Soon, the CaterPuppy will turn into a beautiful ButterDog.
Bill should've had his own spin-off movie about his portal adventures
I liked them both, there kind of like "Evil Dead 2" and "Army of Darkness" in tone. They should have made a spinoff with Bill the electrician/adventurer, that would have been great.
Wouldn't it be some shit if the caterpuppy was confirmed to be a luck dragon larva?
That ending. I love heartwarming horror. "This is, um, my brother, and this is our--uh, MY wife. Yes. She is from Mexico. And this is our dog--he's a mutt and he's sensitive so don't tease him about his fat rolls. And this is our hunting falcon. We perform at the saloon each Wednesday night. Sometimes there's a matinee before the old-timey can-can dancers on Saturdays.
House 2, to me, is like a gateway horror for kids. Any bad rep it gets strikes me as coming from horror fans that just wanted a comedy horror, which I understand, given this is more a comedy fantasy. Personally I recommend it mostly as kids movie, for early teens.
This and Army of Darkness are the best ways to do that~ Thoguh Army of Darkness has a fair few sexual tones (though I'm not one of the folks who say sex is evil violence is ok for kids).
So probably this one, and then AoD~
Though I saw both when I was around 7-12 with no issues (didn't even realize the sexual tones)
Movie Nights is quickly becoming one of my favorite TH-cam channels.
+Christina Lacey Yeah, it's honest, non-aggressive, natural, non-influenced, charming, goes against all "constantly slapping effects, notes and links in your face" conventions and has the best intro theme ever.
Me too, I didn't know she had a TH-cam channel after she left CA.
And as much as I love Phelous' shtick, it's always a treat when Phelan visits Movie Nights and we get to see him being more Phelan.
I totally agree!
Guess it doesn't take much to amuse you.
I remember watching this as a kid and loved it then. Still do now.
I used to watch this movie with my mom when i was a kid. House 2 was and will alwats be one of our favorites.
Love the opening music. Sets a great nostalgic tone for the episodes.
One of my favorite movies of all time.
Made for the same budget you two! They just made the dollar go further because of all the special effects people the director was friendly with like Chris Walas (the Fly, etc). The writer/director was the chief puppeteer on Gremlins and called on some favors. House II was a childhood fav. I even referenced it in Caesar & Otto's Summer Camp Massacre (our premiere comedy-horror)
Wow, this reminds me of a combination of "dinner and a movie" and "monstervision" from the late 90s. Keep it up.
OMG I'm so glad somebody else remembers Dinner and a Movie (thanks to AVGN more people know about Monstervision tho :'3)
Sp Scorcher I remember Dinner and a Movie! I watched it when I was a kid, the hosts in that were great.
It's the 3 quick punches during the intro that do it for me. Love the review!
I LOVED this movie since I was 5. It was scary, funny, endearing, and completely unpredictable.
Also note- this may be the first movie to show dinosaurs with feathers!
I
+Daniel Alexander that seems plausible in the context of this universe.
Always a fun thought~ and also possible.
Though probably not due to the paradoxial nature of the skull in that case.
I feel so ashamed on how long it took me to get the pun.
lost track of obscurus lupa when TGWTG changed it's website format, so glad to finally catch up on all her work since then.
I loved this little move. Saw it in the theater when it came out with my High School girlfriend. Ah, the old days.
I got the impression that Gramps wasn't a zombie - he was alive but just *really* old, kept alive by the skull but still aging, but that the partner was dead and really was a ghoul, bound to the earth by his craving for the skull.
House II looks like a fun watch and would be something a bit more entertaining than some current movies. We need more movies with zombie cowboy grandpa or even Old Man.
+CWDTrixie and Electrician/Adventurers.
So true there.
I just love the smooth jazz beginning to this. it fells like an old Saturday matinee .
This really seems like my kind of movie
Dinosaurs, Cowboys, AND Aztecs?
SING
ME
IN!
+Hromovlad1 don't forget catterpuppies.
I've been trying to figure out what this movie is for YEARS. Like since middle school since I've only seen parts of it on the SciFi channel and never knew what it was till you guys did the first House movie review.
Thank you so much for reviewing it! Now I know what the movie that's been's so hard to figure out is and I can go watch it.
It's just occurred to me what an awesome and probably rare surprise this must have been for you guys. Like, you'll have seen a _staggering_ number of movies between you in your time so to have this drop out of practically out of nowhere and, after the glowing review you both gave the first one, for Phelan to say this was by far his favourite, it must have been an absolute treat.
...and, no, I don't know why this is only occurring to me on my God-alone-knows-how-many-th rewatch either.
I like both House movies, but I still like the first one better. Just because of its incidental humor and how its played straight at first. People didn't like House 2 because it went far more in the direction of comedy than horror. People expected a horror film with comedy, like the first one, but got more of a comedy film with a little horror. Both work, and both had really good sets, props, and creature effects though. In my opinion, both these movies need more love.
Congratulations, you came up as #1 on the IMDB.com page for house 2.
Also House II is my absolute favorite of the series.
Great job on the review!
House 2 was the first "Horror" movie I ever rented as a kid even though it really isn't that scary, I found it to be lots of fun back then, and today I still get a kick out of it, its very imaginative and has three likeable leads, overall an underrated Fantasy Comedy
I'm going to have to drag out the Anchor Bay double feature of the House films and watch them again. I haven't watched them in 6 years.
Arrow Video put out a great box set of the first two films here in the US on Blu-ray, with a nice book too. I'd highly recommend it!!
holy smokes, that movie looks great +_+
I have a suggestion - how about Weird Science? The motorcycle scene features the biker from Mad Max! It's one of my favorite bad movies. It's terrific!
I absolutely loved both House movies as a kid. I have to find that DVD set.
On one hand, I like the villain in the first one more. On the other, this has Catterpuppy and Amy Yasbeck in her undies, so that may win out
House 1 & 2 are my favorite movies from the 80s. I didn't know there was a third and fourth. Will be watching those next.
I rented this film out on VHS, shortly after I saw the first House film (yeah, I'm that old) At the time, I was going through just about every werewolf, vampire and zombie film on the shelves of my local video store.
"okay..." I thought "this _isn't_ a horror film. It's more like a fantasy adventure"
Once one makes that adjustment, you'll enjoy the film more.
It's funny, but these smaller scale fantasy movies is something they did well in the 80's. I was also a big fantasy geek back then- reading Tolkien, Dragonlance, playing D&D etc, but I could never find something in movie form to scratch my Tolkien itch. By which I mean, a quest in a pseudo-medieval world, a band of diverse characters, epic battle at the end.
Whenever I hired a video out that I thought would deliver, it always turned out to be a group of gooners, LARPing around an unconvincing set, with sometimes a smattering of soft-core porn.
Yes, you had stuff like _Willow_ (which was basically Lucas trying to do with _The Hobbit_ what he did with _Flash Gordon_ ) and _Krull_ but, for me these were missing just that certain je ne sais quoi.
I loved this movie as a kid during the 90's. I used to watch it quite a bit on VHS.
Points to House 2 for the feathered dinosaur. Not sure if it was intentional or just to make it cute, but hey it's more accurate than anything in Jurassic World!
to be fair the Jurassic Park movies have never been accurate. Dilophosaurus were much larger and didn't have fills and spit venom (as far as we know) and Dinosaur DNA wouldn't be able to survive more than 521 years, much less 65 million. and raptors weren't nearly that large etc...
kind of going on a bit of a tangent here. Movies can be as accurate or inaccurate as they want. that's why they're movies.
@@FireBlastStudios To be even more fair, the first Jurassic Park movie wasn't spot on, but it definitely helped update the public consciousness of dinosaurs to more closely match the science of the time. Of course, the further they moved from the source material the less science was involved...
Minus points because pterodactyls weren't dinosaurs and as far as we know, didn't have feathers. Also, it looks like a dodo bird with pterodactyl wings.
@@mastermarkus5307 Some points back because pterosaurs are believed to have had a layer of downy hair to keep them warm as they soared at great heights.
I love this movie. I even made an NPC character sheet for Bill Towner, Electrician & Adventurer. Used him in some of the ttRPG games I've run.
I absolutely loved this film the first time I saw it as a kid. It was what my dad used to call ‘bottom shelf’ video store fare. The films that came out that week, but no one could figure out if they were flops at the theatre, or had been direct to video. So you just rolled the dice and hoped for a diamond in the rough.
I loved this one as a kid. Also, I really love stop motion. I wish we had more.
I just gotta say... I love your new look in the intro. Gorgeous.
Please review Waxwork 2 sometime (unless you already have and I am just an idiot for not realizing it). It's a wonderful film.
So glad you both liked this movie. I love it! Such a fun, clever mash of genres!
This sounds amazing.
Lol,there's the painted skull again💀🎨 Which is fabulous😻
Your intros are pure cheese and I LOVE it :) I'm having so much fun watching the channel, been binge watching.
Thanks!
You guys ever consider watching the Maniac Cop movies or Moontrap?
3:35- Just like the first film, this one has some connections to the Friday the 13th franchise.
4:00- Reminds me of that scene in Men in Black where Kay gets the Series-4 Deatomiser, and Jay gets the Noise Cricket.
I agree that John Ratzenberger's character is hilarious.
Kane Hodder being in this?
6:04 they even show him.
I loved these two movies yup.
I always wanted the electrician adventurerer to show up at the end and go "huh? How'd you guys get here?" then they have a scene switch where they tell him the story as they ride away. and the last line is "Yakno. I think I can help. I've done this before."
Love this channel
Thanks for the recommendation. It was such a fun movie.
"The Second Story"... I thought it's a rather stupid subtitle, but when I realized it's a pun, it got even worse. :P
Its utterly perfect though aint it?
I think you mean it's brilliant.
To be fair, that pun does give you a real good idea of what the tone is like
House 1 & 2 are the On Going adventures of Cliff and Norm in The Paranormal Universe anthology, with a little bit of the Suit and awesome Action Sequences
Bill Maher's acting career xD
+John Witkus Also, the Aztec woman would definitely have died of diseases.
Looks like a surpisingly entertaining movie. :)
I love how you painted the skull.
One of my favorites from childhood. When I fist saw it I went back and watched House, then thought for sure there must be two separate franchises called House and searched for the “other House” with the Crystal Skull. Didn’t figure it out until a manager at my first video store job explained it to me.
Thanks for doing the house sequels.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE! Seriously your right about Aztec lady in the old west people would think that Jessi has a Mexican wife expecially if there in frontier California.
Fun fact: At the beginning of the 'ancient' Aztec empire, Oxford University was already 300 years old!
I used to watch this movie a lot when they first started showing on tv. Good times.
Gramps death got me sobbing, I still think about it and get choked up. 😭💔
Grandpa is the movie's BEST character!
That intro couldn't be more mid to late more 80's. Very impressive.
House and House 2 were great.
I had no idea people didn't like House 2.
And both have a lot of Friday The 13th connections. Many people who worked on the first F13 also worked on House. And both Lar Park Lincoln and Kane Hodder worked on House 2. Harry Manfredini scored both Houses.
Yeah, both of these are classic screwball horror comedies.
Even though I never even heard of this movies series, that movie sounds like it'd be right up my alley, especially with Allison and Phelous comparing it to TCM Part 2, which I love and find infinitely better than the original. I love movies that can be wacky but without being downright farcical and know when to dial it down and have more genuine character moments so you actually care about what they're going through and from their review, it seems to be exactly that.
My favorite bit is when he indignantly points at the bird in the cupboard and exclaims "A prehistoric bird!! ):
OMG I bought the same double house pack shown in the video.
I remember catching this on the Sci-Fi channel on a Saturday afternoon back in the mid 90's. Ya know, when the Sci-Fi channel still gave two fucks about its dignity. Anyway. I was still just a kid at that point, and when I heard that this movie was coming on, I thought to myself "Alright. Sci-Fi's gonna play a scary ass movie. I am gonna prove myself as a man once and for all by sitting down and watching this whole movie through! No more being a pussy and watching Droopy Dog reruns for the billionth time!"
So I watched it, expecting to see a bloodbath. But instead, I was treated to this really cool fantasy adventure. Part of me was disappointed by this, but when it was over, I found myself really liking the movie overall. Maybe it's time I revisited House II after all these years.
This movie reminded me of "The Frighteners" too in the undead effects.
I actually loved this movie because of how unique and entertaining it was.
I want to see that as a Tv series, this group of people having adventures in the old west.
Fell asleep during this one but maybe I'll give it another try one of these days.
Oh wow! I remember this!
I love this movie, I enjoyed every second!
Adorable puppets
I loved this movie, I saw it when I was a kid and even then the sheer "bonkers" part of the cross time/zombie cowboy/dinosaur/caterpug, so funny.
This movie sounds amazing. I must see it.
House is a horror comedy. House 2 is an adventure comedy. Both decent flicks!
Now I remember why the movie coco felt familiar when the old man is dying
The zombie cowboy in this film reminds me of the one from The Frighteners.
Great review Allison and Phelan! I like a good supernatural/fantasy/comedy/horror/adventure film! Haven't seen this one before. Probaby gonna give it a watch. It does look like a better 'Crystal Skull' movie then Indiana Jones 4.
Royal Dano is awesome.
6:04 Thats Kane Hodder 😮
I always thought it bombed because people went to a House movie expecting...well House and what they got was a rip off of My Science Project from 2 years earlier. Seriously just replace the skull with an alien orb and its pretty much the same beats. Traveling to different time periods, wacky buddy, token girl, if you watch them back to back you find they have the same feel while the original House had more of an Evil Dead 2 vibe with more emphasis on horror comedy.
they needed both skulls to be young and immortal... and evil from all of time tryed to get the skull so they left tears in space an time in the house.. . neat yes?
for a long time I did not know there was a first film
Looks like House 2 is more scientifically accurate than Jurassic park by showing dinosaurs with feathers.
Good Idea: A decent horror western. The only 1 I remember is called Ghostown . That could use a remkae or boot
House 2 was very My Science Project.
House II is such a fun film!
I want a movie about that electrician
Ham from Toy Story is in it.
does anyone else do their own dance during the intro cuz I do one everytime
Fun fact! My great uncle played one of the Aztec priest. He's a white guy from Massachusetts.
Haha that IS a fun fact!
if you liked this, i would suggest my science project. Same sort of vibe, same time period
I wish phelan stuck with this haircut. It's classic Phelous.
No grandpa noo looks like a fun movie
Jessie is Gramps.
Some decade or so into their life in the old west, they travel south through Mexico and Central America to find the remains of her temple and stumble upon the crystal skull.
Hey the protagonist of this was the protagonist of Big Eden
...interesting...
The world is a poorer place for not having a Bill stand-alone film.
