    +7 mpg on the diesel is a HUGE understatement. The 535i will get about 450-550 km/tank and 800-1000 km/tank with the Diesel engine.

    You fail to mention another key benefit to diesels which is range.
    To many folks it won't make a difference, but it's nice to know you can drive from here in Tampa to Hilton Head, SC without the need to stop.
    What if your wife is driving alone in the wee hours? Not having to stop door to door can be a huge beneifit practically, but also for peace of mind.

      Diesels are starting to get phased out for many car buyers and diesel bans are already being imposed in major cities in Europe since it is the main reason for bad air quality, pollution and acidification. NOx is slightly worse than CO2 for the environment and is way more carcinogenic. Narrow-minded people like yourself who only care about filling up as seldom as possible need to get educated to see how diesel affects our society in general, particularly the environment and thus see how the disadvantages of diesels far outweigh the economic aspects.

    • @blade8922
      @blade8922 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Petrol isn't some kind of special fuel that doesn't pollute and studies have shown it to pollute more from certain types engine. There also isn't a credible alternative to diesel that currently exists. Petrol has terrible efficiency and range like wise batteries and hydrogen aren't currently good enough.

    • @aidan1585
      @aidan1585 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnSRR-lw4bxthat’s all false. they’re making a comeback now as Mercedes have gone full speed ahead with their diesel hybrids plug-in which are FAR cleaner for the environment and our lungs than a petrol or petrol hybrid. Diesels from about 2017/2018 onwards are cleaner than petrols (proven fact; GreenNCAP and ADAC have tested it). A regular 2.0 diesel Mercedes C-Class (C220d, 2019) was tested and gave a result of *ZERO* mg/km of NOx polluted on a real world test cycle (on-road testing).
      You really shouldn’t come out with bogus statements without backing them up. Petrols are dirty.

    So you get our european 530d as a 535d.... strange. Here we have a 530d with 258hp and 535d with 313...

    • @Seb-de
      @Seb-de 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +MrArt69 If I am right they only have the 535d (no 530d). The lower power is maybe due to the emission and /or to the lower cetane index for they diesel fuel. I think it is 45 or 48 minimum in the states where as it is 55 in Europe. Of course premium diesel fuel are better, up to 60. I am not 100% sure that the cetane index explain the power difference.

    I've had some track time with both the 535d and the 535i. Yes, the 535i does handle better, but you will only notice that at the limits which I doubt the vast majority of the cars buyers will ever reach so the fuel savings and the extra torque from the diesel makes it worth it.

    wow you guys in the US get less power than us in the UK/Europe, we get 303hp (I have 330hp) and yes I does indeed pull like a ba#+Ard, I hated oil burners until I test drove a 530d and was amazed, it's a peach of an engine, and so I got a 535d m sport, it's like riding a wave of torque, doesn't matter what speed you are doing you push that pedal and it leaps forward, get it de-ristricted and it will push on to crazy speeds, nice car great engine, suspension gone soft on the latest model though.

    The 535d is almost definitely a better cost proposition than the 535i. Not only will you earn some (if not all) of the difference back in fuel savings, but the 535d will hold its $1500 premium over the 535i on resale, if not even increase that premium since diesels tend to hold their value better than gasoliners.

    Americans ahahhahah, in Europe 50% of cars sold are diesels and most of the executive salons are diesels, a diesel has a much smoother ride then a petrol at the motorway as to get to the power in a petrol you have to rev it hard and bleed your ears, but with a diesel you get power from 1900rpm to 2500rpm, also the torque is good for effortless overtaking. Most people go for the 520d, 184hp which is enough in any reasonable situation yet returns around 50mpg (60+ according to BMW). And no one buys a new BMW and sells it after 3 years, people do that with boring, cheap, standard cars like Hondas and Toyotas.

    • @QiuyuanChenRyan916
      @QiuyuanChenRyan916 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Larry Bartlett Well, over the highway it is not too much of a difference unless you got plenty mountains to climb. Usually they don't test it with real situation, say you went on a long distance trip alone in a EPA test that doesn't add up. we need a partner at least to switch driver or someone to talk to.

    • @Wolvesq
      @Wolvesq 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Larry Bartlett Reports from real world owners say it is closer to 11 -- low to mid 30's in the diesel, low 20's on the gas 535. The epa notoriously overstates petrol mpg and understates diesel, so that's no surprise.

    • @FjordTrotter

      Because US diesel emission regulations are more stringent than European regulations. The 265-hp 335d can meet US regulations with the urea tank, but the 286-hp Euro-spec 335d cannot. So the 535d has to be detuned to comply.

      retrolabor. de Might have been true earlier, but not now. Atleast not according to the official bmw site. 530d and 535 both have twin turbo, and m550d have 3 turbos.

    a $1,500 premium over the gas engine ? would anyone think about this ? have you ever bought a new car ? that is the smallest discount you can get on a luxury car like this.

    Diesels aren't really made for the US. Here in europe Diesel is alot cheaper and more popular.

    • @BFD15i
      @BFD15i 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +christian Chichester Well, at least you have Xenon as standard.. And backup camera? Really? Those things are ridiculous.. You just don't need them, unless you can't drive.

    • @Cchichester
      @Cchichester 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      BFD15i back ups camera are nice and I don't care if you don't need them its just the fact that a luxury car doesn't include it at the price is stupid

    • @BFD15i
      @BFD15i 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      christian Chichester
      You call it stupid, I call it wise. Everyone who wants one, can order one. Those few bucks don't hurt. But everyone who doesn't want one, doesn't have to pay for one.
      Or do you really think, that BMW (or Mercedes or Audi) would install stuff like that and won't change the pricetag?

    • @Cchichester
      @Cchichester 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      BFD15i its just embarrassing that they don't include it, all hondas come with a backup camera

    • @BFD15i

      christian Chichester
      That's personal preferences, I guess. For me, I really don't care.
      On the other hand, the european model has even less standard-options than the US-model. Maybe that's why I'm used to pay extra for every little gizmo..
