- l have been looking for one of these for a while, this one needed some love but the price was too good, so now it needs some repairs. come hang out in the garage and help me fix her up.
One thing I like about Mustie is he doesn't pretend he's an amazing mechanical genius. He's pretty realistic about what happened and what didn't. Also, he hardly ever uses special tools, he just makes do with substitutes.

After growing up and living in Maine for over 40 years I moved to Oklahoma 4 years ago for work. Last summer I started a restoration work on a '79 Datsun 280ZX that had lived its entire life here. I started by redoing all the suspension bushings, new tie rod ends, ball joints, struts, etc. It was amazing to me to work on something that nuts just came off like new. All the undercarriage is still painted with no rust. So much nicer to work on that 40 year old vehicle than any vehicle back in Maine that was more than 5 years old.
Fresh transmission fluid should solve the lockup clutch shudder, provided the friction material isn't completely worn out. I always use OEM fluid because I know it has the correct additives in it. Some will argue that their favorite aftermarket brand is 'better', but it's not like Toyota (or any other manufacturer) makes trans fluid. They set the specs for the friction modifiers and other additives they require, while outside suppliers actually produce it starting with common base hydraulic fluid.
Aftermarket brands use a 'one combination works for all' approach to the additive package. So the safest choice of trans fluid for your vehicle is the stuff it came with. If the old fluid is really worn out (dark color, possibly burnt smelling), it can take a couple thousand miles of driving for the new fluid to fully smooth-out the tranny's operation.

I think he means plain jane as in vehicle options. Similar to the land cruiser, the US only gets the base model. Manual seats, basic radio, not big on luxuries. Its a practical offroader and plain when it comes to factory options

Mustie, Great find! I have two 07's they are fantastic very reliable vehicles. I purchased mine used they both had the minor trans shudder this condition is NOT a condition that will cause the trans to fail. The torque converter clutches become glazed this is due to the breakdown of factory added friction modifiers in the trans fluid. I fixed both if mine myself. EASY fix. I just pulled the pans replaced the fluid on them and the screen filters. I replaced the fluid in the pan x3 use only Toyota brand WS fluid. No need to do the operating temp fluid level procedure. Simply measure and replace the same amount drained from the trans pan. Both my FJ Cruisers have had ZERO shudders. Hope this helps. Enjoy the best off road reliable machine on the planet👍👍😊

Valvoline maxlife synth ATF is better than the Toyota ws crap. Also, much easier to remove the return line from the front bumper area to flush the trans.
And if you're not doing the temp check method you can't be sure if its actually filled fully or not.
The RAV4 does that too, my transmission shudders as well. Other than that, the car has been bulletproof reliable. I have no complaints now I'm thinking I might do the same with my RAV4 but first I'm going to do some research.

Years ago when I lived it Iowa I heard of a trick to get the salt off the bottom of the car was to put a lawn sprinkler under the car that was strong enough to throw water along distance ...turn it on full blast and drive back and forth over it to wash the bottom of the car..

The front window is a rock collector.... you'll get used to replacing it. Also, prior to replacing the windshield, go buy all the cowl clips that are needed for the little panels. The cowl panels have to come off to replace the window, and I'll guarantee the glass place won't have them. If you don't replace, you can lose the panels going down the road.... (experience talking). Also, make sure they don't bend the window trim along the top of the windshield (experience talking again..... take pictures before you turn the truck over to them).
I think the dealer is the only place to get the rear wiper. :/
All Sales makes a pretty nice billet locking fuel door for the FJ's. Pretty easy to install if you want a locking door (All Sales 6071KL Billet Fuel Door).
A-TRAC is the magic button.... it only works under a certain speed. I think it's 20MPH.
If you're looking for a leveling kit, Rough Country make a nice 3" kit.... it's not 'really' 3 inches.... 2" in the front and 1" in the rear (that sounds dirty...) It levels the truck pretty well, but I did lose about 1mpg after I did it.....PN: 76030.
Be careful on the trans fluid change.... there are some tricks.
The cabin filter is really easy to change, pop the arm on the glove box and it's right there.
There's a LOT of optional wiring hiding behind the dash.... want the front fog lights? Add lights and the switch. Want driving lights on the roof, BAM.... same thing (well you have to drill a hole, but still) I added both the optional front lights and a NOS air dam with lights for the roof rack (neither were options for the '14, but they still fit). Wiring was all there... but I lost 2mpg with the air dam. Go figure...?? (airflow's a bitch?)
Oh ya... go check for recalls on your VIN, they recently did a recall for fuel pumps.

The wife and I got a used (2008) Lexus RX 350 and will probably drive Toyota cars from now on. We absolutely LOVE this car.
Check to be sure the oil lines are updated to metal, you don't want to know what happens if the original ones rupture

The way that custom piece of hand cut pipe fit was incredibly satisfying.
I live in the UK so suffer from the salt on roads, My father always sprayed the underside of his cars with SAE30 tractor oil mixed with parafin/Kerosin.
Our cars all lasted for years with out the dreaded tin worm.
People in the American Midwest used to use roofing tar. Hard to apply but cheap. This was before spray-on undercoating.

Watching mustie Working on northern vehicles really makes me appreciate not having to deal with salted roads down in the south..it's been awhile since I watched your vids I remember when you where picking up junk weed whippers on the side of the road and bringing back to life .I was hooked ..now you have a full blown big time operation but still the same mustie wit n charm 👌👍👏

30:03 Ground strap is for static electricity, plastic loves accumulate static electicity and big spark can make a BIG problem if your fuel tank is leaking.
This is the answer... Triboelectic effect can also create static electricity to the point of spark generation. Making these parts metal would eliminate the need for the strap but add a great deal of weight to the tank.
Every time I watch these kind of videos I'm glad I live in Southern California, my 2006 Tundra is basically rust free just some minor surface rust. This looks like the cars I used to work on in the UK.

Had one of those at one of the bases I was at in the Air Force. All tools we made had to get signed off by QA to use on planes, so our backyard tool was an official asset.

I know it’s a 1 in a Million shot, and there is nothing you can do, but when I was a kid running Goodyear may-pops on a 55 Chevy, I was filling a tire once and it popped in my face, wasn’t hurt at all...but to this day the sound of air filling a tire makes my belly button pucker.
Filling anything with air still makes me nervous. Working with pressure vessels at all makes me uneasy. Had too many close calls.
Same here filling up a bike tire inside the car and went to 80+ with a Chinese tube and completely destroyed that innertube. Was deaf white powder everywhere... wow

@@nestrac Absolutely true. I'm an American, moved from Indiana to Sydney in 1996. Used to have to replace cars every 4-5 years in Indiana because the road salt would eat them. I now drive a 1987 Toyta Hilux, a cousin to the 4-Runner Mustie was talking about. It has zero rust and has never been repainted. If you live near the coast, cars often get a bit of rust around the rain gutter line, but if you live more than 20km inland, you pretty much only ever have to buy 1 car. Just keep changing oil, brakes & tires.

I think thats a great buy! At that mileage, all four wheel bearings will go one by one at least that's what always happens to cars I own. I just replaced all four struts on my car at 116,000. Mechanic says they were fine but car rode terrible. In any case for $5k you could fix everything, and still feel good.
I purchased the same model in '06 with 7 miles on it. 14 years later it has 175k+ miles. After maintenance service it purrs like a cat. Visibility sucks that can be easily fixed with mini mirrors added for the blind spots. Went through 3 windshields, because of flying little pebbles. Gas sucks...and still love it. Why? I was involved in 3 accidents (none of my fault) and the last one was a head on collision...and all 3x's my wife and I walked away.
wow fuel is dirt cheap where you are, i'm in the UK and your paying approximately 0.47p per litre converted for your fuel. We pay about £1.20 per litre. That tank of fuel would of cost you approx $86 at UK prices!! Great video by the way always love watching you 'tinker' with things in your garage. Especially love the ones where you take junk motorcycles and fix them up and get them running. Great stuff keep them coming.
Static electricity in fueling, ESPECIALLY with plastics, is a SERIOUS concern. I could go in to detail, but trust me - static is a huge problem in the fuel industry.

@Erotikstudio Winkler GmbH Brass hammers are usually on every truck because they don't spark. The biggest cause of gas station fires is static electrical discharge at the nozzle. You can look that up. People that get back in a car while fueling in dry conditions are just asking for trouble.

Man. Can't tell you how much I appreciate this video. As well as your obvious competence in repairing a vehicle, and creative solutions. I'm in the exact same boat as you guys. Got a fantastic deal on the exact same vehicle. Though I'm no mechanic, TH-cam videos like this, and a little ambitious tenacity has me getting dirty, being challenged, and learning. It's scary at times, but so very rewarding. I love my FJ. Will now tackle the gas tank issue, and shudder issue, myself as well. Thanks to this video that is.

Loved it!! I drive a 2011, Army green FJ, with 71K miles. I had to do significant rust remediation underneath since I bought it from Pennsylvania. Not as bad as yours though since I bought mine with 44K. It would never have been "Toyota Certified Used " like mine was, if it had been on a lot here in Florida. We just aren't used to that road salt damage. I really liked seeing the slight differences underneath and your bare-bones switch panel :) Both of my heat shields need cupped washers to keep them quiet since the steel nuts corroded right through the aluminum. I hope you make more vids on the FJ!!!
Used certified means nothing more than the dealer took it in trade or purchased it at auction. Certified is strictly a marketing ploy! Dealers hardly ever repair used cars unless it's an obvious problem like a loud noise, lights not working or a safety issue like no brakes
I just recently got my second 07 FJ I Love them I regretted trading off the first one in 15. I ended up getting another one same color but more features This one has for 177 miles in it but rides and performans line other one at 6300 miles. Your video is valuable information and what to do when those problems arises. I know your wife will enjoy her fj cruiser.
Hi Mustie. I had a motorcycle that needed some care on the front brake hydraulics. No matter how I tried, I couldn’t get decent pressure on the handlebar lever after bleeding them. I was given a tip by someone - apply the brake & tywrap the lever back to the handlebar. Leave overnight & cut the tywrap off the next day. When I applied the brake it had amazing pressure. I used this method on a car’s brakes keeping the pedal applied overnight with a piece of old broom shaft between the drivers seat and the pedal. Please forgive me if I am teaching my grandma to suck eggs but it may help one of your viewers who is having difficulties. Thanks for your excellent videos.

The ground wire is to keep a static charge from building up between the tank and the outer cover.
I tore down an FJ for parts at a chop shop and wow, That thing was build heavy duty, I was impressed. Good luck with her, I think you did real good on the purchase.

i have a 2007 silver as well....i bought a new OEM Torque Converter from Toyota and friend installed it!!! never another problem....tried everything before that... fluid change and every youtube fix....... put 240g miles on it --- couple sets brake pads and a wheel bearing on right side...Take silver grill out and plastic dip it flat black changes the look as well. Enjoy your fj.....i have a 1974 FJ 40 as well....;)Great buy!!!!

Check the striker alignment on the driver's door, it sounds like it's hitting the latch body before the striker hits the latch pawl.
aircrash tupolov The door wasn’t aligned properly to begin with, you have to get the lines right before you adjust the striker plate, which are usually adjustable as the holes in body metal around the bolts are quite large and when sandwiched between the 2 heavy plates of the striker, remain solidly in place. Once loosened the plate can be adjusted anywhere within the circle. Hope that helps😁
Whenever a customer has to get a door adjusted on a new car by the dealer you don't want to let the customer go around the body shop and watch. That body shop's going to do the same thing that he did. The door hinges may be built to where you can move and adjust them nowadays but they didn't used to be in the 80s and 90s and most of the 2,000's

We are on our 11th Toyota in about 30 years. Not one of them failed. I owned one these, 2008 model. Had if for it's life and finally used it as trade in to get my twelfth Toyota, a 2019 TRD Pro 4 Runner. I feel like all I did was upgrade the FJ.
Two functions on that ground strap. Some plastics against wind will produce static electricity (remember when plastic body panels first came out? zap!) They've changed the composition since - panels are more conductive now, so regular ground straps in the vehicle work. The second function of that strap is so that if it were to come off, it won't go flying (you will just crumple it under your vehicle). Same goes for that strap on your spare tire. It's a Federal Motor Vehicle law (used to be in the biz). Always love your videos!

I wanted one too...hard to find and big $$ now. So I got a 4runner. same engine, same transmission.
Man, that could be my truck, right down to the missing paint on the steering wheel trim and the squeaky fuel door. Mine's an 07, silver with 171k. Replaced my gas tank straps last year, alternator year before that. Welcome to the club, for 5k you absolutely stole this, even with the issues....
It looks just like mine, which I bought new on 4/1/2006, eight days after they came out as an 07 model. The salesman said there was a a six week waiting list, and that he could have sold the demonstrator ten times over, had it been an automatic. I told him I would not have an automatic, and drove it off the lot that day. The six speed model is AWD with a low range shifter for off road use. The first 50,000 purchasers got a scale model in the same color as their vehicle (mine was around #3,000 with silver the most popular color). It is still going strong at almost 148,000 miles.
Charles Young that’s an amazing story! I’m just curious (not asking a price), but did you have to pay over sticker? I remember Fourwheeler magazine was all over these and showing some cool mods, lifts, and such.
Same as mine. I bought it new March 2007. I have just over 260k miles on it. Besides regular maintenance stuff, I replaced exhaust system, fuel door, about six windshields. She is a bit tired, but it's still my daily driver.
In regards to the fuel tank cover - Some plastics have carbon in them to make them slightly conductive. (in the megaohms) This is enough to discharge static charges as long as there is a path to ground (chassis in this case)
I did up a 1978 Land Cruiser before the internet. It was good and after my stroke, my wife has done all the driveing ever since. I am 82 now and she in the upper 70's. We are in Illinois now have a Mitsubishi suv and it is great, no rust, not a Detroit vehicle ! Our vehicle has a screen that shows what you are doing !
Tip! When Nut gets stuck in socket. just turn it back on stud a few threads and a light tap on each side and the socket usually comes off and unscrew nut by hand. No getting up and using a screwdriver needed.

I thought the same thing when I had one on my lift during my Toyota Cert. Training, like whats the point but according to my instructor at the time" Plastic picks up static while driving sometimes in some parts of the world. So they ground it so no shock and less chance to go boom" I guess it was an issue at some point.

I wish you would do a transmission change I've got a 2005 SR5 4Runner does not have a transmission stick and I'm totally lost I'm wanting to try to change my fluid and filter so please please hurry up do a transmission filter and fluid change on your Toyota you're the only smartest man on TH-cam that I trust when it comes to fixing vehicles you are too smart keep up the good work

Ive been enjoying your videos for the past few weeks. Very informative. I'm also a NH resident and you arent lying about the salt. Ive got a 2010 f150 that I bought new, kept it clean always, has 55,000 miles on it and it's going to need cab corners and fenders. Salt sucks!

You can get keys for those locks quite easily! The indirect bitting code is printed on the face.
Also the cylinders are easily removable in their unlocked position with a blank key.
You really don't need that blank key for unmount the cylinders - just the key that matches the lock, then You can sneak the lock out ;o)

Enjoy the FJ! I got mine in 2014 (got a 2012 with all the upgrades, not a trail teams, but, have the sub, ac outlet, a-track, locking diff, parking sensor, backup camera, etc.). That is cool to know the a-track just needs a switch if it wasn't included when purchased! I have just around 80k on mine (bought it with around 30k). Not a single issue. Hope it keeps going to 300k! I don't put many miles on it (maybe average 5k a year on this vehicle). So, it is going to take some time to get to 300k! My 08 Honda Civic is around 150k and running like new, hoping 300k from that as well! Enjoy your vehicles and treat them well!
It will! Have a friend that was a restaurant food salesman. He put 300k highway miles on his 2007 FJ before it needed a new engine. So he replaced the engine and his teenage son is still driving it!

The Toyota Tundra's have been known to eclipse one million miles, with regular maintenance and a couple timing chain changes (they stretch over time, and get replaced around 300,000 miles). I know they have different engines, transmissions, etc, but it gives me piece of mind knowing I've got a Toyota. I don't ever plan on letting my FJ go, as I love it and they keep rising in value (I've never owned a car that's worth more money three years and 20,000 miles later, than when I purchased it).
@@corkystclair7475 Yeah mine has been worth a few thousand more than when I ought it 7 years ago! It has always kept it's value, but, last couple years have been tempting. But no, I'm keeping it.
Honestly, you really dodged a bullet with the rust underneath. It may look bad compared to other vehicles, but compared to other FJ's and Tacoma's of that Era, it actually looks pretty good. Toyota recalled some of the Tacoma's for the frame rust issue, but for some crazy reason, they never recalled the FJ's. There are some class action lawsuits that have been filed, so there's still hope for us disappointed FJ owners

Wow, I have a 63 Galaxie in my field that has less rust under it. Gotta love living down South, I watch South Main Auto channel also and he's a mechanic from New York and I cannot believe how much the cars rust after 4 or 5 years. A normal 10 year old car on the road here (Arkansas) just has dust under it.

The funny sight on the waterfront in Portsmouth is the big pile of road salt that eats our cars and right next to it is a pile of shredded scrap metal which is what's left of our cars! It was the most enjoyable one hour video I've watched! I felt like I was right there in the garage. I used to love working on vehicles when I was younger, so it was great to be part of your adventure into the unknown issues. I laughed and appreciated the parts where you speed up the camera. You didn't make it drag out. My daughter is looking for an FJ and I'm doing all the research because I love Info car videos. I've owned a 2000 4Runner, 2008 4Runner, and now in my older years a 2019 Lexus GX460. Love Toyota!
I'm from MS so we don't have the problem with the rust under neath. I have a 2002 Super duty Ford and it is like brand new under. I have learned much from you channel in the last few weeks. Thanks for explaining everything so well.

that is the best deal i've seen in a long while. fun fact, last summer i replaced the exhaust downpipe gasket on my 72 FJ40 with the F gasoline engine. SAME PART as the flange gasket you replaced with tubing (turned out i didn't even need to but i had the manifold off anyway). Toyota has been doing it right for a long time.
I am sure somebody already mentioned it, but that ground strap on that plastic shield is to discharge static. bought my 2010 FJ for $15,000 with 25,000 miles on it. one owner, no accidents. the previous owner had also bought, but never installed, a lift kit, snorkel, bunch of other toys. he included all those in the box.
the 2010 had the bigger engine, and Toyota had fixed a bunch of issues in the second gen 2010+ years like the tendency of the inside front fender to tear.
the great thing is, even the 2007 with that many miles, the motor is good for at least double if not triple the number of miles.

I'm just glad I live in Washington where they don't salt the roads. If it snows at all were screwed, but my truck will last much longer without rust.
As a fellow FJ owner I'll give you some advice. That low gas light, get used to it you'll see that a lot. Lol

As an owner of 2 2007 fj's (husband and wifes) both awd manuals one at 135,000 and the other at 155,000 I can say they are great trucks. I've never had any major and no real minor issues. Mine has never even been back to the dealer. But a few things to look out for; fuel sending unit can be accurate all of the time and then all the sudden you run out at a quarter tank. I have replaced both of ours. If you power wash the underside be careful of the evap canister as you can actually spray water into the vacuum pump and cause it to malfunction or rust up an seiz. Flat windshield love to collect rock chips hahaha. The beep beep of the parking sensor is not normal. One long beep letting you know it's on and then silence unless you are getting close to an object and then increasing beeps until solid which means you are less than a foot away. Some scan tools can increase or decrease the volume as well and also how long your lights are on after the vehicle is turned off. But I'm pretty sure that all have the feature that if you leave any light on in the vehicle it will turn them off to conserve battery. Good solid trucks. Enjoy yours.

Here In Canada🇨🇦 we suffer from the rust problem too looks like 💭 you made a great purchase a few new parts some grunting A few broken studs LOL a wire brush to clean up the rust fluid film to slow down the rust it’ll make a good daily driver I never buy new vehicles either I can’t stomach how fast they depreciate a friend of mine had the transmission shuddering on an old corolla he changed the fluid and filter he says it solved the problem look into this rust inhibitor made by CRC they use it on boats 🚣♂️ somebody sent me a link the other day I don’t know if it’s any good the misses can see how much love ❤️ you put into her truck

Curious about the weld. The heat from the exhaust doesn't affect the welds?

Rust is depressing, 13 years later it's called a Patina fad over here and the stuff they can't see is called Bonus Rust.
That's nothing...I have a car 3 years newer with twice the amount of rust, despite the fact that I've been Fluid Filming it the last several years. Up here in the northeast if you don't start undercoating it from Day 1 and get it in EVERY nook and cranny the car will rot out

I think the ground strap is for static, not so much for the gas tank to prevent a fire, but to dissipate static for RFI, if the pan was not grounded or bound to the body it would gather static and the radio reception onboard and other cars near you would hear very little. Also, static could affect other systems onboard

If you set your mirrors properly, you don't need the mirror "eyeballs".
Close your window, put your head against it, and adjust the side mirror so you can just barely see the back corner of your car. For the right side, line your head up with the rear-view mirror, and do the same thing. You'll think they're wrong, but try this:
As a car approaches from the rear, you'll see them in the rear-view. Just as they leave the rear-view, they'll also start to appear in the side mirror.
You'll start to see them in your periferal just as they leave the side mirror.
NO BLIND SPOT.
Almost everyone sets their mirrors pointing WAY TOO CLOSE to their own car. That is NOT the blind spot!
I agree this works well, but it takes a long time to get comfortable with it because you don't have your own vehicle there for a relative frame of reference.
Might need a new graphite ring on that section that's close to where you cut the pipe, the part with the springs to allow some play. Usually when they start squeaking like that it just means that the graphite is almost eaten away assuming toyota uses a similar setup to what I've seen
My Fj is a 2008 with 102,000 miles. You won’t regret this purchase. This is my favorite vehicle by far that I have owned. When the gas light comes on you have about 45 miles to empty. You might have a few more gallons in the tank.
What a blast these things are to drive . Found one with a 3 inch lift and 31s . Wife stole it .
