      YESSSSS!!! The 5 that have Gemma's blood on their hands do NOT deserve to be taken care of ... they deserve to be put to work from dawn til dusk working their asses off to where they are so tired .. they have to choose whether they want to use their energy to shower/ eat or jus fall into their HARD bed, they do not even deserve a proper cushioned bed, or any fancy meals... BARE MINIMUM living is what they deserve and they should have to work their asses off for what little they earn to survive..

    Hi Eleanor I work with special needs children. Another term for “immature for her age” is *developmentally delayed* or you can say something along the lines of *her behavior and functional abilities were not quite meeting the milestones for her chronological age* I hope that helps at least a little bit!

    • @TeganThrussell
      @TeganThrussell 2 ปีที่แล้ว +110

      A shorter term that I was taught at uni was referring to these kids as "low" which is a shorter version of "on a lower developmental level". So a kid could be emotionally low, physically low, or cognitively low. There was an actual scale, that I can't remember because I dropped that course half way through, but it was a shorthand to tell other adults without other kids knowing what they're talking about. Low didn't refer to disabilities, so you wouldn't describe a kid in a wheelchair, or someone with ADHD as low, because that's a different thing. It was just for people who were on a lower level of development in a particular category, for any reason. It could be the result of a disability, mental health, the conditions of their childhood, or really anything.
      I just foud the single word a lot easier to have conversations about a child that needs extra support without all the other kids finding out and making a big deal over it.
      Does that make sense?
      I dunno. Just another term I was taught.

      Yup. I have severe tourettes syndrome and I've been teased and bullied for it my whole life. Doesn't really bother me anymore and I generally just joke about it myself to ease that tension, but as a kid it really made me feel out of place. And kids can be little shits to other kids and parents need to step in and actually do something about their little demon children who severely bully other kids. No one should feel like their disorder or disability warrants teasing or bullying and it starts with teaching kids to be more empathetic or smacking the shit out of kids who can't seem to learn that lesson with just words.

      In my home country Russia the parents sent a signed letter to the head of school because the teacher announced there would be a new kid in the class who happens to be autistic. They didn’t want that kid in their kids class because according to them “children with autism are unpredictable and can be aggressive and hurt our children. Our children will lag behind with learning because that kid won’t catch up with lessons as fast”.
      Now what do you expect from their children if the parents, grown people are the biggest bullies.

      @@lunaballuna Hii I don’t know if you saw this years Eurovision. But there was a singer from Norway, Tix , who has Tourette syndrome. He was bullied for years since his childhood, he even tried to end his life. They called him “ticks” and even wrote that word on his forehead. But now he’s a number 1 star in his country, he’s so loved and has a big fan base in Nordic countries but also in Europe. He took the power back by taking Tix as his artist name and wearing a headband on his forehand with Tix written on it.
      His song “Fallen angel” is about his childhood and his struggles.

I’ve lost my temper so many times at kids for simply bullying, I don’t like it and was brought up against it. @@TaurusGirl22 I'll have to look him up! I was called "glitch" growing up by friends and people I knew. My favorite comedian happens to have tourettes syndrome and he was on (I think it was) America's got talent. So funny and I really connected with his ability to turn something awful into humor. Alot of people don't realize that tourettes in some people can cause extreme pain. For me, I have a twitch in my stomach and one in my arm and the stomach one can cause me so much pain that I will vomit or have severe cramps while the one in my arm causes muscle stiffness and makes it difficult to move sometimes. They aren't just ticks, they can be debilitating and painful or even just embarrassing. I've had customers at my job ask me "are you dancing over there?" or "what are you doing" or "are you on drugs?" and they will laugh or just stare at me. My husband has really built me up. He never brought it up when we dated (even though his family thinks I'm defective, but they hate me anyway bc I'm American and not Russian like them, so I don't really care) and when people tease me, he really comes through with love.

      Same. This story was triggering for me. I could literally feel my blood pressure rising when Eleanor went into detail about the torture Gemma went through. And not only that but the overall lack of care that Gemma had received. I'm not at all surprised that Gemma wasn't properly diagnosed. As we all know the medical field fucking sucks especially towards women. And the guy that only showed up for 10 to 15 minutes to """assess""" whether or not Gemma needed assisted living REALLY pissed me off. People who are failed by the system are often targeted by bad people. If the people that Gemma should have been able to count on actually did their motherfucking job it's very likely that Gemma would have still been alive and well taken care of. She wouldn't have turned to the wrong people for acceptance and companionship.

      I have Asperger’s syndrome, which basically means I’m a high functioning autistic person. In most cases I can function like a “normal” person, but still have my weird moments. As a result of being on the spectrum, I’m sensitive to loud sounds, bright lights, people touching me, certain smells, and certain tastes. People used to make fun of me a lot because I would get scared at the sound of ambulance or police sirens that were really close to our school’s playground. They’d also make fun of me for being annoyed at the fire alarm in the school because it was loud. Other students would randomly tap me on the shoulder or rub up against my arm on purpose because they knew I hated it. The teachers actually tried to do everything they could to help, going as far as calling up these other students’ parents and having them apologize to my mom and I directly, but the next day they’d go back to being assholes and bullying me. As I got older and went through middle and high school, I had trust issues. I dated a girl whom I thought liked me, but she was simply dating me because her friends made a dare with her to do it. That’s when I put up an emotional wall and haven’t accepted new friends in a long time. I only keep in contact with two of my friends now and only with close family. I don’t trust people outside of my two friends and immediate close family members.

And if that was the case, I am aware that her family should have pushed harder but on the other hand I’m sure they also wanted to support her independence. The letter she wrote to the government very much sounds like it was written and sent by her... it’s possible her parents had no idea that she had asked the government for help in her daily life. There are so many factors that we don’t know about. @@ashleychildresss I completely understand what you're saying, and I don't blame the family at all. There were five people who killed Gemma, and only they can be held responsible for that. However, as mother to an autistic boy, I struggle just a bit to understand how Gemma's mum didn't step in sooner with regards to the housing, self-care etc. She was fully aware that Gemma struggled with this, and red flags maybe should have been raised when Gemma no longer allowed them into her flat. As a mother, your job, no matter how old your children get or how stubborn they can be, is to protect them. If something feels off, then you cannot ignore that. Even with children who don't have special needs. Gemma was incredibly, INCREDIBLY vulnerable and naive and her family were aware of this, more could have been put in place to help Gemma at home. That being said, they cannot in any way shape or form be blamed for the her awful murder. Like I said, we know who is responsible for that. The doctors and specialists she saw over the years should also shoulder some of the blame for Gemma's lack of quality of life after college. Girls tend to be harder to diagnosis than boys, but it was obvious, even back then, that Gemma was different bless her heart, and in her first 14 years of her life, how many people must have come in contact with her? And none of them recognised her difficulties? The mind boggles 🥺 but yes, just my opinion of course and I absolutely say this with complete respect. They are clearly lacking in empathy and courage, but they wouldn’t actively seek to hurt someone on their own. If they had some good role models, maybe they’d even become decent people. I can explain… a) people are just born bad. They just are. It’s a small minority, but it’s like their soulless from the birth. And b) Power and Control. Sweet Gemma was a toy, a useless toy they could break when it bored them. And because she was so easy to play with, the need to treat her worse grew. I bet that joke about being 16 was a lil streak of independence from their toy, so she had to be smashed and never be fixed. These people are subhuman, debasing scum, and Gemma was an little Cherub, given to her family as the BEST person, but this person met those creatures and the venom of power won. It is good you don’t understand. Keep your mind away from the darkness. It’s not good to have been in similar situations to know fairly well what happened here, like me.

      Definitely possible. However it is mentioned she was sent for chromosomal studies, so they 100% would have picked this up. More probable it was an endocrine disorder, perhaps a complete GH deficiency or perhaps partial Thyroid dysfunction in conjunction with GH deficiency. This would stunt growth, and cause mental developmental delay, as well as weight gain, amongst other issues. Honestly many things could have been causative and we don’t have enough information to deduce what was the true cause behind her disability. What I don’t understand is how either of these things could be “missed” (thyroid, GH, or esp Turner’s).

      It is awful here in the UK. It can be impossible to get help unless you have a family who will fight and fight for you, and most families are not medical experts so can't be expected to know the specialists you should be referred to. Plus some diagnosis such as autism will then remove you from help from other services such as counselling, as autism is deemed by many health authorities as 'incurable' - - true - but it's just an excuse as of course therapy still helps for issues that many autistic people have.
