    After watching this, I asked my wife if she thought an amulet of speaking common would be of any value. She immediately said, "I put it on the dog." This is how to chose a wife, fellas. She immediately saw the value of having the party dog running around yelling "oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! Can we play fetch? I love fetch. Can I chase an orc? That was fun last ti-Is that bacon?" I like how you were just throwing stuff out and just accidentally came up with an unintentionally awesome magic item. I absolutely love this idea of a magic item of common speak. I definitely need to incorporate something similar into my games in the future! Would love to see how my players would utilize it!

    I've got a small addition to the weapon part, and touching on the monk comment.
    When making/giving a magic item intended for a specific character, make sure to keep the fantasy of that character in mind. A barbarian that thrives on smashing people around with a hammer, may not have a lot of fun when given a magic dagger to use, even if that dagger somehow does more damage. Similar with the monk example. If someone made a monk with the fantasy of "my body is my only weapon", then giving them a bow will not be to their liking. So giving them flight like in the example is a good option.

    Played in a game once where we got a Ring of Spell Storing. I suggested filling it with Enlarge/Reduce and put it on my Fighter. The Sorcerer kept it, filled it with five Healing Words. Though the game's gone on so long that I became the GM, the Sorcerer has not used the ring once and has forgotten they've had it multiple times when party members could have used healing.

    For that last one, I had an idea of creating magic modifying items that would allow a caster to spend an appropriate level spell slot and be able to cast the items spell. So the item can give the party access to a spell they might not regularly prepare, but still might need from time to time, but there's still a cost when they use it.

    I like awarding weapons that level-up with the characters - not literally level-per-level, but at certain benchmarks. It lets me start small, and gradually add or improve features. It's easier to start conservative and tweak up than start big and have that character wreck encounters and leave the other players feeling like supporting cast.

      Do the items change appearance as they level up? I remember that from that old anime series Magic Knight Rayearth, where the characters weapons and armor changed appearance as the characters got more experienced with them.

    • @LordOz3
      @LordOz3 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JMcMillen They can, but it depends on if it makes sense for the weapon's background. One unlocked different weapon types with each upgrade with different situational abilities, so the character would change the weapon depending on what they were fighting.

      @@kinsan89i do the same for homebrew weapons, but only as rewards for milestone achievements, like the BBEG of the season. The weapon usually has 1 ability (based on what the character in mind likes doing, for my barbarian it was actually a two handed sword that could move on it's own and attack targets if commanded by barbarian since he liked to sheet his weapons and use fists in combat) and a + enchantment equal to proficiency bonus. Grows with levels, has a fun gimmick, not overpowered even at +6 since you can go above that if you really want in a game

    How you describe monks makes me think of wizards in older editions. At level one, cast magic missile once, maybe twice a day, then it's your quarterstaff. At high levels, rewrite reality.

      Playing 1e with some friends, I was a level one wizard. I never got to stop being a level one wizard as it is also important to note that some classes needed more xp to level up than others. My most damaging spell was a 0th from some random source book that let me summon 1 bee.

    Hi, I just wanted to drop a quick comment (mostly humorous) because it dropped into my head while watching this) about the ring that helps you find pebbles. That ring would be super useful to someone who created a build around having minions who throw magic stones after you cast the spell. You could always have a bag full of pebbles at the ready.

    I got a "meh" response to a magic handle I made that can attach to any weapon can extend up to 10 ft and cannot break but after enough damage will retract to dagger handle size. No one saw the possibility of going from falchion to glave and back again. (Sigh)

    For the example of "The Amulet of Common Speech", I had an actual example happen to me. I was given the boots of springing and striding, which increased my movement to 30 feet, tripled my jump distance, and prevented encumber or heavy armor from slowing me down. Here's the thing: I was a Kenku Rogue(30 feet of movement), who never wore anything heavier than light armor, only carried the bare necessities and weapons, and never jumped over a long distance. I wound up trading these in(along with Boots of Sand Traversal) for Boots of Elvenkind much later in the campaign and I never looked back.

    I hope you can appreciate that ring of pebble detection more.
    I provide this scenario! A gnome magic trader is spotted along the road as they are traveling, and has items that the players desire. The gnome presents them with two rings, one a ring of invisibility, the other a ring of invisibility. The gnome tells them they can only choose one, and to choose very wisely! The difference, one is a powerful magic item that turns you invisible, the other ring turns invisible when you put it on.
    The point I'm getting at is that "gag/useless" magic items are a great gift that can give the players, because they can give the players a laugh, allow a player to try and find some extremely niche usefulness out of it (the druid with magic stone jumps at the pebble detection ring), and provides your world with another point that not all magic is all powerful, and even minor magic or failures can be fun to come across.

    Best advice I have got: upgrade sideways not up.
    Adding +1 to stuff is eventually meaningless cos you just increase monster numbers to accomodate. Instead, give an ability with utility use.

    I gave my level 3 DND group some of the very low power magic items from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. They absolutely loved the bag that can produce any spice, the helm that hides your face in darkness except for glowing red eyes, and pot of awakening that can make one awakened shrub over 30 days. They got a lot of use out of those and now the magic items they're getting at level 5 are having a bigger impact.

    I found a couple of documents that give some uncommon items for the characters at lvl 1 and grow stronger at levels 5, 10, and 15. I am limiting it to one per person from among the 4 PDFs, but it has an amulet for monks that gives them some increased AC, and a couple of flurry of blows without cost. These can really help keep martials in the game and show growth over the game too

    I like giving out weird, fun knick-knacks at low levels and see if the players come up with cool uses. A statue of a frog that sings Ragtime girl on command - used to lure out a guard. Boomerang arrow - used as a grappling hook. My absolute favorite was a "The third hand" - a glove that on command freezes in place for 10 minutes holding up to 5 pounds while you can slip your hand out and do other things. It was used to lock a crime scene from the inside.

    I like having lots of magic items in my game, so I've tried to focus on small items. One character in my game worships Loki and I gave them a "Fenris Charm" that gives +1 AC vs Winter Wolves... one of the barbarians has an eagle skull that gives them an extra rage once per long rest. They also have a tankard of sobriety... put anything in it and you can't get drunk.

    One of the things I do in game is try to almost never give people something that increase their AC or accuracy. I found that magic items that do interesting things with damage are fun and interesting without breaking things. In one game I gave the players a weapon that could add 1d4 elemental damage of a specific type and as they adventured they where able to add more types and they could change the damage type to one they had once per day. It worked really well without breaking the game.

    I created a fun "Magical Feat"; it is restricted to only Sorcerers, Warlocks, and Artificers as well as only Elven Races & Teiflings.
    I call it "Pyromania" and it grants them complete Fire/Heat/Noxious Gas Immunity, as well as replaces/restricts ALL SPELLS/SLOTS with INFINITE FIREBALLS that can't be upcast or replaced so is just baseline Fireball & only Cantrip is INFINITE FIREBOLT, only additional restrictions requires merely having the components & you have to cast Fireball at least 3 times a day or suffer 3d6 Psychic Damage. It also grants you the ability to use Torches as weapons that deal 1d6 Blunt Damage+Strength Modifier+1d4 Fire Damage and grants them the ability to Speak/Read/Understand Primal Languages. HOWEVER, it also makes them suffer TWICE AS MUCH COLD/WATER DAMAGE and have Disadvantage for everything when in Wet Environments/Rainy Weather.

    Part of it might be the fact that 5e doesn't really have a robust system for developing magic items.
    I remember 3.0/3.5 had "craft wonderous magic item" and such. The video game Neverwinter Nights (used 3.0 adapted rules) had an item creator in it's worldbuilding toolset, and magic items would show a level restriction depending on how many and how strong the enhancements were - it was easy to make an item that would require lvl 20++ just to equip.
    IIRC, AD&D had some relatively simple rules for magic item creation too in the DMG, but like 5e could be stacked and overpowered.

    I'd say KISS is a grandfathered in phrase and not so much to worry about, but that's just me.
    Also, what about magic items with abilities that unlock as the PC levels up? Perhaps it can be roleplayed as the item being infused with additional power during a particularly climactic moment (which just so happens to be when the PC is about to level up)?
    And finally, the Ring of Pebble Detection sounds like a really funny joke magic item that the party has to go out of their way to identify and go "oh... what!?" and then, some time later, finding a pebble becomes actually important!

    In a 3E game at 8th level party found a magical helmet that doubles your ST, so 18 ST becomes 36 ST. However, it also changed your alignment. Us being Good Guys and not so power hungry we didn't use it personally. The idea was to use it on a hypothetical future bad guy. We eventually forgot about it. When we were 14th level my cleric got hit with a spell that changed his alignment from Lawful Good to Chaotic Evil. A player remembered the helmet. After subduing my character they put the helmet on me to cure me, and my 20 ST became 40.

    The way I navigate this is.
    #1 Give them something that does what they already can and often do.
    #2 It works once per long rest or it has less than 4 charges and has a chance to break when out of charges before it regains its charges.
    #3 Make it risky to use.

    I am running a campaign where the players are amnesiacs with a blank character sheet they fill out. One of them has a Pipe of Remembrance that I gave them at the beginning, but because he couldn’t remember what it was he never smoked it. Or at least he hasn’t yet. I intend to tell him what it is at the end of the campaign if he doesn’t figure it out before then. I can’t wait to see the look on his face.

    Ring of Ever Life
    After every 6 seconds, or at the start of your every turn in combat, you recover 50 Hit Points.
    Curse. You cannot gain Hit Points other than using this ring. You cannot gain Temporary Hit Points. Your Maximum Hit Points is reduced by half. Upon dropping to 0 Hit Points, instead of making Death Saving Throws, you instantly die.

    My DM gave me an OP magic item, it gives me 2 extra spells per spell slot and any spells that do damage it gives me two extra damage dice that are always max and there is a chance to overpower the spell, but there is a chance absolutely nothing happens and a chance for a wild magic surge to happen and it’s a d10000 table, also any other spell caster within 10 feet of me is subject to the rings power. So far it’s been pretty fun.

    i have ideas for homebrew magic items:
    "suffer-ring" -> your melee attacks deal 1d6 extra damage, but you take 1d4 damage each attack
    and the upgraded "glorious suffer-ring" -> your melee attacks deal 1d20 extra damage, but you take 1d10 damage each attack
    extra damage output at the cost of taking damage yourself

    • @sokkaalbertus7407
      @sokkaalbertus7407 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      would you consider the 1d4 as magical damage? I interpreted it as dealing the same (potentially nonmagical) damage type as the melee weapon in which case heavy armor masters would love the ring

    • @wypmangames
      @wypmangames 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@sokkaalbertus7407 i would say armor wouldnt affect it since the ring has to be worn underneath armor, so it damaging you is guaranteed and not avoidable

    I had an adventure where a dryad, a pixie, and a sprite, asked for help. Between them, their languages are Common, Elvish, and Sylvan, but if I didn't have the Sprite (which spoke common) I would have been in a bind - without that, the Dryad and Pixie would only have been able to communicate in Sylvan or Elvish. Having one creature speak to the party in common as well as translate what the other two are saying, is taking on that one creature.
    That amulet of the common tongue is definitely niche, but useful in that niche.

    • @THEPELADOMASTER
      @THEPELADOMASTER 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You do know that as a DM you can just say that the dryad speaks common, right? If your only reason to put an NPC was to use them as a translator, you could've just had the other NPC speak common.

    Not all Magic Items are made equal. There are some Common Magic Items (most are situational at best), one of the best is the Moon-Touched Blade. This common Magic item only 50gp but is so good for Humans as it can be any sword or are and all it does is act as a torch when drawn. It does bypass resistance, however if a PC has 50gp, no reason you cannot give them one even at level 1.

    I find the 5e rarity system doesn't entirely do what it's supposed to, and still has to be taken with a pinch of salt.
    Example, a Potion of Invisibility has the effect of a 2nd level spell, and is Very Rare, and it's a single use item
    Winged boots give the effect of a 3rd level spell, and recharge for continual uses of them, and are uncommon?!
    I'd totally give a lower level party the potion, but I sure as s*** wouldn't give out boots of flying until 10th/11th kinda level!

    Once I did give my party a magic item that did something they could already do....and it turned out quite epic... it was a magic stone that when used cleaned the user... yep, it was essentially an instant shower ^^
    How did it turn epic ? well, the stone ended up in the hands of the shaman of a group of goblins... which one of them fumbled with the stone and activated it and said goblin was thrown out.. because he smelled funny... then died in the forest attacked by a wolf just moments before the party found it's corpse.
    Seeing a clean goblin wearing clean clothes, if you disregard the obviously recent wound that killed it, had the party overthinking there was a settlement of civilized of, somehow, good aligned goblins nearby and that they didn't needed to be cautious and kinda just knocked on the goblin's cavern 'door' ^^

    Bandana of the chameleon: An unremarkable bandana, when worn the wearer is invisible unless viewed by one eye or crossed eyes. The invisibility is broken if the wearer moves as chameleons are only camouflaged when remaining still.
    I have been coming up with useless items for a foolish merchant who follows the party around, convinced he has the best when in reality none of his products are all that useful.

    The True Elder Wand.
    You can permanently kill everything instantly. Even immortal higher gods. You can point the wand at any direction, imagine any being on this or some other plane and say Avada Kedavra, and, boom, that being is permanently dead in all planes of existence. You can use it any time, without spending an action, or reaction, even in the middle of the action of another player or NPC. No rolls needed, no damage rolls, no saving rolls.
