Is NOW the Time to Buy? | E39 M5 Market Analysis
The E39 is undoubtedly one of the best BMWs to wear the M5 badge and is arguably in the running for best performance sedan ever made, regardless of automaker. Personally, I love how simple BMW's approached the E39. Body style: Sedan. Transmission: Manual. Special Packages: None. What this M5 lacks in options is made up for with an incredibly engaging driving experience. But with price-tags ranging from $70-$75,000 for the E39 brand new, it's clear that this tailored athlete demanded attention from owners' wallets. Fast forward nearly 2 decades and depreciation has effectively run its course with the third gen M5 and values are now starting to slowly climb back up. With that said, there are a ton of factors that affect the value of this generation of the M5, so today's video is intended to analyze how these factors have influenced recent, published sale history on the automotive auction site Bring a Trailer.
Check out our E39 (non-M5) videos:

th-cam.com/video/05Xslfvn5zQ/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/P_zYp6-46p8/w-d-xo.html
To summarize, the most valuable E39 M5s will be the lower mileage, late model cars that have seen exceptional care, coupled with an interesting color combo. As far as exterior colors are concerned, the reds, blues, green, and even the white M5s proved to be the most desirable when looking at our data set. In other words, M5s painted anything other than the greys, silvers, or blacks had higher average sales prices. Similarly, the standard black interior trended lower in the average sales price ranking than its more vibrant counterparts (Imola Red, Le Mans Blue, Caramel, Silverstone). M5s fitted with Dinan's signature series upgrades were much more likely to see inflated sales prices than the standard E39, which is to be expected considering that some owners reported $70,000 install bills for the top of the line Dinan S3 package.
Our BaT data also supports the notion that reported damage is not likely to ruin the E39's value, so long as the necessary repairs were handled comprehensively and everything else about the car shows legitimate care. Along that same vein, M5s with 150,000+ miles did not sell for pennies on the dollar if they were well maintained, meaning that there won't be huge discounts to take advantage of just because the car has been healthily driven.
I think the sweet spot for the E39 is in the $20-$30,000 range. You'll quickly realize why these cars are so well respected and be glad that you picked one up, but you have to be prepared to move quickly because you're competing with the likes of specialty dealers such as Enthusiast Auto Group. From my perspective, it is the near perfect E39 M5s with low miles, a desirable color combo, and the top tier Dinan Packages that are seeing considerable appreciation. I'd argue that there will still be "attainable" cars for awhile, they just might require a little more work and attention than the pristine examples.

Values for the E30 M3 are SOARING | Market Analysis
มุมมอง 8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
The BMW E30 M3 is the car that kickstarted the M3 lineage and proved that the German automaker was capable of delivering a car that could dominate both the circuit and the streets. Brought to the US for the 1988 model year, the E30 went on to sell over 5,000 cars to Americans during its production run for price-tags right around $35,000. Now, over 30 years later, the first generation of the M3 ...
Is the E36 M3 a Bargain? | Market Analysis
มุมมอง 50K4 ปีที่แล้ว
The BMW E36 M3 is often overshadowed by its E30 and E46 brothers, but the second generation of BMW's M3 has a lot of performance to offer for a reasonable price, comparatively. Although the E36 M3 is over 2 decades old with model years ranging from 1995-1999 for the US market, it's still a popular chassis for track builds which further proves that it deserves the M badge. These cars were built ...
How Much is the E46 M3 ACTUALLY Worth? | Market Analysis
มุมมอง 162K4 ปีที่แล้ว
The BMW E46 M3 has become a hot commodity recently. Everywhere I look, people seem to be demanding that you NEED to buy an E46 M3 NOW before prices skyrocket into entry level supercar territory. There is some truth here, but not every single E46 M3 on the market is going to sell for more than $50,000. There are a ton of factors that affect the value of this generation of the M3, so today's vide...

This is a challenging and time consuming DIY project that requires a lot of ...
Here's What's WRONG with the E39 | Supercharged BMW E39 LS3 Swap
มุมมอง 10K4 ปีที่แล้ว
The Supercharged BMW E39 LS3 Swap (say that 5 times fast) found its way back into the garage from some repairs after the First Drive video (link below). We discovered a small pool of oil accumulating under the E39 build after pushing it hard in the shakedown runs which prompted the quick action to address the culprit. On top of that, one of the drive wheels on the Supercharger belt failed and s...
Everything You NEED to Know about the E46 M3! | 3 Year Ownership Review
มุมมอง 63K4 ปีที่แล้ว
I've owned my 2002 BMW M3 for 3 years, and in that time I've put a little over 20,000 miles on the clock (~85,000 total miles at the time of filming). The E46 M3 is undoubtedly the greatest car I’ve ever driven, even when taking some of its unflattering flaws into consideration. This chassis is incredibly balanced and every component of the car aids in delivering the most raw driving experience...

มุมมอง 59K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome to the Tire Kickers channel! We're stoked to finally share what this BMW E39 is like to drive after spending 5 months in the garage being fitted with a new breathing apparatus. In case you missed the introduction video (link below), this car used to be a 2000 BMW 540i with the stock 4.4L V8 M62 engine before the drivetrain was completely re-engineered. The heart of the E39 is now the 6....
5 Reasons WHY You Should Learn to Drive MANUAL | Save the Manuals
มุมมอง 1.4K4 ปีที่แล้ว
What's up guys! Today I'm in my E46 M3 explaining WHY you should learn to drive manual. We all know that modern day automatic transmissions are much better at shifting gears to optimize fuel economy or, in the case of high performance vehicles with dual clutch transmissions, minimize time to shift between gears. So why should you even bother to learn to drive stick? 1. Manuals are cheaper to pu...
Introducing the E39 LS3 Build! | BMW E39 LS3 Swap
มุมมอง 53K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome to the Tire Kickers channel! In 2015, my dad decided it was time to ditch the tired and worn out 4.4L V8 that is standard in the E39 540i and begin the LS3 swap. The M62 BMW engine had seen 220,000 miles in its 15 years of service and the signs were clearly pointing to it needing a major overhaul soon. We have absolutely nothing against this engine as I still daily drive an E39 540i, it...

Replacing the Fuel Pump in 5 Minutes! | BMW E46 323i
มุมมอง 50K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Today I’m swapping the fuel pump on a 2000 BMW 323i. The vehicle has been experiencing fuel starvation, engine stumbling, and even some instances in which the engine has died. This is the factory fuel pump and has seen over 200,000 miles over 20 years, so I'm impressed it has lasted this long. Expect to pay between $300 - $400 for parts, with the OEM fuel pump being the big ticket item for this...
How to Bleed and Fill Engine Cooling System | BMW E39 540i
มุมมอง 49K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Today I’m bleeding the engine cooling system on my 2000 BMW 540i. I recently replaced the thermostat, meaning I introduced unwanted air into the system when I sealed everything up. This procedure will help extract the air and replace it with coolant so the engine doesn't overheat. This procedure is for a 2000 BMW 540i, which is fitted with the 4.4L V8 M62 Engine. BMW used this engine across a c...
Diagnosing and Replacing the Thermostat | BMW E39 540i
มุมมอง 9K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Today I’m replacing the Thermostat on my 2000 BMW 540i. It has been taking the car forever to reach operating temperature, sometimes exceeding 15 minutes before the needle in the temperature gauge reaches the center position. Even if the car had reached operating temperature, highway driving would cause the needle to drop towards the cold side of the gauge. I didn't have a check engine light, b...

Bought a 2003 e46 m3 last month, mines came with facelift features since it was late production car. Has 142,000 miles. I paid 15k. Titanium Silver/Imola red interior. Subframe done, vanos inspected and rod bearings but both look good and don’t need any replacement yet. Came modified, Apex Wheels, Tune, smg to 6 speed manual swap, Diablo exhaust. Honestly just want second hand thoughts on this purchase, since regardless it felt expensive for me to buy a 20+year old car for 15k, Thanks !

HINT: Remove the hose clamp and hose BEFORE you loosen the large retaining ring with your mallet and screwdriver. HINT: Install the new (blue) gasket on the fuel pump itself, BEFORE wiggling the whole assembly into the tank.

  • @MajorCaliber
    @MajorCaliber 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

The pulling the fuse step is a nice touch, BUT... if the pump is completely dead (usual case), it does zero good--engine won't start at all. BOTTOM LINE: you're going to spill a couple ounces of fuel from the hose when you remove it from the old pump, ergo... *have a rag handy,* simple. Also, leave the rear seat up/removed for a while, and *drive around with the windows down* to evaporate any spilled fuel.

Big three are a foot note here but in reality can swing the value of a car more then almost anything else. 120k miles SMG coupe 02 coupe with the big 3 done can sell for more then a 80k 05 manual with none of them done. The Big 3 are not nearly as expensive and painful as they used to be compared to to the price of the cars though. PS the statement about 04-06 having resolved the rod bearings and it not being an issue, uh nope still an issue. The root issue is idiots believed the 15k mile oil change and ended up sandblasting the bearings due to how tight the tolerance is. It’s being seen that cars that got oil changes every 3-5k miles and get the bearings replaced at 150k or even 180k miles were perfectly fine and didn’t actually need the work. It’s the fact that natural use of the mechanics will cause small shavings to get into the oil. 15k miles means you get way more tan 3k or 5k which is the problem. Kinda like how BMW advertised lifetime transmission fluid. Yeah if you want the lifetime of the car to be 100k miles.

Interesting that the one I just picked up for $25k is still right in line with 2020. Metallic Gray on black 71k miles SMG older enthusiast owned never tracked all upkeep done at BMW. The SMG is known for issues but the second it goes bad car will be a manual, the conversion isn’t that expensive and is easier to find someone to do then fix the SMG

I just traded in my 188k mile E46M3 for $12k toward a G87 M2. It's Vanos system was showing signs of an impending failure after a long, happy life (including an epic morning where I got 20 back-to-back runs on the Tail of the Dragon during Covid). I also drove her through two hurricanes, Snowmaggedon in Atlanta, and she made many treks between Baltimore and Florida over the years. I miss her dearly and I hope the young man who bought it treats her right....
