Hah. I was at lowes, the "cheapy" kobalt toolbox to hold that screw driver is $700. So tools aren't any cheaper than pc gaming.

I build my friends PC and pick the part for them , I feel so lucky because it's something I love doing and they feel lucky for having someone building it for free. That's what I call a Happy Medium
Antoine R.Tessier you should still charge them (ofc on cheap rate), its not about being greedy, but imagine every other friends (i prefer to say acquaintances) that you dont really want to give free favor/service asking you to do it for free and guilt-shame you because you did it for your other close friend. But if you just said "they paid for it" and ask them to not say you give them cheaper price, you will be free from these troublesome request.

A tech at microcenter built my first computer with me when I was 11 years old lol they let me in the backroom even though thats not how it was supposed to be done. The guy taught me everything about building a pc and thats why I still know how today.
My friends were VARs who'd teach me how to assemble computers. I'd read the latest PC magazines to learn about the current and future trends, to learn how the mindset of the PC community worked (naming conventions for software and hardware for example), we'd just hang out in each other's homes or offices to chat, assemble computers for each other or their customers and I'd be observing what they did while asking questions.
Then when I started working for registration & product demos at trade-shows I'd make myself free passes to the show floor to talk about tech with the reps and vendors.

@Brandon - Too funny! I built my first computer, and I do mean first as that was about the only way to get a computer at the time. My friend bought an Intel 286mhz laptop through the mail, but I decided to build my own, and get the 386 chip. I bought a 40mb hard drive the size of a brick, 1mb of ram, MS Dos, the case & power supply, a 14" monitor, and a cheap modem, all for the low sum of 3 grand! lol I then upgraded the monitor to a top of the line Viewsonic 17" color crt for $800, and a top of the line US-Robotics modem, also for $800! Times they do change.

This video was too long. Halfway through it, I got hungry so I left it playing and went to the kitchen to fix my self a sandwich. But then I found out that I'm out of mayonnaise so I went to a store.

But we kept in touch and we became friends and I got over my crush on her. Then she broke up with her boyfriend, we drank some alcohol because of it, I told her she'll be fine and I wished her well. I still think she's the most beautiful woman in the world, but like I said, I am over my crush on her. It was like five years already when I first saw her.
Besides, I am quiet happy with the friendship I developed with her. It was more important than a crush. So we kept hanging out, drinking, having coffee, and all. I had a girlfriend, she started dating other guys. My girlfriend wants to live some other life without me in it, so I said, okay, I want the best for you and I want you to pursue your happiness.
My lady friend and I drank alcohol about it, and she gave me the same advice I gave her when she was in that position and I became okay with the breakup immediately. But we were really drunk, so she spent the night in my apartment. I only have one bed, so you know what that means: She took the bed and I slept on the couch.
But on the couch, I really can't sleep. Something was bothering me. So I tossed and turned for about three hours, then I finally can't take it anymore, I stood up and went straight to my room where she's sleeping.
I approached the bed, gently sat on it and I reached for her shoulder to pull her closer to me. She stirred and woke up. She asked what's up. I told her, you know, the first time I saw you, I was watching a video and left it playing to get my self a sandwich then went to the store to get some mayo then I got distracted by life that I forgot to finish the video.
She said, you know what, I've been wondering about a weird noise in your night drawer. So we opened that drawer, and lo and behold, there's my phone and this video still has two minutes of play time on it.

That’s the thing working with hardware. When you start everything is made of eggshells. A few years and you’re juggling GPUs...
If you break something you have to rma it is replace something, if he breaks something he walks over and picks up another one. Not that he doesn’t care but honestly hardware isn’t THAT delicate we just treat it that way because of cost. I’ve built on carpet for years never used any anti static, just flat yolo’d it, and never had a hardware failure (aside from a hard drive) until I built my first pc with new components. Then I didn’t take any risks, even though I knew breaking it was unlikely I couldn’t afford to take any risk

@@TylerjWebb I've experienced the same thing. Every computer I've built, I built on carpet with no anti-static band, and have never had issues. One of the most nerve-racking things I've done was taking apart my phone to replace the screen. I was sweating and shaking, and now I just pull it apart, logicboard out and all, in like five minutes, just flailing everything about like it's nothing. Hardware isn't as delicate as you'd think, (unless it's cheap)

Yeah Linus has a great channel, anything you would ever need to ask he can answer. There’s no way you can do a budget build like this now, however you can literally stream games from supercomputers, NVIDIA does this, it’s about $100 a year and you will probably want a really fast internet service. I would recommend that until prices fall again

Still not bad but almost double the price of when this video was made. Amazing what 1 year can do in prices on PC building. Doesn’t help graphic cards are crazy expensive right now.

Prices have gone wayyyy up lately.. i built my pc about a week after this video released.. I payed $499 for a gigabyte rtx 2070 super windforce oc.. same card is going for over 700$ now.. also went with ryzen 5 3600 at 170$ at time of purchase.. 3600 now over 250$

Used to work for a shipping company (shipped stuff like TV's, amazon orders, etc), can confirm that people handle packages pretty much the way Linus described. Just throwing and booting shit around, assuming that the inner packing is invincible or just not giving a fuck.
On one hand, fuck those guys. Some men just want to watch the world burn. On the other hand it's hard to blame them too much because their compensation is so shitty, especially at that company. Just one of the many downsides of running a company with a "bottom line" mentality, assuming you can treat people like shit and not have it come back to bite you.

It's been about 20 years since I built My own PC. Used to be one of my favorite things to do. Thank you again Linus for a fantastic video. This one in particular has inspired me to pick up that hobby again. I may in fact use one or more parts from this as the basis for my return to PC building.

Stubby Fox fortnite at ‘epic’ settings will get 90-110 FPS. Minecraft is like 240 fps at highest, and that’s all I know cause I’ve only had it for a week and that’s all I’ve played

I'd argue their most important use is Isolating inrush current from the line in your wall to your computer. That way when it's plugged in and your Air Conditioner turns off, your computer doesn't get warm and make pop noises.

Yeah PC components are insane right now. Was just barely able to get a Phantom Gaming 4 x570 for like $150, then they went out of stock again the next day and people were reselling for like $250-ish immediately. Pretty much the same deal with the RX5700 XT, snagged it on Newegg for like $390, then they went out of stock, now it looks like they're back again. Thankfully all I have left is the PSU and SSD to finish my build, and those seem to be in decent supply right now.
@@martyshrekster Yes, low supply with computer hardware components when some are somewhat close to MSRP or hopefully are so. And yes there are many sellers who overprice the components. Over 40% and above the MSRP. It's insane indeed.

yeah.....I came up w/ a x570 build for basically that same price w/2600 for basically $600-700(I'm not sure how my reused rx550 and ssd/hdd's I'm reusing factor in...but yeah). Stinks that it's ending up this way and I hope everything goes back to normal soon...

Thank you very much, Linus Tech Tips your guides and knowledge has helped me build 3 custom PC's from a basic Win7 Ultimate legacy PC with an Intel Desktop motherboard to a more current 8.9 on the Windows Experience Index build which happens to be a B450 tomahawk Max board with brand new components. Honestly watching Linus touch anything electronic is kinda cringe. There is very little if any care what so ever when handling anything. There is a very severe disconnect comparing Linus to other tech youtubers, almost as if he really doesnt know exactly what he is doing, or doesnt care enough to be careful. Never the less his channel is entertaining and informative.
He obviously doesn't acknowledge mistakes, he just makes errors which are part of an ongoing educational process. tbh, knowing how to fix errors is a fabulous skill to learn.
@@Frostsage This is a pretty budget build with individual parts all under $200 so from a company standpoint, a broken component doesnt really hurt that much, also, these parts are waaaay more durable than you think. I think everyone just naturally treats their new pc parts like a 1mm thin pane of glass because we bought them and only have 1, whereas, linus has built easily over 50 pcs. He also doesnt really care lmao

I actually got a build for 500 without graphics card ..Ryzen 5 5600G a RGB case 16GB ram a nice mobo and you can actually reuse your PSU and use the stock cooling for the cPu

Well at least he's learnt not to put a screwdriver anywhere near anything that's plugged in. But it is slightly worrying that he didn't care much that the sata drive mounting screws were spinning in Thier now bored out holes. I can't tell you how many PCs I've seen destroyed by loose screws inside the case. ...it can be a fire risk.
