Understand, this breed of chicken…. Cornish cross that I raised is ready to butcher at 7-9 weeks of age. They are so heavy they can barely walk. I put mine out in the grass for some free range time. They waddled the 30 feet back to the feeder to sit in front of it. My home raised chickens were no tastier than store bought, the kill/butcher day wasn’t much fun. I got no satisfaction or pleasure from it. So, unless your a vegetarian who never eats meat you need to understand that commercial meat production keeps blood off our hands so we can pretend we’re virtuous, loving and wonderful people. I’m going to continue to eat meat but I will not be raising animals for my own consumption. Until you have raised animals to kill and slaughter you have no understanding of the breeds and the process. Oh, and it was the most expensive chicken I’ve ever bought…. So there was no savings there either. Maybe if I breeded chickens to raise for slaughter I might be able to break the cost down. Otherwise I had about $25 in each chicken.

FYI, fruits and veggies are the primary source of carbohydrates for anyone and as for protein, 50% of meat eaters get their protein from plants. Nuts, beans, seeds, soy, and impossible burgers are all sources of protein.

This is sad this year i have 2 broilers and i rasied them very well the day my Mom said that they need to be slaughtered and i cried so hard compare to other chicken's who can spend their life for 10 years not like these :(
Chicken can lay only 100 eggs and they have difficulty after that. Death is their mercy of suffering from bottom pain. Also roosters cause heavy stress because of natural aggression after 8 montha.
That's why I minimized my meat consumption. We shouldn't forget that WE could be those poor chicken. We were born as humans for some mystery reasons but we could be born as cows or birds instead. And ask yourself: if you would be born as a chicken, would you like this "life"?

I don't free range them...don't have the space; rather, I put them in a chicken tracker and move them on fresh grass daily. It's a lot of work but worth it. At least my chicken get fresh air, sunshine, water, grass and bugs daily. Not to mention treats. : ) More people would be vegetarians if they had to butcher their own meat.

Broiler chickens are selectively bred to grow super fast, for meat production. Their diet also excludes extra calcium as they are not raised for eggs. Their 5 week of experience and lack of other reference experience means that they won’t really be that upset, unlike humans who live long lives and would have experienced both good and bad. Trying to project your own experience onto them, or anthromophosize these broiler chicken is but social justice parading to mask unfounded guilt. If they were subject to daily beatings, physical labor, starved, sexual abuse, social humiliation, then yes, that would be something wrong. Lack of provision of intellectual stimulation however, I.e providing PlayStation or fancy gyms/spas/touring vacation equivalents on the other hand, is not abuse. Depriving them of predator stress should also not be considered abuse. A chicken left in the wild doesn’t cultivate the field or garden it lives in, it uses it to hide from predator, and go about eating and copulating. It doesn’t usually participate in play behavior either. Being exposed to danger, there is a necessity for the mother to rear the chicks til they achieve sufficient independence. Even so, the chicks and chicken can get killed by wild animals like foxes. If all life is equal, then so are insects and ‘pests’ like rats and cockroaches. They get abused, trapped, poisoned, shot, killed, brutalized in all sorts of ways. Warfarin essentially cause rats to bleed out internally and die. Why not post videos on actual animal abuse? Life isn’t equal, many humans suffer more than these broiler chickens. In fact, the broiler chickens look fine and not stressed. They perhaps look a little bored and ugly from how their genetics have been selected for, but they haven’t been beaten daily or have been subjected to other such abuse.

Poor meat chickens. 😔 I’m gonna go sit with my chickens now. They’re so happy and pretty and spoiled. Colorful shiny feathers glowing iridescent in the sun, deep bright red combs and waddles. Poofy little cheek tufts and beards. 3 sweet roos, one of which is really cuddly. And several inquisitive and quirky pullets and hens that give me a rainbow assortment of eggs.
They seem to grow at an abnormally fast rate, hence the weird skin patches, weird legs, and fat bodies. Poor souls. I know, and I do live in meat, but I hope we can find more ethical ways of our livestock and, hopefully, no more baby meat products, including mass milk production. Screw mass production. Let’s have more alternatives and find balance. I can only wish that the world is kinder.

In defense of the poultry industry I know farmers who would love to have them free range but alot die because of hawks and eagles since it's it's illegal to shoot them idk about coyotes and wild animals but I guess it depends on the state

Chickens live about 4 years in the wild if they are pets. However, a real chicken would probably live around one year before a hawk, coyote, or fox eats them alive. Also, most of the babies will die from predators and only a few would make it to adulthood. We are acting like if they were free, they would live this wonderful life in the wild. They all would get ripped apart by a predator and eaten alive. At least humans give them somewhat of a peaceful ending by being stunned before they are killed. They are prey animals and are meant to be eaten.
Prey animals are not supposed to be eaten, why do you think the gazelle runs from the lion? All animals evolve to keep their species alive only. Prey animals sometimes even kill predator animals. Also we want the broiler chicken to be bred out of existence because of it's painful life.

Adult homegrown free range roosters and hens are very tasty . 3 year old mature roosters especially

I own 10, I have always owned chickens. Very smart animals with tons of personality, and character. Much more than you think of them as.

Wow farming chickens are pretty amazing. They grow so fast and look at all that meat. They would make for a fairly nutritious meal.

Chickens live about 4 years in the wild if they are pets. However, a real chicken would probably live around one year before a hawk, coyote, or fox eats them alive. Also, most of the babies will die from predators and only a few would make it to adulthood. We are acting like if they were free, they would live this wonderful life in the wild. They all would get ripped apart by a predator and eaten alive. At least humans give them somewhat of a peaceful ending by being stunned before they are killed. They are prey animals and are meant to be eaten.
Maybe chickens can't survive in the wild but the red junglefowl they came from live for 10-30 years in the wild
Prey animals are not supposed to be eaten, why do you think the gazelle runs from the lion? All animals evolve to keep their species alive only. Prey animals sometimes even kill predator animals. Also we want the broiler chicken to be bred out of existence because of it's painful life.
