Their setup live back in the early 90's was totally mental, so many synths and Alesis sequencers. Amazing music, great lives and some of the geekiest guys i have ever seen.
Back in the day , late 80's early 90's saw orbital many times , best gig I saw, totally off it in manchester ( 1992 ) asked the sound guy what time were orbital playing. He said they just finished mate off my nutz
One of these little bunnies was feeling some effects! :D But Very informative. Good old Orbital. So nice to see them. So nice they Made it too, from those heady 90's! Thanks Guys. all these years later.
it was my mate mike that set up their ipad's on grid for them and showed paul how to use it ...then about 2 years after it phil remixed one of my tracks
Or he was imitating Mark Hamill after the premiere of TLJ when he learnt his favorite character died, not recollecting having filmed that scene himself.
i personally favour the Strabo V17 over the Ableton, it goes full force dynamic when coupled with a Tandroid Monosynth and an Italian flatbread with peppers..
Surely the unsung hero holding all these setups together is the Cardinal Grammeter, first introduced in the Turbo Encabulator. Truly a revelation when introduced to the musical world. th-cam.com/video/Ac7G7xOG2Ag/w-d-xo.html
Yep - He's certainly "experiencing" something - picked that up straight away - but hey, what a LOVELY smile he gave at the end (probably some relief too :D)
As much as I understand that technology advances and opens artists up to new worlds, I do kind of miss Orbital playing live with massive banks of synths and fx units. This pared down setup makes travelling easier but just seems like it is missing some of that soul. Not anything against using that type of gear and soft-synths, I mean without that I would never have been able to also get into music production as those hardware synths and vintage synths are damn expensive. I have just always associated Orbital with tons of gear, which you can still see bu watching videos of Phil showing his gear room.
I'm trying to introduce my Android pad into my set-up in a similar way but can't seem to get near anything I'm happy with. Android is severely lacking in usable progs, rubbishness matched by my command of these things.
might have been nice to hear a few examples. Found a nice little clip showing them actually using what looks similar to this setup: th-cam.com/video/SBlyjoBBCHU/w-d-xo.html
LP Fabra those are mainly just midi patterns laid out in the set order: they are sending those to the hardware, because it sounds good and it’s fun to play live.
The only sound that comes from a computer are the clips, which are basically triggers to stored samples. The interviewer should have asked about the colour coding of the clips.
saw them 25 years ago when they used musical instruments. Akai's and Emax's. Juno's and jupiters and Xpander. So sad to see ableton and iPads.... They may have been on DAT then but at least the gear was there.
I think it may give them more flexibility to change on the fly. Their sets are noticeably different than the old ones. I’m sure part of that is cause they’ve remade so many older tracks. But where they were performing instruments before, they seem to be more improvisational now, and I imagine Ableton has helped provide that flexibility. Sort of like how Sasha’s DJ sets completely changed when Ableton first came out. Hard to stay fresh for 30 years, gotta change it up somehow.
Tera Pixel Perhaps. They are brothers after all. But i think the annoyance vibe particularly from Orbital P not talking much was due to the staging works incessant clanging , rattling and reverse alarm bleeping.
@@gearyelton My bad, modules, mixer and the module with a keyboard. Orbital has interest, interviewer cum cameraman clearly doesn't by the quality of his shots, imo.
0:04 Guy in green: IM SO HAPPY WE ARE GETTING FILMED, WE ARE BECOMING REAL ROCKSTARS! OH MY GOD CANT WAIT TO SHOW MY SETUP TO HIM!. Guy in blue: Im so happy when this is done, who tf even is this interviewing us....?
Orbital are legends in electronica. They've been rockstars for a very long time. They are likely both annoyed by all the background noise, but the one brother is just usually happy.
Two of the best fellas in dance music.

Just wow

Orbital is my favorite techno group. They are great.
Orbital got me through some tough times
Same story! Actually their music is like a soundtrack of my life since 90's.
Orbital is all about being free. Be free dough boy 🔥
Orbital have been the soundtrack of my life. Normal nice blokes too.

That's awesome. What is the track name???
@ “what it is” … it’s on my page along with a Leeroy Thornhill remix too
'I wish i had ducks feet! You can av that! One of my faves! God bless you Orbital!Seen you 4 times live including glastonbury 2004! Best memories Xxx
The one in green looks like he's on the virge of transforming into a wherwolf.
On no! It’s a full moon tonight too!
For real. Hes on molly or something, lucky bastard
.
lardosian I think he was being inspired by the background sounds.
Or he was imitating Mark Hamill after the premiere of TLJ when he learnt his favorite character died, not recollecting having filmed that scene himself.
Drugs. How else could they make such music :)
Your local music store: "you know, this $4k synth is used by the pros"
The pros: "over here we've got the Ipads"
Awesome. Thanks for catching that info, it could have been 2 hours long I'd have been happy.
Amazing to hear those guys talking about their setup so genuinely, as if it was their first tour.
Man you are 2 musical wizards
Love your muzik /sound ❤so much ❤🎶🎶🎶
And seeing your equipment is mind blowing
It’s so good to see 😎
Tempest users: Always surprised and over excited to see other people using a Tempest! Yes I am. 🤗🤗
,man I used to LOVE to love Orbital. ‘Lush’ was a favorite single. I’d love to see an interview.
So nice awesome to learn from masters themselves
Right lads, you're on with three other bands and have 15 minutes to change over.
Your guys set up is rad!

nothing beats patching hommus tahini garlic through the Matrixbrutes matrix patchbay. Analog out straight to your throat
Not the sun-dried tomato option on the filters?
Like any good antipasto best applied in the pre-filter stage

At the end there I thought Phil was gonna freak out.
Yep - He's certainly "experiencing" something - picked that up straight away - but hey, what a LOVELY smile he gave at the end (probably some relief too :D)
Probably a tune hit his head with all that banging and clanging going on in the background
Amazing comment :) made me laugh out loud
I noticed that right as I read it
It's like when your coming up strong
proper performance - bravo
Years ago, they were asked by someone to take this route and use a computer onstage, and they told him to fock off.
Phil always looks like he's ready to start raving at the drop of a hat.
He looks high as shit.
Sampled the sampler yep these are official madlads. Thanks for the intr% view propane is not a toy
nice set up. Its takes alot of knowledge….
Dude on the right looks like he's coming up a little from 5 mins onwards hahaha
Off his chops
Hmmmm they cut Paul off just when it started getting interesting...
It's always Orbital Time.
It would have been to see a demo from their point of view.
That did make me laugh, I couldn’t stop 😀
Last time I saw there setup was they had 8 ipads and a disc full of loops..for your mac..give it up!
"which is quite good fun actually..."
I wanna know what they got the sans amp in the mix for!
phills ready for chime 2019 version

They still do stuff with tons of their synths but seems like it varies what they can take on the road cause some of the synths they have are massive

5:50 Epic zone out
So basically your saying that basically that thing basically controls the basic thing
Giants!!! : P
Pretty cool.
But which brother raved harder? ;)
Can't believe you're trying to hurry them up and end this.
Sorry, but we got a late start, and I had an appointment for another interview. I regret it, too.
...What does "regret" mean?
@@sunhammer420 Bwa-ha!
I love my ipad
this is much easier to understand on mute
I still don't know what those white rectangle things are that look like calculator rulers. I see them taking a couple out before each tune.
SADCOCK1970 they're a list of time codes and levels for whatever synth they place it on
Could also be channel label strips for a mixing desk, although it doesn't look like they use a big hardware mixer. I know Underworld do this though.
I thought this was a joke about Xanax.
We all sound like nerds!
Animus ... and it feels sooo good 😉
Cool
basically
Are they iPads with the 30pin connector??
tronlady1 I think they said 2012, so more than likely.

He completely cut him off and took over HS !
Best bit!
Fantastic! :)
what submixer is that? Glad to see people using synths instead of software
Phil is having an LSD flashback
Phil is like this is awkward
Dude in green jacket is rolling yall. Heavy breathing and cant keep mouth or body still. Am i wrong?

They've just said they've got the entire set as one track in ableton!? Then why they need so much hardware on stage?

Ableton, hahaha they use to use ACID LOOPS by sony

Keyboard Magazine seems to have zero interest in hardware synths! What a totally frustrating watch!
If they'd had any hardware synths on stage that day, you'd have seen them.
@@gearyelton My bad, modules, mixer and the module with a keyboard. Orbital has interest, interviewer cum cameraman clearly doesn't by the quality of his shots, imo.

something not right here

oh sorry didnt know that haha, the dude in the green just looks so funny happy. good for them tho ;p
No worries! Yes, Phil Hartnoll is definitely the more relaxed of the two.
Orbital using multiple ipads. Very sad to see. Digital, no longer Orbital. 😔👎
