Boots Riley And The ‘White Voice’ In “Sorry to Bother You”

  • If you’re not white, odds are that you’ve used a ‘white voice’ on the phone.
    It’s pretty useful. The ‘white voice’ can convince the person on the other end to treat you like an actual white person - which means that previously difficult-to-obtain things like bank loans, good customer service, and even prompt responses from 911 are at your fingertips. With a white voice, the world is your oyster.
    The white voice is also the main premise behind rapper Boots Riley’s debut film, Sorry to Bother You, in which a telemarketer played by Lakeith Stanfield discovers that he’s got a very convincing white voice.
    Dexter Thomas gave Boots and Lakeith a ring to hear more about the joys of telemarketing.

    I figure most folks complaining about the “white voice” didn’t even see the film... Based off the film “white voice” is metaphor for hyper confident worry-free, non threatening apart of the majority person... spoiler spoiler spoiler it’s why in the film it’s used as a way of selling something...

    + a bunch of scifi & magical realism in parts of the film going somewhere else entirely. IDK

    For the people saying it's a double standard, this happens in real lif. Black people who use slang or come from the Caribbean have two voices; their Caribbean/Regular dialect and their American (typically Caucasian dialect) voice (when they are speaking to bankers or get a job .) Because in America or whenever you move somewhere new, you have to assimilate. White people in America don't have to assimilate so they speak what they established. Plus I believe this movie is showing how life drastically changed for him when he used his "white voice", demonstrating the bias people have. This is a comedy that's satire (meaning it takes real life problems and joke about it. It's not that serious)

    • @RandDesu
      @RandDesu ปีที่แล้ว

      Late to the party on commenting here, but! White people put on the "white voice" for jobs/work, too. That care-free formal tone isn't what most of us talk like when we're at home or chilling with friends. That's probably a big reason why Lakeith mentioned in this video "one can be white and put on the white voice." If I started responding to people at work with informal talk like "Not much bro, just chilling, how bout you?" My boss would probably look at me weird. That's why as a white person, I take absolutely zero offense to the movie, and find the idea hilarious, everyone can relate to it.
      I worked at a call center once, and they kept giving me "warnings" that I need to sell more, and would say that obviously I was doing something wrong. After several weeks of this the manager called me into his office. He had me sit down and said something along the lines of "Hey.. so I've been listening in on your calls, and... you are absolutely doing everything by the book, so I can't fault you there. But maybe we can try working on your tone of voice, and maybe be a little more aggressive and not let them really have much room to respond." Which was both funny and annoying at the same time. There 100% is a certain tone that works for getting sales, but I was never really any good at hitting the exact tone that could achieve it.

They create a correlation "the bigger my afro is, the blacker I am". Essentially, they're trying too hard.

      +Matt S Huh, didn't know that. But my point still stands.
      +TOASTYCO. AV West Virginia hick accent is not what they are talking about when they say "white voice". Pay attention, they even give you an example at 0:55.

    "White voice" is not a thing. You have one voice that you talk to strangers with and one voice that you use for family and friends. This is quite common for all, it's called "social etiquette".

    White can be substituted for "understandable" in this scenario.

      From what I can gather, a point of the movie is to make fun of this. Vice talking to the actors about what it means to them is by no means racist.

      Targeting one group of people as OK to hate and ridicule IS racist. You might as well make whites wear stars on their sleeves.
