  • This is a "Canadian Soldier Reacts" video. The purpose of this video is to get the reaction from a Canadian Soldiers point of view so that I can compare and contrast it to the Training and experiences that I had while in the 1st BN of the Royal Canadian Regiment from 1987 - 1998. I do a lot of talking in these because my intent is to "React" to the material and not to "Steal" someone else's content. If you are not interested in my reactions, please watch the original video.

Once had the pleasure of meeting the Gurkhas while in combined cadet force. Such a warm, kind , generous humble group of guys though when they demonstrated a section attack to us of f#ck was I glad theyre serving the British Army

At 9:48 it's the L129A1 Sharpshooter rifle, with an x6 ACOG and a reflex sight on top.

Firing the gpmg from the hip is a thing in the British army mainly for close quarters which makes sense as the OC mentioned they came from Brunei and jungle warfare is mainly close quarters. Most likely saw use in Afghan and Iraq. Hip firing is even mentioned in the British army gpmg training manual. So not just Hollywood but also British doctrine

These little guys well know how to use that blade ... they were giving us a display, just enjoy, no need to over analyse it. Also, the attachment going on the helmet at a guess, is what we called an esco light in the paras, it will illuminate their position if they go overboard so they can be recovered quickly, just a guess

The Rifles do a ton of FIBUA/DIBUA as did the former regiment before i.e the Royal Green Jackets

I once knew a gurkha who showed me his kukri i asked him that about having to draw blood..... He said yes handed me the blade to look at then proceded to nip his finger with the blade and place it back so yes they do draw blood every time

the kukri legend gets misinterpreted the real legend is. if the kukri is drawn during battle "key word battle" and does not run red with the enemies blood the Gurkha must draw his own before the kukri can return to its scabbard.

      That makes more sense.

Regarding the yellow/orange cylinder, as they were donning what appear to be pfd's I'm thinking that it might be an EPIRB, attached by a cord to the pfd. Usually it would sit in it's own pocket, but we don't know the context of that particular shot. Later vision shows them conducting waterborne operations on Darwin Harbour which is 1, 200 square kilometres of water, if you fell in you'd need an EPIRB to be found and rescued, before the salt water crocodiles got to you.

The British army in Afghanistan and Iraq used the GPMG like this many times! I personally have fired it from the shoulder in combat.

It is something that we would have gotten in major crap for doing. Different Doctrine I guess.

I have fired the GPMG from the shoulder,we would advance down from the 100m to 50 m on the range etc, then from the 50 m would be firing from the hip, also did this in jungle lane shooting.Served with 1 RNZIR in Malaya ,Singapore early 1980's.

@@terryharris1291 Thanks for your reply. Yes, in certain circumstances it's 100% necessary to fire from the shoulder or hip. Thanks brother.✊
