I think Nanachi is kinder but Ozen is right next to Nanachi. If Ozen wasn't so destroyed by the Abyss I'm sure her spirit would be as kind, if not kinder, than Nanachi. The curses of the Abyss destroy you mentally, spiritually and physically. To get a white whistle someone must willingly die for you specifically. So someone must have loved her and that person is now gone. It says a lot that after being as damaged as she is, she still made her #1 priority in reducing casualties and aiding others into the Abyss. She doesn't do it at the first layer but the 2nd (gatekeeping the 3rd layer), the point where damage starts becoming permanent. The ones who will keep exploring without regard for the injuries they incur. Imagine a war Veteran, with major ptsd, killed many and has lost limbs, whose skin was melted off from radiation but somehow survived but is now more or less a monster, willingly goes back to the battlefield, reliving it all, for no other reason but to guide others into not falling to her fate. She really is kind...
The white whistles are celebrated as heroes but come off as mentally damaged psychos in the story. Honestly, we all should have seen this coming, especially with Ozen. 1. She is over 50 years old and traveled several times to the abyss, enduring the curse of the abyss from the first five layers 2. At some point she ripped her own skin off after losing her senses in the fifth layer. She survived that and then had to go through the curse of the 4th layer right after that and managed to go through that as well. No normal human can survive ripping their skin off and then suffering from severe internal bleeding 3. Her artifact is implanted in her flesh and its like her whole body is wrapped with barbwire 4. She survived all sorts of monsters and parasites and her strength and stamina is beyond human 5. Having a white whistle means that someone very close to her sacrificed themself for her. Meaning that she didn't only go through physical trauma, but multiple emotional traumas as well and at some point became completely numb to suffering as a whole. That woman would go to hell and act like she owns that place
They're like most of our war heroes IRL then. Celebrated as heroic triumphant humans, but deep down we know there's tons of stuff that they've seen that changed their perception of life. Their training probably left some emotional scars in their mind. They've probably seen things in war that made them hope with all their heart that an afterlife exists. Their commanders probably had them commit stuff that shakes their ideologies concerning humanity and morals. And the gunshots, explosions, yelling and eventually silence of death still lingers to their mind after their service. Either the trauma made them better people or the worse of the worse, whatever it is that they've experienced truly changed them. They are IRL white whistles. They've gazed on the abyss and the abyss gazed back.
Dang it, now I'm expecting Lyza to be more damaged as well. Like, in the flashbacks we see her as enthusiastic and active as Riko, but in the end if she truly is alive and they meet her... But considering where this show, and the Manga, is going, that's not impossible path.

The fascination of the mysteries behind Abyss, Orth's greatest culture, hence diving into the deepest layers of hell called 'Abyss' made their weirdness justifiable and kinda cool imo.

They traded away a large portion of their humanity to the Abyss. What that portion was varies, but each and every white whistle is inhuman in their own way.
Someone once told me that Ozen is in fact the most human like and kind of the white whistles. Well, seeing how she literally used Reg as a ragdoll, how she tried to break Riko spirit and how she treated the young one who lives with her... yeah, she is really kind and human. At least she knows how bad the abyss can get and preffers to live on the upper zone.
Bondrewd is the perfect example of how white whistles start escalating quickly from now on. The amount of disgusting, horrifying, inhumane things this show exposes you to give you a good idea of what's happening

Bad End: Riko wakes up, Reg is scattered across the room like an unfinished LEGO set. Ozen taunts the absolutely distraught Riko before stalking off. Maybe not a hard end: Marulk arrives with the Subterranean Bandits, who all subsequently chip in to assist with the wholesome cooperative activity of piecing Reg back together (including an easter egg hunt throughout the Seeker Camp to find the bits that tumbled down the stairs), culminating in chucking Reg into the Resurrection Cube for a few hours.

Lyza might canonically be the kindest white whistle there is, but Ozen is definitely the most mentally prepared, even with all she went through she still tested Riko and especially Reg power to protect her, acting as a villain in order to show them the true reality of the abyss and white whistles, which she and Lysa were exceptions. becoming part of the abyss basically means to surrender their humanity, so Ozen says that Riko isn't human in the first place in order to ease the process.

@@moichispa We actually know plenty about her. She was a drunkard who created confusion whenever she went, even though she was the shortest and doll-like, she went crazy with a few drops of drink. Even so, she would be the first to arrive when help was needed and she drastically changed from her drinking habits after getting pregnant and pairing with Torka, where she became calm and focused on an objective. We also know she "forced" her team to drop the ultra-epic rare artificat Unheard Bell, which was meant to change a country, with a heavy comission on it, in favor of saving Riko inside the Curse warding box. or that's what we know...the letter telling Riko to go to the 7th layer wasn't hers, as confirmed by Ozen. it's all open to debate, even now, in the manga.

That Ozen was able to legitimately wound and draw blood on Reg this much with no weapons or sharp objects, and just blunt physical attacks alone says a lot about her strength. Especially considering all the shit he endures later on.
You're right that it's impressive she hurt Reg (only Sparagmos and the Turbinid dragons have otherwise done that) but I don't doubt that she was using only the merest fraction of her strength against him. If I may get my geek on... so Ozen has 120 thousand-man wedges, literally giving her the strength of a 120,000 men. If we assume the average guy can lift, whether briefly or not, about 150 lbs, I worked out a while back that she would be able to lift somewhere in the region of 9000 tonnes, if we use the US short tonne of 2000 lbs (unless I'm misremembering the numbers involved, but I'm pretty sure the final result was in the region of 9000 tonnes). To put that in context, the Hulk's base strength according to a marvel database is just 70 tonnes, and we know he has to get pretty damn angry to stop someone like the Abomination, who has a flat 200 tonnes. In other words, Ozen is an absolute monster. Also consider that the wedges don't just enhance her strength, they're clearly why she's seemingly impervious, as well as why she has lived so long. If the wedges also presumably enhance her speed to 120,000x that of a normal human... well, it's hard to imagine anything standing against her if she actually gave a f*ck XD
One thing I love about the show is it's realism. It isn't some story where kids go an adventure and beat up adults. Even Riko and Reg themselves get a dose of reality after meeting Ozen.

In the reg vs bondrewd fight, it is said that bondrewd was not even using his combat body. His actually strong body was at the flower garden, where if he were to fight, would have completely obliterated the team. Prime reg, both arms and prushkaa buff still wins, but it is in no way a shitstomp like you describe.
Honestly, going by the Abyss Ozen is comparatively soft and gentle. Realistically speaking none of what she did or threatened came close to the horror or danger to come. Ozen is incredibly gentle here.
Though her intentions and tone of speak both feel heartless, cold, and cruel, it's only out of insane form of kindness she shown that the world is not as kind as her.

I love that I watched this just to relive Ozen's badass moments and then that last clip sent me back to my emotions the first time I watched this show. Damn you Penkin, you musically-gifted God!
At first Ozen cruelty didn't felt justified. Yes, she taught them a lesson but she was little too personal with insults, and reanimating death corpse to proof Riko that she is nothing more than a piece of moving meat felt like she had some sadistic joy in it. Then we meet Bondrewd, who dosent have any of this sadistic tendencies and dosent have single one bad emotion behind his action. Yet somehow he is much more terryfying than Ozen.
She scared the fuck out of me, not gonna lie. I legitimately thought she was the villain of the first series the way she was acting. Holy shit. Can't help it either when they play that ost where it's like the entire fucking world is ending and there's tears and everything. Good gal Ozen though. She toughened them up a bit.
I love how Black Whistles, aka the rank before a white whistle, are depicted as human with the only Black Whistle to interact with the duo being a pretty nice dude. Then we immediately go from 0 to a million with the White Whistles abusing overpowered relics, being superhuman in more than one way, and just being a complete wildcard that could easily murder the main cast if they at least weren't so unmotivated or focused on doing some other thing. Even the newest White Whistle appearing just after the Narehite Village arc is that way for some godforsaken reason.

Bondrewed’s foreshadowing here was meant to give the reader/viewer an idea of how awful he might be compared to Ozen, but he was just straight up evil.
Pretty sure he's completely devoid of humanity, and any morality that came with it. So he's not technically evil. A robot wouldn't be evil for purging humanity to save the planet. The most efficiently known method would be used, and if that happened to cause immense suffering then so be it.
Ozen could easily be called a saint compared to Bondrewd. It's like comparing Poison Ivy to Nightshade if Nightshade also gave you explosive diarrhea while simultaneously making you vomit blood. And if you don't believe me, just ask his lunchbox.
Going by all the comments I've seen, I had this crippling feeling that the secret of the Abyss at the very bottom, is guarded by Lyza herself. All transformed into a monstrosity of annihilation that Riko and Reg must defeat as their last obstacle.
Made In Abyss is one of the only anime in recent memory that warrants a feeling of exploration and adventure. It really feels like you're delving into a uncharted jungle or underwater cave complex.
I think the only reason Ozen did not make her last dive yet is because she wanted to keep her promise to Lyza and sent Riko to Lyza. So maybe now she will make her last dive in the near future.
dont forget she also has her job of maintaining the seeker camp. the three main jobs in the seeker camp is - guarding against lower layer monsters rising up to the surface - catching package balloons, checking the contents and fixing them (like the one Lyza sent) - shelter for cave raiders taking a break. mainly used by moon whistles and black whistles. (there was an omake of Jiruo using the camp)

@Kizui and then? Perhaps she could kill one of his bodies. But the zoaholic basically makes it impossible for him to completely disappear. And after the third or forth time he'd have a good read on what she's up to, so he can then counter her from a distance.
Physically, Ozen is definately stronger than Bondrewd but... Bondrewd has lazer canons and homing lazers too. If she has Reg level indurance(which i doubt she has) she could cover some distance to land a devastating blow onto Bondrewd. One on One first person to kill the other wins(no zoaholic), i would say ozen has the advantage here.
Early game Ozen wins; late game Bondrewd wins. Ozen knows Bondrewd and will go ALL OUT, and to go all out, it will probably be tiring. Bondrewd with the Blessing will probably outpower Ozen. I also forgotten to add somehing here... we never seen ozen fight before, she may be stronger(or weaker) than what i judge her to be.
She has 150 Thousand Men Pins stuck into her flesh. That's the strength of 150,000 human beings. Even if we say it's exaggerated, and it's only like 10 men, she's still as strong as 1,500 people. Her full strength could wouldn't send you flying it'd just put a fist shaped hole in your body.

She finds it curious. In a bonus chapter not adapted in the anime, Jiruo goes to Seeker Camp to talk with Ozen. About Reg she says: "How he spoke and handled his body was similar to how Lyza did." and that before he lost his memories he must have been with Lyza.
Everyone might be hating on her cus of her personality but personally I think she is the most intriguing character of the whole show. I love her as a character
Her relic is over 120,000 man power. It also consumes a lot of energy. You have to eat a lot. Rumor has it that she doesn't use weapons because she enjoys fighting, preferring to engage in bloody, physical combat.
I remember when she was violently kicking Reg's ass I thought "This has to be some kind if test, right? What about Mariuk?" but she was so terrifying I was honestly not convinced.
The thing with Made in Abyss is that everyone is so damn neutral it's hard to determine if anyone is really evil. Ozen, Bondrewd, Wazukyan, Faputa... They did horrible things but the reasoning behind it isn't out of evil but simply tha the reality of the Abyss is just relentless hell.
Damn, every character has a damn perfect design that combines their personalities, it's really cool, and the overall art and detail is perfect too, the only problem is that my heart isn't strong enough to take watching and hearing this shit (beloved terrifying shit)

The curses of the Abyss destroy you mentally, spiritually and physically. To get a white whistle someone must willingly die for you specifically. So someone must have loved her and that person is now gone.
It says a lot that after being as damaged as she is, she still made her #1 priority in reducing casualties and aiding others into the Abyss. She doesn't do it at the first layer but the 2nd (gatekeeping the 3rd layer), the point where damage starts becoming permanent. The ones who will keep exploring without regard for the injuries they incur.
Imagine a war Veteran, with major ptsd, killed many and has lost limbs, whose skin was melted off from radiation but somehow survived but is now more or less a monster, willingly goes back to the battlefield, reliving it all, for no other reason but to guide others into not falling to her fate.

bondrewd is the kindest. he loves all his children. and can prove it.
The white whistles are celebrated as heroes but come off as mentally damaged psychos in the story. Honestly, we all should have seen this coming, especially with Ozen.
1. She is over 50 years old and traveled several times to the abyss, enduring the curse of the abyss from the first five layers
2. At some point she ripped her own skin off after losing her senses in the fifth layer. She survived that and then had to go through the curse of the 4th layer right after that and managed to go through that as well. No normal human can survive ripping their skin off and then suffering from severe internal bleeding
3. Her artifact is implanted in her flesh and its like her whole body is wrapped with barbwire
4. She survived all sorts of monsters and parasites and her strength and stamina is beyond human
5. Having a white whistle means that someone very close to her sacrificed themself for her. Meaning that she didn't only go through physical trauma, but multiple emotional traumas as well and at some point became completely numb to suffering as a whole.
That woman would go to hell and act like she owns that place

They're like most of our war heroes IRL then.
Celebrated as heroic triumphant humans, but deep down we know there's tons of stuff that they've seen that changed their perception of life. Their training probably left some emotional scars in their mind. They've probably seen things in war that made them hope with all their heart that an afterlife exists. Their commanders probably had them commit stuff that shakes their ideologies concerning humanity and morals. And the gunshots, explosions, yelling and eventually silence of death still lingers to their mind after their service.
Either the trauma made them better people or the worse of the worse, whatever it is that they've experienced truly changed them.
They are IRL white whistles. They've gazed on the abyss and the abyss gazed back.
Dang it, now I'm expecting Lyza to be more damaged as well. Like, in the flashbacks we see her as enthusiastic and active as Riko, but in the end if she truly is alive and they meet her...
But considering where this show, and the Manga, is going, that's not impossible path.

Maybe not a hard end: Marulk arrives with the Subterranean Bandits, who all subsequently chip in to assist with the wholesome cooperative activity of piecing Reg back together (including an easter egg hunt throughout the Seeker Camp to find the bits that tumbled down the stairs), culminating in chucking Reg into the Resurrection Cube for a few hours.

To clarify, i suggest there are different types of "love". I guess what lacks in his version is true empathy and care.

But since in his version of love, all will is equal, even the judgment of a little kid. He only values goals and realization of goals. That is love to him.

Lyza might canonically be the kindest white whistle there is, but Ozen is definitely the most mentally prepared, even with all she went through she still tested Riko and especially Reg power to protect her, acting as a villain in order to show them the true reality of the abyss and white whistles, which she and Lysa were exceptions. becoming part of the abyss basically means to surrender their humanity, so Ozen says that Riko isn't human in the first place in order to ease the process.

@@moichispa We actually know plenty about her. She was a drunkard who created confusion whenever she went, even though she was the shortest and doll-like, she went crazy with a few drops of drink. Even so, she would be the first to arrive when help was needed and she drastically changed from her drinking habits after getting pregnant and pairing with Torka, where she became calm and focused on an objective.
We also know she "forced" her team to drop the ultra-epic rare artificat Unheard Bell, which was meant to change a country, with a heavy comission on it, in favor of saving Riko inside the Curse warding box.
or that's what we know...the letter telling Riko to go to the 7th layer wasn't hers, as confirmed by Ozen. it's all open to debate, even now, in the manga.

That Ozen was able to legitimately wound and draw blood on Reg this much with no weapons or sharp objects, and just blunt physical attacks alone says a lot about her strength. Especially considering all the shit he endures later on.
You're right that it's impressive she hurt Reg (only Sparagmos and the Turbinid dragons have otherwise done that) but I don't doubt that she was using only the merest fraction of her strength against him. If I may get my geek on... so Ozen has 120 thousand-man wedges, literally giving her the strength of a 120,000 men. If we assume the average guy can lift, whether briefly or not, about 150 lbs, I worked out a while back that she would be able to lift somewhere in the region of 9000 tonnes, if we use the US short tonne of 2000 lbs (unless I'm misremembering the numbers involved, but I'm pretty sure the final result was in the region of 9000 tonnes).
To put that in context, the Hulk's base strength according to a marvel database is just 70 tonnes, and we know he has to get pretty damn angry to stop someone like the Abomination, who has a flat 200 tonnes. In other words, Ozen is an absolute monster. Also consider that the wedges don't just enhance her strength, they're clearly why she's seemingly impervious, as well as why she has lived so long. If the wedges also presumably enhance her speed to 120,000x that of a normal human... well, it's hard to imagine anything standing against her if she actually gave a f*ck XD
One thing I love about the show is it's realism. It isn't some story where kids go an adventure and beat up adults. Even Riko and Reg themselves get a dose of reality after meeting Ozen.

At first Ozen cruelty didn't felt justified. Yes, she taught them a lesson but she was little too personal with insults, and reanimating death corpse to proof Riko that she is nothing more than a piece of moving meat felt like she had some sadistic joy in it.
Then we meet Bondrewd, who dosent have any of this sadistic tendencies and dosent have single one bad emotion behind his action.
Yet somehow he is much more terryfying than Ozen.

I love how Black Whistles, aka the rank before a white whistle, are depicted as human with the only Black Whistle to interact with the duo being a pretty nice dude. Then we immediately go from 0 to a million with the White Whistles abusing overpowered relics, being superhuman in more than one way, and just being a complete wildcard that could easily murder the main cast if they at least weren't so unmotivated or focused on doing some other thing.
Even the newest White Whistle appearing just after the Narehite Village arc is that way for some godforsaken reason.

This is suddenly a lot weirder now that I'm playing Umineko. Ouzen/Beato's voice actress really knocks it out of the park.
Made In Abyss is one of the only anime in recent memory that warrants a feeling of exploration and adventure.
It really feels like you're delving into a uncharted jungle or underwater cave complex.
I think the only reason Ozen did not make her last dive yet is because she wanted to keep her promise to Lyza and sent Riko to Lyza. So maybe now she will make her last dive in the near future.
dont forget she also has her job of maintaining the seeker camp. the three main jobs in the seeker camp is
- guarding against lower layer monsters rising up to the surface
- catching package balloons, checking the contents and fixing them (like the one Lyza sent)
- shelter for cave raiders taking a break. mainly used by moon whistles and black whistles. (there was an omake of Jiruo using the camp)

@Kizui and then? Perhaps she could kill one of his bodies. But the zoaholic basically makes it impossible for him to completely disappear. And after the third or forth time he'd have a good read on what she's up to, so he can then counter her from a distance.
Physically, Ozen is definately stronger than Bondrewd but... Bondrewd has lazer canons and homing lazers too. If she has Reg level indurance(which i doubt she has) she could cover some distance to land a devastating blow onto Bondrewd. One on One first person to kill the other wins(no zoaholic), i would say ozen has the advantage here.
@Kizui Yes, she probably does have ALOT of endurance, but i dont think she can tank a shot from the sparagmos(aka Bondrewd's incinerator)
Early game Ozen wins; late game Bondrewd wins. Ozen knows Bondrewd and will go ALL OUT, and to go all out, it will probably be tiring. Bondrewd with the Blessing will probably outpower Ozen.
I also forgotten to add somehing here... we never seen ozen fight before, she may be stronger(or weaker) than what i judge her to be.

She finds it curious. In a bonus chapter not adapted in the anime, Jiruo goes to Seeker Camp to talk with Ozen. About Reg she says: "How he spoke and handled his body was similar to how Lyza did." and that before he lost his memories he must have been with Lyza.
Everyone might be hating on her cus of her personality but personally I think she is the most intriguing character of the whole show. I love her as a character

The thing with Made in Abyss is that everyone is so damn neutral it's hard to determine if anyone is really evil. Ozen, Bondrewd, Wazukyan, Faputa... They did horrible things but the reasoning behind it isn't out of evil but simply tha the reality of the Abyss is just relentless hell.
