David, how did you find the dual screens in the BMW with regards to reflection/glare? I like the Genesis because the gauge cluster has (traditional) cowling around it, whereas the BMW's has zero cowling. Thanks very much for another great video!
Never had an engineer’s perspective. Good to see that. What was the first review did with those gap measurements? Also you should try out the 2025 GV80 too. Waiting for that review.
...And the only problem I have with German cars is they have the best driving dynamics, are built like tanks and usually have slightly thicker gauge metal panels/thicker paint and more sound deadening material, superb sound systems..and drive flawlessly when new! Buuuuut, unless you're more than a 6 figure earner and do not care what the maintenance and parts cost, and money is not an issue... those cars will break the bank after 4 - 6 yrs of ownership. Still great cars though!
New ones aren’t built like a tank. Not a single BMW could last in the shithole i reside in. Nor a single American or korean car for that matter either. The japanese are leagues and bounds more durable than others, it’s not even worth making any comparisons.
@@zhila5958 False, simply false. they are far less durable on torture roads... they use CHEAP materials that are cheap to replace.... if that id your definition of durable, so be it. The Japanese don't build tanks.
David, thank you for another great detailed and road driving review. Going with the Genesis for the incredible interior and smooth ride. After my personal experience with BMW, I would choose the reliability of the Genesis.
I'm a fan of BMW but many friends have had many EXPENSIVE repairs with BMW after the warranty expires, despite keeping up with maintenance at the dealership. I don't need the size of the GV80 so test drove a Genesis GV70 (base model) and was blown away. I'll likely be trading up my Mazda CX-5 for my first Genny. I might wait for year 2 of GV70 Hybrid, which should be reaching the shores within the next couple of years...
Thank you, David San. Can I request you measure the paint on the front bumper as thats usually where most stone chips occur. Also could you possibly get a sound meter to measure the interior decibels?
David, will you comment on the thinking behind a function such as adjusting the HVAC controls within the monitor what was the engineering that designed this feature?
Just concise, informative and real excellent comments in terms of reliability and easiness to understand. About to decide which SUV to buy after return my company car due to my recent retirement. Genesis GV 80 Coupe( with 48w electric motor; mild hybrid ) facelift model 3.5 Twin Turbo vs. BMW X5 Hybrid( which has been my favorite SUV all the time). Not a big fan of this trend where manufacturers put basic functionality like temperature control in the infotainment panel instead of having physical controls in the console.
I have a BMW X5 and I love it. I do like the look of the GV80 but worry about losing my sporty aggressive characteristics of the Bimmer. Plus, I’ve been in BMW and Mercedes products so long, is a Hyundai right for me? IDK? More for my money, but I’m hearing bad things. Decisions decisions…
Hi David, No doubt in my mind the genesis GV 80… like I have said before many many times, German cars are not reliable and dependable in my opinion… The GV is much more capable as a better fit and finish on the inside and outside and has an overall better ride… In my opinion❤
Genesis drives me bananas. They make gorgeous cars then expect mb and bmw owners to go buy their cars from hyundai sales reps in a new polo and service their cars with hyundai service. I think it might be the most horrendous dealership experience(s) i’ve ever had.
You forgot one thing about the BMW is that when you are driving you can voice command it to lower or increase temperature, you don’t need to fumble with the screen
I traded my 2020 rx for a 22 x5 and i have no regrets such an improvement overall, better ride, better tech, top notch quality and overall better pride of ownership. My first BMW and probably not my last
I could not get past the ugly and staid sterling wheel on the GV 80 - it’s awful- so I went with the X5 40i which delivered in December. Genesis finally fixed that on the 2025. Both good looking inside and out, I just slightly preferred the BMW, which also has the better engine. Also, Genesis and its dealers are not proven as a luxury brand, so I’d expect to see some sort of financial break from buying one, but there isn’t one. This is such a competitive segment with a lot of great choices. Love the X5 so far.
The BMW color is not bad, but that Genesis semi-gloss paint is gorgeous. The Genesis does look like a $200k vehicle (yes, because it was designed by former Bentley designers) and is one of the best looking vehicles on the road imo. Definitely need those 22" rims to fill out the wheel wells. Great review
Agree, having the HVAC buried in a screen is an immediate dealbreaker for me in ANY vehicle. Genesis just "gets it" when it comes to ergonomic design and ease of use. Very intuitive.
Good, quality perspective on these vehicles. I love the BMW motor and driving feel however question reliability and maintenance; especially since I usually purchase pre owned. That is my only hesitation with purchasing a bmw. The Genesis in my opinion is a bit more luxurious and I have less anxiety purchasing than the X5.
I will say Genisis is still fairly new and they have Damn near caught up and surpassed the Germans in a Short period of time, camera based turn signals, digital rear view camera, reclining second row seats, heated and ventilation so the overall package is better and less expensive then the BMW those are the facts.
As a German I always thought that the German cars are over engineered but they have a much better ride quality than any Japanese car. However the Asian cars have a higher quality in terms of longevity. As an example. The 3.0 l 6 cylinder in the Audi Q7 has 3 turbochargers. 2 normal and 1 electric, which uses 48 volts and can spin from 0 to 170000 rpm in 0.2 sec. They get a 3 mpg better gas milage than Toyota. Guess what brakes first. Toyota puts in a 4.0 l six or eight cylinder that is normally aspirated and uses regular gasoline. It has less horsepower and the gas mileage is worse but the engine lasts forever.
I can afford it and am not willing to drive a more boring car. Not yet anyway. I have said I will consider going back to something like Lexus when I am in my 80’s. At that point a PHEV or even full electric would make sense since I will generally only be driving to the grocery store and doctor’s office. Meanwhile, BMW, Audi and Porsche are what I crave. I got a great deal on a ‘25 X5 40i Silver anniversary edition with 900 miles on it, by virtue of the fact I did not get it from a BMW dealer. I saved around $15-$20k in terms of cost and trade in value (vs buying from a BMW dealer) and still retained all but three months of the warranty. That savings will pay for some maintenance! I traded in my ‘23 SQ5, which was a marvelous car, but I wanted something with more room. Next one will likely either be another X5 (especially if they dump the run-flats which I understand is going to happen) or a certified Cayenne. Possibly a Q8 which is a nice looking car, but the BMW is a lot cheaper. The X5 50e is enticing.
Drove them both. BMW is the king of this market. You can measure all you want, but it outruns, out handles, and outclasses everything else in this class, esp a freaking Hyundai which only puts lipstick on a pig. The B58 engine is a legend. BMW is, and always has been, built for drivers. Genesis is built for riders.

In Peoria, AZ and was beyond pleased with the sales experience and the vehicle.
I live in Calgary, Canada, and recently, they opened a new building for Genesis. Everything separated from Hyundai, very classy and luxury.
Walking into a cheesy Hyundai dealership to check out a Genesis was borderline humiliating. I’m glad they are opening more standalone’s.

mechanical quality, materials and fit and finish for the suspension, frame, brakes, everything... is clearly superior on the BMW.
the matte paint looks nicer
Paint comparison is not apples to apples!
How about the Audi Q8? Compared to the X5 and GV80
On a 4 year lease: BMW
Long-term purchase >5 years ownership: Genesis
Always preferred the nob to touchscreen.
So you're saying the Genesis drives really well over perfectly smooth roads😂
For me, as a consumer, the GV80 looks and drive better. The X5 is good though
in this price range... the Genesis is awesome
rotary gear selector is a mistake
BMW X5 is not all new for 2024. Current gen came out in 2018 for 2019 model year.
The 2025 GV80 will use a large screen similar to what’s in the X5.
The X5 can be controlled through voice control in addition or instead of the touch pad.
Have a 2022 GV80 2.5 and I wouldn’t trade it for the BMW.You can’t beat the Genesis 100k mile warranty
Why not get the 3.5? Was it price difference that made you go 2.5?
100k warranty is worthless, the worse cars made will go 100k... not a buying point
With same price range i would go for BMW interior and exterior
Seriously why they have these big screens which look ridiculous and make things more complicated
One thing to hate on the BMW (and other makes) is EVERYTHING is on the damn screens; makes for a collision waiting to happen
BMW, all day long. No contest.
No savings either
Anyone who is impressed with GV80 should visit their service department. Hyundai service is the worst.
BMW is not made in Germany. It’s made in the USA and it will fall apart after the warranty period.
You mean during the warranty? the X7 were notorious for falling part during the warranty according to some folks
