How To Get A Full-Ride Scholarship For Playing Videogames (HBO)

  • Harrisburg University doesn’t have a football team, and they likely won’t ever have one. Instead, they’re putting their money into videogames.
    After a lengthy recruitment process and months of tryouts, Harrisburg just awarded 16 full-ride scholarships for incoming students who excel in Hearthstone, League of Legends, and Overwatch.
    Esports popularity hasn’t quite translated into college sports thus far, and isn’t regulated yet by the NCAA. So Harrisburg figures that if they invest early, they can get a jump on everyone else.
    In order to be the Ohio State of esports, they’ve sunk a lot of money into the program, and attracted a lot of prospects who might not otherwise go to college.
    VICE News visited the university on the final day of tryouts to see what it takes to get a full ride at what just might be the future mecca of college esports.

    Harrisburg University isn't the only place giving out scholarships for esports.

      Within seconds you hear "Let's fucking DO THIS"
      and yet if I recall correctly, professional League players have gotten fines for that. Lucky that isn't the case for students on scholarships.

Out of the 6,000 active players (90 + mins per month), I was always rated in the top ten, and for one particular week, number one in the world. I wore grooves in the arrow keys of my keyboard I played it so much. Now, at 40 years old, the flame is gone.

    • @Yukosan13
      @Yukosan13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eugene S there are female football leagues.. it's just no gives them attention

    • @eugenes9751
      @eugenes9751 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Yukosan, of course, and there are female videogame leagues as well. The NFL doesn't even have a rule saying it can only be men. My point is that they make it a big deal that there are no women getting the scholarships as if it's because of sexism.

    • @Yukosan13
      @Yukosan13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eugene S and how is it not sexism? When league, overwatch and many other video games often limit their advertising to only a male audience... if more girls knew about games like league wouldn't they play and get good? Just remember how many different people played pokemon go when it first came out... 😆

    • @0bservationist
      @0bservationist 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yukosan13 it’s not sexism because they selected only the BEST players. And video games can advertise to whichever demographic they choose. Do you have proof they are only advertising to men?

    • @eugenes9751
      @eugenes9751 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Yukosan, it's not sexism. Women are allowed to be in the NFL, there just aren't any women who can compete at that level. If you're under the impression that girls play less football than boys because society doesn't let them know about the leagues, than you're out of your mind. Pokemon go can not be compared to the NFL, men are always going to outcompete women at any sports that requires physical abilities because we're a sexually dimorphic species and in our species, the males are the hunters and protectors, so evolutionary pressure will dictate that they'll be the ones with better physical abilities (on average). The reason there are no women in this videogame league is because they're not playing Pokemon Go, they're playing competitive games that men are much better at than women. If this was a scholarship for Pokemon Go, or Candy Crush, sure, there would be significantly more women that get it.

      so what about normal sports? such as soccer and football? their hobby / semi- job is those sports, and such like the gaming world for these dudes. they need to maintain a normal grade to stay into it, so i don’t understand what you’re getting at.

    You have a responsibility to balance the team with men and women. Giving a woman an equal chance to get a scholarship and play is just common sense. An all male team will seal your fate as a failure. You'll go down in history spending a lot of money on something that won't be accepted.

    Although this is interesting, it doesn't seem like what drove players to go after esports as a career, not just so that universities can create another brand of sports team to profit off of, thinly veiled as an education.
    Also, I think they should have more women on the team simply by accepting them more on their potential and capability over the four year period, and not expecting them to be at the 'top' right at the start. They're just turning off a lot of female applicants by not accepting any past the trial phase.
