Rescued Hens See Snow for the First Time

  • Animal Place intern Andrea White captured these precious moments of hens rescued from battery cages experience snow for the first time. In July, Animal Place rescued 3,000 hens, saving them from being gassed by an egg farm - standard practice when hens reach the age of 1-2 on egg farms.
If you want to help animals like these hens - consider veganism. So long as hens are seen as "egg factories" and commodities, they will be treated with callous disregard as will their brothers. Male chicks are all killed when they are born - 150-200 million a year.
The hens shown in this video are available for adoption into permanent, loving homes: animalplace.org/adoptable_bird...

It is fascinating to see the hens trying to work out what this new white stuff is. Their reaction is priceless and oddly enough, I have a story which features a similar human reaction.
In 1973, while I was attending a Canadian college, just north of Toronto, one of my fellow students was from Jamacia. She had no previous exposure to snow and reacted much like the hens did in the video after our first snowfall that year.
Her level of confusion and uncertainty was pretty amusing to Canadians. She was more than just a little intimidated by snow, a fact that was clear enough by her terrified reaction when hit with a snowball.
In fact the hens in the video adjusted to snow much more quickly and with less panic than did my Jamacian friend.

Awe bless their hearts. They looked so scared and have already been through so much that it was hard to trust what to happen Next , but faced their fears and tried new things and just had to lean not on their own understanding but test the ( frozen )‘waters 😂 and venture forward ... and as soon as the others who were also afraid saw that it was ok when the first few made it across the Ics cold threshold , they began to feel safer about also braving the new experience... it shows us a lot about life , no matter if it’s a bird or human being under new conditions , especially after being afraid to face the new , when weve known trauma In our lives .... such a special message can be found in this ... it also did just hurt my heart thinking about how
They have likely been all too glad just to survive
So many times , Already in fear of so Much around them . It was visible not Just a sigh of relief , but a joy that Came over them , when they realized everything was still ok and that they’d reached this milestone , unknown and unseen . And it saddens me that an animal meant to be among the wild would’ve never even known at all, the conditions of nature they’d have instinctively been ready to experience had not been for their lives being altered by captivity ... I just bet they’ve seen and endured a lot. Good for them !

A battery farm closed down when i was a kid in Australia.
They were selling all the hens for 50c each so my Mum and Dad bought 40 of them.
About half died within a few weeks due to the shock and the fact that they were already in pretty bad shape unfortunately. The remaining ladies stayed with us for years and years and lived much better lives.
Most of them never grew back a majority of their feathers or had wonky legs but they were all so sweet and trusting despite the horrible treatment they had endured.

My old mother now aged 93 had some free hens home in her childhood. I love how she speaks of them, their habit what they are fond of.. i would have some - to love them - if only i could go back to land.. i am no longer young either .. and I eat eggs only coming from hens out of bio farms with serious certicate and fulfilling far more than the european union asks for to grant a bio label. I think these hens must have been removed from the battery cages some time ago as they all seem to be fully covered with feathers. Ex-battery hens in other videos seem to have large bald patches and hardly any feathers at all when they've been more recently removed. This is especially so when battery conditions produce aggressive behaviours such as plucking the feathers from other hens. The method used to prevent this behaviour is to trim their beaks; awful!
Glad to see that these ones appear to be in a healthier state. Well done to those who removed them from the battery farm! For anyone who would like some clarification on labelling and where their eggs come from in the UK, the RSPCA has a useful information page:

I have 2 chickens that are going on 6 years old. Their egg production has pretty much stopped yet they (plus my 10 new chickens) take all my table scraps so I don't throw food away. Their manure is great to compost for my garden. Lastly they are very entertaining to observe. Having backyard chickens is very rewarding.
