OK, as a Toyota tech (off the record of course....) do dealerships EVER clean the MAF or only if asked/chargeable. I can totally do it, but wondered if they do it ever in any of the "maintenances"?
Love the FJ.... and glad you found the plug issue... that is CRAZY.

      Totally off the record 😅…
They never clean the MAF sensor.
I actually do this every Time I change the customer’s spark plugs. I do it out of courtesy, I do it because it’s the right thing to do.
These upcoming guys are not only clueless but also only obsessed with one thing.

decades ago when one of my Tacoma tires had a small leak the MPG was definitely noticeable... it would get down to 22 psi... filled it up and the MPG went back to normal... now i have an unexplained MPG difference since extensive work was done in a Chicago Yota nut shop... losing 50 to 60 miles per full tank in the winter and 20 to 30 MPG in the summer from the historical norm on this rig

This might sound like overkill but I change my oil (full synthetic) at 5,000 mile intervals with new filter.
Grease all zerks at 5,000 also.
I add a bottle of Techron Gas Treatment at the same time.
Thoroughly clean MAF and Throttle body (I have used CRC for many years, the best) during oil change.
Change ALL fluids annually (coolant, brakes, front and rear diff's, transfer case, trans, power steering).
Replace spark plugs and PCV every 30,000 miles even though I use iridium plugs.
All of my vehicles go over 250,000 miles with no major issues!!!

@@domcummins4148 I can appreciate that oil change at 3,500 miles and I did the same (3,000) when I used non-synthetic. When I switched to syn I changed my interval to 5,000. I'm in my 70's and frankly I find it hard to follow the 5,000 mile change but so far no issues.

I got a 1999 4runner a few years back and first thing I did was the 30k Maintenence (had 177k on it). All 4 spark plugs were different brands (I have the 2.7l 4cyl). Not only different brands but all gaps were off and not even close to being gapped correctly. One was not even screwed in at all…. And it was still running ok before I changed them… it’s amazing these Toyotas can technically be ragged and never maintained and still keep kicking. I believe it was abused for those 177k miles. But luckily she’s with me now and I take care of all the maintenance correctly now! Of course thanks to all you videos I’m able to do the maintenance. So thank you again. I also have a 21 4 runner that I maintain and just did the power steering fluid from your video on it. It’s got 30k in it. You rock!

Of course, RPM management has been my top fuel saver in the 4R. Best around 55-60 mph with 31.5" tires. Not convinced to go to 33s since I did a two inch lift and only do overlanding for prospecting mostly on good dirt roads and old mining roads. No rock crawling or serious 4 wheeling in rocks. I do tow a 6'x7' box trailer that is a military communications shelter that normally goes in the back of a Hummvee but built on an off road box tube custom trailer frame. When towing that out in the Nevada desert on the freeway with higher winds the 4R does not have enough power to shift to 5th gear so I am considering re-gearing to 4.56.

I had asked probably 30,000 mi ago at NAPA, they didn't have a part number listed for it and they said that probably meant it didn't have one. I should order some plugs too, and I have a serpentine belt ready to go on. I did the air and cabin filter the other day. I always do these things piecemeal, I can never seem to dedicate a whole day or weekend to working on it unfortunately.

Seafoam throttle body cleaner is best I have used for Toyota. Foams when it hits intake air during running injection cleans better than the B-12 I used to clean my belt feds with overseas. My buddy told me for years until I tried it. You will see carbon burning after following the directions and running that smells like carbon and looks like a forest fire. Some throttle bodies are not coated if you spray around the flap it will deteriorate the aluminum. I always used rag over brush to clean around the flap. Pry bar or extension against the gas pedal and seat forward to hold it, turn key on to open throttle body. I always have to work alone and improvise.

My usual mpg (on a whole tank) on my 5th gen 4Runner is 20.5 and I do the math every fill-up. I get my best mileage with all the windows down. I've actually seen 25+ if I really make a game out of it and milk it. My best ever was 29 mpg (on the trip I regularly track) but I'm pretty sure I must have had a tail wind. That's what's both good and bad about the boxy shape of the 4Runner; it can both hurt or drastically help mpg depending on the wind direction. I'd be very interested to hear if you noticed any difference when you put on off-road tires. As my numbers reflect the OEM road tires I got when purchased.

    Additive ?! Use seafoam
Make sure you use regular recommended spark plugs. Don’t try any split. Plugs ot whatever just saying kind of plugs that came with the vehicle. The manual will tell you of course don’t forget your air filter and your cabin air filter always replace at the same time and use premium gas. It doesn’t cost that much more because you get a little better, gas, mileage, and additives in the fuel and you probably won’t have use a fuel additive if you do

I have a question not related to this video. I have a 2012 4Runner and I am trying to replace the rear wiper Arm. I removed the nut with a ratcheting wrench 10mm then spray PB Blaster to penetrate the stud since there is some corrosion. I even used a pick to scrape the corrosion at the base of the stud at the top of the arm and have used PB Blaster several times. The Arm is still not coming off and it is to tight to get a puller in there. Any suggestions, for instance should the spoiler come off and if so How?
    Thanks, Joe

Use 2 pry bars, one on each side (with a rag underneath protection your vehicle) under it and work it slowly back and forward .

So we took off the spoiler ( it actually wasn't to difficult; also 10mm wrench 4 bolts 4 plastic pins, plastic cover over the wiper motor and unplug, started with the cover) and used a wiper puller. It came off with a popping sound. Looking at the stud it clearly had corrosion throughout the stud so I don't think the blaster would of penetrated throughout., just my thoughts. Anyway the new arm went on after we cleaned off the corrosion and works great. Thanks

Those milage numbers (before plug change) are pretty much identical to my 98 Tacoma limited. Almost 300 miles per full tank, almost able to break 20mpg. I was able to get like 20.2 mpg's over a full tank once several years ago. 371,000 miles, 265/75/16 BFG K2's just barely bigger than stock, no lift very slight rub.

My '97 Tacoma is an SR5, which preceded the change to Limited in your '98 (if i am not mistaken) ... we should have the same tank capacity? i can fit just around 18 gallons in mine if it is completely near empty. similar miles, my rig has 355k... i have 15" Michelin defenders though is the difference. ?? How are you getting 20 mpg at 300 miles? smaller fuel tank? for my rig that 300 miles on a full tank is barely over 17mpg, which started happening for the very first time this past winter after Extensive Shop Work done to the truck... i HAD consistently gotten 350 to 360 miles PER full tank during the winter on a consistent and very long time frame and now it is in the tanker!

      @@efil4kizum
I think my Tacoma tank is like 16 gallons, not sure. The limited package on the 1st gen Tacoma (or at least my 98) was 4x4, xtra cab, matching fender flares, maybe cloth interior, some other odd n ends. 4x4 and xtra cab were the important ones for me. Mine also has the TRD package which was the electric rear locker (important part) plus other stuff. I've only broke 20+mpg's over a full tank once since I've owned it (bought it used with over 300k). I could drive further on my tanks, could break the 300 mile per tank every time if I wanted but wouldn't change the mpg's, just run it dryer is all. I usually fuel up just over the empty mark at around 275-300 miles per tank. I usually don't turn the low fuel light on but I have on occasion. So yeah, rarely go over the 300 miles per tank (although I could if I pushed it past the empty mark further) and never these days go over the 20 mpg's. Say 19 mpg's × 15 gallons is right there at 285 miles per tank, it might be 17 gallons I'm not sure about that but I don't ever remember putting more than 16.

Did you notice any difference in your gas mileage on your 4runner when you put the TRD Fox shock's on? Another question i have for you since you saved me from making a mistake when I was going to install the newer fox shocks on my off raod but i had installed a Wescott design 2 inch lift on them and figured out it was actually 3in my question is what upper control arms would you recommend and is that the only thing that need's to be replaced or does it need the drop kit installed on the driveline to keep the geometry within safe specs? After this I'm going to have questions for you on my 2003 4.7 v8 4runners suspension, it has the xrea shock system and when serviceing it last time i noticed they are starting to show wetness on 2 of them so i know it's way too expensive to go back with that shock system so I'm going to remove the xrea system and shocks and find a good replacement. I hope you don't mind me asking your opinion on the best options are because i truly value your opinions and do not trust any of the dealerships around here because i have had the ticket writer's and technicians lie to my face about the simplest thing's so I'm definitely not trusting them on something important. Keep the awesome content coming, I can't get enough.

You can totally replace the X-REAS SUSPENSION with the regular 4Runner suspension, I’ve done it before.
Gas mileage did drop a little after installing the fox racing shocks.
First I don’t recommend lifting your truck 3inches unless is done properly, being that I don’t usually do that, I’m not the proper person to advise you on this.

@VikingsGarage My intention was for a 2in lift, but I didn't realize that the fox shocks would do the inch they do. I'm just going to take the lift part's off the shock's and just go with shock's and be happy with the lift I get with oem part's. What would you recommend doing with the wiring that goes to the pumps on each side of the frame on the xreas system?
