I love season 2's opening. Great song, beautiful lyrics, amazing visuals. As a source reader, I remember crying the first time I watched it when the ep aired. The parallel between the two groups' descent, both with eyes full of hope and longing, the dynamic scenes of the chorus, then ending with the heartfelt hug. It's one of my favourite openings.
The fifth layer's sea of corpses is not one solid disk of water that blocks passage. Canonically the sea has large gaps throughout, it's just that taking the elevator is the most convenient way for people who can't fly (so pretty much everyone). Regarding the thermal vents and lizards in the sixth layer this episode... Nanachi briefly describes them in the form of a fairy tale to Mitty in Season 1 ep 13 (around the 23 minute mark). Also worth noting Season 1 ep 3, just after the opening song, Lyza narrates an observation of the "emperorshell" lizard that matures inside its shell that is unfazed by the "iron rain". They're all tied together. This show is very self referential. I picked up a LOT that I missed on the first go-around by rewatching the whole series after season 2 ended.
Wish you could take a good read at the translated opening lyrics. They're almost as if being sang by Prushka and to a extend to the upcoming characters since the lyrics kinda fit with their story.
