  • IMPORTANT It's crucial to understand that in Australia there are far more raptors then probably anywhere else in the world per ratio, there are raptors out every... single... day.... We fly with them daily just as the millions of wild parrots do.
    This is where you should NEVER compare a pet indoor parrot to a properly trained free flight parrot. They are apples and oranges in terms of development.
    Our parrots are able to think on the wing, respond and manage danger appropriately just as any other wild parrot would. As stated prior we fly alongside raptors daily, not all raptors are a threat and it actually takes specific factors to be at play for attack to occur.
    While our parrots can be outdoors alongside raptors without issue this does not mean a pet indoor bird can be placed in the same situation, the moment a pet indoor bird is spotted the risks become very real. I explain this in detail here www.adventuresofroku.com/Educational.php
    -
    The important thing is to not let ignorance drive your fear and cause you to act out by posting nasty comments, instead read up on the science based information first and get the facts to form a accurate picture, this is in regard to people making continual comparisons to pet indoor birds to free flight ones.
    Here is an example I have come up with to highlight the flaw in this thinking.
    Someone states "this is irresponsible! are you not aware a hawk/eagle can just snatch your bird at any minute?! are you not afraid?!"
    Now... to me I see this statement/question the same as one parent (bird owner or concerned viewer) asking another parent by the swimming pool "are you not afraid of you child drowning?! its very deep!"
    Now if you have contact and facts it can look like this.
    Parent A has a 9yo male child, who has been taking swimming lessons since he was pretty much a toddler, he has now reached an advanced level of swimming and competes.
    Parent B has a 9yo male child who has never really had much to do with swimming and does not even know the basics.
    Both children are the same age, same build, same height & same weight... however their brain development and experiences are drastically different and if both were to be placed in the middle of the pool the outcome would be horrific for one but not the other.
    Parent A is relaxed and confident watching their child swim because they are competent and have the ability.
    Parent B is driven by fear and worry due to their child not being competent and or little knowledge that children that young can even swim....(ie birds free fly) so you see having facts and context helps. So please be sure to read through the info in the link above and in pinned post.

    As you can see asiatics (alexandrines/ringnecks etc) love to fly loooong, wide and high! it's beautiful. it's worth noting that this is our friends property (horse School) so her birds are very very familiar with the entire property (over 1000acres) which is why they love to fly up near the house, so dont panic or worry it's all normal and safe :)
    -
    Alexandrines and ringnecks are extremely fast fliers, not many if any of the parrots can really keep up with them which is why Aslan (male Alex) got a friend, one of my baby female alexandrines! :D it brings me so much joy to see her doing so well and having fun :)
    -
    Its Roku & Pabu's turn for a free flight day at the farm! (as seen in last video uploads it was Korra's)
    As I've explained in many other videos Roku, Korra and Pabu cannot often be taken out together due to their dynamics creating hostile environments and each one or at least x2 getting hurt and upset.
    Sibling rivalry/jealousy can be a yucky thing when your so excited to be out having fun with dad!
    -
    Everyone LOVES this particular tree, its not actually a willow but it reminds us of the whomping will from Harry Potter, it also takes a beating on playdates because our little feathered monsters thrash around it like its a brand new playground and they only have 10mins of playtime left lol
    -
    Birds names and species in the "Playing in Whomping Willow videos
    Roku - blue and gold macaw (male)
    Khyber - blue and gold macaw (male)
    Kevin - galah (male)
    Pabu - major Mitchells cockatoo (male)
    Marley - eclectus (male)
    Panda - eclectus (male)
    Serraph - eclectus (female)
    Aslan - alexandrine (male)
    Arwyn - alexandrine (female)
    Bumi - yellow tailed black cockatoo (male)
    Mizu - green cheek conure/ turquoise yellow side (female)
    Miko - green cheek conure (male)

    Bloody hell I would be sweating bullets if my birds where free flying outdoors like that

    • @AdventuresofRoku
      @AdventuresofRoku  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      as long as you understand thats like freaking out and sweating over watching kids swim in a pool. Fears come from a place of unknown, however when you understand the brain development, processes, risk factors, protective factors and training you realise its nothing to freak out about.
      The biggest mistake is comparing a pet indoor parrot to a free flight parrot, a more realistic comparison would be a free flight parrot to a wild one. Just like a child has to meet milestone and competency to swim safely outdoors so does a parrot :) www.adventuresofroku.com/Educational.php has all the detailed info if interested :)

    • @______-xh4pn
      @______-xh4pn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Adventures of Roku Well, that‘s bullshit. A bird free flying is similar to a dog being off-leash. The difference is the dog is domesticated, and stands a greater chance of coming back because they actually evolved to need humans. It’s also a bit more dangerous with birds than dogs because dogs are terrestrial like humans, and birds... fly. Humans cannot fly. It’s also more dangerous in terms of predation. Parrots are preyed upon by many predators including snakes, birds of prey, domestic cats, wild felines, and canids. The truth is that each time you let your parrot free fly, you risk their untimely death. Comparing birds flying to kids swimming is total BS, though.

    Fun fact : everytime I read "raptors" I see this : encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR2sxCv6L-6oCxpou64gQGTqQ0zi3eFY0lIl9q_lr3UMW5KXhcHgQ That's because in French, "raptors" are these dinosaurs, and we call the type of birds which you call "raptors", "rapaces" (said with a perfect french accent :D). The first time I saw this word in your videos I was just like "Wow wtf ?! Why is he talking about dinosaurs ?!"

    how do you folks keep predators away OR they are not found in the area?

    • @AdventuresofRoku
      @AdventuresofRoku  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      we live in australia, theres predators out 95% of the time we are. There were 4 in this video alone haha
      Raptors are only a threat when specific factors are at play, parrots are only at high risk again... with specific factors at play.
      Important to understand parrots exist in the wild successfully without human intervention, all along side raptors every day. They are able to do so because of key behaviours and brain development. If you go to the bottom of www.adventuresofroku.com/Educational.php its explained in far more detail.
      However crucial to know that assuming raptors are a immediate threat is no different to saying a shark will attack or kill you if you swim in the ocean. Context and science is needed to understand the risk.

    Ugh. This so makes me want to own a bird. But I only want to do so if I'm certain I can provide the bird with an amazing life. I work four nights a week and I live in a decent-sized studio apartment in New York City. I've got the will to learn and adapt--do you guys think I could pull it off? Be honest! I was thinking of starting with a budgie or a quaker....maybe ringneck.

    • @AdventuresofRoku
      @AdventuresofRoku  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A smaller bird would be ideal, that way going outdoors is not a necessity. I highly recommend a male Cockatiel they are in my opinion one of the most underrated parrots. At the end of the day the only time you should not get a parrot is if you cannot provide a bare minimum of 4hrs one on one per day. Remembering this is the bare minimum not the goal.
      Natural behaviours for a parrot are to be social and be around others 24/7 not a half hour here and there in a cage. I would also highly recommend watching the documentary called "Parrot Confidential" here www.adventuresofroku.com/Educational.php and also have a read through the articles :)
      Perfect for prepping a new owner! I'm sure you will be amazing! ps I love budgies and quakers as well :)

    • @whereisevan
      @whereisevan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback. I can definitely afford to spend at least 4 hours or so a day with a bird. And I have some fantastic neighbors who have expressed interest in helping out in the event that I'm unavailable. As far as cockatiels go, I actually used live with two 'tiels back when I first moved to the City and rented a room from a family who had a bunch of birds--so that is definitely an option. I'm also actually considering an Emerald Toucanette, as I've read that they are well-suited to apartment living and a load of fun to be around. And actually, I live right across the street from the second largest park in the city, so free-flight isn't something that's altogether out of the question.

    • @AdventuresofRoku
      @AdventuresofRoku  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      aww fantastic, well the free flight info is all on the link above it highlights the reality that not all birds can or should be free flown. Most importantly though is that documentary thats a must see. :)
