100% true. The root to change a bad habit is to change your belief around the perceived value of such habit. Being sober 1 year and 9 months, best decision ever. Alcohol is just a normalized poison.

7 months no alcohol, after drinking for 13+ years. I recommend reading atomic habits as well. Swapped one bad habit out for a good one. Ex: I traded in the drank for working out.

@@paintsilj ...until the veritable life crisis we all experience at some time or another. Then it often accelerates because it becomes self-treatment for anxiety or depression... it is a very thin door between "fun drinking" and self-treatment drinking. I have a friend who drank socially all his life, then the wife died of cancer in their home and when I met him he looked like a homeless dude despite having been a financially successful alpha type male.

Inspiring video, Leon! Overcoming alcohol thoughts and addiction can be a very challenging process, but it's possible with the right support and strategies. Alcohol is one of the most destructive and harm causing drugs, not only to the individual but also society. It can cause tolerance, addiction, disease, and death. Ask any doctor, ambulance, or police officer what they deal with each weekend. Take Care Everyone!👋❤

I don't know if other people who attained sobriety like myself have had this same experience but what I have found is that after 7 years of sobriety if I do have a drink ( to please my host, usually) I get vaguely nauseated. It's as if my body is saying "NO. I already dealt with that and worked your liver over-time all those years when you were a weekend lush and now I'm gonna react like you're drinking turpentine." I had the same experience when I gave up eating fast food almost daily. Went back for "just one" delicious fast food combo and my body says "THIS is what I used to like?? Not anymore dude!" as the food doesn't taste good anymore so I cook at home instead. To place my experience in context, I was not a daily drinker. I had a job in which I could NOT be hung over daily so I was a weekend drunk (which may have saved ne from some of the worst effects of alcohol that could've landed me in a hospital) but still learned that alcohol is a DRAMA MAGNET so I'm glad I hit my own bottom (without killing anyone else), went to some AA meetings, and finally said ENOUGH. Sobriety, to me, is a low key and subtle sense of tranquility, freeing energy both physically and emotionally. Ridding oneself of underlying shame is liberating in itself!

What if your belief about picking up goes something like this. Yes it's a slow poison, yes it kills brain cells but these things happen in unperceptively slow ways like aging. What I do know to be true in the short term is incredibly faithful relief of tension fear and worries and gives me a burst of energy. The hangover, I've dealt with a thousand times, I'm used to it and it's never killed me yet. Of course it's a bad deal in the long run but it is a temporary escape that works like a charm every time. I look at a case of beer like a day off work, not some evil brew that's conspiring to kill me. On top of that it inspires me to do things I normally would not have the courage to start, make me think in more based sensible ways, and see many things more honestly. My real thoughts come out because all the filters are down. I tell my wife how I really feel about something I would normally repress just to keep the piece. I've lost relationships over alcohol that one, I should not have gotten into in the first place, and two, would have stayed in much longer had it not been for alcohol. In short it spared me years of heartache down the road. I drink because it works for me. Yes I miss dental appointments, and fall down and crack a rib now and then, but really no more so that the normal guy next door. Every society has found it beneficial and kept it on as a tradition, it can't be that bad or they would have looked down on it like staying away from rattle snakes.

This makes sense to a certain extent. I think when you look at the science more behind the ethanol you will see how dangerous it is. It is on par with substances such as heroin its just about the dosage instead. It will shorten your life dramatically but if you are okay with the one shot you get at life being significantly decreased that is your choice.

I hear ya. I've had that same mindset for quite some time. And for a person with suicidal tendencies, alcohol can be extremely tempting! On the one hand, I like having a couple because it helps me to not give in and "check out". But then, after having too many, I will suddenly lose inhibitions about doing it and almost give in.
Also, addiction can happen so quick, it's not even funny. It was just last year that I was drinking maybe twice a week. Now, I can take 15 to 20oz of vodka a day and only feel like I USED to after a couple drinks.
      Alcohol is a big lie.

I remember a wedding i saw a family, wife husband and their two kids
All of them dressed sharply but by the end of the night the dad had gotten drunk
Acted like a complete ass, saving dumb $hit, the bride and groon were leaving at the end of the night with people lined up on both sides with sparklers
He was on one side acting like a 4 year old, talking about fighting someone
Waving the sparklers around, his wife staring at him the entire time, she looked to be beyond pissed off
To think dude walked in, seen like a good guy, but introduce booze, acted beyond stupid

Okay, for those random few people that can truly "drink in moderation" and not develop a problem; more power to 'em. But, one doesn't ever risk becoming an alcoholic if they don't ever take that first drink. It's that simple.
EDIT: And it can happen more rapidly than people realize. Contrary to popular belief, ANYONE can become an alcoholic; under the right set of circumstances. You take a guy that maybe drank once a month his whole life. Suddenly, his wife dies and he loses his home, etc. He can very easily slip into alcoholism. But, again, you don't ever have to worry about that, IF you don't ever take the first drink.

Unfortunately, people who are troubled and not growing in who they are, most people rely on alcohol to make them happy, give them courage etc. The more you drink and the longer you drink the more your body can absorb until it just becomes part of your daily routine and then you start saying things like:
"Life is short". No offense to you but many people have not succeeded in their lives because they have pioritized alcohol and it's sad because alcohol does not build into a person but rather gives them a false sense of belief that they are enjoying themselves.
