I wouldn't be so completly sure because to know if there was issues in his upbringing we would've needed to look at if from the inside. So many things seem "normal" from the outside but we don't really know unless we were close to the situation. Most situations of mental illnesses tend to be a mix of "nature" and "nurture" not only just one. It is super extremly rare for someone to be "born 'evil'". In his situation there could have been a lot of red flags that were ignored by the parents or others around him. Maybe the relationship between him and his mother could've been a bit toxic or maybe with his father but since it was in an area were people would see it as normal it could have been overlooked. The fact that they were very religious could also have an effect in his upbringing too since many (not always and depends where and who are in charge) religions and their rules can be so controling and demanding to the point that people would repress themselves and their emotions that can distort their perception of how things are or should be. Yes all these things can also depend on the predisposition of the person but the enviorment also has an effect. Like I said it is not only one or the other, sometimes it is an accumulation of internal and enviormental factors. And there are so many that no one really knows.

Scarily, she's currently being held in a maximum security psychiatric hospital, however her minimum tariff of 30 years is almost up. If she's deemed "fit" she could be transferred to a prison and be given the right to apply for parole! That's a damn scary thought!

Well life is complex. And sometimes (more likely very intelligent?) people can be totally evil and really nice at the same time? Like totally cruel and sadistic and taking great pleasure in causing massive pain to someone else, and shortly afterwards being really sympathetic and caring and comforting to a suffering soul? And neither is more false or true than the other, they are are just different ways of being. People can be very complex and can possibly sometimes in all honesty be both, maybe not at the same time, but in quick succession?

The story of Harold Shipman's childhood reminds me of an episode of the show My Super Sweet Sixteen in which a teenage girl who'd been in foster care for a couple years was adopted by a wealthy couple. In one scene, she was driven through her former, lower-class neighborhood and took that opportunity to trash it. She also shunned and cruelly mocked her former best friend for being too ugly and poor to be part of her "VIP" group.

Dr Shipman was my nephew's dad's family doctor, according to them everything was a complete shock and they did not suspect a thing. He apparently came across as a really nice and personable doctor, he'd go out of his way to help them and even did a few housecalls for them when one of the kids contracted the measles. They even picked up a perscription from the GP the morning he was arrested for his crimes.

Where his surgery was is my pharmacy, it gives me chills whenever I go in. I'm a patient at The Brooke and it freaks me out how much has happened 5 minutes from my house. Even my best friends nana had experience with Harold and he took care of a lot of her family members.

Hearing how he acted with his mother hit me too hard… my mom just finished treatment and she’s fine now but… the trauma of seeing her like that and caring for her day in and day out is just… god I wouldn’t wish it on anyone

Thank you so very much Eleanor! The way you tell these stories …. You have a gift!! It’s undeniable.
It’s very much appreciated that you don’t include sick details, and you always warn us so that we can skip the part. Thank you!
