Tony Banks of Genesis said in an interview once that the keyboards (piano, organ, mellotron, ARP 2600, ARP Soloist, etc.) he used in the early to mid-1970s were the kind you used almost 100% of, but with modern synths you're lucky if you use as much as 5% of what they can do.
I like the fact that Paul never ages. :) Totally agree on the gear piling - have exactly the same problem and know exactly what he is talking about - ironically i'm in exactly the same process of hiding most of it into storage.
I can't help but having a tiny grin on my face when I see one of my old hero's is using the same mixer as me, and is raving about the Xpander, plus has an Andromeda as close as possible to where he's sitting... I'll never have his studio, and I have learned the hard way it's not about the gear but FAR MORE about putting in the hours, but yeah, I'm still kind of grinning because I feel exactly the same way about those pieces of gear, having spent countless many hours with them... Great video ! thx guys ! :)
Any kind of analog synthesis Paul has is virtually all he has displayed here. He may have some from "Soviet Union-designed" monophonic or polyphonic synth companies. No wonder Orbital sounds like no one else. They mosh Eastern and Western edm.
Actually it's a CZ1. I should know, I've just bought it! That very actual one, with the extra rotary encoder and the tape marks over the logo. It's in my house now. There were about 15 Orbital items for sale in the VEMIA auction last week, some of which can be seen in this video.
No. They started off WAY before DAWs were the norm. If you knew a single thing about them, you'd know that. Paul's actually deeply knowledgeable about synths and how to use them. See my first comment.
And two years on, STILL no coherent answer from "Minnow Poo". Seen them perform, and their synths break down, multiple times. So yeah, they do play live mate, unless my overactive imagination is conjouring up an entire parallel universe. How about you? Do you play live? No, thought not. :-D
"If you starve yourself of resources, you become more resourceful..."
Words to live by.

@@tostare perfectly stated, thanks Igor
Paul always have something interesting to tell
Big love for the Tempest there, a glowing endorsement. Such a great video of a great chap. Orbital are the gift that keeps giving.
What an extremely cool video. thanks for bringing it to us. Paul is such an intelligent guy, you can hear that in the music.
A fantastic amount of equipment. And you can see how much love he has for it all. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, he's a total synth nerd :-)
Clever lad is Paul.....and his brother. Their Brown album is just a stunning piece of craft!
Poo album
Because brauowne
Brown
Dudes, I just wanted to say that I love these Cribs videos!
That poor old TR909, arguably one of THE sounds of EDM from the last 30-40 years, ignored in the corner..

great content coming from Spitfire as always! also loving the complementary industry insights
so honest and so inspiring
creative cribs, great series, really enjoying it.
A pleasure seeing someone in their element.
Nice interview and walk round thanks.
Getting a VCS3 in tune '...is like herding cats' :-)
Poor little TR909 just sitting in that corner all alone..
Doesn't need it now he uses ableton? :)
Nice studio there. Proper acoustic treatment too.
Oberheim Xpanders not that expensive? Id like to know where he buys his gear! Current market price is $3,500- 4,500
Compared with the other vintage Oberheim's, it's cheap (!).
Real shame the audio on this recording was so low, amazing collection and interesting stuff!
Strange that isnt it, considering he runs an audio company.. you woulda thought they wouldve mic'd them up.. smh
I'm a simple man.. I see Cribs, I press like
Wish the artists would play a lil bit from a few synths....enjoying creative cribs 👍🏽
Fantastic maschines !
Great gear. I think there is a SH2 there or similar?
He is so right, too much gear can clog the mind.
Would love to hear his thoughts on his Monomachine. I absolutely adore mine.
I hoped he will give away his opinion on the analog keys :)
yeh i cant believe there were several elektrons that never got mentioned
No mentioning of the analog keys which is center piece. Why?
I feel bad for that poor 909, sitting in corner :(
Fk me wow...
What a studio, no wonder Orbital create such deep textures within thier music...
In awe 😊
Choice paralysis on a BIG scale
Oh Christ! The Macbeth again! This is amazing.
I'd pay paul for a day in his studio!!!

Edm 🤣

@@bandfromtheband9445 He's not called Dr Stupid for nothing. ;-)
Orbital are top tier music makers.
TR-909, discarded in the corner of the room @ 14:08
in the naughty corner.
Probably a doner DM.
"...right in time for the softwarw version!" Hahahah!
this could have been an hour long vid and id still want it to be longer, great watching
Bonkers video!
Paul makes me feel better about my battles with GAS.
Can you guys do a creative cribs video on Alexandre Desplat? That would be sick.
If you know him we'll ask!!!
That would be bloody awesome!!!
There's a podcast called Songexploder and he's interviewed in one of the episodes. He talks about the creative process - it's good!
Yes I've heard that podcast! The one where he breaks down the main theme to "The Imitation Game" right? Very awesome stuff.
finally someone that uses ableton
Very sad 909 in the corner.
Yeah, i did feel a bit sorry for that 909 too.
Would you say this collection surpasses 50 grand?
Definitely.
did you catch the clocks? "8:58"
Alesis Andromeda! Yes!
could.. could it be that one of these instruments gave birth to Belfast? the only true 'masterpiece' on this earth!
Please start using microphones. I have it at full volume and I have no idea what they are saying.
I'm watching on a tablet at 1/3rd max volume and it's really clear and perfectly loud enough.
Paul has a MAJOR case of GAS !!
i've got 8 synth/drum machines and 3 synths , if i had room for more? god help me lol
The audio is super quiet
Not on my tablet. 1/3rd volume, sounds clear and loud.
Woo crazy Cool!
Hey paul mate if you feel like chucking some synths out again just give me a call
I'll take whatever you get rid of, Paul! ;)
does anybody know the name of the silver synth or module to the right of the Oberheim xpander? the top one not the bottom one
It looks like an Elektron Sidstation.
Not sure where he got his info from. Pretty sure there were more than 11 Sunsyns made.
He's probably in a better position than any of us here to know. Most of us have never heard of them.
Oberheim Xpander not that much expensive really ? What is he talking about. When was the last time he looked on ebay ?
Compared to other vintage Overheims, they're not. Still £3,000.
Probably the only person in history to pour a pint out of a sunsyn 🤦🏻😂
Lots of clocks ;)
"CLOCK TICKING"
Even a stopped clock gives the right time twice a day.
Cocks?
Cirklon!!!
The Casio is a cz5000 not a cz1000

Got myself a laptop.
'i'm not familiar with modular things...'
Monomachine keys!
My brother? Eh? Sure he must have a name?
sidststion!
@12:20 Am I the only one who saw the toilet paper on the desktop and was thinking like dirty thinkgs are going on here normally?
Contact switch cleaner needs LOTS of mopping up. Less viscous than water and filthy to get out of your clothes.
Warhing this is better than porn
So in the end, these guys are basically computer geeks with a great sense of melody.
No. They started off WAY before DAWs were the norm. If you knew a single thing about them, you'd know that.

Lots of knobs and sliders are fun but if you have talent you can do it all in the box.
nah
If you have real talent you do it with the knobs and sliders. You are backwards dude.
'Knobs and sliders' require talent to operate competently.
But what's the fun in that? Anti creative.
dont talk, make music please!
Orbital dont play LIVE!
Gosh. Must have been clones I saw then?
And two years on, STILL no coherent answer from "Minnow Poo".

@@2112jonr and 2 yrs on they still dont play one single synth live ..they don't even play the tb303 live...lol
