In the last seconds of the third round, Joe knocks Nick down once more. Each second is an eternity, but Bruiser isn't moving. Then ten count rings out through the arena, the ref steps into the ring and raises the astonished Joe's arm. Bruiser had suffered a hairline fracture in his skull that had gone unnoticed for years, and somehow Joe managed to split it open. The man's brain hemorrhaged, and he died in the ring, but despite this, the decision held. He had passed his pre-fight exam and Joe had scored better. The shock of having killed a man, as well as the unexpected status of lineal champion shook Joe to his core. Over and over, he lost, his nerve failing him in every fight. This is actually kinda possible. In Mike Tyson's punching, it is correctly shown that, early on (first 90 seconds in game) Tyson is an absolute monster and will pulverize you, but after those 90 seconds, he slows down, and you can hit him. Just like url, where Tyson tends to lose if his opponent can weather the storm.

@@ApolloKirl, in the Fantasy World of Punch Out!! (where Cartoon fighters like Great Tiger and Mr. Dream exist), Mike Tyson killed each one of the opponents, except for Mr. Sandman (OP character wtf)
I'd like to imagine Glass Joe was the most humble boxer in the game, and just boxed for fun... until someone very arrogant got him mad enough to really show his true skill. Thus he kicks this guy's ass, giving him that one win... The guy he beat... Doc. He learned from the experience, and went on to train the champion. Doc left boxing, but kept up with the sport in general. By the time Glass Joe fights Little Mac, Joe is already old (relatively old), and so is Doc.
Reggie Strickland comes to mind. He had well over 200 losses. However, he was there to give upcoming boxers a few rounds of experience and a W on their record. However, the story goes, that if a "prospect" was a jerk to Reggie before the fight, Reggie would show his true skills and KO his opponent.
Wait a minute... If Glass Joe is this bad, then why does he have his own boxing school? And why would Gabby Jay and anyone else decide to go to it? If anyone wanted to get good at boxing, why would they get taught by someone with 99 losses and 1 win?!
He may have been decent at another level. However, when he decided to go to a pro level; he couldn't cut it. That's just a theory. Please don't consider this cannon by any means.
Nick Bruiser was absolutely dominating that fight, already knocking him down 2 times. Nick Bruiser then performed his leaping attack to try and finish him off. Right when Nick was about to hit him, Glass Joe ducked low, lunged forward, raised his head back up, and wound up hitting his head on Nick’s nuts, resulting in Nick landing awkwardly and leaving him down for the count, and giving Glass Joe the KO.
Theory: Glass Joe is secretly an almighty god and his first win was when he accidentally destroyed his opponent. So he decided to make himself a weakling so he doesn’t accidentally destroy anyone else.
Theory: Glass Joe accidentally switched up his wins for his losses, which means that to him, his record is 99 wins to 1 loss. That's why he hasn't retired from Boxing. Because he wants to continue his so-called "win-streak" Edit: For all you SNES Punch-Out!! dweebs, here's some Fun Facts. 1.Heike Kagero isn't a girl. They're actually *male*, due to the fact that the Wikipedia for Hieke Kagero states: *In the SNES version of Super Punch-Out!!, he sometimes swings his long hair against his opponent.* 2. Aran Ryan is a color swap of Piston Hurricane. 3.Pretty obvious, Mad Clown is a clone of Bear Hugger. And finally, despite being terrible at Boxing, AND having the same record, AND coming from France, GLASS JOE IS NOT GABBY JAY. (Stop it, you overly-obsessed mystery solvers.) Piece o' cake.
When you look at everything there's a decent explanation. First ask yourself "Why would Glass Joe get the opportunity to fight Bruiser?" The fight was an exhibition set up by a shady advertising firm, but Bruiser had a car accident a few weeks before the fight. Of course the ad agency knew who Glass Joe was and assumed Bruiser would still be fine despite any potential injuries. The ad agency bribes the WVBA doctor to clear Bruiser for the fight despite the accident. *Ding ding* and Bruiser wails on Glass Joe relentlessly for a full 50 seconds before Joe goes down, as the referee is counting though Bruiser's blood is flowing and his adrenaline is pumping and he starts feeling a build up of pressure in his skull .*ding ding* Bruiser hears his cannon and begins his onslaught, but he notices his fists aren't quite keeping up, but no worries, Joe can't catch the rythym and goes down after just a few blows connect. Bruiser walking back to his corner finally realizes the pain he's in, his vision starts to blur and sounds are echoing within his head, despite not being touched Bruiser is getting dizzy and confusion is stealing his skill. As Joe gets up from his second down he notices Bruiser seems tired and distracted*ding ding* Joe sees a tiny opening as Rick stutters on his opening punch and Joe manages to land a solid hook to Rick's temple. Rick screams in pain falling to the ground clutching his head, but he manages to get to his feet before the 10 count, though something is obviously wrong with him.*ding ding* Joe goes on the offensive landing a flurry of body blows, to no effect. Rick getting irritated throws a wild haymaker that Joe barely manages to block, but his hand is broken in the process. The attack throws Rick off balance and leaves him open for another shot to the temple by Glass Joe. Bruiser goes ragdoll and is out for the count. An investigation is launched as drug tests are conducted doctor's perform full body scans on both fighters and the WVBA discovers a breach in protocol the doctor didn't perform any kind of x-ray/ct scan during the pre fight physical on either contestant. The investigation uncovers Rick's car accident and concludes that given the events of the fight it's impossible to 100% prove that Rick's skull injury was a result of the fight or the wreck. The WVBA chairman holds a vote and Bruiser's loss is nearly unanimously thrown out, the one opposition is Bruiser's manager, who says that Bruiser insists that even if his loss is overturned Joe still won the fight and it would be inappropriate to take that win away from him. The WVBA is stunned, afterall Joe also finished the fight with a fairly serious injury and with the doctor's screw up there's no way to know if the injury happened before or during the fight. The decision is made, Joe keeps his victory, but Rick Bruiser is also officially redeclared undefeated
I swear I heard Glass Joe beat one of the highest ranked boxers due to a major fluke. Like high ranked fighter literally fell into an uppercut after losing his footing or something. The combination of the fall and the uppercut ended up knocking out the high ranked fighter, giving Glass Joe his one victory.
My theory is that glass joe beat vodka drunkensky, but then when nintendo changes his name to soda popinsky the WVBA also changes the name of his records but they forgot to change the name of glass joe victory and now he still has his victory, but it is against someone who "technically" doesn't exist in the association
he thought it'd be so easy he could beat him so he challenged himself to be blackout drunk to make it harder and he passed out right after joe punched him, which technically counted as a win
I like to think that the W.V.B.A covered up nick bruiser's loss, but felt bad for Joe so they didn't remove his win Or another theory I really like is that glass Joe got that win on bruiser before all of his losses, then Nick beat him so bad that he was barley able to fight again. The W.V.B.A then banned nick bruiser and allowed the severely beaten glass Joe to continue fighting
I dont think thats how wins/losses count. It also couldve been a TKO win too if he won by points alone. The thing with glass joe is he throws alot of upwards rights and i think its because that was his winning punch he wound up relying on it heavily. Whats interesting is in the Bull fight when he does his bull charge move a similar glass joe style right is a quick counter to take him out.
I think the punch out and super punch out it two different timelines where glass joe beats nick bruiser. Which starts punch out then he lost or retire before nick even show up which start super punch out
I beat-a the cold! Mario fed me-a mushroom soup and I grew giant.. It-a was fixed when Mario threw a goomba at me-a! Then, a giant cat paw rebuilt everything..
I'm thinking of the Simpsons episode where Homer fights Drederick Tatum, and Moe tells homer to picture how he's going to win and homer imagines him winning and the announcer saying "Due to a congenital heart defect, a fatal heart attack has befell Tatum moments before he stepped into the ring."
I love how seriously he says “if there was an encounter between Lil Mac and Glass Joe prior to the first Punch Out game it wasn’t sanctioned by the WVBA”
If Glass Joe has his own boxing school, and winning a match against him both gives you a win on your record and lets you graduate, what if one of Glass Joe’s STUDENTS lost to him? That would explain the win because the boxers are inexperienced enough to actually go to Glass Joe’s boxing school.
I introduced my cousin to Punch Out one Thanksgiving, after going all the way to Bald Bull (and proceeding to mess up the Bull Charges) I handed him the controller and taught him how to play. His first match against Glass Joe was hilarious and sticks to me, cause the dude (and he's not like some toddler or anything, we were both teenagers when this happened, and he's pretty good at fighting games) managed to go three rounds with Glass Joe, and LOSE by decision to the judges, and I still laugh at that
CSmiley while I agree with your point of newer games being easier, the kids who played the game probably expected the game to be a “spam punch to win” game. Going in with the wrong mindset would not end well. If these kids got a rundown on how to play the game + a few tips then they would probably beat glass joe.
I've always preferred the narrative that he beat Mr. Sandman in his first fight, which pissed him off so much that he beat Joe senseless in the rematch and caused so much damage that became a shadow of what he was, thus starting his perpetual losing streak
I remember seeing somewhere that the only reason Glass Joe beat Nick Bruiser was because of a freak accident in the ring, so I always took it as "Glass Joe can have his 1 'win' but Nick Bruiser never officially lost"
Glass Joe actually did beat someone but the thing is, Glass Joe was in the ring with someone who had a heart attack and went into cardiac arrest. He ended up being given the win without any punches pulled since the person died, so that is why. That is legit the actual answer.
I really want to see this franchise continue. What if we got a game that is a prequel, and stars a Doc Lewis in his prime? It would give us a “new” playable character, and open up the opportunity for a new roster of opponents. Maybe even have an opponent be the father of someone that Little Mac went up against. Kinda like a Mayweather Jr and Sr situation.
Rainbow Dash you just proved my point. Mr dream never won the title from Tyson. Mr dream was nothing but a paper champion put in by the wvba to unjustly take tyson's title.
Let's not forget their years of turning a blind eye to blatant cheating in the ring during the '90s (kicking, spitting, elbow-dropping, wielding a FUCKING CANE)!
John Mckinley I'd always had serious concerns with them sanctioning matches between 107 pound Little Mac and heavyweights like Mr. Sandman, Super Macho Man, Piston Honda.
Its simple, from his look you can tell he's an amateur and scared so right before his first fight, Joe accidently broke a mirror with one punch thinking it was his opponent. That gave him one win and the nickname Glass Joe but unfortunately that gave him 99 years bad luck. So he defeated himself just like Jack Nicholson said in the Shining, "I think...he did it to himself" but hey that's a movie filled with unanswered questions.
One thing I noticed about Glass Joe, if you just start going ham on him and don’t actually land punches, he starts getting way more dangerous (still a wuss though). I literally NEVER saw him throw that hook even once during my first few dozens of plays because he was too busy getting punched in the face.
glass joe was the barrier between those who thought punch-out was another "mash buttons" fighting game and those who came prepared. he is a glass barrier, but still puts up quite something.
There’s kinda a Punch Out game, not officially made by Nintendo though. Its a VR game that works like Punch Out too Its called Knockout League if anyone has a VR Headset and wants to try it too, its a pretty tiring game too since you gotta dodge all these attacks and throw some punches.
As a boxing fan, I can attest that when a boxer has like a 1-50 record, his 1 win is often against an opponent who is 0-4. As an example, Andrew Hartley is 2-28, and his wins are against 0-4 Jeff Lee and 0-1 Charlie Zelenoff.
As someone who has been in over 50 fist fights and only won 1. I can tell you your opponent has to be exceptionally bad at fighting for you to get that 1 win.
@@bluex610 thats why u haven't made it ... that's what seperates professional athletes from normal people there willing to fail a million times before winning
@@lanceknightmare your experience could easily be flawed what if everybody u fought was just really good at fighting and the one guy u beat was just a little worse
Glass Joe was the quintessential B-side opponent. He serves a purpose in the sport, and that is to help build up your record. I hope Glass Joe is doing well in retirement.
Maybe the next Punch Out game will expand the deep lore of the series and explain this. If it follows the series' naming conventions, it'll be called Super Punch Out
People thought Metroid was dead after other M, but then along came Samus Returns. For that matter, Punch Out seemed to be dead after the SNES game, then along came the Wii game. Knowing how much Nintendo likes to milk their franchises, we'll probably get another Punch Out eventually
Yeah but the WVBA doesn't seem to care if you throw kicks, spit in opponent's eyes, or beat them with canes. I don't think they're terribly well regulated.
Maybe the qualification to graduate Glass Joe's boxing school is to beat him in an officially sanctioned match, kind of how the Ultimate Fighter finale is just a straight-up UFC bout. That's probably where the majority of his 99 losses came from. And maybe 1 student was so bad that not even Joe could lose to him. Thus, his only victory.
My conspiracy theory: The real boxing world has different associations, so possibly Glass Joe got his 1 win in another boxing association. For example: - WVBA is in Punch-Out!! Nick Bruiser loses here. - But Super Punch-Out!! is another boxing association. Nick Bruiser won here. So yeah.
I always assumed Glass Joe's 1 win came from a forfeit...the other boxer just couldn't make it to the match. But then I guess that would also have to be true for Gabby Jay.
Or Joe fought an opponent who decided to try to cheat so badly (even by punchout standards) that they had no choice but to disqualify him and give Joe the win. How you could cheat more obnoxiously than Aran Ryan is beyond me
@@GreyWind1988 1: Maybe DK? He has 19 infractions and maybe Joe got the win because, at that time, it was considered animal cruelty abd...guess they gave him somethkng (even tho DK has 19 infractions qne Aran Ryan 20) 2: who's Joe
I only got into punchout because i heard it was a boxing game and as an mma fan i wanted to try it. Glass joe was really easy. King hippo not so much. Mike tyson...oof...lol
I always assumed Joe's thing is he's a pretty skilled guy he just...can't take a hit for the life of him. I could, realistically, see him with a few wins under his belt.
@@DarthCuda my headcanon is that nick has a perfect record because the situation was so absurd that he disregarded the loss, while glass joe held on to it and uses it as motivation to keep going
@@SharonisCarin321 My headcanon is that the fight between Nick and Joe was a freak accident that, in any other fight, both the winner's victory and the loser's defeat would've been removed, but the WVBA felt so sorry for the awful history record of Glass Joe that they decided to leave his victory intact, thus only removing Nick's defeat. I hope my English has been clearly understood.
I know I'm a little late on watching this, but Glass Joe's win was against Nick Bruiser, but it was a freak accident. I don't know what kind, by they let Glass Joe keep his win and took away Nick's loss
Looking back on this game as an actual boxer now it’s pretty funny how it is so strange. The way they wind up their punches and stuff, to the way the teleport (great tiger). When I was younger I grew up playing this, Zelda, and Pokémon. Nintendo will never be taken out of the number one company for anything technology.
The developer's explanation and high score strike me as a joke. It's much more plausible that Glass Joe and Gabby Jay fought twice amid the latter's training, with each defeating the other once.
LordBarros True, but in the Wii version, Piston Honda/Hondo also only has one loss, and he’s at the bottom of the major circuit, and his one loss is shown to be Mr. Sandman. I mean, I guess it’s not impossible, since records change pretty much every game, but I’m guessing he took one try at being champion, then just fought the scrubs beneath him.

Doc. He learned from the experience, and went on to train the champion. Doc left boxing, but kept up with the sport in general. By the time Glass Joe fights Little Mac, Joe is already old (relatively old), and so is Doc.
Delaware Mapping Glass Joe in title defense mode can kick some ass, he certainly has potential.
That is actually a really good theory.
So Isai but for boxing
This could make sense to be honest.

Amazing story.
Just replace Rick with Nick. :)

Glass Joe's first win was actually from Nick Bruiser, but since it was a "freak accident", it wasn't counted as a loss on Nick's record.
I wonder how the freak accident happened
Perhaps as it was a freak accident, the win later became rescinded, sometime in between punch-out and super punch-out.

It would give us a “new” playable character, and open up the opportunity for a new roster of opponents. Maybe even have an opponent be the father of someone that Little Mac went up against. Kinda like a Mayweather Jr and Sr situation.

Its simple, from his look you can tell he's an amateur and scared so right before his first fight, Joe accidently broke a mirror with one punch thinking it was his opponent.
