but when most other Slavs couldn't it made me feel insecure :(
I talked about it with my mother and she just straight up said I was American, I grew up here and had too many American traits. Can I not say Slavic American? Do I not get even that? Can only people who look the part say that? Only those who can read and write in their native tongue? I know she didn't mean it to, but that conversation hurt me.
At the end of the day I realize that there's so many nations and people and mixing and circumstances, and there's so many people like me in this melting pot. The decision of moving to a different country for a better life will have its pros and cons, but I'd rather be here in America. I love my roots but also I love my experiences here. I'm thankful my parents made that decision. Each person brings such a unique experience to the table, and this is part of mine ❤
I felt this but from an Asian background, I try my best to surround myself with other people who speak the language but I can’t help but feel left out sometimes. It sucks but I guess trying to learn my culture again and maybe eventually asking my friends to help me along the way will help me have a grasp of something I lost at a young age
I’m in the same place as you but it’s never too late to try. I hope you never give up or stop trying because no one can ever take your culture from you. You can still teach your kids with you families help or you don’t have to. But you’re not fraud!!!❤️❤️❤️
You can still learn the language. If your language has a lot of speakers like Russian or Polish you can just watch memes or YT channels and also just learn the language traditionally. Its never too late and your parents will feel so amazing to be able to speak to you in their native language, even if you didnt learn it completely from them!

Cried buckets... I feel this a lot... being Tamil, growing up in Europe, only difference is, I moved in 5th grade. The way I tried to never take rasam rice for lunch because I felt it "stank". I changed by normal indian accent to an american one because I was mocked by my teachers and wanted to sound "truly fluent". Losing all touch with tamil language. Finally I couldnt take it anymore, I felt I was two different people, like I was putting on too much of an act, and decided to join my parents in moving back to India after my education... while I still miss europe at times I definitely feel at home here :)

I am a Tamizh girl from south india and this game is incredible in every way. There are Easter eggs hidden in every part of it - from the initial quotes on the black background (they are by a famous ancient literary figure called Thiruvalluvar who was credited with writing many philosophical zingers back in the day! Interestingly, the Thirukkural - the compilation of his poems - is in the venba style ) to the 'sheet calendar' on their wall, the story of how Kavin's parents met during protests and parental opposition to heir marriage, the song title in the end that translates to 'Happiness'....i have never been more in love with a game before. Despite living in India for a large part of my life I have grappled with so many themes here and I can remember many such conversations with my own parents. Thank you for this gameplay. I will now go back and look at my mother's recipes.

i think the blurry dialog might have been a nod to venba not being able to understand what he was saying. speaking and understanding english was something that was hard for her after all.

Communication is what stands out the most from this game, the way the parents got each other’s backs, the way the mother answers her little son’s questions, also there’s similarities between these two but differently at the same time.
See how the mother left her family right after promising her own mom that she’ll be back and yet she lost her, also the son did the same thing when he moved to college.
The difference is that mother felt sorry for leaving or for losing her mom, unlike the son who was desperate for moving away a bit.
But we can’t blame neither of them tho.
This is a small detail but I like how they put the beef in the biryani, bc a lot of people think that all indians are vegetarian, and that all indians worship cows. While both are true to some extent (20% of Indians are vegetarians and cows are worshipped in Hinduism), there are several indian families (like my own) that can eat meat and beef.
0:00 It's called a Kural. It's one of 1330 Kurals written at least 2000 years ago in the Tamil language. Those Kurals are collectively called as Tirukkural. Tirukkural is comprised of three sections (Paals): 1. Arram (Virtue), 2. Porul (Wealth & Polity), and 3. Inbam (Love). It teaches us how to be virtuous, manage wealth, run a government, show love, etc. in a short and concise manner. It is one of the most translated books in the world.
1:07:06 so your question regarding the blurry bubbles, you can see here where the recipe book is in Tamil whereas us, as the audience, first saw it in English. And when Venba asked Kavin to speak in Tamil, again it was in English. So I suspect when the bubbles are blurry Kavin is speaking English like when he's translating for his mother on the phone with the boss.

IM SO HAPPY IVE STUMBLED UPON THIS AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As a fellow dev and someone who ate a lot of this food, it was such a wonderful sight to see this project come together!
I'm an immigrant from the Middle East (but I'm Malayali) and this game is indeed sad but beautiful at the same time. I can relate to this. My family struggles to fit in at times, despite being in a place filled with Indians and a diverse place. My little brother never embraced his culture or his ethnicity and it breaks my heart seeing him do so because he wanted to become "American". My parents are getting old and it's sad seeing them struggle to give us a good future here. And seeing all of these dishes makes me happy. I always regret not learning Malayalam properly. This game is amazing.

I hope this doesn't seem inconsiderate but I love games like these ^^ for their simple but meaningful and important stories - and with food involved! After watching this playthrough a couple times I asked my fiancé if we could get some Indian food for dinner as we were wondering what to get. I didn't know if the restaurant would have specifically South Indian food but lo and behold, one of their classic dishes was Tamil Biryani! And I can't get over Parotta! I grew up with more appreciation for Chinese and Japanese food - not to mention my own cultural foods such as Indonesian, traditional English and Irish. South Indian food was not often my choice. But thanks to this game, I've remembered how freaking good it is!!! ^^

As someone who was sent overseas by their parents for the sake of more opportunities and better education, I really connected with this game. As someone who's tamil (and NOT tam-brahm), it feels unreal to have my culture represented ehre with ACTUAL meat dishes unlike the brahmin folks who made it look like 99% of south India are pure vegetarians. I feel so touch rn, these are dishes are words we use in my household and a lot of my love for cookiing came from watching my mom, and my grandma cook in the kitchen.

I didn’t think much about this game - “Oh cool, a game similar to how me/my parents lived!”. Just cool. Every five minutes in this game I keep crying from my own memories and I haven’t a clue why . It’s too close to home 😂 in a way I’m used to these feelings/situations not being publicized.

I didnt know i would end up crying so much. although I've never had an experience with migration, there was just so much nostalgia of me being in the kitchen with my om, and how much food is a part of our culture and day to day communication, everything is food, festivals, mourning, celebrations, rituals, sickness and health everything has a food attached to it, and love with which it is cooked. it just reminded me of the time i would spend in the kitchen with my mom doing my homework while she cooks, learning so much subconsciously and just so much smells that have filled my heart with joy and bittersweet memories. thank you for this play through and kudos to those who made this game! it was a feast!
